Photographer Tyra Mitchell’s Intimate Exploration of Parenthood | Atmos

In her ongoing photo-documentary series, Raising Our Youth, Mitchell turns her lens on how families are navigating parenthood in a heavily gentrified Washington, D.C.

Raising Our Youth is an exploration of the young families who inhabit Washington, D.C.; a reflection of how they are navigating their heavily gentrified hometown along with the many obstacles of parenthood. But the series is also focused on highlighting the beauty that still resides in the former “Chocolate City.”

Through film photography, Raising Our Youth aims to encapsulate the stories of the city’s natives, capturing the many ways gentrification has affected our city’s rich culture, its implications, and its impact on generations to come. The hope is that the project will start a conversation surrounding what it’s like to be young and raising a family in your hometown that now feels foreign.
