Sony’s photography-focused Xperia 5 III with dedicated shutter button now $598 (Save $400)

Sony’s photography-focused Xperia 5 III with dedicated shutter button now $598 (Save $400)

Sony makes some of the more unique smartphones on the market, and now we’re seeing the best price yet on one of them. Amazon is now offering the unlocked Sony Xperia 5 III 5G 128GB for lower than ever before, dropping the handset to $598 shipped. Typically fetching $998, today’s offer lands at $400 off while beating our previous mention by an extra $100. It’s only the second offer of the year and now lands at a new all-time low. As one of the more recent additions to Sony’s stable of photography-focused smartphones, its Xperia 5 III comes centered around a Snapdragon 888 chip that powers the 6.1-inch 21:9 120Hz display. Its photography features are really what let this one stand out from the competition, and we explore that below the fold.

The real enticing features for the Xperia 5 III arrive for those who plan on using this as a camera first and foremost, with a unique feature set on that photography front. There is a triple sensor camera array around back that sports ZEISS optics, dual PDAF sensors for fast autofocus, and AS super resolution zoom to help capture far away subjects. Not to mention, 120FPS recording and plenty of customizable settings to complement the dedicated shutter button. All of the details are also available in , too.

With that all-time low attached, using some of the added savings to bring home the Spigen Rugged Armor Case seems like a good call to protect all of that photography process. The cover sells for just $14 at Amazon and helps keep your new handset protected with a flexible TPU design.

Of course, the spotlight this week is still resting on the new debuts from Samsung. And we wouldn’t be 9to5Toys if we didn’t have some enticing offers to share. Just announced in the middle of last week, you can now save as much as $400 on unlocked Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 devices. Combining cash discounts on elevated storage capacities with bundled gift cards, these pre-order sales offer a chance to land one of the all-new foldables for less. And best of all? There’s no trade-ins required.

Sony Xperia 5 III features:

For those serious about creating and enjoying mobile content, the frosted glass and blasted metal frame of the Sony XPERIA 5 III Dual-SIM 128GB 5G Smartphone is packed with technology for photographers, cinephiles, and gamers alike. Taking cues from their Sony Alpha cameras, the triple rear 12MP lenses and ZEISS optics give you a wide range of imaging capabilities.

Tri-County Arts Council to host fine art, craft market in Ellicottville

Tri-County Arts Council to host fine art, craft market in Ellicottville

OLEAN, N.Y. — The Tri-County Arts Council recently introduced and would like to welcome the community to the inaugural Ellicottville Fine Art and Craft Market in Ellicottville, on the lawn of the 1887 Building on U.S. Route 219 in the center of town, on Sept. 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., both days.

This event is a partnership between the Tri-County Arts Council, Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Ellicottville.

This juried show features the work of some of the region’s best-known artists and fine craftspeople, many of whom also have international reputations in galleries and fine art shows throughout the United States and abroad. An intimate evening of fine arts and crafts, Ellicottville Fine Art and Craft Market, is an opportunity to add to or begin an art collection, purchase a one-of-a-kind gift, and meet the artists and makers behind an impressive collection of works.

Indeed, the Tri-County Arts Council is comprised of member artists and craftspeople who reside in Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.

Many of those members will be part of the Ellicottville Fine Art and Craft Market, including fine artist Sean Huntington, TCAC Exhibitions Coordinator.

“We want to expose the residents and visitors of Ellicottville to the amazing talent that this region has to offer,” said Huntington. “Plus, buying from local artists that you can actually meet and form a relationship with is so much more satisfying than getting some anonymous art from a big box store. Fill your home with pieces that mean something to you! “

Participating artists include Robin Zefers Clark, Lisa Conn, Denise Drummond, Pam Gifford, Ed Green, Bonnie Hedden, Lisa Hodge, Michelle Hoff, Sean Huntington, Keith McKale, Kaylee Taylor, Eileen Weishan, Mike Weishan, Mikel Wintermantel and many more. Their mediums include oil painting, gouache, watercolors, wood, sculpture, mosaic, glass, photography, pottery, sculptures, fiber, jewelry and so much more. There is so much talent in this region, and this is a great place to experience it.

