The young Princess Elizabeth at the ATS

Royal Collection Trust

Some of the photos on display will include childhood images of the late Queen, then Princess Elizabeth. A portrait of her time in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) during World War II, shows her in full uniform, with a twinkle of youth and innocence in her eyes. One particularly eye-catching image shows the Queen and Prince Philip gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in 1958. As the mist gathers behind them, there is a look of love and companionship in Britain’s most famous royal couple. Also featured are several childhood photos of the future King Charles III, where the makings of a future monarch are in evidence. Below the photograph, visitors will be able to see handwritten annotations of how the images were intended to look.
