Snap of dedicated nurse amongst winners of NHS photography competition

An image of a nurse with nearly 50 years of experience has been announced as one of the winners of a national photography competition for NHS staff and volunteers.

The best photographs have been chosen from five categories in the contest held to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS.

The winners and runners-up will be exhibited at the Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden, London, from July 5.

The photograph of Mother Obe, a nurse at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital – who has 47 years’ experience, was taken by Nurse Emmanuel Espiritu and won the Our People category.

NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard said: “This competition has provided the perfect opportunity for our incredible staff and volunteers to give a snapshot of life in the NHS, 75 years on from its inception – and we were amazed by the hundreds of brilliant, thought-provoking, and inspiring entries from NHS colleagues across the country.

“I want to offer my personal congratulations to the winners and everyone that took part – as we mark 75 years of the health service, your images will provide fantastic insight into life in our remarkable NHS throughout the exhibition and I cannot wait to see them in person.”

The other winners include the photograph by senior pharmacist Wasim Baqir, of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which claimed the Our Innovations category with its depiction of hundreds of used vaccine vials in an orange sharps bin illustrating the Covid-19 vaccination programme.

The photograph by paramedic Joe Cartwright, of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, shows an ambulance battling snowy conditions as the Beast from the East hit the UK and it won the Our Environment category.

And the shot by senior research nurse Ewa Gasior, of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, won the Our Care category with the depiction of many hands contributing to delivering patient care.

The winner of the Our Partners category, by Jenny Brodie and Mary McConnell – of Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Free Charity, captures the moment Flo, a freelance hairdresser funded by the Royal Free Charity, provides one of her weekly cut and wash services to a grateful patient.

Tom Watanabe, managing director for Fujifilm UK, said: “We know from working with NHS colleagues up and down the country the passion they have for the health service, even in the most challenging of times, so we were delighted to help shine a spotlight on some of these fantastic stories.

“The exhibition will offer the public a unique opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes in our health service every day and it is a fitting way to mark 75 years of the NHS.”

The Powerful Benefits of Photography for Mental and Physical Health |

The Powerful Benefits of Photography for Mental and Physical Health |

Photography is not just about capturing beautiful images; it is a powerful tool that can positively impact our mental and physical well-being. Whether you are an amateur or a seasoned photographer, picking up a camera and immersing yourself in the art of photography can bring numerous advantages to your overall health. In this post, let’s explore the remarkable benefits that photography offers for both mental and physical well-being.

Enhancing Mindfulness

Engaging in photography allows us to focus our attention on the present moment. When we immerse ourselves in the process of framing a shot, adjusting settings, and capturing the perfect image, we enter a state of mindfulness. This mindfulness helps to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression, promoting a sense of calm and clarity. With so many distractions happening around us every day, it is great to have this release to switch off the noise and tune in to the sounds of nature around us.

Boosting Creativity

Photography is an artistic outlet that encourages us to think outside the box, explore new perspectives, and express our unique vision. Engaging in creative activities such as composing shots, experimenting with lighting, and post-processing stimulates our imagination and enhances problem-solving skills. This creative boost can have a positive impact on our mental well-being, fostering a sense of fulfillment and self-expression. Who know, perhaps you will surprise yourself at the levels of creativity that have been locked away until now?

Encouraging Self-Expression

Photography provides a platform for self-expression and storytelling. Through the images we capture, we can convey emotions, experiences, and perspectives, allowing us to communicate and connect with others on a deeper level. This outlet for self-expression can be particularly beneficial for individuals who find it challenging to express themselves verbally. Art has long been a tool for expression and photography can also be such a tool, not only for us to use but also for the viewer to be transported away from the everyday hustle and bustle into a land and feeling that you have created for them to enjoy also.

Photography encourages us to be more attentive to our surroundings. When we venture out with a camera in hand, we become more attuned to the details, textures, colors, and beauty of the world around us. This mindful observation not only enhances our appreciation for the present moment, but also helps to cultivate a sense of gratitude and wonder. The sounds of the waves, birds, or leaves swaying in the wind are always there. It’s just we may not have been tuned into them before now. Additionally, the feeling of the wind can energize you like you haven’t been before.

Stimulating Physical Activity

Photography often takes us to beautiful outdoor locations and encourages exploration. Whether we are hiking through forests, strolling along the beach, or climbing hills to capture the perfect shot, photography can inspire physical activity and increase our overall fitness levels. Engaging in regular physical activity has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, increased energy levels, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Plus, the views out here are far better than the views any gym can offer.

Fostering Connection and Community

Photography has the power to bring people together. Joining photography clubs, attending workshops, or participating in online communities allows us to connect with like-minded individuals who share our passion for capturing moments. These connections foster a sense of belonging, provide opportunities for learning and collaboration and can alleviate feelings of loneliness or isolation. Many friendships have been created through the common love of the outdoor and photography, so perhaps your next lasting friendship is just one adventure away.

In Summary

Photography offers a multitude of benefits for both mental and physical health. From enhancing mindfulness and boosting creativity to promoting physical activity and fostering connections, the art of photography has the power to positively transform our well-being. So, grab your camera, explore the world through a different lens, and unlock the remarkable advantages that photography has to offer. Embrace the joy, inspiration, and healing that can be found behind the lens.

Remember, photography is not just about the images we capture; it is a journey of self-discovery, growth, and well-being.

The City of Sparks Parks and Recreation Department has been awarded an $18,750 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The grant money will support the commission and installation of a public piece of artwork on Victorian Avenue.

“This project will create a gathering space around a piece of art in the Sparks community, as well as articulate the cultural identity of our city,” said Raquel Monserrat, City of Sparks Special Events Supervisor.

The City of Sparks’ project is among 1,130 projects across the country, totaling more than $31 million, that were selected during this second round of Grants for Arts Projects fiscal year 2023 funding.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is pleased to support a wide range of projects, including the City of Sparks’ commission of a public art piece to be installed in the Victorian Square Cultural District, demonstrating the many ways the arts enrich our lives and contribute to healthy and thriving communities,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, Ph.D. “These organizations play an important role in advancing the creative vitality of our nation and helping to ensure that all people can benefit from arts, culture, and design.”

The City is partnering with its Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board (EIAB), The Generator, and 39 North Downtown, to guide the public input portion of this project.

The EIAB will help with the project’s marketing efforts, make connections with arts organizations serving minorities, and make recommendations on how to elicit feedback from the target audiences.

The Generator will serve as the chief art consultant in areas of the engagement events, ensuring that artists and art are central. They will also be key advisors on the technical portions of selecting, building, and installing the artwork, and assisting the selected artist to see that the project is successful.

39 North Downtown is a downtown merchant association that will support the Generator’s activities with marketing and volunteer support. Representatives from partnerships will serve on the selection committee alongside members of the Arts and Culture Advisory Committee.

“We will host five community engagement programs to solicit input for the project. These arts-based engagements will target diverse communities that represent Sparks,” Monserrat said. “We are also encouraging the community to take our arts and culture engagement survey.”

A call for artists will be distributed widely to identify artists to present design concepts to the committee and community. Up to three artists or artist teams chosen will present concepts based on the wide-reaching information in the arts plan and a tour of downtown with residents and business owners.

The final design will be chosen from three artists’ designs through a public meeting to allow input.
