Nikon has announced the Z6 III, the company’s third-generation of its full-frame mirrorless camera, which brings a faster 24MP sensor that boosts autofocus and video capabilities over its predecessors, and in a world’s first, offers a “partially stacked” CMOS sensor.

The standout feature of the Z6 III is that CMOS sensor, which Nikon says has some of the performance benefits of the fully stacked sensors in the Z8 and Z9 models, but without the associated cost of this relatively pricey and cutting edge technology.

From a tech perspective, Nikon has said little, but the sensor appears to have built-up circuitry on its edges and closer to the pixels themselves, enabling much faster readout.

The result is that the camera can deliver full-width 6K video at up to 60p, and a flash sync speed of 1/60s.

The other standout feature of the new camera is the autofocus, which Nikon says is up to 20% faster than it was in the Z6 II, and comparable with the Z8 and Z9.

The new model also gains the 3D Tracking and subject recognition of the 8 and 9, and can focus at down to –10EV. ISO maxes out at 64000 (and up to ISO 51200 for video), and like the Zf, the Z6III can use its subject recognition system even in manual focus mode, a really useful feature.

Build-wise, the Z6 III is a larger camera than its predecessors and also heavier by 55g (it’s 760g vs 705g).

Early impressions are that the III is wider and thicker than the II, although the button positions are essentially unchanged.

One feature that is new however is the EVF, which jumps up to a much brighter and denser 5.76M dots. The panel can go as bright at 4000nits, a significant improvement on its predecessors 3.69M dot OLED. The Z6 III is also the first mid-range Nikon to gain a fully-articulated screen. 

Other features include the addition of pre-burst capabilities and multi-shot high resolution modes, improved image stabilisation of 8 stops versus 5 on the II, and the same EN-EL15c battery as its predecessor.

That said, an additional MB-N14 battery pack allows the Nikon Z6III’s battery life to be boosted by approximately 1.9x.

Nikon has also used its launch of the Z6 III to announce the Nikon Imaging Cloud, an all-new cloud library with its own Nikon presets and user imaging recipes.

Plus, the Cloud allows for wireless image uploads and (finally!) automatic firmware updates. However, for now the service is scheduled to start at a later date. 

Finally, video specs are also impressive – there’s 6K 60p in N-RAW, and 6K 30p in ProRes RAW. In addition there is Internal Raw video, and a full-sized HDMI socket.

A renowned photographer claims Nike ‘snookered’ him out of the picture that would become the Air Jordan logo

In 1984 at a photo shoot for the U.S. Olympic team, basketball met ballet. 

That’s when a 21-year-old player from the University of North Carolina was asked to leap toward the basket, ball in hand, and perform a grand jeté—the classic ballet move where a dancer jumps and spreads their legs wide. That young man was Michael Jordan, and his pose would go on to become the logo for the $6 billion brand that, to this day, bears his name. 

In a new short documentary titled Jumpman that premiered at the Tribeca film festival, the photographer who took that picture, Jacobus “Co” Rentmeester, alleges his work was copied to create the famous logo. 

“There is a certain brutality by major corporations,” Rentmeester told Fortune. “They just acquire what they think they need—that’s fine—but then they don’t want to accept the sharing of the creative process. They just want to take it and drop the rest in the garbage.” 

Tom Dey, the director of the movie and Rentmeester’s son-in-law, said the picture of Jordan “wildly succeeded in his goal, which is that it will never be forgotten, but it exacted a great personal price” on Rentmeester, who is now 88. “So there’s great irony in that for me.”

Nike did not respond to a request for comment.

Companies often take great care in safeguarding their logos, which are among the most critical pieces of branding and become shortcuts for millions (if not billions) of consumers worldwide. No longer just a sketch meant to draw a shopper’s wandering eye in a store, a logo is now a representation of a brand’s values, its ability to connect with people. It should, in theory, represent something. 

However, that level of visibility also makes them prime candidates for the legal battles—either between companies complaining their logos are too similar or from a designer claiming they were ripped off. Several famous logos have been alleged to have been replicated from other companies that preceded them, usually inadvertently. While other times creators for hire, like Rentmeester, feel they haven’t got their fair share.

Photographing Michael Jordan, a ‘man without gravity’

In Rentmeester’s case, the photo he originally took was commissioned by Life magazine, a publication known for working with renowned photographers like Robert Capa and Margaret Bourke-White. An elite athlete himself, Rentmeester represented his native Holland as a rower at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, before becoming a photographer. Over his career, Rentmeester photographed the Vietnam War, the 1972 Olympics, and the Watts Riots, with some of his work appearing in Fortune when it was still owned by Time Inc. 

For the Jordan assignment, Life wanted something slightly unusual. “I was asked to do a photo essay of athletes in outstanding situations,” Rentmeester told Adweek, describing his assignment. 

