Meet the Kyiv-based curator exploring Ukrainian history through the lens of photography
The exhibition Generations of Resilience, which opened last week at Brussels’ Hangar Photo Art Centre, brings together the artistic universes of 22 Ukrainian photographers spanning three generations. Fittingly spread out over three floors, one per generation, this haunting and poetic show traces recurring visual motifs – along with the ongoing struggle for freedom and search for identity – throughout the country’s photographic history. Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022, Ukraine has been at war, and life – and art – have changed in every way.
The Parliament’s Sarah Schug sat down with the creative mind behind the exhibition, Kyiv-based curator Kateryna Radchenko, to discuss the disappearance of the conceptual photography genre in the country, the challenges of organising an exhibition during wartime and art as a means of survival.
How do you ensure the war doesn’t overshadow the exhibition – or do you want to use it to draw (the at times diminishing) attention to the invasion? Is there a political dimension to it?
Life in Ukraine is all political. Just take my personal life experience: I was born at the end of the 80s, and lived through the Soviet period, gaining independence, the political and economic changes of the 90s, the first revolution in 1991, the second revolution in 2004, the revolution from 2013 to 2014. Now, there’s the war. All my life I’ve been affected by political changes.
It’s not possible to separate it from politics. You can see it through the exhibited works by photographers from three different generations. We didn’t have a plan to only select artists who incorporate a socio-political reflection in their work – it’s just unavoidable that these events influence the artists and change their practices.
What do the generations featured have in common?
Having to fight all the time – for your identity, for your country, for a better life. The Kharkiv School of Photography, which emerged in the 70s and 80s, was a revolutionary movement created to fight the Soviet system by exposing and criticising the reality of life at the time. It was a visual protest: photography was used to stand up against the system. Then, after Soviet rule ended in the 1990s and 2000s, the main questions were, “What is Ukraine?” and “What is a Ukrainian artist”?
It was a search for identity, something that shone through in the work of photographers who explored these questions through all kinds of aspects, from the body and culture to the social and the political.
Now, it’s again on another level. We’re already 10 years into the war and two years inside a full-scale war. This means that the young generation, 18 to 20-year-olds, have spent half their lives in wartime. It’s difficult to imagine how traumatised these kids are. This is also reflected in their photography, through which they try to deal with this traumatic experience and find a way to live with it.
That’s what connects all generations – this fight and using photography not only to archive moments but also to pass through their traumatic experiences and search for a way to move forward. There is also a connection through the visual language. The photographers from the Kharkiv School opened new horizons through their different experiments with collages and painting on photographs, methods that reappear in contemporary works.
Using photography to take distance from what’s happening and analysing it can also be a form of protest. Having the camera in between can give you a different perspective.
Does the war also foster a movement in the opposite direction – escapist art, so to speak?
Most projects by young photographers are connected to the war. It’s not possible to think about something different when living in Ukraine. You can’t think about self-discovery when it’s not relevant to the war. You can’t think about ecology when it’s not relevant to the war. It’s not possible. Even artists who don’t live in Ukraine. Everyone has relatives and friends there, and everyone knows someone on the frontline. It’s always present.
What were the logistical challenges in organising the show considering the current situation in Ukraine?
The original works came from the Kharkiv Museum of Photography. When the escalation started, its staff managed to bring the collection to [the European Union], and the collection is now based in Germany. As to the new generation, all works were sent digitally and printed here.
What’s the photography and artistic scene in Ukraine like right now? Are events still being organised?
Everything depends on the district you live in. Closer to the frontline it’s dangerous: there is no art, not even access to food sometimes. It’s dangerous and bombs fall daily. It’s all about hiding and surviving. Big cities like Odessa or Kharkiv are in risky territory – they’re on Russia’s radar. You have a lot of rockets but still, life is going on. Public events are happening, including art. It’s a question of how to work with this new reality. When you go to the theatre and hear a siren, everything will be stopped and you go to the shelter. In the western part [of the country], there are fewer attacks and more events, adapting to the new conditions and safety rules.
