Glen Ullin High School senior Lizzie Bachler has been playing basketball “since Day One,” or fifth grade in other words. She fondly remembers shooting hoops in the driveway and loves playing with her team.
But basketball is not her favorite sport. That title goes to golf, which Bachler picked up as a freshman. She has golfed in the state tournament four years in a row and said the friendships she has built while golfing have been invaluable.
“Golf was really a sport I fell in love with,” Bachler said. “I do enjoy basketball, but I have to claim golf as my favorite. Being able to compete at four state competitions in my four years has been such an experience.”
The daughter of Lisa and Joey Bachler, of New Salem, is the Tribune’s first 2023-24 Teen of the Week, sponsored by MDU Resources Group, which includes MDU Construction Services Group Inc., Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. and WBI Energy Inc., along with Cascade Natural Gas Corp., Intermountain Gas Co. and Great Plains Natural Gas Co.

A Teen of the Year will be selected from the weekly winners in the spring and will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
Bachler is president of Student Council, FFA and Future Business Leaders of America. One of her proudest achievements is competing at the national FBLA leadership conference twice for UX design, an event focused on digital user experience design principles.
Bachler also is the head editor of the school’s yearbook, a perfect role since she takes almost all of the photos anyway. The photography business owner said she captures every school sporting event, extracurricular activities and even helps take students’ yearbook headshots.
Bachler started 17:20 Photography, which is named after her favorite Bible verse, as an eighth grader. She started out taking photos for family friends before her business took off. This year, she has taken senior photos for 15 students, which is her favorite thing to shoot.
“As a senior this year, it’s just so cool getting to take my friends’ senior pictures since this is one of the last big things in high school that they’re going to be doing,” she said. “I love letting them be able to show their personality and all their hobbies and incorporating them into pictures.”
Over the summer, Bachler completed an internship working in the Mandan Public Schools business office. She said this was a great learning experience as she is considering getting a degree in business or graphic design.
English teacher Lora Voegele said Bachler finds time to be an exceptional student in addition to being a club leader, athlete and business owner. Voegele described Bachler as the kind of student teachers never want to see graduate.
“Within the classroom, Liz is a diligent and conscientious student who does not do anything half-way,” Voegele wrote in a letter of recommendation. “She is always willing to help her peers with anything, and her fun-loving spirit makes her a joy to have in class.”
Bachler maintains a 3.8 GPA and has made the A honor roll every year. Though she hasn’t landed on a specific school, Bachler plans to stay in state for her first year of college.