The inaugural Ellicottville Fine Art and Craft Market promises to be a great event in Ellicottville. “We are hoping to make this an annual event,” said Bernstein. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to enjoy fine arts and crafts right in their own community, beyond the walls of a gallery.”

Sponsorship for the event is currently being sought. Please contact Tri County Arts Council for more information about becoming an event sponsor.

The market will be held rain or shine. The event is free with plenty of nearby parking, For more information, visit www.tricountyartscouncil.org/ellicottville-fine-arts

Art meets Bollywood at the races: Mumbai to get first major art fair this November

Art meets Bollywood at the races: Mumbai to get first major art fair this November

Mumbai, India’s financial capital and most populous city, is to get its first major art fair this November. Art Mumbai (16-19 November) will take place on the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, a historic horse racing track in the city’s centre, and feature around 50 exhibitors, mostly from India. These include some of its leading galleries, such as Experimenter (Kolkata, Mumbai), Vadehra Art Gallery (New Delhi) and Chatterjee & Lal (Mumbai); they will be joined by smaller outfits such as Sumukha from Bangalore. Five overseas galleries specialising in South Asian art—including Grosvenor in London and Aicon from New York—will also show at the fair.

The launch of Art Mumbai is significant for India, where for the past 15 years only one major fair has been held: the India Art Fair (IAF) in New Delhi. IAF’s last event, which ran from 9-12 February 2023, saw 71 galleries take part—its largest edition to date. IAF’s organisers said that the fair’s growth was evidence of the recent strength of India’s contemporary art market, which according to a report by Indian Art Investor, saw its strongest year ever in terms of turnover in 2022.

While the Mumbai fair is comparatively boutique in size, its organisers are treating the inaugural edition as a “test run”. Future years will likely include international galleries selling blue-chip art, such as Continua and Lisson, both of which expressed interest to take part, according to Art Mumbai’s co-founder, Dinesh Vazirani. He will organise the fair along with his wife, Minal Vazirani, and the dealers Conor Macklin, the director of Grosvenor Gallery, and Nakul Dev Chawla, the founder of the online gallery Global Art Hub.

The Vaziranis are familiar figures in the Indian art world, having co-founded SaffronArt, one of India’s leading auction houses, headquartered in Mumbai. Dinesh Vazirani, who is the auction house’s chief executive, dismisses concerns from The Art Newspaper that his dominant position within India’s secondary art market poses a conflict of interest with his new role as a fair organiser and owner.

“In India there has always been a strong blurring of lines between the primary and secondary markets,” he says. “Galleries have become auction houses, and auction houses partner with galleries to do a lot of primary work. Moreover, with the internet being a levelling platform, tech is increasingly blurring the lines between primary and secondary and various selling platforms the world over. I also think that it’s important to remember that India, unlike other countries, started with an online model for auctions, and went to IRL [in real life] later. The rules we play by are not all the same.”

Art Mumbai is a “totally separate company” to SaffronArt, he continues, and the auction house is not an official promoter, although Saffronart’s non-profit foundation—run by a different team to the auction house—will have a booth at the fair.

The fair will be directed by Teesta Bhandare, a curator and collector from New Delhi who has spearheaded young collector’s events across India. “Mumbai’s collector base includes a growing, younger professional class that buys art differently to their Delhi counterparts,” Bhandare says. “They are a bit more experimental and less into brand names; they also care less about what their parents are buying—there isn’t as strong a sense of legacy in their taste.”

