In the 1950s, Derek Hitchens’ camera captured torn up postwar English landscapes as a photographer for the Royal Air Force. It must have been exciting work, though apparently he later complained about being sick and tired of having to hang out of aircraft shooting photos.

Derek was born Nov. 22, 1931, in London, one of Walter and Florence Hitchens’ three children. Walter had served with the RAF as a carpenter.
