Artist and designer Bo Zhang founded Desz Office creative studio, which mixes art, design, material, and communication, in 2019. To him, it’s important the work is a balance of art and design that expresses the relationship between people and space while stimulating the imagination with contemporary art and design. He believes the work should have a soul that can interact both visually and spiritually for people, granting them inspiration and yearning through sentimentality.

For Bo, there were two stages that led him to the world of design. While considering a possible career road map, he really couldn’t distinguish the difference between product design, industrial design, and furniture design. He eventually chose to study product design in Italy for its clear definition – being that every product has form, function, and the charm of art. Bo gradually fell in love with home objects that are common, but full of artistic sense.

After graduating in Industrial Design at Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan, Italy, and Savannah College of Art and Design in the United States, where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts, Bo worked for a year at Sebastian Errazuriz’ studio in Brooklyn. The studio’s philosophy blurs the lines between art and design, and is full of interaction and reflection. This is the kind of thinking that can give the public a new understanding of themselves and society, giving the young designer the realization that design has more meaning than previously believed.

Bo also spends time promoting traditional Asian and Chinese handicrafts that are being slowly forgotten after thousands of years in existence in the age of technology. He works with foundations and fashion brands to promote these skills with modern design to bring new artworks to market. While preserving the culture and skills are important, the profits undeniably improve the lives of poor artisans. Having already exhibited and promoted in China, the UK, and France, next year a new theme with be shown and sold in New York and Milan.

Design is still defined in broad strokes for Bo. When younger, he studied calligraphy because he had poor handwriting, and keeps up with the practice for half an hour every week or two. He appreciates that it exercises patience, and thinks he may one day venture into becoming a calligraphy artist – every piece is art. During college, Bo became obsessed with woodworking, especially traditional wood processing technology. Furniture design is another area he can see himself experimenting in more seriously in the future. The world is his design oyster.

1. Home Fragrance

I used to work as a product manager for a home fragrance brand, and since then I’ve been very interested in home fragrances. I have developed several fragrances, such as bamboo’s taste and humulus’ taste. They are so different and memorable. Fragrance products are one of the few products that require people to use vision, smell, touch, and other feelings to understand. It is interesting to watch each individual choose their favorite fragrance, and most of the choices come from their spiritual and inner thoughts. Like the public understanding of art and design.

2. City Walk + HUTONG

Beijing is a diverse city, with both historical sites and modern architecture. I really enjoy walking between them. There, the old streets are called “hutong.” A small shop or an old building in the HUTONG conveys the nature and quiet that people really want in modern cities. There is also a lot of history and culture to be found in the HUTONG, people will think about the past and the future.

3. Street Workout

It’s an interesting sport training. Different from traditional fitness. Street workout doesn’t require a gym or other professional equipment, people can train at any venue. The reason why I like street workout is that the whole training is a process of constantly challenging yourself, and every skill which you train for can be very cool to show. When you train, you become the center of attention. For example, Muscle-up, Human Flag, Front lever.

Tokujin Yoshioka’s O Watch for Issey Miyake. The designs of this Japanese designer are excellent. My wife knew nothing about design at first, however, when she saw the photos of the O watch she liked the natural, exquisite, fashionable, and aesthetic design very much. That year, I gave her the O watch as her birthday gift. The watch led her to become fascinated with design and art. As a photographer, she often helps me to shoot his new works – sometimes I think that the O watch is a key.

5. Antique Market

I really enjoy visiting antique markets. They are full of old things that have a sense of time, but can give me new ideas. Some of the old objects bring back wonderful memories (such as those from my childhood) and some are antiques that reflect tradition and culture (many of them are hundreds of years old). Listening to the owner introduce the history of the object is also a good opportunity to learn about the culture.

