St. Joseph County Library holds student photography exhibit

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – People were invited to view the works of local students at a photography exhibit on Thursday.

The “Through Their Lens” Youth Photo Exhibit features the works of middle and high school students from the Monroe Park Neighborhood.

Students were asked to photograph what they appreciate about their neighborhood. They then selected images for photo collages.

The purpose of the project was to highlight the assets of their neighborhood.

“Today is the opening reception of a photo exhibit, photos that were produced by young adults and middle and high school students in South Bend,” Gail McGuire, a doctor at IUSB. “That represents their experience on different issues. For the young adults, it is about gun violence, and for the middle and high school students who live in Monroe Park, it is about sharing their perspectives on what they think are the assets of their neighborhood.”

The exhibit runs through August 31.

Star struck: Local brothers enjoy rocket launches, photography – The Daily Reporter

GREENFIELD – The thrill of a rocket launch never gets old for two local brothers.

Noah and Luke Prail recently returned from a trip to Virginia, where they were credentialed to take photographs and videos of a supply mission to the International Space Station Aug. 1.

They set up multiple cameras before the launch, then stood more than three miles away to watch as the cameras shot remotely.

They’ve both been to multiple rocket launches in recent years, and they say the experience is awe-inspiring and a great way to bond with family and friends.

“You can feel it in your chest, it’s just that loud a very low rumble and it takes a couple of seconds to show up,” Noah said. “It’s like loud fireworks but just continuous, and better.”

“And it’s bright,” Luke added. “It hurts to look at. It’s like looking at the sun; the engines are very powerful.”

The brothers both enjoy photography and videography as a hobby. Noah, 22, is a software engineer and Luke, 19, is in document management.

The interest in rocket launches was a family affair to begin with.

“I went to a launch first with my grandparents kind of as a graduation gift,” Noah said. “That was kind of an impromptu trip where we dragged others along to Florida. The two of us really got interested and it’s very contagious we sort of spread the space obsession to the family.”

The last three years they’ve been taking trips to Florida and Virginia to see space launches live. Sometimes they’ll bring their two older brothers Ben and Caleb along; mom Ingrid Prail is also a regular attendee, and came along for this recent trip to Virginia.

They said this launch in particular was great to watch because the Antares 230 will be replaced by a new rocket. Also, the mission was the last to use Russian and Ukrainian components due to the conflict; US-built components will be used on new missions.

Last week’s spacecraft was filled with supplies to support more than 250 science and research investigations. The Prail brothers set up their cameras about 12 hours before the launch, getting between 400-500 feet away from the rocket.

When the evening launch happened, they were three miles away and relying on technology they set up to take the images and video.

“Basically, once the sound-level passes a set threshold, it starts triggering the camera,” Noah said in an email afterward. “The video cameras were triggered based on time.”

They were surrounded by dozens of other space fans that evening. This was the sixth launch they’ve been to in the last three years; sometimes they’ll watch in a large group, other times from water. Most of the launches are in the evening.

“Once you go to a launch it’s hard to not want to go more,” Noah said. “It’s the energy there, especially with the crowds; it’s very fun.”

In Tacoma, GlassFest Northwest (Aug. 12, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) celebrates the art form with live glassmaking demos, art-glass vendors and free admission to the Museum of Glass, where I recommend the current show She Bends: Redefining Neon Legacy (through Oct. 29).

On Bainbridge Island, the self-guided Summer Studio Tour (Aug. 11-13) showcases a wealth of local artisans — painters, jewelers, wood carvers and more — and their creative environments. 

In Seattle, the Wing Luke Museum is holding its annual Hai! Japantown celebration (Aug. 12, 1 – 5 p.m.), an all-ages block party featuring DJs, a Butoh dance demonstration, food booths, Taiko drumming and a music set by indie rocker Tomo Nakayama

And at Seattle Center, the Day In Day Out music festival (Aug. 12 – 13) brings a slew of bands and DJs to the Fisher Pavilion, including headliners Leon Bridges and Bon Iver and local fave Enumclaw.

Let’s not mix every thing please. There is no single user of photographic techniques; but a multitude, as for many, of the technologies invented by Man through the ages. There are many people who can claim the title of painter, from Johannes Vermeer to painters of buildings or road signs. It is the same for Photography, from the gifted creator to the anthropometric photographer, passing through scientific photographers. There is nothing honorific or demeaning about the type and mode of use, provided they are used competently and, if possible, with passion. For photographers and for the record, until recently, the list of various specializations looked more like a directory.

How can one explain the disparition of three quarters of these competent photographic operators, over the last twenty years. While at the same time, the number of individuals claiming the title of photographers has multiplied by ten or twenty, if not more. A recent survey reveals that a large proportion of young people say that for them the profession of photographer is the best profession. What a paradox! What happened ?

All the technologies related to photographic technique have evolved, are we told! Particularly grotesque reflection for all those who have a minimum photographic culture ( yes, there are still some). Since the beginnings of photography, many technological developments have followed one another, permanently, at a more than sustained pace. From the presumed start with the bitumen of Judea and its pinhole to the multilayer electronic sensor and its laser beam, the photographic corporation  has seen many evolutions and inventions. The real users of photography were and remain characters with great adaptability, effective ingenuity and an almost unhealthy curiosity. In summary, let’s not so easily blame the origin of the crisis on our equipment. Even if they become very, if not too much, sophisticated and more oriented towards a source of profit for their manufacturer than a really useful tool for their users.

