A guide to finding your photography style: Part five

A guide to finding your photography style: Part five

As photographers and creatives, we often find inspiration in the work of other talented artists. Analyzing and deconstructing the work of our favorite photographers can be an enlightening and educational experience. By studying their techniques, compositions, use of light, and storytelling approaches, we gain valuable insights that can inform and elevate our own photography. And they don’t have to be famous photographers to inspire us either. Let’s explore the benefits of analyzing and deconstructing the work of our favorite photographers to our own photography style.

Choose your favorite photographers

Start by identifying a few photographers whose work resonates with you. These can be renowned professionals, emerging talents, or even photographers within your local community. Start with a genre you really enjoy and then spread your wings and select photographers from different genres and photography styles. This can help you to gain a diverse range of insights and perspectives. Study their portfolios, follow their social media accounts and immerse yourself in their body of work.

Study their composition techniques

Composition plays a vital role in creating visually engaging photographs. Analyze how your favorite photographers use composition to draw the viewer’s eye, create balance, and convey their intended message. Look for patterns in their compositions, such as the Rule of Thirds, leading lines, symmetry or framing. Consider how their choices of perspective and framing contribute to the overall impact of the image.

Analyze their use of light

Light is a fundamental element in photography, and skilled photographers know how to utilize it to their advantage. Pay close attention to how your favorite photographers manipulate light in their images. Observe how they use natural light, artificial light, or a combination of both. Study their approach to lighting patterns, shadows, highlights and the overall mood created by their lighting choices.

Understanding their lighting techniques can inspire you to experiment with new ways of capturing and manipulating light in your own work. Do they always use the same lighting or do they play and experiment?

Uncover their storytelling techniques

Photography has the power to tell stories and evoke emotions. Analyze how your favorite photographers craft narratives within their images. Look for elements that convey a sense of narrative, such as the inclusion of human subjects, visual clues or juxtapositions.

Consider the emotions evoked by their images and how they achieve that through the subject matter, composition, or post-processing. By unraveling their storytelling techniques, you can enhance the narrative quality of your own photography.

Study their technical choices

Beyond composition and storytelling, pay attention to the technical aspects of your favorite photographers’ work. Analyze their use of camera settings, lens choices, depth of field and focus. Notice how they handle challenging lighting conditions or achieve a specific mood through post-processing techniques.

Understanding their technical decisions can help you make informed choices in your own photography and elevate your technical proficiency. Reaching out to photographers within your own social circles can be a great benefit.

Experiment with their style

While it is essential to find your own unique style, experimenting with the styles of others can be a valuable learning experience. Try to recreate some of their signature shots or techniques to understand the technical and artistic aspects involved.

Through experimentation, you can gain a deeper understanding of their approach and incorporate elements of their style into your own work. This exploration will ultimately contribute to the development of your personal photographic style.

Reflect on your own work

As you analyze and deconstruct the work of your favorite photographers, take the opportunity to reflect on your own photography. Compare your images to theirs and identify areas for improvement or growth. Consider incorporating the techniques and approaches you’ve learned from studying their work.

Remember, this process is not about copying their style, but instead using their expertise as a source of inspiration and knowledge to enhance your own creative journey.

Look for constructive critique

While this can often be quite difficult for many, asking for construction critique from trusted peers can help you to improve. Likewise entering juried competitions and getting feedback, while sometimes hard to accept, can also help improve your own unique style.

Final thoughts

Analyzing and deconstructing the work of your favorite photographers is a valuable exercise that can significantly contribute to your growth as a photographer. By studying their composition techniques, analyzing their use of light, uncovering their storytelling methods, and understanding their technical choices, you gain insights and inspiration that can elevate your own photography.

Remember to experiment with their style while staying true to your unique vision. Use this exploration as an opportunity to reflect on your work and continue evolving as an artist.

Happy exploring and creating!

While Bryan Adams is best known for his music, he’s also a skilled photographer — and now fans are getting a chance to see his latest work. The rocker will be the subject of a new exhibit, Bryan Adams in Colour, making its world premiere at the Atlas Gallery in Chicago on June 27 and running until August 12.

