AMY’S PICKS

Rooftop Cinema
7 p.m. Friday, July 14, Bellingham Parkade, 1300 Commercial St.
Last July, the Pickford Film Center drew attention to the late actor Patrick Swayze by screening three of his movies on the roof of Bellingham’s biggest parking garage. They dubbed it “Summer of Swayze,” and it was a big success.

This year, “Hot Girl Summer” will be the theme of the trio of movies. But don’t go thinking you’ll be showing up to watch scantily-clad women showing off more skin than brains. Instead, Pickford Marketing Manager Gray Gordon said they’ll be featuring three complex women in the lead roles of their respective films — an idea I can strongly get behind.

Reese Witherspoon kicks off the feisty fun tonight with “Legally Blonde”; Frances McDormand continues the series July 28 with a screening of “Fargo”; and Charlize Theron commands the screen Aug. 11 with “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Show up early for food, fun and games, then settle in at dusk for the free screening, which happens to take place in a surprisingly scenic locale.

“It’s the best 360-degree view of Bellingham Bay’s sunset between the mountain and the sea,” Gordon said. “People are driving up to watch sunsets at the Parkade all the time.” Info: pickfordfilmcenter.org. (Note: Please check in advance to make sure the July 14 event is still happening. At press time, it was unclear if the elevator at the Parkade would be in working order.)

The Northwest Raspberry Festival
July 14–15, throughout Lynden
I sampled the first red raspberries of the season from our backyard patch recently, and I’m here to tell you the taste of the fresh fruit is something that can’t be replicated. Sweet but not cloying, the flavor is unmatched and the berries are delicious in everything from pies to cocktails, smoothies, on top of ice cream or cereal, or simply shoveled straight into your mouth.

If you don’t grow your own, no problem. Simply head to Lynden this weekend to attend the festival celebrating Whatcom County’s longstanding raspberry industry. Live music on two stages, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, a kids zone, a car show, a street market, and a scavenger hunt will be part of this annual event, but if you’re in it for the food and drink, they’ve got you covered.

Among fruit-focused flavors you’ll find are raspberries and ice cream for a mere $2; raspberry wine and spirits tastings (two tastes for $1); a Razz “Beery” Time-out Garden featuring raspberry beer, specialty cocktails and more; a barbecue salmon dinner; and on Saturday morning, a raspberry pancake breakfast at the Lynden Community Center. Community celebrations have never tasted so good. Info: lynden.org

Vancouver Folk Music Festival
July 14–16, Jericho Beach Park, Vancouver, British Columbia

photo  In January, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival was in danger of shutting down. Thanks to community support, the longtime festival featuring music from around the globe will continue July 14–16 at Jericho Beach Park. (Photo courtesy of Vancouver Folk Music Festival)

In late January, I received an email from Gwen Kallio of Sisu Productions with the subject line “A call to save the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.” The abrupt decision to dissolve the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society would have put an end to 45 years of music-making at the lovely locale located just an hour or so away from Bellingham.

Luckily, public outcry from supporters, partners and other festivals changed minds, and the three-day event is now going on as planned. You can help ensure its continuation by procuring tickets and making your way over the border to attend the music festival known for redefining the meaning of “folk.” With 40-plus acts with roots in more than 12 countries, 10 states and eight provinces, the inspired lineup will feature tunes for every ear.

On-site food, beverages, and arts and crafts will also be part of the 46th annual festival, as will workshops, a Little Folks Village and much more. While there, it wouldn’t hurt to take a moment to tell organizers you appreciate their hard work. After all, without support, they wouldn’t have been able to continue doing what they do. Whatcom Grooves
2 p.m. Saturday, July 15, Glenhaven Lakes Clubhouse, 2997 Glenhaven Drive

photo  Bilongo, a seven-piece Latin jazz group featuring vocalist Sabrina Gomez, kicks off Whatcom County Library System’s Whatcom Grooves Saturday, July 15, at Glenhaven Lakes Clubhouse. The new summer jazz series showcases talented local jazz musicians and celebrates libraries. (Photo courtesy of Whatcom County Library Systems)

In 2010, jazz aficionado K.C. Sulkin debuted the Sudden Valley Jazz Series as a way to support the South Whatcom Library. Along with the Friends of South Whatcom Library, volunteers from other libraries got on board to bring jazz music to residents throughout Whatcom County.

