BYRON — Late Friday night the advance waves of a monster solar storm crashed into the Earth’s atmosphere.

The event was categorized by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as an “extreme” G5 geomagnetic storm that followed days of heightened amounts of solar activitiy that saw numerous magnetic eruptions on the sun’s surface.