According to the announcement, the exhibit was inspired by the phrase “seeing things through rose-tinted glasses.” It has him experimenting with multicolored plexiglass to share a new point of view of his catalog of portraits, including those of stars like Mick Jagger and Amy Winehouse.

The gallery notes it “adds even more to the sense of the celebrity appearing to be viewed as if behind a screen, at a distance from the viewer, but somehow also themselves trapped.”

More information on the exhibit can be found at atlasgallery.com.

As for his day job, Adams is currently on his So Happy It Hurts tour, with opener Joan Jett. The trek hits Phoenix, Arizona, on July 25. A complete list of dates can be found at bryanadams.com.

Photography workshop provides a deeper dive for young shutterbugs

Photography workshop provides a deeper dive for young shutterbugs

Russell Huffman (seated) shows the workshop participants different versions of an image, asking them which one they like better and why. From left, standing, are Julee Sullivan, Rose Sullivan, Becca Sullivan, Jason Malone, and Aurelia Mazan-Adkins.
Jay Ann Cox | El Defensor Chieftain photos

Last week, when the young patrons entered the Socorro library’s second floor meeting room, they were greeted by a table full of big cameras and even bigger lenses. The “digital photography workshop” was going to get serious really fast.

Or was it? El Defensor Chieftain photographer and assistant editor Russell Huffman began the workshop by putting an image up on the screen, and asking the participants, “Which of these cameras do you think made that photo?” They hemmed and hawed. Someone pointed to the largest, with battery pack and very long lens.

“Nope. I took that image with this.” And he picked up his iPhone. “You can make fantastic photos with just a cell phone.”

The purpose of the workshop was to familiarize the kids with some of the rules of photography, without getting hung up on the equipment. Using a cell phone meant that most of them had already taken hundreds of photos with Mom or Dad’s phone, or with their own.

Huffman said, “Let’s learn some rules and then you can break them!” He had their attention at that point.

At the Socorro Public Library photography workshop, Aurelia Mazan-Adkins, right, showed no fear in handling the big professional camera to experiment with different angles, lighting and orientation to take shots of instructor Russell Huffman.

After cell phone practice and some rules, second grader Aurelia Mazan-Adkins was thrilled when Huffman invited her to take photos with his large SLR. She was fearless in trying different angles while familiarizing herself with the viewfinder and shutter release. She took Huffman’s advice to take lots of frame seriously, snapping away while the others asked questions.

Teenager Becca Sullivan raised her hand when Huffman showed two similar images and asked the group, “which one do you like better?” Becca said she preferred the one with strong angles because it was “more dynamic.”  This was an opportunity to discuss line and composition.

Even as the workshop was winding down, the participants had many questions, and it was decided that another session would be in order sometime in the fall.

Photography tips

The following “rules” will help a novice take a snapchat and turn it into a keeper.

Shoot a lot of frames

With digital media, there is no need to take just one image. You can always delete all the extras, but it might take you 30 or 50 tries to get one fantastic image.

Rule of Odds

This easy trick for better composition is to tap into the brain’s urge to group things in pairs. If there is an “odd one out,” the human brain will take more time to process the image, making one area more dominant. This trick draws the eye to linger on the image and makes the brain work a little harder.

Rule of Thirds

With “Gridlines Enabled,” the phone photo app will show four lines, two across and two up and down. These lines divide the screen into thirds, or nine squares. A photographer does this in their mind too. The rule is to put the main subject not directly in the middle square. The eye and the brain are more drawn into or around the frame when the subject has been placed along the gridlines.

Try different angles

Pay attention to the lines formed by the subjects in your frame. If there are straight lines across or down, move the camera or your body and see if you can get a more interesting angle to the subject. Attention to line is one of the fundamentals of art.

From a concrete jetty on Dakar’s sun-baked coastline, Senegalese photographer Amy Saar clicked the shutter of her vintage Pentax camera, capturing the light of the horizon on colour film purchased from the country’s only developer. “Dakar looks great with certain coloured films, because they really bring out the warm, vibrant colours,” Saar said, loading a fresh roll into the camera. “Film can be really great in Africa, because in general it’s sunny (and) very colourful.”

