Sony Pictures Networks India Retains UFC Broadcast Rights; Stella Artois Innovates with Fine Art Marketing

In a significant move, Sony Pictures Networks India has secured an extended multi-year rights agreement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), ensuring its exclusive media presence in India and the Indian subcontinent till 2028. This renewed association includes broadcasting 42 live UFC events, original programs, archive content, and the ‘Road to UFC’ tournament for Asia’s top MMA prospects. The deal also marks the first introduction of local language commentary in Tamil and Telugu.

Enhanced Broadcast Details and Expansion

The agreement encompasses television and digital media rights for a wide array of UFC events through 2028. This comprehensive coverage includes 42 UFC LIVE events annually, comprising 12 Pay-Per-View (PPV) and 30 Fight Night events. Sony Sports Network will continue to broadcast live the ‘win and advance’ tournament for Asia’s top MMA prospects, ROAD TO UFC.

The partnership extension allows Sony to sustain the exclusive coverage of live UFC events in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. This move caters to a larger audience base and enhances viewer engagement with expansive portfolio programming.

Stella Artois in the Realm of Fine Art

While UFC fans have something to cheer about, the Belgian beer brand, Stella Artois, dating back to 1326, has embarked on a unique journey with GUT, an innovative creative agency from Argentina. GUT has developed an algorithm that examines European paintings featuring people consuming alcohol and calculates the likelihood of the beverage being Stella Artois. Factors considered include the painting’s date, location, type of glass, color of the liquid, proximity to the original brewery, distribution reach of Artois, and potential competitors of the time.

Through this ingenious application of data analytics, GUT has positioned Stella Artois within the context of historical European art. The campaign implies that iconic artists like Manet and Van Gogh were ‘probably’ endorsing Stella Artois throughout the centuries. This creative marketing strategy leverages Stella Artois’ heritage and establishes an extraordinary connection between data analytics, fine art, and marketing. This can be viewed as a form of posthumous ‘celebrity endorsement’ from the world of art.

CHANGCHUN — A skier skimmed across the slope before suddenly stopping in a flurry of snowflakes. It happened in seconds, but the images were recorded by a photographer not far away in a succession of shots.

This photographer, Zhang Jian, is the chief of the photography team at the Songhua Lake Resort in Jilin, a city in the northeastern Chinese province of the same name. Since being introduced to the industry, the ski and photography enthusiast said he feels the job is tailor-made for him.

“The thrill of speed and the desire to push one’s limits are the charms of skiing, of which photography is the best carrier,” he said.

An art major who hails from Jilin province, Zhang landed a job as a ski resort staff member in 2010. Seeing that more skiers wanted photos on the snow, he saw it as an opportunity and worked hard to improve his skiing and photo skills.

In 2015, Zhang became one of the first contracted photographers on China’s Hey Snow app, which offers photography services to skiers. In 2018, he took the lead in setting up a ski photography studio called Snow.

He has witnessed growing demand for ski photography and the popularization of winter sports in China, boosted by the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

During the snow season in 2021-2022, Zhang’s team uploaded a total of 3.82 million photos, 23 times more than in 2018-2019, with sales exceeding 1 million yuan ($140,845). He expects to set a fresh record this season.

The Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka is looking for applicants for its 2024 Alaska Native Artist Residency Program. During the residency, artists will be expected to create art in an open-studio format and engage with the community through talks, cultural consultations, and educational programming.

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum is an organization that supports the historic museum through advocacy, acquisition, and educational programming. The group is leading the call for Native Artists to apply to the program.

Residencies can range from 20 to 22 days in length. Residency dates are already set, and will happen June 10 to July 2, July 29 to Aug. 18, Aug. 19 to Sept. 8, Sept. 12 to Oct. 2, and Oct. 3 to Oct. 24. Artists can request time off to attend the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in the fall.

Each residency position will include a $2,000 artist stipend, $840 food stipend, and travel to and from Sitka. Positions will be filled as grant funding allows.

Artists may make traditional or contemporary Native art from any medium including carving, beading, sewing, dancing, weaving, and drum making. At the end of the program, artists will present what work they completed during their residency.

The Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum said that artists will benefit from exposure to and time with collections at the museum, and from meeting people from all over the state and world while working in the museum gallery. The cultural consultations will be paid time where the Native artists can provide information and insight into the museum’s artifacts, and help further document those artifacts. The group said this time to study the museum’s collection can be inspiring to the artists.
