Danville, IL – The VCCD is honored to showcase a collection of work by local photographer Jared Lowe at the Kennekuk Education Center, Kennekuk County Park. An opening reception with his photography will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024, from 1 – 4 pm.

Jared Lowe became fascinated with photography when he discovered Mathew Brady’s photos of the Civil War. Being an outdoor person, Jared was also drawn to National Geographic-themed photos. Inspired by his love of wildlife and the natural landscape, and with encouragement from his grandmother, Jared began his photography journey in 2019.

Using a Nikon DX3200 and his Android phone, Jared specializes in landscape, wildlife, and weather photography. Nostalgic scenes of old barns and buildings, basketball hoops, and abandoned places are also evident in Jared’s collection. His goal is to showcase natural beauty with the hope that our busy society will stop to remember the simple things.

A collection of Jared Lowe’s photography is now on display at the Kennekuk Education Center, Kennekuk County Park. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, April 21, 2024 from 1 – 4 pm. His work will remain at the Education Center for viewing by appointment for the next several months.

Kim Kardashian recently shared new Instagram photos showcasing her 10-year-old daughter, North West’s, budding photography skills. 

North, whom Kim has affectionately dubbed the “Stylist of the Year,” took the stunning photos of her mother during the recent Kardashian-Jenner family trip.

The carousel of images features Kim in a shimmering gold Prada dress with her hair pulled back into a sleek bun. Kim captioned the post, “✨ 📸 North,” highlighting her daughter’s creative talents behind the camera.

North has been recognized for her artistic inclinations, including her impressive painting skills. In September, Kim shared a photo of North’s beautiful sunset painting on her Instagram Story. 

The vibrant artwork showcased a glowing orange-and-yellow sun with pink-and-purple clouds reflecting on the ocean, demonstrating North’s keen eye for color and detail. Kim has been protective of her daughter’s achievements, especially when North’s previous paintings were met with skepticism.

That wasn’t North’s first impressive landscape piece. Back in 2021, Kim shared a photo of North’s painting at age seven, which featured a snow-covered mountain on a lake.

After it was questioned as to whether North actually painted the image or if she used a paint by numbers program, Kim hopped onto Instagram once again to shut down the speculation. 

Sharing that North had been taking an oil painting class, the reality star added, “How dare you see children doing awesome things and then try to accuse them of NOT being awesome!?!?! Please stop embarrassing yourselves with the negativity and allow every child to be GREAT!!! NORTH WEST PAINTED THAT PERDIOTDDDDDABCDEFGZFDT!!!!!”

When we visited the Accsoon booth in NAB 2024, we saw their latest addition to their CineView lineuphe -the Accsoon CineView 2 SDI wireless video system. The system can transmit 1080P 60fps video up to 450 meters away from the camera while keeping latency under 50. It’s also a dual-band transmission system, meaning it can use 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time.

The system uses a new antenna design, which lets it surpass the range of its predecessors, the CineView SE and HE, by about 100 meters. In other words, you can use the CineView 2 SDI to see a camera’s feed up to 450 meters away. What is nice is that you can connect the CineView 2 transmitter to up to four devices, be it CineView receivers or smartphones, with the Accsoon app. This, combined with the massive range, can allow a team to monitor production, even in massive outdoor sets, with ease.

The CineVIew 2 SDI is designed to be almost unnoticeable. It emits no fan noise, and it weighs only 200 grams. You can set up your camera however you like, and it won’t get in your way. Just try not to block its antennas or full-color control monitor with other gear in your rig.

Price and availability

The Accsoon CineView 2 SDI is not available yet, although it’s currently on display at NAB in Las Vegas. It will be released during Q2 2024, and the Tx/Rx set will cost $649. No pre-orders have opened up yet, but we’ll probably start seeing them soon.

10 Years Ago, Google Started a Smartphone Photography Revolution With an App You Can’t Install Today

Take your pick of any flagship phone — iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, hell, even OnePlus or Xiaomi — and it will have a great camera. Not just one great camera, but a system of lenses (on the back and front) capable of taking excellent ultra-wide shots, portrait-style photos of people and pets, macro close-ups, zoomed-in pics, incredible night images, and steady and stabilized high-resolution videos.

But smartphones didn’t always have such versatile cameras.

Smartphone photography and videography in the early days of the iPhone and, especially Android phones, were pretty rough. Phone cameras took low-res photos, couldn’t shoot in the dark, and it was still better to carry a point-and-shoot or DSLR for videos that didn’t look like potato quality.

Very quickly, however, the iPhone’s camera pulled ahead of every other smartphone, as social media apps encouraged everyone to capture more, and all the time. By 2009, two years after the iPhone launched, its camera rocketed to become the most popular camera on Flickr, blowing past popular Canon and Nikon DSLRs of the time. The iPhone’s closed platform (made and controlled by Apple, compared to Android’s open source and more diverse array of phones built by dozens of companies) meant each year-over-year model easily built on the previous one. Cameras on Android phones were basically the Wild West — the digital eye felt like it only mattered after displays, processing power, battery life, and design were prioritized.

