KANSAS CITY. Mo (KRCG) — A professional photographer was among those tagging along with Kansas City Chiefs players, coaches, and their families during the Super Bowl parade and rally before chaos broke out.

Photographer Scott Schaefer was up close and personal with the players as they walked up and down the street during the parade.

Shaefer told KRCG he told his wife Shannon he was prepared for any trouble before he left Columbia for Kansas City.

“We were never in harm’s way, thankfully, where we were at,” said Schaefer. I was telling Shannon the night before, I did have a few of those thoughts just run through my mind, as when you are around any big crowd these days, unfortunately.”

“You always think about what you would do if I was in that situation. As a photojournalist, you ask yourself, do I keep photographing or do I get to safety?”

Schaefer said there was a time after the shooting when his wife was unsure of his safety.

“We were walking to the car and getting into the garage. For those five or 10 minutes, she was scared because she couldn’t get a response out of me to know that I was safe. It was the same thing for my buddy who was photographing with me.”

Schaefer said the faces of joy he captured with his camera soon turned to faces of fear after the gunshots.

“Everything that I captured during the day was joyous and happiness and celebration. We’ll keep those as good memories and keep praying for those that were hurt.”

Kansas City police said they released one of the three individuals that are being detained in connection to the shooting. Two juveniles reman in custody.

Police Chief Stacey Graves said that 22 people injured Wednesday. A mother of two was killed.
