When Walter Waygood started posting photographs on social media that he had taken in the 1980s the reaction was unprecedented.
The photographer who is viewed as one of Wales’ most renowned photographers has built a sizeable reputation for his documentary photography, revealing candid glimpses of the nation from yesteryear.
Back in the 1980s, Walter was working as an artist-in-residence at Pen-Y-Dre High School on the Gurnos Estate in Merthyr Tydfil.
It began a journey which would build up a wonderful archive of photographs of life on the Merthyr estate and further afield around the South Wales Valleys.
The pics he took form the basis of his Family of Merthyr collection – pictures taken around the valleys’ town in the ’80s and ’90s.

With the aim of documenting the changing face of society and culture in the area, his photographs are incredibly vivid and evocative of the time, opening windows to a Wales that was experiencing difficult times.
“Once I worked as as an artist-in-residence I then became a community artist around the South Wales Valleys using photography as an educational and social tool,” he said. “I was taking pics of the people I was working with as well as friends and family.”

As he continued, a natural archive of documentary photographs was being formed with an emphasis on youth culture.
“The beauty comes from the ordinary from the home environment, which I realised as a body of work was built up,” said the photographer. “I was working with a younger generation.
“I want to instil a pride in the area where I came from. Unless you worked down the mines, back then you moved away from where you were from.
“I wanted young people to realise ‘hang on, stay put, there’s a tremendous history in the area we’ve got. I wanted to show a pride and dignity in working class life.”

Back then Walter had an intimate knowledge of youth tribes forged by his own experience.
“How did I get pride and identity? Well I was a skinhead back then,” he recalled. “There was a sense of belonging. Being a skinhead I was into reggae music. None of us were into the racialist side of it. It was all to do with youth culture and fashion.
“Merthyr was a hybrid of youth cultures. There were rockabillies, there were punk rockers, there were skinheads together. It was an exciting period.
“I loved the area I came from and I wanted to show that.”
He added: “The irony is that ambitions of the project have been built up through social media. The work has been opened up to a wider audience through the internet.”

What is special about Walter’s work is that it has presented the photographer with a voyage of discovery of his own.
“Recent pictures that I’ve added to social media came as a result of a request to get together pictures in preparation for the anniversary of the Miners Strike this year,” he said. “I went through negatives and produced images for the first time since I pressed the shutter button of the camera 40 years ago.”
For the future, Walter has plenty to occupy him and the many collections of photographs that have formed the basis of several exhibitions that the photographer has staged over the years.
And there are more on the way…

The most famous goat in the history of Boston was named Skellig Mör. During the early 1900s, Skellig Mör’s name plastered headlines as an arduous legal battle for his custody ensued. The famed goat was born in Killorglin, a town in County Kerry, Ireland. Prior to being bought by Americans and taken overseas to Boston, Skellig Mör was dubbed king in the annual Puck Fair, one of Ireland’s oldest traditions in which a group of individuals trek up a mountain range, catch one of the horned mammals, and crown the chosen one ‘King Puck.’ A king and symbolic entity, Skellig Mör’s absence caused tensions to rise, taking matters of ownership to the courts.
Eventually, ruling decided that Skellig Mör would stay in U.S. custody, and he lived the rest of his days aboard a battleship called the USS Vermont. The goat’s unfortunate death came the same year he was given to the American sailing crew, sparking news coverage once more that revealed the goat’s body was ultimately stuffed and displayed in a Boston museum. In Duke Riley’s newest solo exhibition titled The Repatriation of King Skellig Mör, the artist explores this curious relationship between animals and nature, institutional power, and ownership.

Cultivating his ongoing fascination with history and folklore coupled with cultural impact and environmental destruction, Riley creates visual layers to tell a re-imagined story. Following suit with his previous work, the artist repurposes bottles and containers from mundane household products. By painting and carving into these materials, Riley completely transforms domestic supplies into seemingly archival relics bearing the undertones of both historical and contemporary narratives.
The Repatriation of King Skellig Mör features not only Riley’s lauded scrimshaw iterations and monumental mosaics pieced together from vibrant pieces of plastic trash, but also introduces new material ventures. The artist’s “ruby glass” sculptures evoke the early 1900s, when the material was widely sold at tourist stops in the form of souvenirs and keepsakes. Exhibition text states that Riley “uses nostalgia for this material to connect the dots” between societal and wartime moments in American history.
Visit the show at Praise Shadows Art Gallery through June 30, and find more work on Riley’s Instagram and website.

Speculation about the forthcoming iPhone 16 Pro has been swirling, suggesting a potential overhaul of the device’s camera housing. Leaks suggest that Apple may be considering enlarging the camera housing, hinting at the integration of larger sensors in the device. This development has sparked anticipation among tech enthusiasts and Apple aficionados, as a revamped camera system could significantly enhance the photography capabilities of the iPhone 16 Pro.
Screenshots shared by tipster MajinBu on May 28 depict what appears to be an iPhone 16 Pro case featuring noticeably larger camera cutouts, hinting at the possible inclusion of larger sensors in the upcoming device. This development suggests a potential enhancement to the device’s photography capabilities compared to its predecessor. Additionally, rumours suggest that Apple may increase the display sizes for its Pro models, with the iPhone 16 Pro expected to receive a 0.2-inch boost to 6.3 inches, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max may sport a massive 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display. Previous reports have also hinted at the possibility of the iPhone 16 Pro featuring a larger sensor with 5X optical zoom, akin to the Pro Max model.
As with any rumours, it’s essential to take these reports with a grain of salt until official information is released by Apple. However, if the speculation about a larger camera housing and bigger sensors holds true, the iPhone 16 Pro could represent a significant leap forward in smartphone photography and cement Apple’s position as a trailblazer in the industry.

MLB icon Alex Rodriguez and his girlfriend Jaclyn Cordeiro are hugely popular figures in the baseball world. The New York Yankees legend credits Cordeiro for many positive changes to his lifestyle, and the couple takes psychological and physical fitness very seriously.
Cordeiro is the founder of JACFIT 5am Club, and also models occasionally for photographers. This was the case on Thursday when she had a shoot with internationally published fitness photographer, Ryan Lomer Ouellette. Both Cordeiro and Lomer Photography took to IG to share clips from the shoot, which captured a brilliant sunset.

Alex Rodriguez has been dating Jaclyn Cordeiro since 2022, according to Page Six, and the former Yankee has been full of praise for the impact she has had on his health.
Back in October 2023, Alex Rodriguez appeared on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” and amid the myriad of topics discussed, recalled a conversation he had with Jaclyn Cordeiro:
“You gotta get yourself in better shape,” Rodriguez remembered Cordeiro telling him.
“I just changed my routine and what I do now, Jennifer, is I get up in the morning and I don’t look at my phone until noon. So from the time I wake up, I’m in the gym at eight, I work out for a couple of hours, come home, do a little sauna, a little steam, stretch, meditate, and then I’m on my desk every day from 12-6.”
Speaking to the New York Post in April, Alex Rodriguez went into more detail about Jaclyn Cordeiro helping him lose weight and her methodological, scientific approach:
“I think what’s unique about her is that she’s gone from nursing for over a decade and she’s now shifted post-Covid into health and wellness. So she comes at it from a very organic, very scientific point of view, and she’s helped me tremendously. I mean, like I said, I’ve lost over 30 pounds [with help from Cordeiro].”
With the two very much in the public eye, fans can expect to see more from the couple in due course.
