The Landscapes of Sebastian Bahr Captured in Analog

Born in St. Petersburg, Kira Gyngazova has been spending her time between Asia and Europe, from Bangkok to Paris, for about ten years. These constant transfers have affected not only her life but also her photography. In fact, it was when she first moved that Kira Gyngazova felt the need to buy a camera and start capturing her surroundings, new faces, new roads, new places. 

Over time, Kira shifted her focus to people living in cities, trying to show how sometimes life in large hyper-populated metropolises can be lonely. Kira Gyngazova herself, with each new move, noticed how easy it was to live among millions of people and still feel lonely and how cities turned into deserts. 

Precisely for this reason, her shots tell of half-empty places where everyone lives their lives alone, of people sitting on a bus or a ferry with their eyes lost in the void, surrounded by as many empty and indifferent glances. 

Moreover, the loneliness of people seems to surround the places, the bare, monochrome rooms, the deserted metro stops.

Niagara’s climate and abundance of cherry and peach orchards make for a dazzling spring display that few regions in Canada get to experience.

It takes only a day or two of sunny, balmy temperatures to cause the blossoms to burst into bloom, but their beauty is fleeting with at most a two-week window of opportunity to capture them with your camera.

Here are some photo tips to make the most of this short-lived but magnificent spectacle.

Blue skies … or cloudy

• The pink of cherry blossoms contrasted with a clear blue sky always creates an eye-popping image. However, don’t overlook the soft, diffused light of a cloudy day, or the warm light of early morning and late afternoon/evening when the sun is low in the sky. Cloudy days have the advantage of even lighting, without the harsh shadows and overexposed highlights that may ruin your photo.

Rainy days can be good days 

• April showers bring May flowers — but rain can enhance your flower photography as well. If you venture out with your camera after a rain shower, capture the blooms with raindrops still clinging to them. Or bring along a small spray bottle of water on your next photo outing — no one will know the difference, and your feet will be dry!

Get up close

• Don’t be afraid to get up close and personal with flowers. I like to get close enough to fill the entire frame with my chosen subject. In the absence of a macro or close-up lens, today’s cellphones do an admirable job of close-focusing.

Background check

• Pay close attention to the background — try to find one with as few distracting elements as possible. Isolating a few blossoms on the tree with dreamy out-of-focus blossoms in the background is a good strategy. Experiment with different angles and viewpoints. Shoot low to the ground, at flower level, and get a “bug’s-eye view.”

Portrait … or food mode 

• Most cellphone cameras have a portrait mode, as well as a food photography mode. These work well when you want to keep your flower subject in sharp focus while creating a lovely soft, blurred background and foreground.

Leading lines

• Use “leading lines” to guide the viewer’s eye into your photo — especially when shooting orchards in bloom, and fields of lavender and tulips.

Lots of blossoms

• Magnolias and daffodils are the first harbingers of blossom time in Niagara, followed by cherry/peach blossoms, then tulips; lilacs in mid-May, followed by peonies and irises in June. Check the website of your local botanical gardens to see what’s currently in bloom. Pick-your-own tulip and lavender fields have become popular attractions in the last few years; many are designed with Instagram-worthy selfies in mind. Enjoy all that the spring blossom season has to offer the photo enthusiast — but don’t wait too long to get out there!

Tune into Your Own Brain Waves with Steve Parker’s Suspended Constellations of Salvaged Brass

Many therapists advise patients to reconnect with their inner voice, a part of treatment that, as anyone who’s tried it can attest, is easier said than done. But what if you could tune into to your internal ups and downs in the same way you listen to a song?

In his Sonic Meditation for Solo Performer series, Austin-based artist and musician Steve Parker fashions immersive installations of salvaged brass. Suspended in clusters with their bells pointing every direction, the instruments envelop a single viewer, who wears an EEG brain monitor and silently reads a series of meditations. A custom software program translates the ensuing brain waves into a 16-part composition played through the winds. The result is a multi-sensory experience that wraps the viewer in the soft vibration of sound waves and makes their inner monologue audible.

Parker frequently incorporates unique ways to interact with instruments into his practice, including in the sprawling 2020 work titled “Ghost Box,” which produced sound in response to human touch. He recently installed the towering purple “Fanfare” sculpture in a Meridian, Idaho, public park, which similarly invites the public to listen to the sounds of the surrounding environment through small trumpet bells at the base.

Forest City FFA students launch aerial photography, land surveying services

Three Forest City High School students and FFA members, supported by FFA Advisor Ryan Faught and others, have worked hard to bring an innovative project to life.

Jacob Beenken, Landon Patten, and Chase Sorensen embarked on a journey several months ago to raise funds to purchase a land surveying drone. The goal was to offer aerial photography and surveying services for area farmers.

They started by compiling a business plan and then successfully raised $5,600 from donors to support this project. The funding covered the cost of the recently purchased Autel 2 Evo Pro V3 drone, which is a land surveying drone with a 6K camera. It not only takes high-quality aerial photos but can also provide precise land surveying information to create prescriptions, spot irregularities in crops, and create detailed growth maps.

To promote their services, the students have created a website, www.forestcityffaaerialphotography.com. They offer survey options as a cost per acre and various aerial photography packages.

Drone technology is a rapidly growing part of the commercial ag industry. It provides many occupational opportunities and new, more productive ways to produce crops.

Jacob Beenken, as part of the requirement to launch this project, obtained his Part 107 Remote Pilot License from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly the drone. This training covered topics including regulations related to small (unmanned) aircraft systems, operating requirements, emergency procedures, and privacy.

Beenken and Patten also worked with Matt Maus, of HTS Ag, who delivered the drone to the group and provided training on its setup, software, and operation. They said they are not aware of another FFA group that has tacked a project such as this. They noted being excited to bring this technology to local farmers and to gain real-world experience.
