Ultra-High Resolution 200MP Telephoto Cameras: The Next Big Thing in Smartphone Photography

The camera is usually the main reference point for judging smartphones for two reasons: first, it is the feature most often used in everyday life, and second, assessing its performance is possible for even the untrained human eye. Smartphone cameras have improved rapidly over the last decade, but there are still obvious limitations due to the compact form factor. Each year, smartphone users expect their new devices to have better cameras in a thinner, lighter body. At the same time, more and more tech voices are commenting on the size of the camera bump and the overall thickness and weight of the device.

One of the leading solutions to this challenge is the telephoto camera, which has resulted in gradual improvements in telephoto sensor technology by the industry. With several major smartphone makers announcing the inclusion of enhanced telephoto cameras in their flagship devices, the telephoto camera is now being seen as the second main camera instead of just an extra or secondary camera. Looking to the future, the telephoto camera has emerged as a key factor driving the improvement of smartphone camera specifications.

Why Telephoto Cameras Are the Next Big Thing

Portrait photography is one of the areas in which telephoto-camera features truly shine. To shoot distant stills, many smartphone users use the high magnification mode on their telephoto camera. When it comes to portraits, however, they tend to take shots using wide mode. The issue is that the field of view distorts close objects, making it challenging to capture the subject accurately.

In the photo on the left above, the distortion of the subject has occurred due to taking a close-up shot with the main, wide camera, which has a focal length of 24mm and a field of view of about 84°. This distortion arises due to the wide camera’s short shooting distance for a close-up shot. Since the human face’s 3D shape is projected onto the 2D image sensor, the center of the face is extended compared to the face’s peripheral because of the relative distance from camera. This is called “extension distortion.” Shorter shooting distances increase the relative distance difference of facial 3D shapes, so the shorter the shooting distance, the greater the extension distortion. This explains why the wide camera is suitable for taking pictures of people against a landscape background (like at a tourist spot), but not for images in which people are the main subjects. On the other hand, a telephoto camera with a focal length of 85mm and a field of view of 29° is much less distorted at the most common magnification of 3-3.5x, making it more suitable for portrait photography.

Another reason telephoto cameras excel at portrait photography is the out-of-focus effect produced by the focal length. When all other variables are equal, the longer the focal length, the shallower the depth of field. In other words, the background around the subject will be blurred and out of focus, resulting in a photo that is more focused on the subject. So, while a wide camera is great for capturing both people and backgrounds in a tourist spot, a telephoto camera is much better for scenes that focus on the people themselves.

The Limitations of Telephoto Cameras Until Now

Currently, telephoto cameras are most often used in high-end smartphones. The optical format of image sensors for wide cameras in this segment ranges from 1/1.4″ to 1″, with image quality matching their size and features, such as high dynamic range (HDR) and high-speed shooting. In comparison, the optical format of telephoto image sensors is relatively small, ranging from 1/2.7″ to 1/2″ (besides a few exceptions). From a user perspective, such difference in specification means that telephoto cameras offer different image quality, color and HDR experiences than wide cameras. Telephoto cameras are often used for tracking subjects from a distance, such as in stadiums or concert halls, and users might find it difficult to capture photos and videos at the level of quality they want.

Comparison of Wide and Telephoto Sensors

Closing the gap between wide and telephoto cameras has become a key challenge for the smartphone industry, with the need for telephoto sensors to eventually reach the same level as wide sensors’ specifications and functions. Fortunately, as wide-angle sensor modules have become progressively larger and higher, the space for telephoto image sensor modules has grown correspondingly. Upgrading the size and capabilities of the telephoto image sensor not only allows users to maintain shooting scenarios close to those of wide sensors, but also has the added benefit of providing better out-focusing for portrait photography. This is because, for the same field of view, a larger image sensor will have a longer focal length, resulting in a shallower depth of field than a smaller telephoto sensor.