But that would start to change on April 16, 2014 when Google made the Google Camera app available on the Play Store and inadvertently showed Android phone makers how to make a great camera for their touchscreen slabs.

To Isaac Reynolds, the Group Product Manager for Google’s Pixel Camera, the release of the Google Camera app 10 years ago holds little significance to his work on bringing new camera features to new Pixel phones. Distributing the app was simply a few clicks on a computer. The work of building the best phone camera, one that could go beyond simulating over 50 years worth of sensor capabilities and image processing in traditional single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras, had already begun years earlier under Marc Levoy. The former Distinguished Google Engineer helped pioneer many of the computational photography techniques (the use of software to augment camera sensors and lenses to enable capture capabilities not possible with hardware alone) we see in our phones today when he and his team worked on image fusion for Google Glass and Google Nexus phones.

“I don’t remember [Google Camera] making waves across Android,” Reynolds tells Inverse during a sit-down interview at Google’s main headquarters in Mountain View, California in late March. “It was showing the world through our own phones, our own code, and our launches on our devices, what computational photography could do. We see a lot of meaning in this concept of small cameras, constrained environment, and ‘Let’s use software to make up the difference.’”

From the inside, the Google Camera app might not have meant anything to Reynolds, but for the people who suffered with the lackluster cameras on Android phones, it was a savior of sorts. Installing the Google Camera app allowed Android owners in those days to get not just a prettier-designed app, but photos and video quality that were objectively better than what came installed on their devices.

“It was the first time we saw phone camera sensors were really being held back by software and how this one app could make a phone’s camera better,” says Max Weinbach, a technology analyst at the research firm Creative Strategies. “It was a big deal. For example, Samsung’s camera processing wasn’t great, but with Google Camera’s image fusion HDR+ processing, you could make the camera take better photos than anyone thought it was ever going to be. We never saw Apple talk about computational photography until after Google Cam. We never saw Samsung do it. No one realized until Google did it, but the community saw it.”

Ten years after the release of the Google Camera app in the Play Store, the impact that it had on the whole phone industry continues to be felt with every new smartphone. But computational photography, once a novel feature for phone camera excellence, is now a staple. Have we again reached a point of diminishing returns? Or will artificial intelligence and the shift from camera capture to creation take phone cameras to another level?

To find out, I went deep into Google’s strongly secured Pixel design lab to uncover how the company pushed smartphone photography past its limits, and how it hopes to do it all over again.

The Power of Software

Whether or not the release of the Google Camera app was really the catalyst that nudged Android phone makers to build better camera apps, it’s evident a decade later that the app revolutionized smartphone cameras. It wasn’t until Google bet its own-designed phones (the Nexus and then the Pixel) on computational photography that we saw major leaps in stills and videos.

Reynolds, who started at Google in 2014 and joined the Pixel Camera team in 2015, is a phone, camera, and photography nerd. When we met up in person, he immediately dove into camera geek-speak — a language I’m quite fluent in. “I got into tech, never thinking I would get to work on phones, let alone cameras.” He’s helped lead the design of the Pixel camera since before the original Pixel phone, and now runs a product management team that builds 14 to 15 cameras across the entire Pixel devices lineup (phones, tablets, and Chromebooks).

“We might now at this point be [buying] smart cameras that have phones attached.”

“There was a time when we were buying smartphones that had cameras on them,” Reynolds says. “I’m not sure that’s true anymore. I think by usage and how much time you spend using it, we might now at this point be [buying] smart cameras that have phones attached.”

Watch any keynote or read any press release announcing a new phone, and the cameras are typically the most detailed section. Phone makers tout more resolution (megapixels), larger sensors that can capture more light, additional lenses such as ultra-wides and telephotos (sometimes multiple ones for extra zoom), more advanced optical image stabilization modules, etc. New hardware components can aid in taking better-looking photos and videos by sheer brute force, but that’s not where Reynolds and his team think smartphone cameras should evolve towards. The reason why he loves working on phone cameras is because, at Google, they marry hardware and software techniques to go “beyond physics,” a motto that he borrowed from another Pixel team.

“We’re not trying to build a simulation,” Reynolds says, describing other phone cameras that rely mostly or solely on hardware to produce photos and videos. “If we’re trying to build a simulation, the best way to do that is to stick a piece of hardware in [a phone] because it comes with all of the tradeoffs. We said we don’t want those tradeoffs; we want to build something different; we don’t want to be stuck with the simulation; we want to go beyond the physics. And a lot of those solutions ended up making more sense in [combining] hardware with software.”

He points to portrait mode on Pixel phones as an example of how they’re not building a simulation of a camera lens. Whereas Apple has told me in the past how the bokeh (aka, how shallow the background is blurred) for the iPhone’s portrait mode honors traditional camera lenses by simulating how the blur looks based on equivalent SLR lens focal length, Reynolds confirms to me what everyone has suspected all along: The bokeh for Pixel portrait photos is supposed to look the way it does, like the Gaussian blur effect you can apply to images in an image editor like Photoshop. “It’s not perfect so we built it better. We built it without the limitations of a real lens.” How you feel about that is a matter of preference.

