3rd place Animals, Dustin Huntington White Lines Sphinx Moth Hummingbird Moth (White-Lined Sphinx Moth) This photo was taken in my front yard in Tijeras, NM. I have a “pollinator garden” planted with various flowers selected to attract bees, wasps, butterflies, moths and other pollinators. It provides an endless source of subjects for macro photography. The pink flower is Rocky Mountain Bee Plant, which is especially good. The White-Lined Sphinx Moth is often called a “Hu…mmingbird Moth” since their rapid, hovering flight and general size resembles a hummingbird. They are common throughout NM in the summer and feed in both day and night. When feeding, they are often easy to approach for photography, but their rapid flight can make them a tricky subject. The caterpillars eat primarily desert scrub plants, and while they do some minor damage, their benefit as an excellent pollinator far outweighs this.
