Husband-wife photographers’ work on display at UTPB

Odessa photographers, photography instructors and husband and wife Steve Goff and Beckwith Thompson are exhibiting their works together at the Nancy Fyfe Cardozier Gallery, located in the Charles A. Sorber Visual Arts Studios at the University of Texas Permian Basin.

Titled “Retrospective 942430,” Goff described the work as an exhibit of photography and artworks that he and Thompson “created over a 30-year period while teaching at Odessa College, making art, and staying happily married!”

A reception with the artists will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Nancy Fyfe Cardozier Gallery. The exhibit runs through March 8. There are more than 50 works on display.

Goff said he is showing only Lone Star Dance photographs and Thompson is showing a wide selection of artwork and photos.

The last time they exhibited together was in 2021. They have also participated in group shows.

In figuring out what they wanted to display, Thompson said they decided to divide the room in half and do what they wanted with their particular space.

The significance of the name of the show, Goff said, is that they met in 1994 and this is 2024.

“So this is 30 years of us being together and photographing, helping each other with our artwork, teaching alongside each other,” Goff said.

“And staying happily married,” Thompson said. “… It’s kind of a key part.”

Goff said Thompson brought Native American spirituality to the relationship. He had not been involved with it and didn’t know much about it.

“She introduced that to me and I was really excited about it, so I started going to some of the ceremonies. The first year after we were married in ‘98, they had the first Sundance in Lampassas. That was the very first one, and since then, I’ve been to all of them except for four,” Goff said. “This work hasn’t been shown very much. … With this idea of the two of us and my recent retirement, I kind of wanted to show some work that is really important to me, and like I said, not very many people have seen the work before.”

Thompson said Goff is displaying one subject over 30 years and she is showing multiple subjects.

“I was in grad school when we met and so the Sacred Centers was what I did for my thesis show. I was working on that when we met and it involves me driving long distances to find churches that I’d heard about, or just roaming around looking for churches, and going in and photographing. Generally, I was the only person in there and I was using a four-by- five field camera. The film is four by five inches. For instance, if I drove six hours to a place, a church, I had a certain amount of time to spend there, and then drive back so I would choose a few spots that I wanted to photograph and then I would do two exposures of it to make sure I had a good negative when I went away. Just a lot of sitting and then hoping because you couldn’t see anything,” Thompson said.

There is a door in her exhibit that is from a country store where her mother worked. Thompson and Goff went to get the door after her great aunt passed away. The door, which came from Southern Missouri, is part of a “church cube” in the exhibit.

“That door has been kind of a through line for the generations and I used it in my Sacred Centers master’s thesis show,” Thompson said.

Part of her exhibit also includes portraits of multiple generations of families from pregnancy through birth over the decades.

“I started photographing when the mother was pregnant, and then I photographed the newborn and then she got pregnant again. Rinse and repeat, and then go forward 30 years. There are a few people that I’ve done multiple children, and then some people I just met, or photographed because they heard about me,” Thompson said. “I hadn’t really planned on doing maternity, but I had photographed my childhood friend and then told some friends of ours in Taos (that) we went to visit and they said did you bring your camera? I said yes. They said good because we found three pregnant women for you. I said, Oh, really, so it just kept growing from there. We didn’t have children of our own. We had students every semester. I realized that I was following my body by photographing when I was childbearing age and newborns just kept going. And so now I’m photographing more gray-haired people and enjoying that. I have an image that I’ve had in the studio for a long time. It has a great-grandmother, a grandmother, mother and child. It’s a vertical image and then I have lots of familial images that take up a whole wall in our house. We don’t have that many walls. It was done salon style, like my side of the room is museum style, gallery style.”

Many of Goff’s pieces are pigment prints. The term pigment print indicates that it’s an archival ink and it’s a print that will last a long time, he said.

One of his works is a series of portraits printed on vinyl.

Goff said one of the original requests from the chiefs at the Lone Star Sundance was documentation of the traditional ways of the Lakota Sioux. He is currently working on a book about Leonard Crow Dog (Aug. 18, 1942 – June 5, 2021).

“The images came from a couple of different ceremonies on the land and I wanted to do portraits of people. I’ve called them land portraits, or ceremony people. I really wanted to put those together. They were shot with film, and old style view camera … I wanted to include some of the people that have been important to the ceremony there at Lampassas and people who follow that path,” Goff said.