Comparisons between India’s two largest commercial art hubs endure for Vazirani too, who says that Mumbai has felt “somewhat neglected” since IAF and prominent New Delhi-based collectors such as Kiran Nadar shifted focus towards the capital. But this was not always the case: Vazirani argues that Mumbai is the birthplace of modern-day arts patronage in India, having birthed the Bombay Progressives, an artist group founded in the 1947, whose members—such as VS Gaitonde and SH Raza—command some of the highest prices of Indian artists at auction today. They were supported early in their careers by the city’s rich industrialist families, such as the Tatas and the Goenkas. And this wealth has only grown: Mumbai has more billionaires than either Singapore or San Francisco.

Such wealth is no better exemplified than by the newly opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC), a cross-disciplinary arts venue in Mumbai funded by India’s second-richest family, the Ambanis. The centre is currently staging Maurizio Cattelan’s first solo exhibition in India, as well as the country’s first Mirror Room installation by Yayoi Kusama.

On a more micro scale, a number of new galleries showing emerging and mid-career artists have also opened in the city over the past two years, including XXL, Akara Contemporary and Apre Art House. This has been interpreted as a sign that Mumbai’s art scene has rebounded post-pandemic.

What Art Mumbai means in the long run for the New Delhi fair remains to be seen. Vazirani says that he approached IAF’s owner, the global fair company Angus Montgomery, to collaborate, but was told that they “were not ready”. Vazirani points out that, in comparison, Art Mumbai is “Indian owned” and will be “more personal” because its organisers know the galleries intimately.

It is no secret that IAF had been considering a Mumbai expansion for a number of years—a plan that never took off. A longstanding concern has been whether India possesses enough serious collectors to sustain more than one major art fair a year. While this may have been the case before, it is no longer, Vazirani believes, with the domestic market in rude health.

Beyond the promise of strong sales, Art Mumbai will also assert itself by tapping into what is perhaps the city’s best-known cultural export: Bollywood glamour. Vazirani says that he has been in touch with figures from Mumbai’s glittering film industry to stage a series of galas and parties that will make the fair “one to remember”.

Should we look? Lakehead prof helps shed light on atrocity photography

Should we look? Lakehead prof helps shed light on atrocity photography

Orillia-based scholar Valerie Hébert served as an author and editor for a new book called Framing the Holocaust: Photographs of a Mass Shooting in Latvia, 1941.

The Lakehead University professor is one of eight contributors to the book, which takes a deep dive into 12 photographs that document a mass shooting of Jewish people on a beach in Latvia in December 1941.

“When a lot of people think about the Holocaust, they think of Auschwitz and they think of trains,” Hébert said. “Before the death camps were built, the mass killings began with mobile shooting squads that combed through the Eastern Front as the Nazi army advanced.”

Hébert says the mobile shooting squads would gather alleged racial and political enemies and shoot them to death. More than a million people were killed using this terrorizing tactic.

“These 12 photographs show the sequential steps in one of these shooting actions,” she explained. “Jews were brought to this place, were made to undress. They were separated into smaller groups and brought to a ditch that was dug parallel with the sea, and they were shot. Their bodies fell into the ditch.”

Four men are connected to the photographs, but it’s unknown for sure who took them. The photos were turned in to the Soviet investigators by a Jewish Latvian man and are commonly used today in Holocaust museums but are rarely attributed to the correct time and place.

“This book provides an in-depth study and the historical context for these photos,” Hébert said.

In 2017, Hébert organized a workshop at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., on atrocity photography.

“Photographs are sort of at the cutting edge of Holocaust research in particular,” she said. “There is more and more interest in this field of atrocity photography.”

She invited scholars from Canada, the U.S., Germany and Australia to the two-week workshop to talk about their work in atrocity photography and to look at materials from the museum.

“The idea was to put together a book where we are all speaking about the same images,” she said. “We chose these 12 photos because it’s rare to have so many in a clear sequence.”

The images show partially clothed and naked women and children caught in moments of terror.

“They really push us to the edge of what it is we can bear to look at,” she said. “The key question of the book is if they are so unbearable to look at, why should we even engage with them? What can we gain from them? And what can they tell us?”

Each author in the book brings a different question to the photos.