Art is back because you still have to live and move forward. Art helps with that. It helps to catch a break, to process things, and share experiences.
What does this mean for the photography festival you have been organising in Odessa?
Unfortunately, we are not able to do it in the same format as in the past when it included a lot of different exhibitions and gatherings. There are no shelters in Odessa, and we as organisers don’t want to carry the responsibility for other people’s lives. When you gather people, you have to provide shelter and when there’s no shelter, it’s better not to gather. That’s why our team has changed the format. Instead of the festival, we offer different support programs for Ukrainian photographers: mentorship for teenagers, a support program for photographers on the frontline, lectures… We are doing a lot but in a different way.
Has there been a shift in Ukrainian photography caused by the current war?
The war changed photography styles. In the exhibition, we show photography series by the same artists from before and after the escalation, and you can see radical changes. One artist for example, who used to paint on his photographs, using colour and humour, now shoots black and white images from the frontline. Humour is an element often present in Ukrainian art; it helps you to survive. Another [photographer] used to do street photography with a dash of irony; now he is making portraits of wives and kids who lost their men and fathers in the war. A lot of photographers switched and became war photographers.
It’s not possible to think about something else [other] than the war. Life in Ukraine has changed at such a rapid pace; each day you have to adapt to something new. First it was rockets, then ballistics, then drones, then a winter without electricity and light. Each time, there’s something new. All this adaptation to things you never had to deal with before takes so much energy. Artists in Ukraine mostly try to document these daily changes because, in order to be able to do conceptual work, you need time and a safe space to reflect. We don’t have that.
What do you hope visitors take away from the exhibition?
I hope it shines a light not just on Ukrainian photography but also on Ukrainian history. That it becomes clear that our fight has not just been going on for the last two years, but much longer – that we have been fighting generation after generation after generation. [I hope] that it becomes clear that we decided in which direction we want to move, and that we are dying for it. This is our decision, about our identity, who we are.
With this recent escalation, Ukraine was put on the global map, but people didn’t know much about it. I hope this exhibition clarifies the historical, political and social connections, and helps people understand what is happening today.
You live in Kyiv. Was it always clear that you wanted to stay?
I didn’t want to leave, even though it’s dangerous. It’s a question of fighting and luck. You can be killed at any time. But I don’t want to leave my family.
Ukraine is going through radical historical changes, and for me, it’s important to be part of it. I think it gives me the chance and the right to do this exhibition, to share what’s happening, from an artistic but also from a personal perspective. If I lived abroad, it wouldn’t be fair. Like this, I can observe how life has changed myself, and I don’t have to rely on the media which doesn’t always provide the right information.
How did you come up with the idea for the exhibition?
Hangar invited me to do a show, and we started talking about it a year ago. But everything in Ukraine changes so fast, and we revisited the idea six months ago. For me, it was also important to understand the situation in Belgium and how to speak to the Belgian audience. I learned that the Kharkiv School had never been shown here before which is why I wanted to start with this historical aspect.
Additionally, I wanted to make sure to not just show works dealing with the war. There is a lot of that in the media and other shows already. I wanted to go a bit deeper and not just stay on the surface. I hope I managed to show another perspective, the historical connections – something that can be relevant for other countries as well.

Reencle Gravity Is Designed for Kitchen-To-Garden Circularity
There’s no doubt composting is beneficial to all, but the space (and time) required to tend to it manually has primarily existed in the realm of suburban or rural households – until now. In the last few years, at-home composting machines that speed up the process have allowed smaller households and apartment dwellers in urban environments the option to turn common kitchen scraps into nutrient-rich soil to add to balcony gardens, household plants, and planter boxes. The Reencle Gravity is one of these newly announced kitchen appliances designed to deliver composting into every household with respect to space and interior design.
Reencle’s Gravity is unassuming, yet modern, a design that earned the composter a 2023 Red Dot Design Award in the “Household Appliances and Household Accessories” category.