Saar is part of a growing resurgence of analogue photography enthusiasts in Senegal, nurtured by Le Sel studio in the capital’s Ouakam neighbourhood. Co-owners Kevin Aubert and Thiibaut Piel co-founded Senegal’s sole studio of its kind two years ago in Aubert’s apartment, with an ambitious goal to reignite the country’s passion for the craft through film sales and workshops.

After decades of dwindling interest, the global market for film cameras and equipment is expected to grow nearly 4% through 2029, according to a study published by Precision Reports in May. Limited access to film and darkroom spaces have hindered African photographers’ ability to participate in film’s global resurgence, despite the craft having played a significant role in the region’s post-colonial artistic history.

Le Sel’s mission is not just to develop film, Aubert said, but to educate photographers about the origins of the medium, and show that understanding the analogue process can enhance their digital expertise. “When they see the image they shot themselves appearing for the first time, it is always a treat.” Aubert said as he led a workshop. “It teaches us a lot about the image, the way to look at it, and the way to manage it.”

Aubert hopes to expand Le Sel into a larger space to house more workshops, exhibits, and even an in-house gallery. In the meantime, local photographers like Eva Diallo are already showing works developed there at some of Dakar’s most prestigious art houses. “The film process is much more conscious than digital or iPhone photos,” Diallo said during her solo exhibition at Dakar’s Gallerie Cecile Fakhoury. “It’s important to be aware during the time it takes, from the moment you take the image … and the moment you have it on paper.” (Writing by Cooper Inveen; Editing by Alison Williams)

Ramie Ahmed on documenting his Black trans and queer chosen family in New York City

Ramie Ahmed on documenting his Black trans and queer chosen family in New York City

If you look, much can be found photographically of queer people in New York City. But is it enough, is it Black enough and who has been holding the camera? These are the questions that New Jersey born and raised Ramie Ahmed is answering within his practice as a “lens-based artist” documenting his Black trans and queer chosen family in the city. “I want to shed a light on the vast community, so that others can be inspired to live authentically”. And with such intention behind his work, he walks around with his camera held high – not by his hip waiting to get a secret shot – so that his subjects can be brought into the moment, looking straight down his lens.

Ramie’s process consists of more than a snap; he seeks to bring every person he documents into a moment of joy and safety. Capturing beauty, protest, couples holding hands, park-bench laughter and club nights, he is creating narratives outside of campaigns within genuine communities. And besides being inspired by Nan Goldin’s similar penchant for documenting the less visible, Ramie is simply driven by his friends. “They keep their heads high, carry themselves with grace despite the world we live in as LGBTQ+ people – and they look good doing it”.

Dior Announces Winner of The ‘Art of Color & Photography and Visual Arts Award’ for Young Talents

“A bit like a storybook character” is how Iris Millot, this year’s winner of the Dior Photography and Visual Arts Award for Young Talents, describes her great-aunt Hélène. In a series of photographs titled “Mont Lion”, Millot examines the overlap between the women’s liberation movement and farming history through an intimate glimpse into the life of Hélène, who has been nurturing the family’s remote farmland in the French Alps for forty years.

Millot’s work, while deeply personal, takes the viewer on a sweeping journey spanning across time and social class, shining light on the remnants of a life lived in the countryside through a mix of portraiture and still-life photography.

Fitting for a student of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie D’Arles (ENSP), Iris Millot’s award-winning series will be displayed along with the work of 12 other finalists in the Grande Halle at the arts center Luma Arles. Among the finalists is Jermine Chua, a student at Central Saint Martins in London, whose video earned an honorable mention from the jury.

Among the jury is the founder and president of Luma Arles, Maja Hoffman, as well as Dior Makeup’s creative and image director Peter Philips, art historian and photographer Damarice Amao, photographer Barbara Iweins, and director of the Parisian Maison Européenne de la Photographie, all overseen by renowned Brazilian fashion photographer Rafael Pavarotti.

Along with the exhibition at Luma Arles, which will be open between July 3rd and September 24th 2023, the House of Dior has awarded Millot a grant and a creative commission.