“We’re not trying to build a simulation.”

“Beyond physics means having all these capabilities with none of the weird quirks [of camera hardware alone],” he says, reminding me that a Pixel camera feature like Action Pan is a one-button-press to capture a photo of motion blur effect for a moving object such as a car. “If you’re just focused on the things that were solvable in hardware 50 years ago, you’re not going to build the next innovation. We’re big on research, innovation, and technology, and solving customer problems and being helpful. We want to make things that act like they should, like people want them to, not like people have learned to tolerate [in cameras].”

There’s no debate that Google has left an everlasting mark on mobile cameras and helped advance the documentation of our lives — our memories — forward. The list of phone camera innovations is long. Highlights that have been copied by virtually every phone include HDR+ (a technique that merges multiple images into one shot that correctly exposes the bright and the dark areas), Super Res Zoom (a method for upscaling details in zoomed-in photos in lieu of having a physical telephoto zoom lens), and Night Sight (a ground-breaking mode that made it possible to capture low-light and night photos with visible detail).

“Night Sight was an absolute game-changer and it took folks years to even have an attempt at following it up,” Reynolds says. “I don’t think anyone’s matched the drama — the night to day — and vibrant colors because no one is willing to saturate their colors. You only saturate colors, if you’re confident that your colors are correct. If you ever see a desaturated low-light photo, it’s an intentional choice because [the phone maker] is afraid their colors are wrong. We love the vibrancy because it demonstrates how capable that software package is.”

Google gets credit for popularizing night modes in phones, but it was actually Huawei that was the first to put night mode on a phone with the P20 Pro (before it was crippled by U.S. sanctions for a few years).

“Night Sight was built on Huawei work,” Myriam Joire, a former Engadget technology blogger tells Inverse. “Huawei did not get the first computational stuff, that was Google, but from then on [after Night Sight], they saw what Google was doing and were on it.”

Even the iPhone has leaned more into software to compensate for the compromises of physical lenses and camera sensors. Whereas portrait mode was originally exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus and its dual-rear camera lenses, later iPhones including the iPhone XR and iPhone SE were endowed with portrait mode even with a single lens.

Leveraging software to handle some of the jobs of hardware also has another benefit “Software let Google keep costs down for a while,” says Weinbach, who extensively tests a range of smartphones available globally from budget to mid-range to premium to evaluate their value.

“We wanted to build a phone that was the best smartphone camera, but we knew we could do it at a better value,” Reynolds says. “[With software] we could do things on a $500 to $600 phone that folks couldn’t do on an $800 or $900 phone. That was an amazing achievement and that was because we blended hardware and software and AI. We could offer a ton at that price point.”

Solving Real Camera and Photography Problems

The camera sensors are important and will improve over time, but Reynolds believes a “beyond physics” approach that marries hardware with intelligent software processing is the only way to advance cameras.

If software is the solution to filling in trade-offs that phone cameras have, what kind of camera-related problems do customers need solving? What’s left to improve now that photos and videos have reached an apex in terms of good enough quality for sharing either on social media or in full resolution? Has computational photography plateaued? As smartphones start to fill up with artificial intelligence features — be it generative or background-based machine learning — what is next for phone cameras other than incremental improvements to picture sharpness, dynamic range, low-light photography, and the like? Naturally, as a data-driven company, Google follows the data.

“We let the customers decide. We do an amazing amount of studies to figure out what they want in a camera,” Reynolds says. “I always have a stack rank of global research with a high number of respondents to help us understand what are the problems we’re solving.”

He says features like Magic Eraser, which uses AI to help delete photobombers or background distractions, came out of solving the problem of people sending their pictures to somebody they knew who could Photoshop them out. Rather than people spending time buying tools or watching YouTube videos on how to edit a photo, the Pixel team built those tools into Google phones and made them simpler and faster to figure out.

“Like zoom, low-light, dynamic range, sharpness, blur is one of those foundational issues [that everyone has],” Reynolds says. That’s why his team created Photo Unblur, a feature introduced on the Pixel 7 that can essentially turn a blurry photo that was perhaps the result of shaky hands or the subject moving (like children or animals) and make it sharper. “We want to build amazing technologies to solve problems. You don’t build amazing technologies by thinking incrementally. You have to think bigger and [take] big swings and big misses. You have to get comfortable with that.”

Solving these customer-requested camera pain points goes back to the philosophies of “beyond physics,” and not creating a simulation of a traditional SLR camera is what guides Reynolds and his team.

“If you’re just building an SLR, you’re never going to build Best Take and that’s a tragedy — that’s such a missed opportunity,” Reynolds says, referencing a newer Pixel feature that combines the smiling faces of multiple shots into one perfect photo. “Someone who is just keeping their blinders on would not build the best phone. We’re not really competing with SLRs. We’re competing with an entire workflow.”