Brilliant Self The project uses mirrors to reveal the patterned reverse side of the metal plate. Many mirrors and white metal plates coated in pigment behind yet plates reveal several colors at once. They were blended and mixed with one another like gas or fluids. The mirrored background lends an energy and brightness to these color tones. Photo: Yang Zhang

Lightness The Lightness collection is inspired by an accidental scene. When light is projected into the space which is layered, the imagination begins. The vases feature gradations of colors that optically change depending on the light hitting them, as if the colors are floating. Photo: Yang Zhang

Stretch Color Stretch Color is a set of local disappearing vases. The three-sizes of vases show the strength and change of the color after being stretched. Through the shape of the curve and the gradient of the color, the vases display a sense of visual stretch. The disappearance part has made the work a fantasy uncertainty. Photo: Yang Zhang

Moon Lamp In general, paper is made by passing fine screens through a bath of plant pulp and water to collect the pulp, then by drying the screens and peeling off the new paper sheets. Rather than pasting sheets of paper together to create forms, Zhang tried to improve the process to create beautiful, seamless, frameless forms. He made the paper lamp surface and created the irregular shadows that bring out the special characteristics of paper. Photo: Bo Zhang

Mono no aware is a feeling universally experienced, yet difficult to describe – a Japanese concept encapsulating the poignant feelings that arise around the ephemeral nature of a certain moment. It’s a concept perfectly applicable to the nature of travel itself, where we venture elsewhere to “live,” yet are always tied to the bittersweet realization we must eventually return. That literal case of emotional baggage was the inspiration behind the name of the travel brand, Monos.

Lest you believe Monos takes itself too seriously, note the Canadian brand is defined much more by a sense of refined simplicity than any degree of traveler’s melancholy. Just take a look at their colorful and tempting cupcake-inspired palette created in the Monos x Magnolia Bakery collaboration with renown NYC Magnolia Bakery, and its clear the company is every bit into the whimsical as they are serious about designing luggage kitted out with the best in functionality.

Half of their hard shell luggage options are also available in this stylish limited edition Terrazzo, a design that would undoubtedly reduce the chances of a enacting a Mentos commercial while reaching for the same luggage at the same time as a stranger at the airport (other limited edition finishes include Terracotta, Sage Green, glossy Purple Icing and Banana Pudding).

Specs for Monos’ carry-on and check-in bags read par for the course for anyone already traveling with other hard case designs from the likes of AWAY or MUJI in tow. Contents are protected by aerospace-grade, water-resistant polycarbonate hard shells, and you can rush to the gate rolling on 360° spinner wheels.

The interior of each case is adorned with an anti-microbial lining made from 100% recycled polyester (now just make these with a bedbug-proof coating, please) embellished with ultra-microfiber vegan leather detailing, TSA-approved combination lock, dual Y-shaped compression straps and dividers to really pack it in, YKK reverse coil zippers, and an adjustable telescopic handle with 4 height settings. Let’s just be blunt, the webcam built into your laptop is mediocre at best and unflattering at worst. Many creative professionals still WFH at least part of the time, and video-based meetings and impromptu FaceTime/Zoom/Teams sessions aren’t going anywhere. Yet, there’s a dearth of webcams designed specifically for those of us working on-the-go from our laptops, making the Opal Tadpole webcam a notable new option.

Maybe you already recognize the name Opal, an imaging company that made waves two years ago with the launch of their 4K C1 webcam. The C1 arrived at a moment when many remote workers were seeking an upgrade to their WFH setups, noting murky and low resolution video made for poor remote collaboration. The new Tadpole follows suit with an ultra-portable 1.2” squared webcam optimized for laptops, weighing the same as two AA batteries ensuring its weight doesn’t tip over the screen or fall off.

Like the C1 webcam designed for full size desktop monitors, the Tadpole’s industrial design is its most conspicuous upgrade from competitive webcams. The minimalist design comes equipped with a clip that fits directly onto any laptop display without requiring a camera mount and is further embellished with a woven nylon cable with USB-C 2.0 that connects with equal ease whether used with a Mac or Windows PC.

Resolution wise, Opal claims the Tadpole’s 4K Sony IMX582 sensor paired with a f1.8 six-element glass lens all bolstered by machine learning results in DSLR-quality video. But perhaps equally, if not more, innovative is the inclusion of the brand’s directional VisiMic microphone. Using a combination of software and hardware, the mic limits audio to whatever the Tadpole’s camera can see, effectively eliminating background noise. Out of the picture, out the scope of its mics.