Instead of putting Jordan on a basketball court, Rentmeester decided to photograph him outdoors, against the backdrop of a clear blue sky with his arms and legs splayed out. The idea was to capture Jordan’s athleticism as if it were flight: “a person in the air without gravity in the frame,” he recalled. 

That picture, Rentmeester said, was then used as the basis for a later photo shoot commissioned by Nike and shot by photographer Chuck Kuhn. In Kuhn’s photograph, Jordan is seen in a similar pose over the Chicago city skyline vaulting toward an outdoor basketball hoop with an aluminum backboard and metal netting. Notably, in this version Jordan is wearing Nike sneakers rather than the New Balance ones he wore in Rentmeester’s picture. 

Years later, in the late 1980s when Rentmeester was on assignment for Marlboro scouting locations in Painted Desert, Nev., he crossed paths with Kuhn when the two happened to be staying in the same motel. 

Nike ‘had snookered me’

The culprits, Rentmeester and Dey claim, were the Nike art directors who reneged on a promise to credit him for his work. An ad agency working for Nike had reached out to Rentmeester for a print of his photograph. He agreed to send over copies of his work in exchange for $150 and an agreement his work wouldn’t be copied or duplicated, according to correspondence viewed by Fortune. “They ignored that, obviously,” Rentmeester said.

Two weeks later, while taking a cab from Chicago’s O’Hare airport to the offices of ad agency Leo Burnett, Rentmeester saw a billboard with a strikingly similar image: a balletic Jordan spread-eagle, soaring toward a basketball hoop. 

Upon realizing this, Rentmeester threatened to sue Nike. “In my mind, it was completely a fraud case,” Rentmeester said. “They had snookered me.” 

He eventually backed down. In March 1985, Rentmeester instead accepted $15,000 for a two-year license to use his picture in North America, according to an invoice viewed by Fortune. That agreement was never renewed after it expired 37 years ago, Dey wrote in an email. “They kept using it all these years without coming back to me,” Rentmeester said. 

In 2015, Rentmeester made good on his threat of legal action, suing Nike in federal court in Oregon, where the company is based. But that lawsuit left Rentmeester without the credit he had hoped for. The judge in the case didn’t grant him the jury trial Rentmeester sought, ruling the two photographs were different enough as to have been separate works. Rentmeester eventually appealed the case to the Supreme Court, which declined to reopen it, upholding a ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court.  

“I felt very restricted because as a single individual taking on the law firms that Nike could produce, there seemed like very little chance that I would go far,” Rentmeester said. “They simply ignored me because they felt they were powerful enough to just throw me under the bus in a certain way.” 

Companies have been accused of copying logos before

Nike’s Air Jordan logo is hardly the first corporate logo to become embroiled in allegations of copying. 

In 2014, Airbnb found that its triangular logo was virtually identical to that of software company Automation Anywhere. At the time, Airbnb said it was a coincidence the two were so similar. Eventually Automation Anywhere changed its logo, while Airbnb kept the one it still uses today. 

Air Jordan’s parent company, Nike, had its famed swoosh logo designed by a college student in 1971. Carolyn Davidson, a design student at Portland State University, was asked by Nike founder Phil Knight (who at the time was teaching accounting at the university) if she’d be willing to do some graphic design for his then fledgling shoe company, she told ABC News in 2016. Eventually Knight picked the swoosh, which “he didn’t love,” according to Davidson. For her work, Davidson charged Knight $35. He would later gift her some Nike stock and a swoosh-shaped ring. 

Davidson, though, is sanguine about the role she played in designing what would become one of the most recognizable logos in the world. “While I’m proud of what I did, in some way I see it as just another design,” she told ABC. “It was Phil and the employees at Nike that turned the business into what it was. If they didn’t have the savvy, it would have been just another drawing.“

Rentmeester, who was aware of Davidson’s story, said he was never shown that sort of good faith from Nike. If he had been, then perhaps the years of animosity and lingering sense of injustice might have been avoided.

“The irony is that had they just hired him to retake his picture none of this would have happened,” Dey said.

“When Lewis Carroll sent Alice through the looking glass, she entered a fantastical world replete with an engaging ensemble of characters and everything including logic, in reverse,” write the shows curators, gallery owners Andrea McCafferty and Kat O’Neill. “In ‘Through the Looking Glass, the viewer is also transported and there is also an engaging ensemble of characters, but nothing is in reverse. Unless, of course, you back up to get a closer look.”

Fashion photographer Greg Lotus creates a world where it is perfectly normal for a sophisticate to be across from a large, perfectly coiffed poodle enjoying a champagne lunch or to witness a giraffe striking a pose or to come upon a woman disguised as a peacock lounging on a crimson divan.

Drawing inspiration from classical paintings and a wide array of sources and life experiences, Lotus reinterprets in his own evocative way the use of light and shadow, playing with angles and composition to enhance the graphic quality of his images. Lotus is a master of allure. All his narratives draw the viewer in.