Ultra-High Resolution Sensors: Leading the ‘Second Main Camera’ Trend

ISOCELL’s ultra-high resolution image sensors are the appropriate solution for this trend of better telephoto cameras, allowing them to truly be seen as the second main camera. Unsurprisingly, the biggest strength of ultra-high resolution image sensors is their resolution, which has been proven by their successful implementation in various smartphones. They have also shown particular value in smartphones at a price point where adopting a separate telephoto camera is difficult or impossible. ISOCELL’s 200MP sensors offer 2x and 4x in-sensor zoom capability with no loss of resolution, thanks to the superior remosaic algorithm. The 4x zoom scene above shows image quality comparable to that of an optical 3x module, an outstanding achievement that makes separate optical zoom systems seem less necessary. The algorithm rearranges color pixels into an RGB Bayer pattern, so a 200MP sensor can maintain 12.5MP at 1x/2x/4x zoom with no loss of resolution. Since a smartphone’s main wide camera typically defaults to 12MP at 1x mode, this technology enables users to experience the same resolution at 2x/4x zoom.

In particular, the 200MP ISOCELL HP2 and ISOCELL HP3 improve zoomed shooting quality by applying a deep-learning-based remosaic algorithm that better enables the expression of scene-optimized details. Additionally, with flagship application processors (APs) like the Snapdragon® Mobile Platform, adopting internals that favor parallel computation, such as digital signal processors (DSPs) and graphics processing units (GPUs), has created synergy and significantly improved image quality.

Since these ultra-high resolution image sensors are inherently designed to be the main sensor, they feature advanced technologies to enhance image quality. The sensors make use of the Tetra²pixel function, which merges up to 16 neighboring pixels to enhance low-light image quality They also provide better performance for HDR and frames per second (FPS). Then there is the 1/1.3″ to 1/1.4″ large optical format, which can capture images with improved out-focus when compared to conventional telephoto sensors. Through these key advantages, 200MP ISOCELL image sensors are overcoming the barrier between wide and telephoto cameras, providing consistent image quality between main and sub cameras as well as innovative user experiences for flagship smartphone users.

For example, on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor, lossless zoom scenarios can be run from 3x to 6x to 12x. This impressive capability means that more diverse scenes can be captured without any loss of resolution. In everyday life, and especially at tourist spots, there are often moments when users not only want to capture the entire foreground but also zoom in on a specific area, such as the buildings in the image below. But having a subject that is farther away means that moving just a few steps results in an image that is very different from the one seen at the previous wide angle. In addition to the lack of zoom capabilities in existing smartphone cameras, the poor image quality of low resolution telephoto sensors is a major point of frustration when users get up close to their subjects. This is why ultra-high resolution image sensors in telephoto cameras are such an effective solution: users can capture more accurate, colorful memories of their environment, from the same place and at the angle of their choice.

SARANAC LAKE — Nature photographer Warren Greene will showcase his work at Saranac Village at Will Rogers this Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Greene will present a slideshow of his work encompassing primarily birds, a variety of other wildlife and the natural world.

Greene has been shooting photos for close to 50 years, fulfilling his lifelong love of nature and a passion for photography in which he captures wildlife in the most vivid way.

Greene is known to travel great distances and is willing to be patient for long hours to create these shots. His work has been shown in various books, magazines and calendars.

He has been recognized by the Cape May Observatory as photographer of the month, and his work can periodically be seen on naturescapes.net, an online resource for photographers.

Greene, who is retired from the Fulton County Probation Department and the Family Counseling Center, is now a Fulton County supervisor representing his hometown ward in Gloversville.

PARKERSBURG — The fourth annual Traditional Living Youth Art Show sponsored by the Children’s Home Society will open with a reception 5-6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Parkersburg Art Center.

Exhibits are from youth participating in the Transitional Living Program.

The program helps youth struggling with homelessness and staff supporting them on their way to independence and a hope-filled future. Children’s Home Society youth programs and services help youth concentrate on longer-term goals for education, employment and career planning.

The Transitional Living Art Show is in collaboration with the Parkersburg Art Center at 725 Market St.

The opening reception will include entertainment provided by Moon King, a singer and songwriter from Parkersburg. Light refreshments will be served.

The event is free, however, donations in support of youth services are welcomed and appreciated.

Take us back to the beginning. Where did the idea come from and what capital did you have?

When I came back from working in the Middle East I decided it was time to do something that really mattered. I’d grown up in an artistic household, seen artists struggle to make a living despite being crazy talented and realised if the rest of the world was moving online, then so too must art. We had almost no capital, and after a modest initial investment built everything ourselves with whatever income we made selling art.