The term “circular design” has increasingly become a buzzword amongst designers, a philosophy and practice where every stage of a product’s lifecycle is carefully considered to ensure zero waste – from sourcing to manufacturing, all the way to the eventual “disposal” of a product when it goes kaput. The age-old practice of composting could be deemed the ultimate example of circular design, turning daily food waste into nutrient rich soil that can be used to grow more food. One hurdle beyond space is the learning curve for composting. Throwing out food scraps to allow microorganisms to work their digestive magic is convenient outdoors, but indoors can introduce a malodorous bouquet that might turn you off from the practice. The Reencle Gravity is designed as a beginner-friendly kitchen appliance addressing this issue.
It’s best to imagine the Reencle Gravity roughly as a robotic stomach, one that most likely can consume a lot more than you (thankfully)! Just like our own gut, the device hosts a community of self-replicating microorganisms chosen to break down food waste thrown into its bin. It does so using a brushless direct current motor to turn and churn food into digestible particles, creating optimal conditions for microorganisms to convert solid matter into material beneficial to many plants and trees (just don’t add compost to your cactus and succulents, a category of plants that prefer fast draining and nutrient poor soils).
The Gravity is actually the brand’s third compost machine, improving on their previous Prime model with a larger daily processing capacity of 3.3lbs. This third iteration is now quieter, operating at 24dB compared to the previous model’s 28dB performance, and utilizes roughly 47W of electricity per month when plugged in 24/7.
Reencle has also added a useful weight sensor, allowing users to track how much they’ve added into the machine via an app, which helps to control the rate of composting. Just like us, microorganisms need sufficient time to digest, and by not overburdening the process, you reduce the possibility of odors. Properly loaded, the Gravity turns food into compost in just 24 hours, and does so in a form factor no larger than a typical kitchen waste bin.
As the owner of the previous Prime model, I can report the machine occasionally makes “digestive” sounds when new food items are added, but mostly remains silent throughout the day. It’s also deeply satisfying when emptying the canister into the garden rather than throwing scraps into the trash. The Prime and Gravity both require a portion of the microorganism starter material to continue maintaining the digestive community within.
Compost appliances, like the Reencle Gravity, allow everyone to integrate circular daily habits into their lives conveniently, and arguably with more evident and personal satisfaction when compared to established habits such as recycling. Lookout Mt. conservation photographs added to UTC Library Collection

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently debuted Lookout Mountain Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) photographs as a part of its Digital Collections.
The digital collection launched in fall 2023 around the 90th anniversary of the arrival of crews from the Civilian Conversation Corps to Lookout Mountain. It includes 25 photographs of the environment and workers taken between 1933 and 1939.

Despite the existence of several different camps in the area, the collection focuses on the Lookout Mountain crew, said Carolyn Runyon, assistant head of collection services for the UTC Library and director of special collections.

“One of the things that drives our decisions is our collection development policy, and our particular focus is on Chattanooga and the surrounding area. When we evaluated the materials for digitization, we chose images that we’re fairly sure are of Lookout Mountain and not other CCC sites that might be captured in this collection,” Runyon said.
Runyon said the digitization process for the collection started in March 2023.
The CCC was a New Deal program created by Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide work relief for unemployed and unmarried men aged between 17 and 28. The program ran from 1933 to 1942.
The camp on Lookout Mountain, called MP-5 or Camp Adolph Ochs, was made up of roughly 200 men who worked under the supervision of the National Park Service on the environmental conservation and infrastructure of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and the Chattanooga-Lookout Mountain Park.

The men specifically worked on cutting firebreaks, maintaining trails, constructing park benches and tables, and planting greenery throughout their time in Chattanooga.

Chattanooga-Lookout Mountain Park was private land purchased by brothers Adolph and Milton Ochs and other local investors. The Ochs brothers, as president and vice president of the Chattanooga-Lookout Mountain Park Association, donated the park to the federal government; it was officially absorbed into Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in 1935.
UTC acquired the collection in 2017 following the dissolution of the Chattanooga History Center. The center began as a volunteer organization in the 1970s on Missionary Ridge, and the CCC collection was given to the center by an unknown donor.