Whatcom Grooves, a new summer jazz series organized by the Whatcom County Library System, is also aimed at showcasing talented local jazz musicians and celebrating libraries, hearkening back to Sulkin’s original idea to share the joy of music.

Saturday’s concert kicks off the trio of shows with Bilongo, a seven-piece Latin jazz group featuring vocalist Sabrina Gomez. At 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, The Jerry Steinhilber Trio will be at the Ferndale Library for the second show. The Jazz Explosion will have its turn in the spotlight at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Blaine Performing Arts Center.

The free concerts will be complemented by a couple of youth-centered events, Junior Groove: Jazz for Kids. The sessions happen Friday, Aug. 4, at the Ferndale Library and Friday, Aug. 18, at the Blaine Library. Steinhilber will lead youth in grades K–5 in interactive programs to learn about jazz and to try their hand at making some music of their own. Info: wcls.org/jazz

NW Art Beat Studio Tour
July 15-16, throughout Skagit County

photo  Mary Quintrall is one of the many artists taking part in the NW Art Beat Studio Tour happening July 15-16 throughout Skagit County. The free, self-guided tour is put on by Skagit Artists — an organization with a mission to promote the visual arts in the area. (Photo courtesy of Mary Quintrall)

I’m always looking for excuses to spend time in Skagit County, and this 19th annual event helmed by Skagit Artists — an organization with a mission to promote the visual arts in the area — provides multiple reasons.

First off, the free, self-guided tour focuses its lens on active art studios featuring juried artists from Skagit, Island, San Juan, Snohomish and Whatcom counties. Art must be shown in a working studio in Skagit County, so visitors are likely to encounter many shared spaces during the two-day event. This gives them an opportunity to discover an artist they may not have been aware of, and opens the door to further creative discussion.

Another plus about this particular tour is that it gives people an excuse to wander a bit. The 14 studios are located everywhere from Anacortes to La Conner, Mount Vernon, Clear Lake, Conway and Sedro-Woolley, as well as points in between. My advice? Find three or four studios of interest to visit, but don’t try to see everything in one day. Spend enough time to talk to the participating artists and get a behind-the-scenes look at what they’re up to and, if you like what they’re doing, consider purchasing one of their works. What’s in a Mobile Photography Studio?

What’s in a Mobile Photography Studio?

Photographers and filmmakers who work on location a lot have to strike a tricky balance between having all the gear necessary to complete a job and handle anything unexpected that might come up while still being able to travel without a ton of hassle. If you are wondering what it takes, check out this neat video that takes a look into a traveling photographer and filmmaker’s bag.

Coming to you from Jason Vong, this interesting video takes a look at his mobile studio setup, including cameras, gimbals, mics, lenses, drones, bags, lights, and more. Certainly, we are lucky to live in a time in which gear is smaller and more portable than ever, but on the other hand, you still have to think about what you throw in the bag, particularly if you are flying. Nonetheless, you can accomplish quite a bit with even an especially small and portable kit, and it can also be a nice creative challenge that really encourages you to focus less on the gear you are using and more on things like storytelling, your subjects, and more, which can help you to clarify and strengthen your creative voice. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Vong.

St. Louis Art Exhibit Counterpublic Closes This Weekend

St. Louis Art Exhibit Counterpublic Closes This Weekend

With articles celebrating its arrival in the New York Times, Forbes and other national outlets, Counterpublic definitely brought St. Louis’ art scene to new heights of awareness.

The triannual public art installation opened April 15 and closes this weekend on Saturday, July 15. This year’s iteration focused on a stretch of Jefferson Avenue running from Sugarloaf Mound at Ohio Avenue to the Griot Museum of Black History, where Jefferson crosses St. Louis Avenue.

It included 30 commissioned art installations and four permanent sculptures.

“The theme [is] about looking out to the past for a lens of repair,” James McAnally, executive and artistic director and part of the curatorial team, told the RFT in April. He explained that the art was created in spaces with histories that illustrate native displacement, Black displacement, inequality and segregation.

“[By] inviting in artists to work in the spaces, we wanted to not just focus on the past but also what could be done in the present to repair what has happened here,” he added.

The closing weekend of Counterpublic also includes a program that celebrates and further explores the exhibition’s intention and impact. Events include:

A guide to finding your photography style: Part five

A guide to finding your photography style: Part five

As photographers and creatives, we often find inspiration in the work of other talented artists. Analyzing and deconstructing the work of our favorite photographers can be an enlightening and educational experience. By studying their techniques, compositions, use of light, and storytelling approaches, we gain valuable insights that can inform and elevate our own photography. And they don’t have to be famous photographers to inspire us either. Let’s explore the benefits of analyzing and deconstructing the work of our favorite photographers to our own photography style.