Cantor Arts Center : Reality Makes Them Dream : American Photography, 1929–1941 – The Eye of Photography Magazine

The Cantor Arts Center presents Reality Makes Them Dream: American Photography, 1929–1941, an exhibition featuring over 100 photographs, periodicals, and photobooks. This material collectively pushes against the typical history of 1930s photography that views the work of this period as primarily documentary, and instead illustrates that artists of this era frequently used photography to ignite the imagination. The exhibition and the expansive art historical narratives it illuminates result from Dr. Josie R. Johnson’s study over the past three years of the Cantor’s Capital Group Foundation (CGF) Photography Collection—a major gift of over 1,000 twentieth-century American photographs.

Currently serving as the museum’s CGF Curatorial Fellow for Photography, Johnson comments: “The Cantor’s holdings of American photography from the 1930s are especially rich, and the generous terms of the Capital Group Foundation Fellowship enabled me to delve deeply into this fascinating chapter of photo history. Sifting through these prints allowed me to set aside what I thought I knew about this material and take a fresh look, giving me a new appreciation for the novel approaches these artists developed in the midst of a profoundly difficult historical moment.”

The work of five photographers from the CGF Collection—Ansel Adams, John Gutmann, Helen Levitt, Wright Morris, and Edward Weston—comprises the core of the exhibition. Its conceit draws from a curious phrase by Stanford biology professor Laurence Bass-Becking about the photography of his friend Edward Weston: “Reality makes him dream.” Though few people today would associate dreaminess with the Great Depression, Bass-Becking penned this statement in the fall of 1930, one year into the economic turmoil that would last until the nation’s entry into World War II. Reality Makes Them Dream exemplifies the spirit of experimentation that Bass-Becking describes by highlighting an undercurrent of artistic practices in the United States that were sometimes more akin to those of Surrealism taking place concurrently in Europe.

To tease out these under-examined connections, and de-emphasize the association of American photography of the 1930s with the unbiased documentation of real people and events, works by the five core CGF artists are interwoven with a diverse selection of photographs by their contemporaries, both iconic and overlooked, such as Walker Evans, Hiromu Kira, and Dorothea Lange. Edward Weston’s bold experimentation with forms both natural and man-made—exemplified by highly evocative works such as Pepper No. 35 (1930) and Egg Slicer (1930) that inspired Bass-Becking’s comment—blends harmoniously with contemporary prints from the community of Japanese-American photographers in Los Angeles that often supported Weston’s work. Examples of fashion and editorial photography, including color images by Toni Frissell and Paul Outerbridge, draw connections across the galleries with photographs of airplanes, household items, and tourist sites made by seasoned artists and amateur hobbyists alike. Helen Levitt’s surreal tableaux on the streets of New York echo Berenice Abbott’s studies of the metropolis with multiple layers of history jumbled into the same block. Ansel Adams’s pristine images of the Sierra Nevada hang alongside little-known photographs by Seema Weatherwax, his darkroom assistant in the late 1930s who was similarly enchanted with nature but developed a vision all her own. Despite gaining the respect of not only Adams, but also Weston, Lange, and Imogen Cunningham, Weatherwax shared her own work publicly for the first time in 2000 at the age of 95. Her photographs evidence her technical abilities and, not unlike her peers on view in this exhibition, find beauty in the everyday. Altogether, these photographs effectively illustrate Johnson’s three year exploration of the collection which revealed that despite the very real financial, political, and cultural challenges of the Great Depression, certain photographers chose not to focus on the camera’s cold mechanical precision, but rather used it as a medium to spark their imaginations—fusing reality and dream into one.

“The Capital Group Foundation Photography Collection is not only a gift to the Cantor and its future programming, but to the education and enrichment of the wider community of Stanford,” said Director Veronica Roberts. “The accompanying funding for the stewardship of the collection and a CGF Fellow ensures that new scholarship will be supported and enables us to foster the next generation of photography scholars and enthusiasts. Josie R. Johnson’s stellar exhibition demonstrates just how much there is to learn from this material and her research has already paved the way for new art historical narratives to take shape.”