AI and the Shift From Camera Capture to Creation

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bit concerned with how phone makers like Google are challenging the very idea of what a photo is. Is a photo a realistic snapshot of time captured by a bunch of camera sensor photosites when the aperture of a lens opens up to let light hit it and then record that data as an image? Or is a photo supposed to represent how you remember that moment?

For example, let’s use Best Take. That final shot of a bunch of faces all perfectly smiling — no closed eyes or glances away from the camera — is how you remember the moment, but it might not have been what actually happened. Are we going down a slippery slope of creating false memories, especially as we get new AI-powered features like Best Take or Magic Editor, which go beyond erasing things with Magic Eraser? Google’s AI editing features straight up let you basically Photoshop an image by doing stuff like replacing the sky, or adding objects, or reframing subjects, or expanding what was actually captured.

It’s already somewhat of a philosophical question when we buy a particular phone because of the way its camera processes photos and video. On Pixel phones, the “dramatic look” with dark and contrasty shadows is by design because it’s “distinct and cool and fresh” compared to the look of captured content on iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones, says Reynolds. That look will change over time with cultural trends, and Google has dialed back some of the dramatic aesthetic in favor of more highlights, but it’s still not a lifelike portrayal of reality.

“Your memories are your reality. What’s more real than your memory of it? If I showed you a photo that didn’t match your memory, you’d say it wasn’t real.”

“[Starting with Pixel 6] you started to see a shift from image processing to image creation, image generation,” he says. “It’s a shift from, ‘Let’s make images less noisy and sharper to let’s recreate your memories’ because your memories are different from reality, and that’s okay. That’s a perception and human thing. Let’s build for humans.”

When I note the difference between capturing reality and memories, Reynolds defends camera creation versus capture. “Your memories are your reality. What’s more real than your memory of it? If I showed you a photo that didn’t match your memory, you’d say it wasn’t real.”

I’m not saying Reynolds is wrong, but it’s a matter of where you stand on capture versus creation. He makes a good point that AI and the many generative capabilities it brings is a way to democratize editing for the average person.

“Back then, people were using edits to cover up bad cameras,” Reynolds says. “These days all phones — a basic picture at a bright window and a low-contrast scene — they all look pretty good. Now, people see editing as part of their creative process, how to make a mark. That’s why we’re also going into editors because we recognize that putting it all directly in cameras is not ideal anymore. People want to be able to press the button themselves afterward to make their own decision, not because they’d be unsatisfied with having it straight out of camera, but because they’re putting more of their life and their soul into it.”

In addition to testing a range of smartphone cameras, Weinbach, who has been tracking the advances in AI models and their applications across consumer products, is less convinced that AI-assisted editing and creation will have lasting appeal for phone cameras. “I don’t think this generative AI ‘painting’ that we’re seeing with photos is really going to be a huge deal. It’s gonna be like the edit app on your phone. What else is inside that? It’s just making editing a little bit easier.”

“Computational photography is not dead.”

Even if new phones will be sold as having all kinds of new AI camera features, Reynolds gently claps back when I ask whether he thinks smartphone cameras and computational photography have peaked.

“Computational photography is not dead,” he says citing Zoom Enhance, a coming-soon feature for the Pixel 8 Pro that uses AI to enhance details in a photo when it’s zoomed-in on just like in an episode of CSI; and Video Boost, another exclusive feature for Pixel 8 Pro that uses AI and cloud processing to brighten videos after they’ve been recorded. “As the world advances, we want to bring those advances back to you.”

Having reviewed virtually every top-tier phone camera for over a decade, Joire echoes Reynolds’ view that computational photography still has a bright future ahead. Somehow, it always comes back to portrait mode. “Now we can machine learn and understand what’s in the background like cars and stuff, and teach the computer to get the edges around people perfectly.” Joire also suggests we could see new phones with even more camera lenses, similar to the ill-fated Light L16 phone that had 16 phone camera lenses and sensors mounted into its phone-like design and touted computational photography as a way to combine the images from all of them into a super photo of sorts with a focus point that could also be fully adjustable after capture. The L16 failed because chip performance was not as advanced in 2017 as it is in today’s phones, but it’s possible another company could roll the dice on that idea again.

There’s also a lot more non-computational photography work that can be made for phone cameras. Real Tone, an image processing feature introduced on the Pixel 6 that captures more accurate skin tones, especially for people of color, was a first step, but Reynolds says there’s more that can be done in terms of cameras showing healthier perceptions of ourselves.

“We have a responsibility to be a better mirror.”

“I know how much a photo on camera can affect how you think about yourself, how you see yourself. People don’t understand what they look like based on a mirror anymore. Nowadays, they understand what they look like based on the photos that they can share on Instagram or other social apps. We have a responsibility to be a better mirror. Authenticity and representation, and building with the community are super, super important when you have that level of power over a person. There are directions that we can go in the future that’s helping people have healthier views of themselves, but that’ll be a different thing [from Real Tone] which is about a real view.”

