The Pulitzer Prize Board has honored the photography staffs of Reuters and the Associated Press for their outstanding work. The Reuters staff was recognized with the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News, while the Associated Press was awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.

Since 1917, the Pulitzer Prize has been handed out to honor exceptional achievements in American “journalism, arts, and letters.” The photography staff at Reuters was recognized for “raw and urgent photographs documenting the October 7th deadly attack in Israel by Hamas and the first weeks of Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza.”

The AP, which has won a total of 59 Pulitzer Prizes, was singled out for “poignant photographs chronicling unprecedented masses of migrants and their arduous journey north from Colombia to the border of the United States.” The 15 photographs were shot by AP staffers Greg Bull, Eric Gay, Fernando Llano, Marco Ugarte, and Eduardo Verdugo, and longtime AP freelancers Christian Chavez, Felix Marquez, and Ivan Valencia.

“These raw and emotional images came about through day-to-day coverage of a historic moment in multiple countries documenting migrants at every step of their treacherous journeys,” shares Julie Pace, the AP’s senior vice president and executive editor.

The winning photos from Reuters include Mohammed Salem’s photo of a Palestinian woman cradling her niece’s body after she was killed in Israeli strikes on Khan Younis. The heartbreaking photo was already named 2024 World Press Photo of the Year. In addition to Salem, the Pulitzer photography team includes staff photographers Ahmed Zakot, Amir Cohen, Ammar Awad, Evelyn Hockstein, Anas al-Shareef, Ibraheem Abu Mustafa and Ronen Zvulun, and freelance journalist Yasser Qudih.

The win was particularly poignant for Reuters, whose staff face grave danger while out on assignment. In October,  Issam Abdullah, a Reuters visuals journalist, was killed by an Israeli tank while filming shelling at the Lebanon-Israel border.

The photography prize was one of two Pulitzers that Reuters took home. It also won the National Reporting Prize for its investigation into serious issues at various companies owned by Elon Musk. Reuters uncovered worker injuries, animal mistreatment, and a coverup of serious defects in Teslas, which sparked investigations in the United States and Europe.

Reuters President Paul Bascobert says, “Our winning work exemplifies why journalism is so vital to informing the public and holding power to account.”

The Reuters and Associated Press photography staff were singled out for exceptional work and won 2024 Pulitzer Prizes.

Adam Rouhana’s affecting portraits of Palestinian life

Adam Rouhana’s affecting portraits of Palestinian life
image

For any photographer, their debut solo show is a rite of passage, a breakthrough moment. Though not every photographer opens a show that bears such a weight to the context within which it opens. Adam Rouhana’s Before Freedom, shot over several years in his ancestral homeland and across historic Palestine, is currently showing at Frieze No.9 Cork Street and is the first time the work has been lifted from its digital home where it first found popularity and high acclaim.

The work acts as “a counter-narrative to the images we have been consuming on a daily basis for the past seven months of genocide, and perhaps longer”, Boston-born Rouahana tells Dazed. “Yes, we Palestinians are being slaughtered and occupied, and are actively resisting that, but that’s not the entirety of our existence, as those images would suggest.”

Rouhana has managed to populate our Instagram feeds with delicate images of harmonious Palestinian life whilst including clues of the occupation within his frame. By simply capturing what he saw, as opposed to forcing a pre-existing narrative, or fashioning a fictitious alternative, the early-career photographer also caught the eyes of curator and writer Amah-Rose Abrams. I immediately connected with the work as do so many people who have discovered it and follow him online,” she explains.

Abrams, who began her work with Rouhana after their meeting at the 15th Sharjah Biennial, explains that the exhibition is “just one narrative strand” from the huge and on-going Before Freedom series. The exhibition displays Rouhana’s most iconic (a less crude way of saying ‘viral’) images alongside less recognisable photographs. The scene painted by Abrams’ curation along the walls of the first floor of the Frieze gallery is one of quiet resilience, hope in the mundane, and sensory delights.