The first exhibition curated by a CGF fellow, Reality Makes Them Dream is accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue. It features an essay by Johnson and contributions from the community of photography scholars at Stanford University—Kim Beil, associate director of the ITALIC arts program for undergraduates; Yechen Zhao (PhD in art history ’22); Anna Lee, photography curator for special collections at the Stanford Libraries; Rachel Heise Bolten (PhD in English ’22); Altair Brandon-Salmon (PhD candidate in art history); Marco Antonio Flores (PhD candidate in art history); and Maggie Dethloff, PhD, assistant curator of photography and new media at the Cantor.

‘Seeing history’: Early 1900s Montana photographer’s work rediscovered by granddaughter

BILLINGS — Jessamine Spear Johnson was born in 1886 on the eastern front of the Bighorn Mountains. Her mother began taking photographs as a hobby, and at age 10, Jessamine discovered her own love of the art form.

But Jessamine’s photos were tucked away in boxes for decades—until they were recently brought to light by her granddaughter, Tempe Javitz.

“Jessamine Spear Johnson— I was a Johnson— was my grandmother. My father was her fifth child,” Javitz said. “My grandmother, at about age 10, her mother had started taking photographs with a glass-plate camera. She started helping her mom. Well after Jessamine got married, we find her workbook of all of her expenses. She was letting her husband know where she’d spend money. And in 1908, she bought her first film camera, a Brownie, for $2.”

After around 16 years of sorting thousands of photographs she previously didn’t know existed, Javitz had a plan for how she wanted to share her grandmother’s work.

“I spent years with 34 boxes of (Jessamine’s) photographs I was scanning. I now have over 16,000 images on my computer. Not all of them are in terrific shape,” Javitz said. “Many years later, I’m married, living out in California but I went home every summer. I’m visiting with Annabelle, her oldest child and one of my favorite aunts, and Annabelle gave me 23 of her diaries. And that started the idea that I was going to rescue her.”

Javitz grew up in Montana but now lives in California. She’ll be visiting the Treasure State next month for one special reason.

“The book that I just published with the South Dakota Historical Society Press, it’s called ‘Bighorn Visions: The Photography of Jessamine Spear Johnson’,” Javitz said. “I’ve been invited to the South Dakota Festival of Books at the end of September. I’m going back to Montana and Wyoming in late August, early September, and I have several book signings to go to there.”

In April, Javitz’s book, ‘Bighorn Visions: The Photography of Jessamine Spear Johnson’ hit the shelves, featuring photos from Jessamine.

“Jessamine never went anywhere without her camera…. Because the photos follow that,” Javitz said. “She was capturing, you know, what it was like to live then, what it was like to ranch. There are lots of cattle, sheep, dude ranching photos. But there are also historical photos.”

The photographs serve as a time capsule from the days of the wild, wild west.

“Her legacy is important, and I think it’s important for more people to realize that women through time have been doing important artistic work,” Javitz said.

Johnson was a pioneer in more ways than one, snapping photographs of life across Montana and Wyoming. She lived during a time when women were just starting to enter the workforce and become more independent.

But photographers like her were rare.

“Photography is not as common among these women as we would like to think. And in large part, that’s simply because photography is an expensive hobby,” said Lauren Hunley, a community historian at the Western Heritage Center in Billings. “We don’t have a lot of women, specifically a lot of people in total, looking at photography as an extra hobby. We do have a lot of professional photographers, but it’s different when you’re a professional.”

Hunley says Jessamine’s candid photography paints a picture of what life was actually like back then.

“They documented what they did on a daily basis, what’s happening on their ranch,” Hunley said. “As a historian, those are the photographs that are vitally important to us.”

Photographs that preserve Western history—and are now documented for all to see.

“The photos there are historically, amazingly important. I had no idea how important until I started doing more research,” Javitz said. “One of the things that I think is important about what my grandmother Jessamine photographed is this was happening in her lifetime. Women were joining roundups, women were breaking horses, women were being equal partners in ranching. That all happened within her lifetime and with her own girls. She had a feeling, I’m sure, that she was seeing history happen.”