“I was thrilled to get this collection to work with,” UTC Manuscripts Archivist Molly Copeland said. “The whole idea of the Scenic City and it being a tourist attraction for its nature parks and public nature areas and trails has been around since the late 1800s, but to see it in development through these photographs is exciting.
“There are a lot of national park enthusiasts in Chattanooga and I imagine these images will be interesting to them. It just adds a visual component to our history.”

A fateful encounter with a “goddess” teenager named Kagura Tennouzou grants him the ability to destroy anything he takes a photo of. Despite being jaded and cynical, Tatsumi does his job passionately and works for a regular magazine.
6) Kazuya Maeda (Photokano)

The English photographer BRIAN GRIFFIN has died
The English photographer Brian Griffin has died at the age of 75.
Griffin had become famous for his iconic portraits and album covers of celebrated artists such as Depeche Mode and Iggy Pop.
Born in Birmingham, he graduated from the Manchester School of Art in 1972 and moved to London at the dawn of punk, being drawn into the orbit of Stiff Records. Combining commissioned musical portraits with his own artistic inclinations, Brian Griffin helped define the visual language of British pop at the dawn of the ’80s.
His many historic portraits of The Jam and Elvis Costello, his work has been used on the cover of seminal albums by the likes of Joe Jackson, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Echo & The Bunnymen and more.
It is perhaps his work with Depeche Mode that represents Brian Griffin’s closest connection to the world of music.
His photography was used on the band’s first five studio albums, while the shot of “A Broken Frame” would later be named Photograph Of The Decade by Time in 1990.
The Battle of the Big Three: Which Smartphone Delivers the Best Images?

With the recent release of the Samsung S24 Ultra, North America now has three premium-priced phones that happen to compete in a very similar way against each other. The Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, Google Pixel 8 Pro, and Samsung S24 Ultra, all have state-of-the-art displays, HDR-compliant photos and videos, and a 5X telephoto lens to compliment the main and ultra-wide cameras.
In Canada, there are very few major players in the mobile phone market beyond the big three. Samsung, Apple, and Google, easily dominate the field, leaving a few scraps to companies such as Motorola or LG. In the U.S. market, the story is similar although quite a few more companies are jockeying for the remaining customers. Still, these brands sit at the top, so we decided to test them out based on criteria focused on photographic and videography applications.
Of course, the efficacy of a smartphone goes well beyond the confines of its photographic capabilities, but creators do rely on smartphones for a lot of their visual work nowadays, and the image quality only gets better and better. A phone needs to deliver sharp images, good performance in low-light situations, and convincing AI tools for portraits and editing purposes. So with that being said let’s get right into the cameras themselves.
The Ultra-Wide Cameras
The ultra-wide cameras on all three of our smartphones deliver similar results and can be used for some startling close macro shots. However, they do have some differentiating factors worth noting.
In second (or third, depending on how you look at it) place, we gave a tie between the Samsung S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max. With both cameras sporting a similar 13mm full-frame equivalent focal length, 12-megapixel resolution, and the same f/2.2 aperture, there is no clear winner here. Both are fun to use for close-ups and both give middling results in darker conditions.
The real winner goes to the Google Pixel 8 Pro. Google has improved the camera hardware across the board in its latest handheld, and the ultra-wide camera is wider at an 11mm full-frame equivalent, with a brighter f/1.95 aperture, and a whopping 48-megapixel sensor. More light and more megapixels with an even wider field of view make Google stand out from the crowd.
The Main Cameras
The main camera of a smartphone will be its best one and is relied on heavily to create detailed depth maps for portrait work as well as provide data to up-res other cameras and create digital lenses that fall in between the phone’s other physical cameras. It’s also your best option in low-light situations and when higher megapixels are desired. With all this responsibility, it better be a good one.
In third place, we found the Samsung S24 Ultra as having the weakest of the main cameras. Don’t get me wrong though, it’s an excellent camera overall. However, it does tend to have an overly processed look to its images, something which S23 owners also complained about. Colors sometimes look pleasing but sometimes look overly vivid or harsh in tone. Lastly, the 200-megapixel mode, while unique, goes largely unused. The high megapixel mode only works for taking JPEGs, takes up a fair amount of storage, and gives only a minor increase in detail that will go unnoticed in most situations.