I am fully supportive of more inclusivity for phone cameras, but you have to admit there is some irony in the Pixel Camera team tackling the responsibility of making skin tones more true to life for a “real view” while at the same time promoting generative AI camera and editing features that alter reality to how you want to remember the moment.

Nearing the end of our interview, Reynolds wants to make clear that “AI is not a goal, it’s a means to an end” and his Pixel Camera team are using it to solve the “foundational problems” that people are having with their phone cameras. Right now, that means giving people editing capabilities in an easy-to-use way. But what he really wants to solve for, and hopes maybe AI could one day be able to figure out, is “timing.”

“There does not exist a moment in time or it is hard to create a moment in time that looks like what you wanted,” he says. “When you’re building a simulation, your gold standard is that you’ve captured the moment in time that no one wanted. That’s a limitation. We would rather produce the moment in time that you wanted and remembered and was real.”

Today, the Google Camera app (renamed to Pixel Camera last fall) is no longer installable on any non-Pixel phone. It’s available in the Google Play Store as an app that can be updated with features by the Pixel Camera team for Google’s phones. There are a number of good reasons for this — mainly because the camera app is optimized for Google’s homegrown Tensor chips used in its Pixel devices and not for the Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek, or other chipsets used by other Android phones. That loss may have no effect on Reynolds and his team working on improving the cameras on existing Pixel devices and on future, unannounced hardware, but for the Android community, it’s the end of an era. There’s still a niche mod scene that continues to hack past Google Camera app releases to work with non-Pixel phones, but the reality is most phone cameras have caught up or surpassed Google on computational photography.

Inadvertently, the Google Camera forced Android phone makers to invest more into making great cameras — and it worked.

In the News: St. Thomas Director of Photography on His New Documentary, ‘The Fishing Hat Bandit’ – Newsroom | University of St. Thomas

Mark Brown, director of photography at the University of St. Thomas and adjunct professor at the university’s College of Arts and Sciences, recently spoke with the Pioneer Press about his documentary film featuring an infamous Minnesota bank robber. “The Fishing Hat Bandit” premieres at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on Friday, April 19.

The documentary filmmaker thought: “If I were in prison and really bored and I got a letter from someone who was interested in my story, I’d probably write back.”

Brown wanted to make a short film about John Whitrock but he didn’t imagine that it would become his first full-length documentary, unfolding over nearly a decade, and the twists and turns he’d encounter along the way. …

“I think a lot of times, in the current environment, these films are whodunits,” Brown said. “But I wanted to figure out what John’s motivations were and figure out how it affected the people that were victims of these crimes.” …

“I was genuinely curious about what it was like to be on the other end of these robberies,” Brown said. “I wasn’t going to make just a profile piece about John. … I wanted to see how it really impacted people.”

Brown was able to track down nearly all the tellers who’d been robbed. Most wanted to leave it in the past, but four agreed to let Brown interview them for the documentary.

Meanwhile, Whitrock had told Brown “he had always kind of convinced himself that this was a victimless crime.” That was until he took a mandated victim-impact class in prison and “he really had come to this epiphany” that he’d been wrong, Brown said.

Meditations on mortality: Venice exhibition revisits the photography of Peter Hujar

Photography “converts the whole world into a cemetery”, wrote Susan Sontag. “Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also—wittingly or unwittingly—the recording-angels of death.”

Sontag was writing a year before the publication of her book On Photography (1977), expanding on the subject in what remains a key text on the medium and its influence on society. The words appeared in an essay to go with a book by a photographer who was little known beyond his bohemian circle of friends and acquaintances, the demi-monde of New York’s downtown scene in the mid 1970s. It was the only book the photographer published, 11 years before his death from Aids-related illness in 1987, and nearly two decades before his reappraisal as a key American photographer of his generation was cemented with an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

His posthumous celebration has since moved beyond his status as a cult figure within a time and place and a community of people that have come to be mythologised. And now, perhaps, we are about to hit peak Peter Hujar. The British actor Ben Wishaw is to play the impoverished yet influential photographer in a film biopic based on Linda Rosenkrantz’s book, Peter Hujar’s Day, retelling a recorded conversation in 1974. But before that, Hujar’s 1976 book Portraits in Life and Death is being turned into an exhibition at this year’s Venice Biennale, one of 30 collateral events selected by curator Adriano Pedrosa to fit the theme, Foreigners Everywhere, and its focus on queer and Indigenous figures.

The exhibition will present all 41 photographs from the book at the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà, close to the Doge’s Palace, staged by the Peter Hujar Foundation and curated by Grace Deveney of the Art Institute of Chicago. It will feature two bodies of work: a series of portraits of fellow artists, writers and performers; and photographs taken of the mummified remains vaulted within the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, made on a Fulbright scholarship in 1963 in the company of his lover, the artist Paul Thek.