Due to its small size, rather than a dedicated button, the Tadpole includes a Tap to Mute capacitive touch sensor built directly into the camera’s USB-C plug, making it easy to pause audio when you’re not on the Zoom podium to speak.

Autentico. Design made in Puglia marks the first significant introduction of Pugliese design and production to the American market with an immersive exhibition showcasing handcrafted furnishings, materials, and objects from 11 exemplary regional brands. Exhibitors include Affreschi & Affreschi, AMURA LAB, BIANCO CAVE by FATO STONE, Centrino Style, Dimarmo, Marra Pavimenti, MITOHOME, Officine Tamborrino, Pimar Italian Limestone Specialist, R.D.D. Italia, and Trame di Pietra, with artwork by rising Pugliese photographer Piero Percoco in correspondence with each booth.

Archiproducts – an online portal and community for inspiration or sourcing of all things architecture, product, and design – is one of many key players facilitating this endeavor. “The Puglia region has always been a place of natural excellence, which has grown thanks to its unique geographical position between Europe and the Mediterranean,” say Enzo Maiorano and Rossella Arena – Co-founder of Archiproducts and Art director of Autentico, and account manager of Archiproducts and event manager for Autentico, respectively. “Over time, new know-how, skills, and technologies have mixed with Puglia’s traditions, leading to advanced research and experimentation. This Apulian craftsmanship is enriched with new values, bringing materials such as stone, fabrics, metal, and ceramics to increasingly appreciated levels of quality and excellence worldwide.” The Manhattan show – on view to the public until November 17 – proves that the most forward thinking design solutions are those steeped in heritage, history, and tradition. Below are seven selections from Autentico that champion contemporary Pugliese design.

Dimarmo’s Onda sculptural chaise longue

It’s never “just marble” to an Italian, and for Dimarmo it’s the Onda sculptural chaise pool lounge. The luxurious furnishing is fashioned with a thin marble veneer offering lightness without compromising on aesthetic – subverting all expectations of the stone’s performance and sparking great joy as it floats by. The elegant shape complements a variety of placements in indoor and outdoor spaces alike.

Bianco Cave by Fato Stone Exhibit

With decades of expertise in extraction and manufacturing, Bianco Cave knows how to take advantage of the wide range of chromatic tones and material quality offered by Lecce limestone. The large vases delight with geometric shapes and tell the story of compositional simplicity and the connection with its physical place of origin.

MITOHOME Exhibit

MITOHOME’s Stone modular sofa

The Stone Modular Sofa in contrasting textiles illustrates one of the many customizations for this contemporary sofa. MITOHOME executes its designs with solid wood construction and seams stitched with the care of hand-tailoring. Each product combines traditional craft with production efficiency.

Marra Pavimenti retells traditional visual narratives with contemporary language in their variety of cement paste multilayered tiles. The work of the Marra Brothers includes artisans that formulate an amalgam of water with elements such as white cement, fine marble chips, and color pigments to execute their flat patterns.

Pimar’s historical tradition and experience with Lecce limestone dates back roughly 150 years with longstanding commitments to sustainability and investments in renewable energy. The geometric coffee table designs oft borrow elements from architecture and introduce them at a human scale with a dialogue between materials like brass and stone.

Officine Tamborrino designs and manufactures metal furniture for residential, office, and community spaces alike. The modern Grace Console comes in a wide variety of finishes to accommodate aesthetic tastes as well as modifications like doors that cater to those clients who may require an additional level of utility.

R.D.D. Italia Exhibit

The Ariu pouf by R.D.D. Italia

Spherical, whimsical, and highly technical, the Ariu Pouf is the result of craftsmanship and advanced technological solutions as the designers use a multidisciplinary approach to realize their furniture. This particular piece, which can be reconfigured at the user’s behest, is as reminiscent of atomic structure as it is the decorative stone elements that adorn traditional Italian architecture.