Choose your favorite photographers

Start by identifying a few photographers whose work resonates with you. These can be renowned professionals, emerging talents, or even photographers within your local community. Start with a genre you really enjoy and then spread your wings and select photographers from different genres and photography styles. This can help you to gain a diverse range of insights and perspectives. Study their portfolios, follow their social media accounts and immerse yourself in their body of work.

Study their composition techniques

Composition plays a vital role in creating visually engaging photographs. Analyze how your favorite photographers use composition to draw the viewer’s eye, create balance, and convey their intended message. Look for patterns in their compositions, such as the Rule of Thirds, leading lines, symmetry or framing. Consider how their choices of perspective and framing contribute to the overall impact of the image.

Analyze their use of light

Light is a fundamental element in photography, and skilled photographers know how to utilize it to their advantage. Pay close attention to how your favorite photographers manipulate light in their images. Observe how they use natural light, artificial light, or a combination of both. Study their approach to lighting patterns, shadows, highlights and the overall mood created by their lighting choices.

Understanding their lighting techniques can inspire you to experiment with new ways of capturing and manipulating light in your own work. Do they always use the same lighting or do they play and experiment?

Uncover their storytelling techniques

Photography has the power to tell stories and evoke emotions. Analyze how your favorite photographers craft narratives within their images. Look for elements that convey a sense of narrative, such as the inclusion of human subjects, visual clues or juxtapositions.

Consider the emotions evoked by their images and how they achieve that through the subject matter, composition, or post-processing. By unraveling their storytelling techniques, you can enhance the narrative quality of your own photography.

Study their technical choices

Beyond composition and storytelling, pay attention to the technical aspects of your favorite photographers’ work. Analyze their use of camera settings, lens choices, depth of field and focus. Notice how they handle challenging lighting conditions or achieve a specific mood through post-processing techniques.

Understanding their technical decisions can help you make informed choices in your own photography and elevate your technical proficiency. Reaching out to photographers within your own social circles can be a great benefit.

Experiment with their style

While it is essential to find your own unique style, experimenting with the styles of others can be a valuable learning experience. Try to recreate some of their signature shots or techniques to understand the technical and artistic aspects involved.

Through experimentation, you can gain a deeper understanding of their approach and incorporate elements of their style into your own work. This exploration will ultimately contribute to the development of your personal photographic style.

Reflect on your own work

As you analyze and deconstruct the work of your favorite photographers, take the opportunity to reflect on your own photography. Compare your images to theirs and identify areas for improvement or growth. Consider incorporating the techniques and approaches you’ve learned from studying their work.

Remember, this process is not about copying their style, but instead using their expertise as a source of inspiration and knowledge to enhance your own creative journey.

Look for constructive critique

While this can often be quite difficult for many, asking for construction critique from trusted peers can help you to improve. Likewise entering juried competitions and getting feedback, while sometimes hard to accept, can also help improve your own unique style.

Final thoughts

Analyzing and deconstructing the work of your favorite photographers is a valuable exercise that can significantly contribute to your growth as a photographer. By studying their composition techniques, analyzing their use of light, uncovering their storytelling methods, and understanding their technical choices, you gain insights and inspiration that can elevate your own photography.

Remember to experiment with their style while staying true to your unique vision. Use this exploration as an opportunity to reflect on your work and continue evolving as an artist.

Happy exploring and creating!

While Bryan Adams is best known for his music, he’s also a skilled photographer — and now fans are getting a chance to see his latest work. The rocker will be the subject of a new exhibit, Bryan Adams in Colour, making its world premiere at the Atlas Gallery in Chicago on June 27 and running until August 12.

According to the announcement, the exhibit was inspired by the phrase “seeing things through rose-tinted glasses.” It has him experimenting with multicolored plexiglass to share a new point of view of his catalog of portraits, including those of stars like Mick Jagger and Amy Winehouse.

The gallery notes it “adds even more to the sense of the celebrity appearing to be viewed as if behind a screen, at a distance from the viewer, but somehow also themselves trapped.”

More information on the exhibit can be found at atlasgallery.com.

As for his day job, Adams is currently on his So Happy It Hurts tour, with opener Joan Jett. The trek hits Phoenix, Arizona, on July 25. A complete list of dates can be found at bryanadams.com.