The subjects of the portraits “stand, sit, slouch, mostly lie—and are made to appear to meditate on their own mortality”, wrote Sontag, who also sat for the photographer. “Peter Hujar knows that portraits in life are always, also, portraits in death.” The catacomb pictures clearly made an impact on the writer, because they inspired the setting of a scene in her second novel, Death Kit. “So there’s this really beautiful exchange between [Hujar and Sontag] about photography,” says Deveney. “And that comes through in her writing. And there’s that really iconic portrait of her in the series as well.”

Beautiful and morbid irony

Portraits of Sontag, Thek, Divine, Robert Wilson, Fran Lebowitz, John Waters and others from the Lower East Side arts scene are interspersed with the lesser immortals of the Sicilian catacombs. “What seems to have caught Hujar’s eye was the beautiful and morbid irony of the dead, framed to appear to be as lifelike as possible,” Deveney says. “And then, on the flipside, in a lot of the portraits, both in the book and beyond, you get representations of people—friends and chosen family—displayed in ways that underscore the undercurrent of death and life.

“So many of the figures in the book are reclining or appear to be sleeping or are in these kind of otherworldly states where they appear to be looking beyond or through. And so that tension between finding the most lifelike presentations of death, and then sort of treading into these other states of consciousness within the portraits in the book, is something that comes through really clearly in the juxtaposition.”

Portraits is important because it was the only book Peter made,” says the art critic Vince Aletti, a friend of Hujar, whose portrait also appears in the book and the Venice exhibition. It is the first time these pictures have been seen together in Europe, and only the second time they have been shown since their debut at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York in 2002. “And because he got Susan Sontag to write an introduction… he continued to make great—and greater—work but he died before most of it was collected for a book or an exhibition.”

Aletti’s writings have played a part in Hujar’s embrace by a wider audience. “Peter never had the recognition he deserved while he was alive, but the work survives and it’s gratifying to know people want to know more about the pictures and the person who made them,” Aletti says.

“I think of Peter’s work as soulful and sensitive without being in the least sentimental. Whether he’s looking at a choppy sea, a dead cat or a celebrity he’s just met, he’s looking as deep as he can, determined to convey something plain and true. Something that still has a palpable presence after all these years.”

Top photography shows to see in Venice

  • In the exhibition Rise of the Sunken Sun, Inuuteq Storch sets out “to tell the Greenlanders’ visual history, not seen through the visitors’ eyes, but through the Greenlanders’ own.” He is the first photographer and the first Greenlandic artist to represent Denmark at the Biennale, presenting hundreds of images of his own diaristic impressions of daily life alongside family snapshots and archive material from the first professional photographer from the self-governing, autonomous territory (see also p29).
  • Resisting the colonial gaze is also the theme of much of the Bolivian artist River Claure’s work, in which he responds to stereotypical depictions of his homeland by imagining alternative territories that play on notions of tradition and modernity. “Identity is a question, not an answer,” says the photographer, whose work will be shown in the main Biennale exhibition, Foreigners Everywhere.
  • One of the rooms in the exhibition’s Nucleo Storico section will be dedicated to an Italian diaspora of 40 artists who moved abroad in the 20th century and who “played significant roles in the development of the narratives of Modernism”. Among them is the photographer Tina Modotti who became a key figure in the Mexican avant-garde in the 1920s.
  • In the guise of the Institute of Critical Zoologists, Robert Zhao Renhui has spent much of the past 15 years examining man’s complex relationship with the natural world, primarily using photography in his research-based works. He is increasingly turning to video, performance and installation, as in this latest project, Seeing Forest, showing at the Singapore pavilion, which explores the notion of secondary forests, “where novel organisms are able to thrive despite and because of human activity”.

The results of this year’s Close-up Photographer of the Year Challenge have been announced.

The photography challenge – which aims to inspire a wider appreciation of nature’s wealth, encourage a deeper connection to often-overlooked animals, plants and landscapes, and kindle a desire to protect them – has a different theme each year – 2023’s was ‘water’.

The following gallery features all 12 winning images, from a newt feeding on frogspawn at night (overall winner) and rain-covered slime mould to frozen poppies and a spying snake.