“To show my photos of Palestine now, is to say: we are here, in Palestine – and we’re not going anywhere” – Adam Rouhana

The first image upon entry, one of children playing in water, immediately elicits calm, innocence and childlike wonder whilst almost manifesting the sounds of splashing water so reminiscent of childhood summers. In this way, both Abrams and Rouhana show us that our experiences in life are universal, a thread which is carried throughout the exhibition. One of the only things unique about Palestinian life is the external forces which wish to suppress it. “The history, language, and religious plurality of Palestine have materialised over millenia congealing into a thick social fabric that is textured with long-standing traditions, knowledge and social-relations that Israel has not been successful in erasing,” says Rouhana. “To show my photos of Palestine now, is to say: we are here, in Palestine – and we’re not going anywhere. Palestinian life trumps Zionism’s attempt at Palestinian death.”

Another image, one of the last displayed in the sequence, shows an Arabian horse in an extended and strained lunging motion, illuminated and almost glowing with the flash of Rouhana’s camera. His body is contorted by the effort of trying to break away, his eyes are wild and and his nostrils are flared. The image is staggeringly large-scale, taking up almost the entire wall. The young stallion is nearly life-size and he is almost jumping from the wall towards us, accentuated by one of his hooves hovering over the bottom border of the image. He is refusing to be restricted by either his reigns or the frame which contains the composition. And so, instead of being a sorrow symbol of confinement, the horse could easily be a radically hopeful allegory for the precise moment before the chains are broken; before freedom.

Abrams thinks the larger scale of the images relay “the beauty of film photography”. “A Lion’s Watermelon” (2022), which is perhaps Rouhana’s most well-known image, shows a young Assad indulging in a watermelon – the universal symbol of Palestinian resistance. Abrams tells me that the image was always intended to be almost life-sized, “as though the viewer was meeting him”. Because these ‘meetings’ are repeated throughout the show, the overall feeling is one of intimacy, harking back to Rouhana’s universal and timeless lens. “It was important to take the work, which is shot on film, out of the online context and place it firmly in a physical art context,” says Abrams, since his images have thus far only been seen and shared repeatedly in the digital world.

Though Before Freedom opens against the backdrop of the continued genocide in Gaza, the work extends far beyond the zeitgeist. It is a testament to the 75-year ongoing resilience of the Palestinian spirit against land theft, colonial brutality and cultural erasure. “Palestine was, […] before Israel’s occupation, an open-border, culturally-pluralist, religiously diverse, fertile homeland – our homeland,” Rouhana reminds us. With the world’s eyes on Palestine, it should be no surprise that Rouhana’s work has struck the hearts of so many and attracted high-profile visitors such as Hans Ulrich Obrist. The show also evidences the photographer’s growing narrative vision. Thus, we might want to echo Abrams when she says,I think [Rouhana] will continue to go from strength to strength as an artist and I look forward to seeing him do so.”

Before Freedom: Adam Rouhana is showing at Frieze No. 9 Cork Street until May 18, 2024. Rouhana’s upcoming show Before Freedom Pt. 2, curated by Lobna Sana, will open at TJ Boulting on May 30 and run till June 22 with unseen work from the artist’s ongoing series.

A guide to Photo London 2024

A guide to Photo London 2024

From the dark eroticism of Sakiko Nomura to the psychedelic experiments of Jean-Vincent Simonet, here’s our guide to navigating this year’s Photo London

14May 2024

Photo maniacs, rejoice! The UK’s biggest photography extravaganza, aka Photo London, opens this week. Over 100 galleries from 44 cities are competing for attention throughout the spectacular grounds of Somerset House, bringing together a wildly entertaining mix of classic and contemporary. Here, we spotlight the fun of the fair.

This edition’s ta-da moment comes courtesy of Valérie Belin, who has been honoured as the Master of Photography. Throughout the embankment gallery’s halls, the French artist’s grand, Baroque and frankly showstopping works feature subjects ranging from jacked bodybuilders to imaginary pop stars. Belin’s art plays clever games, employing technology and experimentation to subvert the premise that photography can be trusted as a source of truth. And as social media continues to transform the ways we consume celebrity culture, the idea that images are rarely what they say on the tin feels as vital ever. Belin uses photography as a metaphor, revealing not substance but absence, and thus “silent stories”.

Make a beeline to the booth of Galerie Écho 119, where Sakiko Nomura’s sexy and sumptuous solarisations ought to be worshipped. The former apprentice to Noboyushi Araki clearly revelled in the magical possibilities of solarisation, as too did Man Ray, who accidentally discovered this photographic technique by switching on the light in his darkroom. As black as can be, Nomura’s renderings of bodies, flowers and skylines are erotic in the way they tease and disclose their secrets over time. The luminous halo effects will leave you with a train of spiritual reverberations.