How long did it take before you were confident you could make bluethumb a success?

We were bootstrapped for four years, and three-and-a-half years in I just decided to quit work and go for it. We were lucky enough to find fantastic investors quickly (this is unusual) and from there, with some capital, we grew exponentially. It was then we realised how big it could grow and the contribution we could make to the Australian art industry.

Beyond leading lines: Composition tips for compelling landscape photography (Part two)

This is part two of a two part series on composition tips for landscape photographers. You can read part one, from last week, here. 

Shape light and natural vignettes (dark-to-bright transitions)

Vignettes—where the periphery of the frame is darkened—are an essential technique in photography. But why?

Our eyes are drawn to more luminous areas. So with darker edges, your viewers will drift towards the brighter areas in the centre of the image.

In Lightroom, I’ll often use a gradient mask to lower the exposure in the foreground, transitioning up to a brighter subject in the middle of the frame. (Ideally one that is already being lit with natural light to help it stand out.)

And while vignettes are often left for the post-processing stage, you can also achieve a similar effect in the field. By carefully observing light and considering your framing.

Let’s consider my composition thought process behind this image of Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians.

First: Determine the details. I wanted to distil this waterfall down to its core elements: the water trails and the rock wall they spilled down. So, I opted for a telephoto lens to focus purely on the streaming water. This eliminated other distractions, like the bright sky above and the messy river in the foreground.

Second: Centre in on the scene. This section was an isolated section set amongst the much wider falls. I took a few portrait frames of the vertical cascades. But after reviewing the images on my camera—they felt too cramped, with bright white water filling the entire frame.

Third: Finesse the frame. Next, I rotated my camera to landscape orientation. I found the most balanced cross-section of the cascade. And, most importantly, the shift to the horizontal frame now included black rocks to the left and right—acting as a naturally darker vignette to frame the brighter falls.

When you’re out in the field, you might exclude bright rocks in the periphery that are glowing with direct light. Or you could try to find foreground ferns in shadow that point towards a brighter midground tree.

And you might decide to break this rule altogether. By using a lighter periphery to frame a darker central subject—such as bright leaves framing the dark branches of a shapely tree.

To harness this composition technique, be mindful of the luminosity transitions across your images. The key is to use those variations to frame and highlight your main subject.

Turn away from sunrise to harness directional light

For many years, my photography was centred around bold sunrises and sunsets.

That meant shooting into a (very) intense light source. And while this produces brilliant colours—when the clouds align—it also results in many harsh shadows and dim landscapes.

I still chase bold skies, but now I pay equal attention to the quality of light falling across the entire lay of the land—not purely the colours in the sky.

My tip? Instead of shooting directly into a sunrise, turn around and look for frames where the sun shines perpendicular onto the landscape.

From a compositional perspective, the directional light will add shape and create a sense of dimensionality. Even softer light will highlight contours in the land. In fact, I often prefer diffused light as it’s not too intense with white-hot highlights and pitch-black shadows.

Directional light can bring a flat scene to vivid life and inject depth into your composition.

Consider this image of the (former) Lake Pedder in Tasmania’s remote southwest below.

Southwest National Park, Tasmania. A tiny fragment of the reservoir that’s still known as Lake Pedder. On the surface, it’s decidedly beautiful. But it’s a shallow substitute for the wilderness that once was. The directional light helped to add form and depth to the scene. Sony A7R Mark III, 70-200mm f/2.8 lens @ 111mm. 1/30s @ f10, ISO 100.

Sunrise was out to the east. But after surveying how the light was falling across the rolling landscape, I decided to turn northwest—and I’m so glad I did.

The side light emphasised the shapes and forms in the hills, drawing attention to the layers and adding dimensionality to an otherwise static image.

Avoid these elements (most of the time)

So far, we’ve explored what you should do or include. But often, the most powerful compositional choices you can make are the things you avoid and don’t do.

There’s an old expression that photography is the art of exclusion. Painters slowly add elements to their canvas, shaping light and colour with each stroke. Whereas we photographers often seek to remove or obscure distractions.