In second place we like the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max for having a soothing warm tone to its images and good performance overall. It has a similar amount of detail to the Samsung S24 Ultra but without the harsh over-sharpened effect baked in. If you want a bump in contrast, you can always add it later.
Our winner in this category is again the Google Pixel 8 Pro thanks to a main camera that seemed to capture more detail and finer detail than its competitors. Although the specs tilt only slightly in Google’s favor, the results tend to be the best, and the overall color is natural and balanced which allows the user to have a neutral starting point from which to make further edits. The physically larger sensor also delivers shallower depth-of-field than its rivals.
The 5x Telephoto Cameras
With the Samsung 24 Ultra making a controversial move to a 5x lens instead of its storied 10x, all three smartphones now have a similar range. While there are still additional levels of zoom across all the cameras, we wanted to stick to the physical lenses present. It’s worth noting that the S24 Ultra does have a 3x lens as well but it is fairly low spec and isn’t as useful to fill the smaller gap between the 1x and 5x on the new phone.
At the bottom of the pile, the iPhone 15 Pro Max debuted a new compact 5X lens but one that has a relatively low 12-megapixel count. In social media applications, the low megapixels are invisible but when used for printing, cropping, or to display on larger screens, the iPhone shows its weakness with noticeably less detail than its competitors.
Second place goes to the Samsung S24 Ultra with its very well-stabilized 5x lens that delivers sharp results. The only draw against it is thanks to the slower f/3.4 aperture when the other phones are pushing f/2.8. Regardless, I applaud the new 5x lens in the Samsung, and thanks to its 48-megapixel sensor a 10x cropped lens is still available with similar results given to the 10x lens in the S23 Ultra.
That means the Google Pixel 8 Pro, again, is the winner. The recent updates to the hardware in the 8 Pro are paying dividends. The 5x lens is a 48-megapixel, 112mm full-frame equivalent lens with an f/2.8 aperture and delivers well-stabilized images. It sneaks a minor win over the S24 Ultra thanks to its brighter lens.
Portrait Modes
Portrait mode is something I use often on whichever phone is in my pocket. Thanks to a combination of depth maps, multiple lenses, and multiple points of focus, all three smartphones can deliver a shallow depth-of-field look to images. This is especially useful for classic portraits but I also use it to give a soft background to product shots and macro shots too.
All three phones can also apply a portrait mode effect to images after the shot is taken, and the level of blur can be adjusted to the user’s taste. Oddly, the Google Pixel 8 Pro cannot use portrait mode with its new 5x lens so any adjustments to the depth-of-field have to be done after the image is taken.
The Google Pixel 8 Pro is going to take last place when it comes to portrait mode. Google has long struggled with seamlessly blending the subject into the background and that doesn’t change here. Portrait mode often leaves a noticeable halo around subjects and areas that should be out of focus are still sharp. The transitions from sharp to soft areas are the least natural out of the Google Pixel 8 Pro. It’s worth pointing out that the Pixel also shoots portrait mode as a 1.5x focal length rather than the 1x on the other phones.
In second place the Samsung S24 Ultra handles what should be in focus and what should be out remarkably well. It also does better with hair than Google does, however, it tends to deal with errant hairs and flyaways by simply cropping them out or blurring them out unnaturally. This still tends to be more convincing than obvious halos, but it is better suited to people with short, close-cropped hair.
The winner, despite the lackluster detail on the 5x lens, is the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Apple based the look of the bokeh in the 15 series on famous photographic portrait lenses and the results are convincing. Not only do subjects blend naturally with their environments, but they also seamlessly fall off from in-focus to out-of-focus areas. Hair has a more natural rendering, and the iPhone simply has the most “traditional” camera look to its portraits.
Night Photography
One of the big downsides to any phone is its relatively small sensor size, which is a real problem as far as low-light photography is concerned. Phones counteract this by shooting multiple frames and combining them as well as applying noise reduction to the images. In most cases, this allows for decent handheld shots to be achieved, even in fairly dark situations. Tripods can be useful but are rarely utilized on phones due to the inherent inconvenience of using one.
