Smackover native Alec Gatewood is being featured at the South Arkansas Arts Center with his exhibit “Alec Gatewood’s Eye for Nature.”

Currently a student at Louisiana Tech University, Gatewood is pursuing a double major in civil engineering and environmental science.

Gatewood’s work is centered around his love of nature. From the age of ten, his artistry was kindled by a simple face paint set. This led him to transform rocks and leaves into captivating creations that he sold at campgrounds. Guided by the nurturing mentorship of Melinda Cameron Godsey, the way for a future as a versatile artist was paved and his artistic prowess flourished.

His art and academic pursuits seamlessly intertwine, reflecting his deep appreciation for nature’s delicate balance. Singing, playing chess, and an initial exploration of surrealism and abstract art further enrich his dynamic life. His exhibition is a sanctuary where nature comes to life on canvas, portraying the profound connection between art and the environment.

“My work is a heartfelt exploration of nature’s beauty and tranquility, translated onto canvas and through the lens,” said Gatewood.

The mixed media exhibit takes viewers on an emotional journey that celebrates the beauty of our world and the profound inspiration found in every leaf, branch, and horizon. Expect to encounter the captivating world of animals, serene scenes, and vibrant landscapes that evoke deep emotions, reminding us of our essential connection with the earth.

“Whether you’re drawn to the vivid strokes of my paintings or the intricate details in my photographs, each piece reflects my enduring reverence for the natural world. My art invites you to reflect, offering a profound connection between art and nature that celebrates the wonder of animals and the importance of their preservation,” Gatewood said.

Gatewood’s exhibit is scheduled to remain on display in SAAC’s Lobby Gallery through Dec. 7.
