Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963–64: Eyes of the Storm

As The Beatles captured the hearts of millions, founding member Paul McCartney captured it all on his Pentax camera. Traveling from the UK to New York—just as “the boys” did six decades ago—Eyes of the Storm takes us inside the frenzy of Beatlemania in 1963–64, when the band’s first U.S. tour skyrocketed them to superstardom. More than 250 of McCartney’s photos, recently rediscovered in his archives, reveal his singular vantage point at the center of this whirlwind of attention and adoration. Many of the prints buzz with the electricity of 1960s New York City, which has had a love affair with The Beatles ever since.

Displayed alongside video clips and archival material, the photographs not only showcase McCartney’s artistic versatility but also serve as a personal and historical record. They convey the intensity of The Beatles’ touring schedule, as the Fab Four were swept from concerts to hotels to the road with rabid fans and paparazzi at their heels. The images also evoke an affectionate family album, picturing McCartney and bandmates John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr at a time when their lives were changing irrevocably. See through the “eyes of the storm,” as McCartney describes his unique perspective on this extraordinary period, and relive a musical legend’s meteoric rise.

New keynote speaker for RootsTech 2024: Photographer Nancy Borowick

New keynote speaker for RootsTech 2024: Photographer Nancy Borowick

Renowned photographer Nancy Borowick will be a keynote speaker at RootsTech 2024 on March 1, FamilySearch announced Thursday, Jan. 25. She is sponsored by Pictureline, a Salt Lake City-based camera store.

Borowick joins a lineup that includes fellow keynote speakers Lynne M. Jackson, a descendent of Dred and Harriet Scott, and comedian Henry Cho. RootsTech is a three-day global family history conference scheduled for Feb. 29-March 2 in Salt Lake City and virtually at RootsTech.org.

Borowick graduated from the International Center of Photography, and her work has been exhibited in more than 100 cities worldwide. It’s also been featured in National Geographic, Time Magazine, Bloomberg, Le Monde and the Wall Street Journal. Her awards include Pictures of the Year International and the 2018 Humanitarian Award from Women That Soar.

“Nancy’s photos are known for their acute, beautiful details that reveal the stories of the moments and people being photographed,” FamilySearch wrote in its announcement. “A well-traveled public speaker, her own personal story is one of documenting precious relationships despite devastating trials.”

Borowick’s father was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 — while her mother was already battling the disease. The life-altering news compelled Borowick to document all the time she had left with her parents, who passed away only a year apart from each other, FamilySearch wrote in a news release.

In their honor, Borowick created a special photo tribute to them, “The Family Imprint: A Daughter’s Portrait of Love and Loss.”

She now speaks to over 50 audiences a year, including at hospitals and oncology units.

“She has a gift for telling intimate, personal stories of people and places around the world,” FamilySearch wrote in its announcement, adding that, “Nancy’s work is human, real, authentic and powerful, and those that have viewed her parents’ journey with her have felt as much.”