Both Goff and Thompson are looking forward to the reception.

Goff said they are anxious to see friends and family and colleagues.

“We’re very grateful that UT invited us to present,” Thompson said.

She added that she has taught at UTPB and they have done some lecturing. She and Goff noted that UTPB and OC have been very supportive.

“This is a big moment for us. My thesis show was on Valentine’s Day, so it’s almost the anniversary,” Thompson said. “I had the largest number of people ever for that, for the thesis shows, because I was from Lubbock originally. Parents, friends of parents, family, so I think there might be a fair number of people.”

One friend told them that retrospectives are for gathering up and looking back at what’s been there, which allows you space for what’s to come.

“There’s a … popular phrase — good completions, new beginnings — so we’re hopeful that our new beginnings continue with the commercial jobs of decorating large spaces with our artwork like the banks, auto school, small businesses and people’s houses,” Thompson said.

Artists’ bio

Steve Goff and Beckwith Thompson are artists/educators who create commissioned fine-art photography for designers, Realtors, businesses and homeowners.

Their large wall art has furnished everything from a tiny, elegant home library to small business, industrial schools and multi-story commercial buildings.

Their subject matter includes florals, landscapes, portraiture and still-life images. So far, they have explored and curated art for various industries such as oil, banking, music, architecture and automobiles, often creating artwork on-site and are actively seeking to venture into different visual sectors.

They also photograph people and products for businesses, plus teach photographic workshops here and abroad. Together, their award-winning artwork is regularly shown in museums, venues and exhibits nationwide and they have sold work to clients worldwide.

When she was first starting out, Thompson worked with National Geographic photographer Mary Ellen Mark traveling around the world as a loader. She loaded and unloaded equipment. While they waited to photograph the famous person they were photographing, she got to experience whatever city they were in and “then come back and tell them what I did at dinner at 10 p.m.”

WATCHUNG– The Somerset County Library System of New Jersey’s (SCLSNJ) Watchung branch, located at 12 Stirling Road, will host an exhibit curated by Virginia Hartmann, highlighting the special collections of the United States Air Force Academy Library in honor of Women’s History Month, through the months of February and March.

Hartmann is a retired lieutenant colonel of the United States Air Force.

The photography class at CHS not only promises a fun experience but also provides a platform for students to unleash their creativity while capturing moments that last a lifetime.

With 29 years of dedicated service at CHS, Mrs. Boudreau reflects on the special experience of teaching second generations. “It’s special to have watched a student grow up in the program and then years later have that student’s child as well!” Mrs. B said.

The Parada Del Sol and Trail’s End Festival was held last Saturday — made possible by the Scottsdale Charros and Oliver Smith Jeweler — welcoming colorful entrants, community leaders and groups along with and patrons of all thing western Americana.

Found part of the Western Week, Scottsdale aficionados say the Parada Del Sol supports the rich heritage of the community of Scottsdale and ensures the western legacy glows as brightly as it did a century ago.

Highlights of the Parada Del Sol and Trail’s End Celebration included:

Parada del Sol (10 a.m.-noon) and Trail’s End Celebration (noon-4 p.m.): Saturday, Feb. 3, Historic Old Town. Scottsdale’s own hometown parade features colorful floats, mounted horse riders, horse-drawn carriages, marching bands, wagons and stagecoaches.

The parade ends with a western-spirited festival featuring live music, street entertainment, dancing, a wine garden and a cowboy kids’ zone.

‘Photo Tour’ is an Upcoming Travel Photography-Themed Board Game

An upcoming board game the turns players into travel photographers is taking off on Kickstarter.

Photo Tour: North America is a tabletop strategy board game for one to five players who collect photos landmarks in the United States and Canada. These photos also come with bonuses to help players in the game, and the cards feature hand-drawn artwork and information about the places they depict.

Creator Eugene Timashov’s Kickstarter for the game says Photo Tour, especially when played with the basic rules, works for all age levels, so even those who don’t have a ton of strategy board game experience can try it out. Additionally, players can crank the difficulty level with expansions.

Timashov says on the page that Photo Tour’s rules are easy to teach and notes the emphasis on building a journal, which can keep players engaged. There are five travel journals, all of which offer different strategy bonuses. Changing up which to use can also change things up when replaying.