Meanwhile, over at Messums, the electric experiments of Jean-Vincent Simonet are, as expected, audacious in the extreme. Awash with dripping waves of multicolour, these brand-new unique works deconstruct florals in such a way that they become odd and alien. They possess a psychedelic quality that is firmly rooted in painterly traditions while reflecting the garishness of contemporary life in the era of the ink-jet printer.

How to save the world? Answers come unexpectedly at Erika Deák Gallery in the Discovery section, where Andi Gáldi Vinkó is presenting the heartbreakingly-titled, guilt-ridden If You Knew It, Why Didn’t You Do Something About It? Through a miscellany of seashell sculptures, paper collages, crayon-scribbled pictures and a blazing neon sun, the artist tells the story of a mother-daughter relationship in times of climate emergency. It’s surprising, thought-provoking and conceived with the perfect twist of cynicism and idealism.

Compiling the faces and places they’ve encountered over the past few years – from Hackney to Australia, Poland, Serbia, the US and beyond – photography duo Lola & Pani’s Bumps offers a fresh and contemporary perspective on youth, nature and memory. These are photographs in which moments – and lives – are never flattened or fixed. They are constantly moving from then to now, kids finding echoes in the world around them.

At the more poignant end of things, MMX Gallery is staging a mini homage to Brian Griffin, the great British photographer who died earlier this year. He was celebrated for his sharp, witty and wildly performative imagery, which – as evidenced here – made for brilliant album covers. Iggy Popp’s Soldier is a blast, as is the magnetic 1979 shot of a man lighting up a sky rocket in the Dungeness desert, a stone’s throw away from the Nuclear Power Station. There’s a sense of conflict wrapped into this silhouetted figure, for whom the exhilarating and terrifying powers of transformation are within reach. We’ll see him on the other side…

Photo London runs at Somerset House from 15–19 May 2024.

All About Photo Magazine (AAP) has released all the winners of their Celebrating Excellence in Photography winners for their #39 competition with the theme of shadows.

There were three major winners, with 23 merit awards recipients, representing 16 countries across five continents.

The top three winners received a prize of $1,000, and all winning photographs will be prominently featured in the All About Photo Winners Gallery, and published in the printed issue of AAP Magazine #39: Shadows.

“In this 39th edition of AAP Magazine, our quest was to explore both the poetry and power of shadows, and the twenty-five selected photographers have eloquently captured these nuances in their work,” says AAP on its website.

The top first place winner is Shinji Ichikawa from Japan, who submitted an image from his series ‘The Old Man With an Umbrella’ (above).

On the AAP website he wrote:

“This work, created in 2020, commemorates the significant milestone of my father’s 80th birthday. It captures him at the intersection of life and death, infused with my own feelings of anxiety and fear as I witness his journey.

“The stark silhouette of my father holding an umbrella against the vibrant red and black backdrop emphasizes the contrast between life’s fragility and its resolute continuation. The umbrella stands as a symbolic haven from life’s uncertainties, serving as a metaphor for protection and support in his path.”

Fabien Dendievel came in second place with a photograph from his series  ‘Monte Amiata Complex’. (Image credit: Fabien Dendievel)

In second place is Fabien Dendiével from France with a photograph from his series ‘Monte Amiata Complex’.

On the AAP website he wrote:

“This series of photos is a short immersion in the Italian building Monte Amiata designed by architects Carlo Aymonino and Aldo Rossi. I had to work fast because I didn’t have much time. I tried to capture the colors and shadows of this incredible building as best I could. I’d love to go back and explore every detail.

“It was summer and the weather was very hot. People were napping. The building was completely empty of people. I love taking this kind of photo, playing with shadows and colors, it’s a never-ending game. To do this series I used two medium-format cameras and a large format 4×5 camera.”

The aptly named collection ‘Hunting Shadows’ by Tommi Viitala, shot in Budapest, Hungary (Image credit: Tommi Viitala)

The third place winner is Tommi Viitala from Finland with a photograph from his series ‘Hunting Shadows’

On the AAP website he wrote:

“This street photography was taken from Budapest, Hungary. It was a really sunny day in February 2023 when I was bypassing this one hallway and noticed really sharp shadows in the walls, when I just waited a couple of minutes, I saw this person going down, and then I got this shot. Street photography at its greatest — surprising moments and shadows that will never happen again.”