In The Black Room of the gallery, another world presents itself only now with words telling a story alongside the characters as mixed media artist John Joseph Hanright presents a heart asking who is the victor and vivid pink lips questioning what is fabulous and Mickey Mouse as a possible bruiser.

Hanright is a painter and assemblage artist who brings together a combination of vintage pieces from the 1940s to early 1960s alongside contemporary imagery to form paintings that reflect on history while commenting on current times.

“Though Hanright’s work mixes paint and collage while Lotus is all seen through the lens the two artists come together beautifully in this exhibit with vibrant and engaging creations and unlike Alice, you don’t have to climb through a mirror to see them,” the curators said.

The photo of a headless flamingo seemed like something only artificial intelligence could dream up. After all, the almost perfectly round, pink puffball atop two toothpick-like legs carried the hallmarks of an AI-generated image: offbeat vibes, odd proportions and missing body parts.

In fact, the picture — in equal measure absurd and lifelike — was so mind-bending that it was honored last week in the AI category of the 1839 Awards’ Color Photography Contest. But “F L A M I N G O N E,” as it was titled, wasn’t conjured by a text prompt entered into an image-generating tool. Rather, the photo features a very much real — and not at all beheaded — flamingo that photographer Miles Astray captured on the beaches of Aruba two years ago.

Astray’s entry — which had won both third place in the category and the People’s Vote award — was disqualified after the photographer revealed the truth. However, Astray told The Washington Post, “F L A M I N G O N E” accomplished its mission nonetheless: sending a poignant message to a world grappling with ever-advancing, powerful technology and the profusion of fake images it brings.

“My goal was to show that nature is just so fantastic and creative, and I don’t think any machine can beat that,” Astray told The Post. “But, on the other hand, AI imagery has advanced to a point where it’s indistinguishable from real photography. So where does that leave us? What are the implications and the pitfalls of that? I think that is a very important conversation that we need to be having right now.”

When it comes to AI-generated photos, much attention has fallen on its bizarre results: the Pope clad in a Balenciaga-style puffer jacket, a melted-face Elon Musk tanning on Mars, a flood of people with too many teeth or too many fingers. Yet the technology has also enabled the proliferation of deepfakes — images that could be used for more nefarious goals, such as upending elections or spreading disinformation. As Astray sees it: “Technology itself is not inherently good or bad. It’s how we apply it, right? So I think we really need to get ahead of that now; otherwise, it’s going to be very difficult to catch up with it.”

That’s partly what prompted Astray to engage in some trickery, which was inspired by similar stunts in recent years. But those other cases have involved AI-generated images winning photography prizes — “that’s why I approached this from the other side.”

For about two years, the 38-year-old globe-trotting photographer had been mulling over the “surreal photo of an already surreal-looking type of bird” he had shot on a pristine beach off the coast of Aruba. That sunny day, Astray had left around 5 a.m. on the first boat bound to a tiny island known for its flock of flamingos, hoping to beat the crowds. When he got there, he spotted a bright pink bird “doing its morning routine” and cleaning its feathers, he said. The “very lucky shot” captured the flamingo mid belly scratch.

Over the last few years, he thought the funny-looking bird could be the perfect medium for his AI protest, “but there weren’t a lot of competitions with the category.” Opportunity came knocking late last year when the Creative Resource Collective asked whether he’d like to enter the 1839 Awards’ Color Photography Contest, which is judged by an array of industry experts from the Centre Pompidou, the New York Times and Getty Images, among others.

“I felt bad about deceiving them,” said Astray, who added that he disclosed to Creative Resource Collective that the image was not AI-generated when the organization emailed him to let him know he had won. “And it goes without saying that they made the right decision in disqualifying me out of fairness to the other participants in that category that submitted real AI imagery.”

In a statement to The Post, Lily Fierman, director of Creative Resource Collective, said that while the organization fully appreciates the “powerful message Miles relayed with his submission,” it moved to disqualify him because Astray’s image didn’t meet the category’s requirements.

The stand-alone AI category, the first in the contest’s history, Fierman said, “was intended to be a space for artists working in this new medium. For example, we didn’t want folks who travel to the ends of the Earth to capture incredible animals or landscapes to compete with AI.”

Nevertheless, she added, “we hope this will raise awareness (and send a message of hope) to other photographers who are worried about AI.” Now, Fierman added, Creative Resource Collective is working with Astray to publish a blog post on the topic. “As an artist, his voice will make a difference in this conversation,” she said.

Astray, whose work focuses on “capturing the world as-is,” said he wasn’t expecting that positive reaction — nor the hundreds of “hilarious, thoughtful and heartfelt comments” he has received across social media.

“All those are human qualities that AI can never replicate or relate to,” he said. “I think that’s beautiful and it’s a part of that message that I initially wanted to send. Actually, all of that combined is the message.”