As with many games, players win by getting the most points, which are collected by taking pictures. The photos players take are worth a specific number of points and go into their traveler’s journals. From there, using the right equipment can enhance a photo, boosting the possible total. There are also photo contests, which can give players an edge for completing certain objectives. The game ends when one person fills the journal. That’s when everyone tallies up their points to get their total scores and see who the winner is.

There are 65 photography equipment tokens of five types, including lens, tripod, and film. Players use “Meeples,” figures of photographers on screen-printed wood, to represent their characters and get around based on the results of the transportation dice. A premium components edition, which is a Kickstarter exclusive, upgrades these and other pieces as well.

There are three expansions as well, one of which is a mini expansion, that add new gameplay elements and strategies to win.

Timashov’s Kickstarter page lists a goal of $10,000 CAD, which the campaign has already well exceeded, reaching more than $110,000 CAD. But, the page lists additional stretch goals meant to add details and enhancements as backing increases. For those interested, the main Kickstarter edition of Photo Tour: North America costs $60 CAD (about $45 USD), the version with enhanced components is $89 CAD ($66 USD), and getting the game with premium components and the expansions will run $99 CAD ($74 USD). The campaign continues now through February 23.

This is the story of “Earthrise,” an image that changed the world, emerging from the unlikeliest of circumstances aboard a spacecraft plagued by fogged windows.

In the nascent days of the space program, the concept of space photography was largely unexplored, considered merely a subset of industrial photography. Initial images were confined to spaceships, launches, and astronaut training, all captured from the vantage point of Earth’s surface.

When John Glenn ventured into orbit as the first American, photography was an afterthought. Armed with a hastily modified Ansco Autoset 35mm camera procured from a local drugstore, Glenn’s every action was deemed an experiment in the unknown realms of space. In those early stages, photography was relegated to a recreational pursuit, with skepticism about the practicality of capturing meaningful images from space.

Concerns loomed over the implications of photographing other nations from orbit, as it was feared to be perceived as an act of ill will or even an act of war. However, the landscape of space photography evolved rapidly. Weather satellites revolutionized meteorology, satellites were deployed for Earth resource mapping, and intelligence-gathering responsibilities were gradually handed over from high-flying aircraft to orbiting satellites.

The paradigm shifted with NASA’s lunar probes—Ranger, Surveyor, and Lunar Orbiter—producing a wealth of images critical for mapping Apollo’s landing sites. The first lunar images in 1964, transmitted by Ranger 7, paved the way for Surveyor probes to gently land on the Moon’s surface. Subsequent Lunar Orbiters meticulously mapped the Moon, contributing to the selection of potential sites for human landings.

Unmodified Hasselblad 500C medium format cameras played a pivotal role in early space missions, proving instrumental in the Mercury and Gemini programs. As Apollo missions unfolded, Apollo 8 marked a turning point. The deployment of Hasselblad EL electric cameras with automated features marked a leap in efficiency. The cameras had black anodized surfaces to minimize reflections, and astronauts, now trained in photography, used sighting rings for guidance.

Modified commercial cameras, color control patches, and synoptic surveys showcased the potential of space photography. However, technical challenges persisted, with astronauts occasionally reporting discrepancies between the colors they saw in space and those captured in photographs.

Enter the Apollo 8 mission, a pivotal step towards the historic moon landing. Amid a tightly packed schedule and technical challenges such as fogged windows and limited visibility, the astronauts found themselves face to face with an unexpected moment—Earthrise. Bill Anders, armed with intuition and a request for color film, seized the opportunity to capture the Earth rising over the moon’s horizon.

The transcript reveals the improvised nature of early space photography, with astronauts adapting and experimenting with equipment on the fly. From modified cameras to stripped-down versions, the journey of NASA’s photography was marked by ingenuity and quick thinking.

On Apollo 11, a comprehensive set of camera equipment, including Hasselblad cameras, a color television camera, and a black and white TV camera, captured historic moments. The lunar surface camera, a modified Hasselblad 500EL, featured a Reseau plate for calibration and unique adaptations for the lunar environment.

Post-Apollo 11, subsequent moon landings continued to utilize similar photographic equipment. Astronauts underwent rigorous training, simulating lunar traverses on Earth to familiarize themselves with camera operation. Over the years, space photography evolved from an experimental endeavor to a crucial aspect of space exploration, leaving an indelible mark on human understanding of the cosmos.

