‘This is a real in-between picture. I always love them,’ says Rankin. Shot at London’s Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park, Rankin captured Swinton after her performance in The Maybe. For seven days, eight hours a day, Swinton lay in a glass box as viewers walked around her inviting them to question the idea of mortality. ‘There is a kind of androgyny to this shot but at the same time, because she is doing what she is doing, it feels like Swinton has broken the fourth wall between you and her.’