New McEachern Art Center director found passion for art in Macon

New McEachern Art Center director found passion for art in Macon

Johnny Cohen has been named the second director of Mercer University‘s McEachern Art Center (The MAC). A Macon native, Cohen earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and received his Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Savannah College of Art and Design. His work reflects on consumer and shopping culture using colorful 3D displays. The Den recently sat down with Cohen to discuss his artistic philosophy, his plans for the MAC and his favorite parts of the local landscape.

How did you come to your career as an artist and curator?

From a very young age, I always knew that I had to do something creative, whether it be aspirations of becoming the next Andy Warhol or being cast one day as a tap dancer on Broadway. As a Maconite, I was heavily involved in the art community as both a fine artist and performer in local theater organizations. After graduating from the University of Georgia in 2018 with a degree in advertising, I landed a job as a visual display artist dressing windows and merchandising product on the retail sales floor. I was transforming a space to tell a story, whether it be a particular season or highlighting a specific store product. This experience laid the foundation toward my passion for installation and spatial design. I started to understand the impact of how a well-designed space can truly move people. During my MFA studies, I installed and curated my first gallery show with my body of work.

My work revolves around the feeling of nostalgia, pulling elements of colors and shapes into a space where people can reflect on their own feelings from the past. I knew that exhibitions aren’t mere works sitting on a white wall highlighting an artist’s technique and process. Instead, curation is an act of transformation. It’s about narrating the story of an artist through an immersive, visually powerful environment.

What types of artists inspire you? Do you have any mentors who have shaped your point of view?

My biggest inspirations are artists who explore themes of our consumerism and question the meaning of art in their work. I love how Andy Warhol takes images of our culture such as the Campbell’s soup can and identifies these icons as fine art through his own method of silk screen printing.

I also appreciate Marcel Duchamp and Jessica Stockholder, who take objects of everyday life as their primary materials. A bike wheel and a plastic laundry basket have just as much potential to be a piece of fine art as a famous painting on display at the Met. My biggest mentor to this day is Krista Grecco, an Atlanta-based sculptor, former professor and colleague. She taught me how to brand myself, connect with creatives and find a place in an art community.

What brought you to Mercer? As a sculptor, do you have a favorite feature on campus or in the Macon area yet?

After working as a foundations professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, I had the urge to invest more time in curation. I saw this new opportunity at Mercer as a place for me to continue growing as an art educator. Since I was a kid, I have always loved the vast amounts of public art in downtown Macon and enjoyed going through the exhibitions at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. To this day, my favorite sculpture is the “Gesturing Woman” sculpture by Viola Frey in the permanent collection at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. The colors and cartoon-like qualities bring back those memories of me loving art as a kid in Macon.

You grew up in Macon. What makes you want to return now?

Macon is where my roots are. If not for Macon, I would have never discovered my passion for art and experienced all the moments that made me the person who I am today. Macon is evolving, and I want to be a part of that growth that the city is currently experiencing. The community is like a family to me, and I want to be give back to all the wonderful things this community has given to me the last 27 years.

Are there any exhibitions coming up this year that you’re excited to tell our audience about?

I am excited to share some wonderful exhibitions coming to the MAC for the 2023-2024 calendar. We will be hosting a SCAD grad, Gretchen Wagner, in the fall. She is a screen printer that heavily focuses on color relationships. We will also host two Muscogee artists during the Fire Starter Festival in September as the Ocmulgee Mounds are in the works of becoming Georgia’s first national park. In the spring of 2024, we are excited to launch our very first Fluxus exhibit and festival, including works by renowned artist John Cage.

What parts of the contemporary art scene most interest you right now?

I am interested in nontraditional forms of art, including new forms of media since the pandemic. I am interested in following these trends as we continue to evolve in the arts. I also value collaboration. Artists are continuing to work together to promote social causes and gain a voice in the community.

What’s a fun fact about your interests outside of work?

Finn and Fitz. Photo courtesy Johnny Cohen

Outside of work, I am continuing to cultivate my own practice as an artist. I have ventured into making graphic collages and have dipped my toes into furniture making. I also enjoy spending time with my two furry pals, Finn and Fitz. Finn is my minature goldendoodle and Fitz is my cat. They are truly the ones who get me going the moment I wake up in the morning, and I am excited to have Finn as the new studio pup at the MAC.
