The Mangrove Photographer of the Year 2023 award has been conferred to Soham Bhattacharyya. ‘The Finest “Flower” of the Mangroves’ captures a heart-warming image of a young Royal Bengal tigress through the mangrove bushes of a fragile natural wonder. Young Mangrove Photographer of the Year 2023 has been awarded to 17-year-old Katanyou Wuttichaitanakorn. Titled ‘Eye Contact’, the image captures a baby Golden-spotted Mudskipper staring him down on the edge of a mangrove in Thailand. Mudskippers are an amphibious fish and can use their pectoral fins to “walk” on land. (Katanyou Wuttichaitanakorn/ @akatanyou)

Winner for the Mangroves and Conservation Stories category is Mohammad Rakibul Hasan for a photo essay showing the extreme conditions the people face in the ‘Blue Fig’ in the Bangladesh side of the Sundarbans. Winner from the Mangroves and People category is Kris Pannecoucke. Titled Séphora the Clam Diver’, the image captures an extraordinary way of life between river, sea and land in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Winner of the best photograph in Mangroves and Underwater category is Anita Kainrath for depicting ‘A Lemon’s Life’. She photographed this curious juvenile lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) swimming among the shallow mangroves in the Bahamas. “Lemon sharks spend their first 4-6 years in shallow waters where mangrove forests protect them from bigger predators. Winner from the Mangroves and Threats category is Emanuele Biggi for featuring ‘The Theatre of Plastic’. It features a striking and sad image of a hermit crab in Malaysia using a plastic plug instead of a shell for its home. The award for best photograph from the Mangroves and Wildlife category goes to Chien C. Lee for clicking a ‘Hiding in Plain Sight’. Lee captured the stunning photo of a Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus), disguising herself as a branch, and looking after her egg in the mangrove forest of Colombia’s Utría National Park.(Chien C.