The iPhone has a good night mode setting but it’s the least useful of the bunch. Limited to 12 megapixels, it also shows the most noise in the images although it does maintain good color rendition in low-light scenes. The night mode is also automatic in the sense that the iPhone decides when it is appropriate or not. We far prefer to be able to use it when we want to, to force longer shutter speeds and gather more light, or deal with harsh contrast and boost shadows ourselves.
Second place goes to the Samsung S24 Ultra. Like the iPhone 15 series, the S24 is locked at 12-megapixels maximum. However, it applies a fair amount of noise reduction and sharpening that causes some loss of subtlety in between tones. Samsung’s “Nightography” processing may be heavy-handed but is surprisingly effective in dark scenes and delivers detail that punches above its weight.
The win goes to the Google Pixel 8 Pro which builds on the already excellent reputation earned by its predecessors. You get 50-megapixel images stacked from multiple shots that have good noise control and plenty of detail. I like the color and quality of shots out of night mode, and the Google Pixel 8 Pro can even rival larger-sensor cameras with a tripod.
Videography
The smartphone has become a primary camera for a content creator’s main work and nowhere is that more true than in the realm of video. With reels and short-form videos taking over, the smartphone is a convenient and effective tool that you always have with you. But it doesn’t just have to be a point-and-shoot affair. Modern phones have very capable video recording to go with their take-it-anywhere convenience.
The Google Pixel 8 Pro needs some work, however. The 4K video lacks detail and relies on an over-processed look to wow you. Casual users might be fine with this, but content creators can find better elsewhere.
The Samsung S24 Ultra is more feature-rich with its 8K record modes and excellent manual controls. As Android phones go, the S24 Ultra is the best you’ll find, and third-party apps can unlock even more potential.
The Apple iPhone 15 Pro has run away with the video market. Its log profile is more malleable and can deliver natural-looking tones, and wider dynamic range to boot. You’ll have to download apps like Black Magic’s highly capable video software, but the results are worth it. Apple also gives proper locked-off frame rates and an HDR profile which is better processed and universally accepted.
The Battle of the Big Three Smartphones: The Tally
Due largely to the updated hardware in the Google Pixel 8 Pro and with a lot of weight given to individual lenses, the latest Google phone has a lot going for it. I love the raw file quality and overall color of the Pixel, but I wouldn’t rely on it for advanced video applications. As a photographer though, I feel that it delivers the best image quality out of the three phones we tested.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max comes up second with the best video quality and most convincing portraits. I love the images, and although Apple shields its more casual users from any scary manual controls, third-party apps can be used to unlock advanced photo control if desired.
Now the S24 Ultra may have scored last but it has the most second-place finishes owing to its versatile nature. It can handle almost anything well and might be the easiest choice for many users. I also appreciate the full-featured camera interface although some owners might find it a little intimidating.
It’s worth noting that both the Google and Samsung phones have additional AI editing tools that even utilize cloud-based servers to do the heavy lifting. I have to say though, that as important and exciting as the new technology is, the results are disappointing. As the databases get more complex we should see some real performance gains which will add weight to future evaluations, but as it stands now, I would personally use them only sparingly.
Ultimately, most users will stay in the Apple ecosystem if they already are, but Android users have more freedom to dabble in different brands. We hope we’ve shed some light on which phone might be best for you.
BIG COLOR Takes Each Pantone Color of the Year for a Gradient Spin
Every December, we look forward to Pantone’s ongoing Color of the Year (COTY) announcement, an initiative dating back to 2000. Each hue decided upon considers various global factors and is meant to encompass what the overall feeling of the coming year may be.

The prints take into consideration the power of color, how we associate with it, and the influence that takes place within the world of color itself – in an effort to portray endless possibilities.
Nettleton’s COTY print series begins with 2000’s Cerulean and ends with 2024’s Peach Fuzz. The edition number of each print correlates to the release year. For example, 2000 is edition one, since it marks the first color of the year, 2001 is edition two, and so on.