For Hébert, studying photos goes back to her childhood. Her interest in history comes from looking through her grandfather’s Time Life coffee table book of photographs from the 20th century.

“From the time I was little, I would look at this book and would be really drawn to photographs,” she said.

Hébert, who has a PhD in history, uses photographs often in her teaching at Lakehead University.

“I’ve taught Holocaust courses, I’ve taught courses on the world wars, and at first I was always uneasy about showing photographs of dead bodies and people in distress,” she said.

“There are some really important questions around these people not giving their consent to be photographed. A lot of times, the photographs are a part of the torture and humiliation because the photographer is using the moment to deepen their suffering.”

Through the process of creating the book, Hébert asked herself if bringing light to the photographs continued the humiliation and horror of victims. She also asked herself if the pictures were important evidence that help people understand history.

“The chapter that I contributed to the book looks at that ethical question,” she said. “Should we look at these? Should we not? And what are the arguments on both sides?”

The chapter sets the stage for all of the following chapters in the book, and Hébert hopes readers who pick up the book will gain a new appreciation for how rich and complex photographs are.

“We have this idea that photographs tell us everything, the truth is on its surface, and we understand everything by looking at the photograph, but we don’t,” she said. “So, it’s really important to consider who took the photograph, who was the intended audience, and what that might mean.”

While the photographs in the book were taken as a celebration of the crime, they’re also an indictment, which makes it important to understand the many meanings photographs hold, Hébert says.

“It helps us think more critically about historical photographs that we see,” she said. “We are a more visual culture now with social media and Instagram. It’s all image based now.”

She says photographs can transcend language, time and geography, which makes it important to have a more critical and nuanced way of understanding pictures while being aware of their ethical complications, which makes people better consumers of present-day photojournalism.

“The ones in the book help us understand this particular event in the Holocaust,” she said. “The way that the authors model how we read and interpret these photographs, there is a lot of crossover to how you may engage in photographs of other historical events or present-day crises and human rights issues.”

Framing the Holocaust: Photographs of a Mass Shooting in Latvia, 1941 will be available for purchase on Amazon starting Aug. 22.

The Big Review: Gary Simmons: Public Enemy at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago ★★★★★

The Big Review: Gary Simmons: Public Enemy at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago ★★★★★

For more than 30 years, the US artist Gary Simmons has examined the histories of racism as reflected in multiple aspects of American culture, from cinema to sport, creating an arresting body of work that includes large-scale “erasure” paintings, sculptures and video. From the beginning, Simmons’s work has been in alignment with conceptualism and produced with impeccable skill. In the survey exhibition, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy, it is clear that Simmons’s work remains more than up to the task of exposing and challenging persistent injustice at a time when we need it most. While all that is necessary, so is delight—and we get that here too.

Simmons—a native New Yorker with West Indian roots who is now based in Los Angeles—attended the School of Visual Arts in New York. He graduated in 1988, then moved west to study at the California Institute of the Arts. As well as making sculptural objects, he also began developing his erasure paintings after coming across a stash of chalkboards that were being stored in his first studio in a decommissioned school. As a surface for learning, the chalkboard inspired a number of ideas and techniques that led Simmons to create the monumental and energetic wall paintings that he is perhaps best known for: covering large surfaces with blackboard paint before going through countless pairs of gloves to blur the image or text he had so carefully created. In the smaller, earlier works, Simmons borrowed imagery from racist cartoons and then attempted to erase the drawings, leaving behind ghostly traces and blurry remains. His signature technique remains fresh and the themes remain horribly relevant.

Missing bodies, empty spaces, invisibility … the work may seem simple, but the ideas are not

Public Enemy, borrowing its name from the American hip-hop group, presents examples of Simmons’s early work along with more recent drawings of cartoons. Of the large-scale pieces on display, two will be acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago for its permanent collection. One of these is Reflection of a Future Past (2006), a pigment and oil on panel showing a doubled image of the skeletal remains of a 1964 World’s Fair pavilion in New York set against a vibrant blue background. René Morales, who co-curated the show with Jadine Collingwood and Jack Schneider, conceived the show when he was working for the Pérez Art Museum Miami—where the show will travel to in December—and brought the plans with him when he joined the curatorial staff of the MCA Chicago in 2022.