Here are a few composition tips on what to avoid:

Centred subjects: Unless you’re intentionally seeking perfect symmetry, a centred subject will be too quickly processed by the viewer.Their visual journey will be over before it begins.

Instead, recognise that some degree of tension can be a good thing, like sweet and sour sauce or an unexpected bridge partway through a song. By offsetting subjects in the frame—and harnessing some of the earlier compositional choices—viewers will process your image more deeply and for longer.

Overlapping zones: Sometimes you’ll want to crouch low and send your seastack soaring above the horizon line. On the other hand, for example, bushes that poke up into a tranquil river stream can be a distracting edge and disrupt the flow of the scene.

The solution? Move your tripod, gain elevation, or obscure the offending element behind a tree trunk or rock. The key is to keep the edges between zones as distinct as possible.

Busy borders: Clean, open borders provide breathing room around your main subjects. So, avoid harsh edge shadows or lines that run parallel to a border. And look out for lines (such as overhead branches) that cut through a corner of the frame. The fix? Alter your crop to make the lines appear less precise—we’re showcasing imperfect landscapes, not geometrical renderings.

Final thoughts

Earlier, I referenced the idea of photography as storytelling. And you’ve likely heard this expression time and again. But it’s true—and it underlies most of the theory behind strong compositions.

If you point your cameras at a grand waterfall or a bold sunset, great—but more often than not, that’s just a pretty snapshot.

It’s nice to look at, but rarely will it hold attention. To do that, you need to tell a richer story. To harness (or obscure) surrounding elements and imbue the scene with deeper meaning.

Strong compositions ensure your work stands out from the crowd. That it holds its own amongst the millions of other images of Bombo Quarry or famous waterfalls.

Above all else, the key to compelling compositions is time.

Memorable landscape photos aren’t rushed and are rarely taken on a whim. They require careful consideration. By taking the time to learn and apply composition techniques (like the ones explored here), you’ll become more aware of the concepts to look for in the field.

You’ll be able to work a scene until you create the most appealing composition to tell a richer story of your experience.

One last note: I’ve never been a fan of theory for theory’s sake.

I encourage you to be mindful of the concepts explored above—not all are appropriate all of the time. A luminous high-key image, such as a tree in snow, will always be processed very differently from a seascape sunrise. Take time to apply the theories in service of your creative vision, but don’t be afraid to ignore them when they aren’t. ❂

Marilyn Manson has been sentenced by a judge in New Hampshire for blowing his nose on a photographer in an incident the judge called “egregious”.

The musician will serve 20 hours of community service and pay around $1,400 (£1,100) in fines for the 2019 misdemeanour at his concert.

The singer, whose real name is Brian Warner, was required to appear in court in person on Monday.

The judge said he would be permitted to do his service work in California.

Manson, 54, had initially pleaded not guilty to the assault charges, but later changed his plea to no contest. The no contest plea means he did not contest the charge, but was not required to admit guilt.

According to a police report, Manson, 54, spat on the woman on 19 August 2019 as she filmed his performance at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in Gilford.

The police investigator, who reviewed footage of the event, said Manson was seen putting his face close to the camera held by photographer Susan Fountain and spitting a “big lougee” at her.

A moment later he returned, kneeled over her and placed his hand over one nostril before launching a “significant amount of mucus” onto her.

The police report adds that the camera shows Manson “point and laugh at Fountain as she gets down and walks away”.

In a statement read in court, Ms Fountain said, “I’ve never been humiliated or treated like I was by this defendant.

“For him to spit on me and blow his nose on me was the most disgusting thing a human being has ever done.”

As part of his punishment Manson must also alert police to any concerts planned for New Hampshire for the next two years, and provide proof that his community service has been completed by no later than 4 February 2024.

Manson, who wore a black suit in court, spoke to the judge twice. He acknowledged his name – Brian Warner – and said “yes” when asked if he understood the sentence.

Speaking to reporters outside court, Manson said he plans to perform his service with “people in recovery”.

Manson has released 11 studio albums since 1994, three of which have reached the top 10 in the UK.

His biggest hit single was a cover of Tainted Love, which reached number five in 2001.

He has faced multiple accusations of sexual assault in recent years and has attempted to sue an alleged victim, claiming that she has harmed his career.