‘In Germany, where I live, there are many clear and slow-flowing streams that provide excellent habitat for alpine newts. I have been following their lives for years, and last year was no exception. A few days after the frogs lay their eggs, at dusk, the newts appear and feast on the spawn all through the night. I wanted to capture this moment underwater. To do this, I placed my camera in an underwater housing, attached it with weights, and placed it under the frogs’ eggs. I was a bit nervous at first because I wasn’t sure if the underwater housing was completely waterproof. But I figured that if no bubbles appeared, my camera would stay dry. I manually set the focus on the lens beforehand and hoped to get lucky. ‘I submerged some wild poppies in water with tiarella flowers and froze them overnight. I then placed the frozen block on a lightbox and photographed them using my Venus Laowa super macro lens. ‘For a long time, the idea of ​​capturing the graceful ballet of dragonflies flying over the Garonne (the river that winds near my home) had been running through my head. It’s enchanting to observe hundreds of these creatures circling, skilfully capturing midges and other insects in mid-flight every summer. One day, I settled in the water at a spot where I had noticed a dragonfly regularly returned to rest. I waited patiently for its return. ‘I found this clump of mushrooms with an almost perfect shape and number in Marbury Country Park, UK. I lit the scene from behind with an LED panel, both to fill the bonnets with light and to illuminate the droplets, which I created with a fine mist spray. My aim was to enhance the natural beauty of the fungi by adding more light and atmosphere. I focus bracketed 40 frames of the bonnets, then took one shot with the fungi and the “rain”. ‘Following overnight rain, I came across a colony of 2mm tall Physarum album slime mould fruiting bodies on a short section of beech branch, lying in leaf litter on the woodland floor. On closer inspection, I spotted this little group encased in raindrops. Carefully positioning the branch in a suitable position, taking care not to disturb the droplets, I shot 101 focus bracketed images to capture the full depth of the subjects. ‘Hundreds of items covered in gooseneck barnacles wash up on Chesil Beach, in the UK, every year, carried there by winter storms. These are non-native to the UK and have usually travelled across the Atlantic. This particular item was a plastic bottle with a colony of goose barnacles and some fishing net I found on the beach. To tell the story of ocean litter becoming a habitat for wildlife, I took them to the sheltered side of Chesil in Portland harbour and re-floated them there. The water was about 8°C, I was in a wetsuit and the water was incredibly choppy from the wind, which kept blowing the bottle away from me. I shot upwards as I loved the reflection on the surface of the water, while keeping the bottle and barnacles as the main focus of the image.’ Sandra Stalker

Love-in-the-Mist (Nigella damascena) is the epitome of early summer for me. I have always been fascinated by the variety of nigella flowers. From the bud to the dried seed capsule – each phase holds its own secret. In this case I was intrigued by the details of the stamens and petals, which are surrounded by net-like leaves. Shortly after a rain shower, the tiny drops of water caught in the leaves made me think of a sparkling crown on the bloom. I took the picture in my garden in natural evening light and converted it in post-processing to a very cool blue-green background to match the blue of the flower.’ Claudia Gaupp

‘While searching for macro subjects on dead wood in winter I came across this springtail (Neanura muscorum) covered in dew droplets. Normally this species is quite active, which makes focus stacking almost impossible, but this individual stayed quite still, giving me the opportunity to get a high magnification focus stack. ‘In early autumn, large quantities of moths were swarming in the mountain birch forest of Grövelsjön, Sweden – giving the hike through it a certain dream-like quality. My hiking buddy wasn’t feeling great, so we had to stay and rest in a mountain station, allowing me time to explore the immediate surroundings with my camera. I followed the trail down to Linnés källa – a spring that was supposedly discovered by the botanist Carl Linnaeus. Its surface was littered with large quantities of dead moths, along with some autumn leaves, grasses and algae. It looked to me as if the moths were still dancing over a meadow somewhere, taking one last flight. Later on, I combined five frames in Zerene Stacker to give a greater depth of field.’ Harald Cederlund

‘At Mousecroft pool, Shrewsbury, I photographed this damselfly covered in dew during the early morning hours, at around 3am, in May. Given that insects are cold-blooded and need warmth to move, they typically rest at night. The sudden drop in temperature causes dew to cling to them. This moment is ideal for portraits as they cannot move or fly. As they warm up with the rising sun in the morning, they wipe away the moisture and fly off. To enhance the visual appeal, I used a coloured background card to add contrast and additional hues to the image. Afterwards, I stacked the frames in Helicon Focus, edited in Lightroom and Photoshop and then finished off with Topaz DeNoise.’ Pete Burford

Five photographers tackle matters of home, identity, and migration

WINCHESTER — As a title, “Traces of Existence,” the show currently at the Griffin Museum of Photography, could apply to pretty much any aspect of the medium. Among many (many) other things, a trace of existence is what each and every photograph is.

The show runs through June 9.

Here the title refers to matters of home, identity, and migration. Each of the five photographers with work in the show — Muriel Hasbun, Alejandro “Luperca” Morales, Rodrigo Valenzuela, Ileana Doble Hernandez, Alejandro Cartagena — is Hispanic. In a sensible curatorial decision, all wall texts are bilingual. Griffin director Crista Dix curated the show.

Muriel Hasbun is a Salvadoran immigrant. “Traces” includes 18 images from her “Pulse: New Cultural Registers” series. Although these works are photographic, they look like paintings: adjacent to Surrealism, spectral and often slightly eerie, hovering between abstraction and representation. Is that the outline of a whale there? A set of torsos here? A sleeping, or dead, body? The works are all the more striking for being subdued, even recessive, in appearance.

“Pulse” takes its title from the fact that the images incorporate lines from seismic readings from El Salvador, documenting earthquakes and volcanic activity. Symbolically, the lines connect Hasbun (and the viewer) to Hasbun’s homeland. Practically, they’re a distinctive visual element, harkening to grids, schematics, and, yes, barbed wire.