The medium of photography is about capturing reality and depicting it in the form of an image. But when we come across a photo where familiar elements such as shape, colour and texture differ from the characteristics we experience in our own reality, how do we process that information? 

Imagery that differs from our reality presents the opportunity to challenge our brains and learn about ourselves. The human brain recognises an image in mere milliseconds, classifies it and attributes different characteristics to it. That is why everyone inevitably ends up with different interpretations and emotions. After all, one beautiful aspect of visual art can be that everyone connects it with their own impressions – we all live in the same reality, but our perception of it varies. This variation occurs in our minds and leads some to assign meaning to things that may not exist. So this leads to the question: What is reality? 

Dutch artist Nancy Poeran raises this question in her work. She combines a variety of art forms, including photography, sketches and other techniques, augmented by a tool that has proved controversial in photography – Artificial Intelligence (AI). Nancy’s work focuses on subjectivity so, when she engages in a dialogue with AI, her goal is not to generate purely artificial images but to enhance aspects of reality.

Nancy’s work demonstrates how a machine, programmed by humans but unable to exist or operate like us, can effectively augment our perception of reality.

After studying for her Masters degree, Nancy Poeran worked for 20 years in various management positions. In 2020, she changed her career path and decided to pursue her true passion of photography. In 2021, her series ‘Any Body’ was nominated for the Rabo Portrait Prize Talent Award. In 2022 and 2023, she showcased her series ‘Women Past and Present’ at Nyenrode University in Breukelen and Amsterdam. In December 2023, Nancy graduated from The Photo Academy in Amsterdam.

You use a variety of techniques to bring your visions to life, so what significance does photography have here?

In every technique I use, I think as a photographer. On the one hand, I decide which settings to use. I determine the input, composition, light, setting and the pose. And like photography, it is all about capturing the decisive moment. Making the judgment call as to when all the ingredients are the optimal blend and will result in an image that perfectly portrays what I have envisaged. 

The remarkable thing is now that nearly everything can be created through AI, I am abstracting and isolating my subjects to get back to the essence of an image.

Many photographers believe that AI will negatively impact the industry, but how important is it for your work?

I think the introduction of AI is comparable to the introduction of photography compared with painting, and in turn, digital photography compared with analogue photography. There is a lot of fear around the artistic value and the perceived ease of use. Of course, in theory, anyone can start with AI, but it requires a new set of skills and a different way of thinking to achieve a good quality image with my signature. AI is constantly developing, requiring the user to grow and stretch oneself. 

For me, AI offers me new artistic possibilities, stimulates my creativity and therefore broadens my conceptual framework. It has also encouraged me to work with other techniques, such as video and sculpture.

How does your creative process look from conception to realisation?

The figures I create through AI are inspired by my own emotions or people in my surroundings that I observe and try to understand. I always start the working process with an image of my own. This can vary from a sketch, a photo or even a certain texture. Subsequently, I enter into a dialogue with AI. I never accept the output outright. I always keep adapting it to create the image I want to portray, using elements such as ambiguity, sensuality and the emotions that I want to convey. I love every minute of this quest.

Can you give more insight into the visual strategies you employ to explore the relationship between inner perceptions and external reality?

In the series ‘We Are All Made of Light and Shadow’, I use contrasts in an interplay – black and white, lines and organic shapes – to create figures that I abstract and deform. And despite the same ingredients, we interpret each individual image differently. We can observe various human shapes with different expressions of emotion. This is a process that takes place in our minds. We give meaning to something that might not even exist. 

You embrace the idea that reality is subjective and that there are multiple layers of truth. Could you expand on this concept?

I have always been interested in human psychology and identity. When we look at the other person, we have an opinion based on our own frame of reference. It all depends on what we want to see and also on what the other person wants to reveal. But essentially, we are all made out of the same elements. Perhaps this is what we need to be more open to, the idea that there is not only one reality.

Why is art history, particularly cubism, a source of inspiration for your work?

What I find interesting about cubism is that it is about a different way of seeing things. This raises the question, can I trust my observations? I find elements such as the simplification of shapes and confusing perspectives intriguing. With everything happening in the world today, we need to be constantly alert to what we observe. Not through suspicion, but from realising that there is room for different perspectives and contrasts that can enrich each other.

You refer to yourself as an AI Explorer. What is the most impactful aspect that you’ve discovered so far for your art?