With professional degrees in architecture and journalism, Joseph has a desire to make living beautifully accessible. His work seeks to enrich the lives of others with visual communication and storytelling through design. A regular contributor to titles under the SANDOW Design Group, including Luxe and Metropolis, Joseph serves the Design Milk team as their Managing Editor. In the heart of Melbourne’s inner north, an 1800s Victorian house has undergone a transformation by FMD Architects. The architects, who took inspiration from the historic Edinburgh Gardens the home overlooks, embraced sentimentality and sustainability when it came time to design the new addition. The double-story, north-facing Tiara House goes beyond mere functionality, embracing amenity and livability as its core ethos.

Falling into the category of house mullet (when the front and back facades don’t match), Tiara House’s ornamental frontage keeps its Victorian roots, but has been updated with a neutral palette. The original iron lacework, corbels, and decorative plaster are preserved, creating a contrast to the home’s new modern addition in the back.

The original front interior features shades of blue, along with a wide arched hallway, a formal front room, and an original wood staircase that have been carefully preserved.

The challenge of a southern orientation led FMD Architects to establish connections to the landscape from every angle. The new addition, replacing the 70s lean-to, boasts lofty, light-filled spaces adorned with fluted wood linings, white rendered brick, and bespoke concrete aggregate floors. The kitchen and living areas are bathed in natural light from an eastern lightwell, while the rear garden unfolds to the west, providing a framed view of the landscape.

The rear elevation is graced with a floating screen of vertical wood slats on the upper level, forming a tiara-like structure that provides privacy from the neighboring homes. This embellishment adds a new type of adornment to the typical blank Victorian facades seen near the Tiara House.

A second bedroom has been transformed into a shared bathroom, featuring curved forms, ink blue tiles, speckled terrazzo, granite, and reeded glass, resulting in a moody feel.

Just off the new upstairs bedroom, is a landscaped deck hidden behind the tiara-like screen. The bedroom boasts a calm palette of soft blues and whites, while the ensuite bathroom goes bolder with chartreuse and green veined stone. The original bedrooms have been restored with the wood floors stripped and lime washed.

It’s the little things – like the perfect candleholder – that can really give a space personality and bring it to life. Homeware brand Eldvarm recently introduced their latest collection of just that, created by Louise Varre, founder and CEO of Eldvarm, in collaboration with French-Lebanese designer Charles Kalpakian. The three candleholder designs are LouLou, Luca, and Luna, each inspired by humanity’s primal ties to fire and our relationship with the environment.

Varre shared, “I believe that we all share a collective memory of the flame’s importance and that this sparks something deep within us.”

While lighting a campfire isn’t always possible, burning a candle often is. Each candleholder within the trio is different in design, but harmonious when displayed together. The palette of saturated color options only add a playful touch that doesn’t go unnoticed.

Whimsical ripples hint at retro nostalgia in LouLou’s childlike form. “LouLou is the perfect blend of sensuality and design. When someone looks at nature, they either see circles or lines. LouLou reflects the circles, a feminine feel of the world,” said Kalpakian. Choose from brass, stainless steel with brass insert, or powder coated steel with brass insert.

Luca brings to mind classic pillars of the past, with a slightly unexpected and joyful twist in alignment. Kalpakian shared, “I drew inspiration from various eras of art and architecture. The geometric lines are influenced by the stability of columns, while the intentional shift between the two blocks breaks the rigidity of the shape, resulting in a delightfully dynamic design.” Choose from brass, stainless steel with brass insert, or powder coated steel with brass insert.

Choosing suggestions for my own gift guide feels a bit torn from “these are a few of my favorite things”! I own a few of these items already – like the sheets and perfume – and have others on my own wish list this holiday season. The mini backpack has already held up to traveling, and I hope to add those fingerless gloves to my winter wardrobe soon. Overall, I think the running theme is Creative Creature Comforts!

