BELFAST — Growing up in Los Angeles, Chris Battaglia, a freelance photographer based out of Maine’s Midcoast, saw plenty of art. One such exhibit, this one of Walker Evans’ subway portraits, especially moved him.

“[The pictures] were so mundane,” Battaglia said. “His subjects didn’t know he was taking photos…. On the outside, they’re uninteresting, but these portraits were so evocative because you’re capturing people at their most vulnerable. It feels like they capture this essence of the human condition that I am both horrified by and seek out when I try to take a portrait.”