Gary Simmons’s Let Me Introduce Myself (2020) The Vichie Collection

In the glass-walled atrium leading to the main galleries is Recapturing the Memories of the Black Ark (2014-ongoing), named after Lee “Scratch” Perry’s recording studio in Jamaica where the early dub reggae sound was born. The work is a movable wood stage backed by an assemblage of PA speakers that was first created in 2014 for the Prospect triennial in New Orleans from reclaimed materials and served as a set for live performances around the city. It will do the same in Chicago.

The exhibition contains early sculptural works such as Everlast Champion (1991), a series of gold-plated athletic shoes, and Lineup (1993), where an oversized police height chart is the backdrop for eight pairs of gold-plated trainers placed on the floor. The connection between sports shoes and Black culture cannot be understated. Missing bodies, empty spaces, invisibility—Simmons effectively layers themes in his practice. The work may seem simple, but the ideas are not.

In Six-X (2002, a replica of the 1989 original), half a dozen child-sized Klan outfits hang from a metal rack with their corresponding white dunce caps on a shelf above, while nearby, Klan Gate (1992), made from two big brick columns supporting arched metal gates and topped with Klan figures, flanks the opening into the next gallery as if it were an entrance to a Hogwarts-like school for racism. Simmons’s interest in pedagogy is addressed in other works such as Disinformation Supremacy Board (1989), which is comprised of five wooden school desks facing narrow slivers of white board with white chalk and no room to accommodate the words that we could never see anyway.

Interior view of Gary Simmons: Public Enemy showing Klan Gate (1992) Photo: Shelby Ragsdale; © MCA Chicago

At the midpoint of the show is a reading room where, at the time of my visit, four visitors were seated and deeply engrossed in books pulled from nearby shelves. Many of the publications were chosen by Simmons and feature topics that have informed his work, from the architecture in Alfred Hitchcock films to the classic 1896 science fiction novel The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells. An anthology on critical race theory, centred eye-level on a shelf, seemed a proudly defiant location given the current attacks from the far right in the US on education, libraries and the teaching of Black history.

Simmons’s examination of identity extends to the concept of “white trash”—a slur that disenfranchises poor white people—in two pieces on display. In Untitled (2001), a moonshine distiller, completely covered in white latex enamel, is placed near Here, Piggy Piggy (2001), two giant bobbleheads referencing the 1972 film Deliverance, where businessmen from Atlanta have a notorious encounter with “hillbillies”—another derogatory stereotype. With these pieces, the artist introduces a broader conversation about class.

My first encounter with Simmons’s work in 2001 was a powerful one. As the artist-in-residence for the Site Santa Fe museum, he created Ghost House, a series of erasure paintings in an abandoned house situated on a remote 25,000-acre ranch in the New Mexico grasslands. It was so quiet, there were traces of shooting stars in the sky and it felt holy. The experience of being in this quite opposite environment at the MCA Chicago is nonetheless similar. With the arc of the moral universe on such a seemingly long detour on its bend towards justice, how is that possible?

Maybe it is the hope that as this disquieting subject matter continues to be exposed to the sunlight, we will finally be willing to find a cure. In the introductory catalogue essay, Morales writes about how Simmons’s work addresses the need for continued resistance, adding that “it is only through this healing of our collective memory that we may yet find a way to use the power of the past not for the subjugation of the Other, but as the key to collective liberation”.

See this show. Then go home, put on Public Enemy’s 1989 song Fight the Power, and get energised.