I’ve been using this AI-powered indoor garden since spring – it’s a fully-automated vertical growing system that can grow up to 30 plants year-round. You can harvest fresh produce just about every day with a setup that only takes up 2 sq. ft. of space. Full-spectrum LED lights help to accelerate growth, while a 5+ gallon tank ensures minimal care on your part. You can even monitor your burgeoning garden with multiple cameras and sensors 24/7! It’s referred to as a “mini” backpack, but it’s the perfect full size for me. Ideally minimal in design, it features a roll-top closure with a hook and loop fastener as well as an interior zipper. The bag is constructed from PUrTEX∞, a custom-made, ultra-durable tech material that Ucon Acrobatics developed. Created with the circular economy in mind, it’s made from recycled fashion textile waste and finished with a rigid coating of solvent-free polyurethane that provides incredible scratch-resistance. You’ll also find pockets throughout (two on the exterior sides and one on the front that uses a water-repellent zipper), two mesh pockets, and an elastic bottle holder and keychain inside. Just the right size for your laptop, the reinforced back padding, bottom, and straps add safety and stability for your precious contents.

I can fully admit that I’m a bedding snob, and ettitude’s sustainable CleanBamboo® Signature Sateen Sheet Set checks all the boxes. Made from silky-soft bamboo lyocell fabric with zero harmful chemicals or plastics, the hypoallergenic set is breathable and really does adjust for temperature. And, importantly, the pockets are deep so that you won’t find yourself fighting the mattress every time you change the sheets. These sheets are so soft, and you’ll find they only get better with time and more trips through the wash. I’m a big fan of this Saffron hue for a pop of color in my otherwise neutral bedroom, but there are lots of good ones to choose from.

Cake is one of my favorite things, so the idea of whipping up a fake one is very appealing. Though I love to bake, I’ve never decorated anything with fancy icing, making this faux cake kit a fun experiment to take advantage of before (hopefully) fooling some visitors with it on display. Inside the box you’ll find 4 x 4 x 2-inch foam cake base, 4 oz spackling, wooden knife, acrylic paint, star piping tip, two piping bags, five candles, a piping guide, and detailed instructions. If this particular cake design doesn’t catch your attention, there are several more to choose from – maybe collect them all? It should go without saying, but no part of this kit is made for consumption.

Lavender can get a bad rap as a scent associated with old women, but it’s always been one I’m drawn to. If you’re in the former camp, Le Labo’s LAVANDE 31 scent holds the power to change your mind. Bergamot and neroli essential oils add an unexpected freshness, while “ambery, dirty, and musky notes” blended with tonka give this eau de parfum a classic, yet updated, signature. My bottle has firmly earned its place on the dresser.

Each holiday season I like to add a piece of art to my ever-growing collection, it’s become a tradition of sorts. Martha Rich’s ‘Go Bananas’ limited-edition print was originally a painted collage on wood, and it feels a bit like a calling to step out of my comfort zone in the new year. The neon yellow fruit against a cool blue background creates an exciting contrast that pops, while the red block lettering gives you your directive. Bryr is known for their clogs, and one of the latest pairs is an update to the Chonk design – the Tegan bootie. Right on-trend with a platform lug sole and monochrome black look (Hello, late ’90s and early ’00s!!), this pair can be worn with tights and/or thick socks when it’s cold outside and without when it warms up. If only I still owned my long black cargo skirt, my winter go-to outfit would be set in stone. The Tegan booties are made to order and run true to size – two things to keep in mind before you smash Add to Cart.

If you’ve never seen beeswax used to create a work of art, behold this hand-poured cinnamon scented floral candle. Made by hand using 100% beeswax from Chiapas, a woman named Viviana creates each one in her workshop located in a small Mexican town. Trained in candle-making since she was a child, Viviana hand-pours every layer for longer burning times. Her intricately detailed specialty candles are inspired by the absent-minded plucking of petals from a rose, and are available in five styles and an assortment of colors.

As someone with chronically cold hands who lives and works in a 123-year-old house, fingerless gloves are a hot commodity come winter. This 100% cashmere pair from Jenni Kayne are soft and cozy – perfect to wear while typing away on a post just like this one. I love how they look like sweater sleeves when poking out from your coat sleeves. Choose from three colors: Charcoal, Grey, and Stone.