AI is a tool for me to realise my ideas and it brings me new possibilities and perspectives. It can sometimes be frustrating because I don’t have 100 percent control. Working with AI is like being on holiday exploring a new city and walking into an unknown alleyway. Sometimes, this results in the most wonderful experience and, at other times, you might end up lost. But in the end, you always have to take control of your own journey.

Do you find that you have experienced a lack of recognition for your photographic work due to the involvement of AI?

Over the past year, I have been in contact with many people, ranging from art collectors, curators, art critics, scholars and fellow artists. One thing I have noticed is that, with the rise of AI, we are entering a new era. Historically, all art movements and developments within technology first face scepticism and then the friction arrives. That is a natural phenomenon.

There’s a misconception amongst some audiences, who think that the use of AI is an easy route and less creative. This group rejects it straight away and does not want to explore the deeper meaning of the art and its creation. There is also a group that is more neutral and open-minded, however, they prefer the medium of photography as the only way to capture the soul of a person. Then there is a group that finds it interesting and intriguing. 

It is an interesting journey. I think what it comes down to is that I do not pretend that my images are real life, I ask the question ‘What is reality’? And is a portrait taken with a camera ‘reality’ and a good representation of the person? In the end, I want to present my vision. For me, the medium does not matter. I would like my art to be appreciated because of its conceptual meaning and visual representation. Art needs to be stimulating and it needs to be slightly disturbing. I hope to be able to contribute to this.

Why don’t you name your artworks or give them titles?

If I gave each image a title, I would label them for one certain thing. And that is exactly what I want to prevent – it would be a contradiction to the conceptual thought of the series. Each viewer has his or her own version of it, so the title has to be given by them.

Have you found the answers to any of the questions raised in your work?

The answer is that reality does not exist, or at least, there is no single version of the truth. What has helped me in this process is the acceptance that everything can coexist side by side as long as we stay inquisitive.

Chen Liang’s “Mirrorless Camera for Makers” Is a Tiny Photography Powerhouse

Maker Chen Liang (陳亮) has built a “mirrorless camera for makers,” and it’s considerably more compact than anything you’d find in an off-the-shelf package — powered by a LILYGO T-Display S3 Pro microcontroller.

“The full name of [the] mirrorless camera is ‘mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera,'” Liang explains by way of introduction to the project. “Previously, [an] interchangeable-lens camera is [a] DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera. Start from digital camera, the optical viewfinder can be replaced by a digital viewfinder or live view screen. Then the whole optical design are simplified and the mirror of DSLR also be eliminated, so the new design interchangeable-lens camera is called [a] mirrorless camera.”

Rather than buying an off-the-shelf commercial camera, though, Liang opted to jump into the mirrorless world with something a little more pocket-friendly. The heart of the project is the LILYGO T-Display S3 Pro, a compact smartphone-like development board with a 2.33″ color touchscreen display behind which is an Espressif ESP32-S3R8 dual-core microcontroller.

To this, Liang has added the builder’s choice of an Omnivision OV2640. OV3660, or OV5640 camera sensor — or any other with a compatible interface and an M12 mount, which provides the interchangeable-lens part of the camera’s definition. A 3D-printed replacement for the T-Display’s housing provides both somewhere the mount the camera and its lens and a tripod mount point — “[I] highly recommend us[ing the] tripod for the stabilities of manual focus,” Liang writes. “Any tiny camera tripod should be OK.”

A demonstration program captures photos when the button connected to general-purpose input/output (GPIO) Pin 12 is pressed, storing it to a microSD card. The result is a truly tiny camera which offers surprisingly high-quality captures — though Liang has suggested a range of possible improvements, including modifying the software to offer focusing aids and adding Wi-Fi-based remote control, GPS-based location tagging, or even onboard machine learning models for speech-driven capture, face-targeting auto-focus, and facial recognition.

Sony World Photography Awards 2024 winners announced, here’s a complete list

The Sony World Photography Awards 2024, a collaboration between the World Photography Organisation and Sony that celebrates the achievements of photographers worldwide. At the forefront is India’s very own Mitul Kajaria, who secured the National Award, emphasising the remarkable talent emerging from the country.

This year’s competition saw around 395,000 entries from over 220 countries, showcasing the diversity and global reach of the Sony World Photography Awards.Kajaria’s winning photograph, “Child Sleeping at a Construction Site,” captured a poignant moment of daily life, portraying a young child peacefully napping amidst the hustle of a construction site.