A guide to finding your photography style: Part eight

A guide to finding your photography style: Part eight

Photography is an art form that thrives on creativity and self-expression. As photographers, seeking feedback and constructive critiques from peers, mentors or experts is an essential step toward refining our style and improving our craft. Constructive criticism not only helps us identify our strengths and weaknesses but also provides valuable insights that can inspire growth and evolution in our photography. Let’s look into the significance of seeking feedback and how critiques can be instrumental in refining your photographic style.

The power of constructive feedback

Constructive feedback is a powerful tool for personal and artistic growth. As photographers, we can become emotionally attached to our work, making it difficult to objectively evaluate our images. Seeking feedback from others allows us to view our work from different perspectives, gain new insights, and identify areas for improvement.

Constructive criticism focuses on providing thoughtful, specific, and actionable advice to help photographers refine their style and elevate their work. By embracing feedback with an open mind, we can overcome creative challenges and propel ourselves toward greater artistic heights. While this is often easier said than done, critique is NOT for everyone. And sadly, not all critiques are helpful.

Finding critique communities

One way to receive feedback is by becoming part of a critique community. These communities may exist online or in local photography clubs, where like-minded individuals come together to share their work and offer thoughtful critiques.

Joining critique communities allows you to engage with photographers of varying skill levels and experiences, providing a diverse range of perspectives on your images. Through active participation and reciprocity, you can contribute to the growth of others while also benefiting from their constructive critiques.

Engaging in portfolio reviews

Portfolio reviews are another invaluable opportunity to receive feedback from industry experts, renowned photographers or professionals in the field. Many photography festivals, workshops and events offer portfolio review sessions where you can present your work for review and discussion. But beware sometimes these reviews can be quite harsh. Often a bitter pill, but can lead to some creative breakthroughs.

Participating in portfolio reviews provides you with direct access to experienced photographers who can offer personalized insights on your style, technique and overall body of work. These reviews can be transformative, giving you clarity on your strengths and weaknesses and inspiring you to refine your photographic style.

Seeking mentorship

Mentorship is a powerful way to receive tailored feedback and guidance in developing your photographic style. Look for experienced photographers whose work and approach resonate with you. Reach out to them, seeking mentorship or mentorship programs that provide opportunities for personalized feedback and constructive advice.

Mentorship relationships can be profoundly beneficial, as they offer ongoing support and encouragement to help you navigate creative challenges and refine your unique style.

Embrace the art of feedback

When seeking feedback, remember that constructive criticism is an art in itself. Be open to receiving feedback, both positive and constructive, with a mindset of growth and improvement. Avoid taking criticism personally and instead, focus on learning from the perspectives of others.

As you receive feedback, ask clarifying questions to gain a deeper understanding of the critiques and suggestions provided. This active engagement will not only show your commitment to growth but also foster a productive dialogue that leads to substantial improvements in your work.

Incorporating feedback into your work

Once you receive feedback, take the time to analyze and implement the valuable suggestions into your photography. Embrace the aspects that align with your artistic vision and refine your style accordingly. Do a self-review of your work, taking the feedback into consideration. Was the critique valid? Is there something you missed or could improve?

Remember that refining your photographic style is an ongoing process. As you progress, seek further feedback to ensure you continue evolving as an artist and photographer.

Seeking feedback and embracing constructive critiques is an indispensable part of the creative journey for photographers. Critiques provide us with the opportunity to gain fresh insights, identify areas for growth and refine our photographic style. By becoming part of critique communities, engaging in portfolio reviews, seeking mentorship, and embracing feedback with an open mind, we open ourselves up to a wealth of knowledge and inspiration that can elevate our photography to new heights.

Remember that seeking feedback is not a sign of weakness but rather a testament to your dedication and commitment to growth as an artist. So, embrace the power of constructive criticism. Let it guide you toward an even more refined and authentic photographic style.

Likewise, if you are only photographing for your own enjoyment, seeking critique is not necessary. Even as a professional, not seeking peer critique is a valid choice too. There are often people out there with opinions that are NOT helpful. Learn to take the good with the bad.

Happy shooting and refining your style!