Hasbun also has a video in “Traces,” describing a final visit to her dying father and how they made paper boats together. She invites museumgoers to make their own (materials are provided). Spread across the floor is a colorful and charming array of boats made by viewers of previous exhibitions of the video. Boats made by Griffin visitors will be added over the run of “Traces.”

Alejandro “Luperca” Morales was born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. That fact is pertinent because he has a pair of videos in here, showing the Paso del Norte International Bridge, between El Paso and Ciudad Juárez. One is a live stream from the bridge’s walkway, the other a loop of excerpts culled from the stream. Both are, in effect, surveillance footage. The experience of watching is at once hypnotic and unsettling.

Of the five artists’ work, this is the simplest visually. It’s hardly simple otherwise, touching as it does— presenting as it does — immigration, deportation, and inequality. Morales notes that the bridge cameras belong to the same network as the El Paso Zoo’s. He does not belabor the point, leaving it to museumgoers to draw their own conclusions.

Rodrigo Valenzuela, “New Land 231.”Rodrigo Valenzuela

Born in Chile, Rodrigo Valenzuela lives in Los Angeles. The six examples from his “New Land” series are large-scale desert scenes. On those scenes, he superimposes lines, planes, and structures. His work recalls that of John Pfahl, in its juxtaposition of landscape with human artifice. Emptiness becomes a kind of ghost settlement. The dry, dun landscape becomes an extension of geometry — or perhaps the other way around. The work takes on a further dimension, insofar as this is terrain associated with the attempted border crossings of undocumented immigrants and a history of violence going back to the Spanish Conquest.

Valenzuela is the Griffin’s first Cummings Fellow. His duties include working with students at Winchester High School, which is a short walk from the museum and has a vigorous tradition of student photography.

Ileana Doble Hernandez, “Blue,” 2023.Ileana Doble Hernandez

A self-described “artivist,” Ileana Doble Hernandez was born in Mexico and currently lives in Boston. She has work from two series in the show. “Los Gringos” consists of 14 color diptychs of Los Angeles street life. They frequently contain text (signs, banners). There are five lightbox transparences from the other series, “Pollage” (a mash-up of “politics” and “collage”). Where the diptychs are lively, the transparencies go beyond that, with their frenetic content and garish appearance.

Alejandro Cartagena was born in the Dominican Republic and lives in Mexico. He repurposes vintage vernacular photographs in two ways. With the larger group in “Traces,” he removes the sitters’ faces, a commentary on identity, absence, presence, and disappearance (a word with a grim and weighty history in Latin America). One such distressed picture would look bizarre. A dozen would make a telling point. There are many dozens here, which rather dulls that point.

The other group consists of three arrangements of vintage black-and-white studio portraits of unidentified people. The portraits are various shapes and sizes, with several dozen within each frame. The idea is to convey “erasure through multiplicity.”

That sure sounds like echo-chamber artspeak. For at least this viewer, there’s an echo of Walker Evans’s 1936 “Penny Picture Display.” That photograph shows a sign for a Georgia photo studio, consisting of 225 thumbnail-size portraits. “I look at it,” Evans said, “and think, and think, and think about all those people.” Sometimes art manages to join with democracy, making traces of existence that enlighten, extend, and maybe even endure.

On April 20, an opening reception will be held at the museum from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. It’s free and open to the public.

Experiment with your long lens

Experiment with your long lens

We all know that a long lens is useful for photographing wildlife and things that are far away. I took my new 150-600mm lens, (check my review) which has a field of view equivalent to a 300-1200mm full frame lens, and turned it to subjects normally more suited to macro or shorter lenses. Ended up with some pretty nice results.

In the backyard

This idea started in the backyard. While waiting to capture some birds, I turned my OM System 150-600mm lens to plant life much closer. Facilitated by adding a 10mm extension tube I was able to get some very interesting bokeh with a very shallow depth of field. This lens has a long reach but I was still able to hand hold due to the built-in incredible camera and lens Image Stabilization. 1200mm equivalent at 1/125th of a sec in the shadows and 1/8000th of a sec when photographing the hummingbird in full sun.

Hummingbird

Is this an incredible hummingbird photo? Nope. But, I’m seeing how far I can push the lens while hand holding. Not being tethered to a tripod comes in handy as the hummers tend to move around to different perches when they are away from the feeders.

Boredom for the win

Maybe it’s boredom or maybe it’s an active mind difficult to quiet. I was waiting for the hummers to return and just for fun I turned the camera to the greenery and miniature roses that surround my patio. I’ve used long lenses in the past for a different look with small subjects. This turned out to be a solid reminder to remember to work the long lenses more often.

Gear used

I used the OM-1 camera fitted with 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 OM System lens. Being able to hand hold this lens lends itself to capturing more creative images. I took this same concept and gear added a tripod and captured some next level images. That article will be coming soon.