The transfer of knowledge has strayed into educational business paths in which the comfort of the teacher and financial profitability are priorities. Times are changing and we have to live with the changes. Certainly, but the intellectual processes do not change, otherwise it would have been known a long time ago. Training in the mastery of know-how is done through real learning. I observe, I understand, I try, I correct, I adapt, I master, all under the watchful and pedagogical eye of a master. The works have nothing to do with the smoky theories spread out on a blackboard or emerging from a videographic screen without explanation for the errors in the realisation. Whatever the supposed prestige of the great professor and the exorbitant amount of financial participation (which, by the way, should only be symbolic if the professor is that famous!), At the end, the result might fail to be there. The only reassuring compensation is to be able to put the name of the prestigious professor(s) on one’s curriculum vitae, as the only guarantee of competence.

The users and buyers of photography are no longer the same, whether they are professionals or consumers. The functioning of our societies (due to globalization) changed the behavior of each one. It is obvious that form has swallowed up substance. Studio photography, perennial on paper, of a baby, a teenager, a graduate, practically does not exist anymore. This image is replaced by a few thousand images taken with a telephone, which are immediately ejected on social networks to disappear from the personal environment. The ephemeral videographic screen has replaced the sideboard in the dining room and the wall in the living room. Industrial photography of our factories disappeared with deindustrialization. But, essentially because a secretary with her smartphone will directly send her shot for the printing of the latest catalogue. The said catalog often limited to a pdf file, also ephemeral, on the web. If a press photographer rushes to an unexpected event, he will discover, when he arrives on site, the images already published on his smartphone. A clever witness will have filmed his dying neighbor and sent a filthy image (in every sense of the word) to the newspaper. The service editor will have made an immediate “A” to flood all possible and unimaginable networks. This type of example is unfortunately valid for all sectors that use images. No one has any more respect for the photographer while everyone dreams of doing his job and whom some even anticipate in the field, without a minimum of intellect and without scruples.

Through their frenzied individualism and their natural insouciance, photographers let their environment do its thing without any salutary reaction. It seems obvious that the – justified – proclamation of certain old photographs as works of art has softened the brains of certain view takers (all sectors combined) who already saw themselves at the top of the bill. Many are the clever ones who have also taken the opportunity to embellish the story and siphon off the income from their work and their creativity. Photographers no longer earn anything; but, it is not lost on everyone. This phenomenon is amplified by a crowd of people, totally ignorant of photography (both technically and creatively) who call themselves photographers to invite themselves on this same illusory path to glory.

All this is pathetic and particularly destructive for a technique that has been trying to gain respectability for a while. However, dear colleagues, let’s look at ourselves honestly, we are responsible of the proliferation of all these fatal excesses. We accepted anything and everything in the name of evolution and progress. Our certainty that the perfect mastery of our tools ensured the permanent continuity of our activities. Our repeated renunciations for lack of courage and anticipation lead us to the bottom of the hole. The uberization of our professions, the loss of our fundamental rights, the tolerance of devastating technologies, lead us to the hells of the new globalized economies.

“It’s the best job we would like to do” young people tell us. Obviously, they do not really understand the situation!

Neko Odyssey is a game for cat lovers you can’t miss!

Here’s a slightly unusual casual adventure game where the main gameplay centers around taking pictures of cats. The pixel art graphics in a 3D setting create a charming atmosphere reminiscent of Japanese animation.

In the game, you’ll have to search for cats in various locations throughout the town and take pictures to upload to social media (in game). Each photo you upload will earn likes from netizens. As you receive more likes, you’ll become better known, and your followers may offer tips on finding new and different cat poses.

During the cat photography sessions, some cats may require you to establish a connection with them before allowing you to photograph them. You’ll also encounter certain events that will lead you to discover new photo opportunities.

Apart from taking cat photos and sharing them on social media, the game features a main storyline where you’ll unravel the mysteries of the town based on the information you capture in your cat photos. You’ll experience excitement, cuteness, and inspiration along with the adventure in this game.

Close-up and macro photography

How to capture high quality close-up and macro photos – tips and advice on depth of field, focus stacking, macro lighting, exposure, and selecting the right camera and lens gear.

Shooting close-ups doesn’t require special equipment; almost any camera and lens (including smartphones) can be used. But only true macro equipment can reproduce subjects at life size on the sensor.

‘Macro’ vs ‘true macro’

The term ‘macro’ is often used very loosely in photography, with many people confusing it with taking close-ups. Technically, true macro photography requires the image on the sensor to be reproduced at ‘life size’ or greater; that is with at least a 1:1 reproduction ratio. (Images with a 2:1 or greater reproduction ratio also qualify as macro shots.) Anything else is simply a close-up shot.

There are also two sub-sets of macro photography: microphotography, which involves reproduction ratios of 20:1 or greater and photomicrography, which relies on a microscope. Both require special equipment that is beyond the scope of this guide.

Zoom lenses with ‘macro’ focusing seldom deliver better than half-life size magnification (a 1:2 ratio). Only true macro equipment can reproduce subjects at life size on the sensor.

Zoom lenses with ‘macro’ focusing can give you some great close-up shots; but they’re not true macro photos.

The right gear

True macro lenses have some useful characteristics that can make them worth including in your camera kit. As well as offering at least 1:1 magnification, they can also focus to infinity, making them useful for other types of shots.

Macro lenses also have flat fields, which result in good edge-to-edge sharpness, little or no distortion and few aberrations. Other lenses tend to have curved fields, which means the image can be much sharper in the centre than at the edges of the frame.

Macro lenses aren’t always easy to use. Although close-up shooting can present challenges, these are magnified when you start taking macro photographs.

The first challenge is choosing the right focal length for the task. This depends on the size of the sensor in your camera, and it determines how much ‘working distance’ you have between the front of the lens and the nearest subject.

Longer focal lengths provide a greater working distance for a given magnification. (Note: you can find the minimum focusing distance and magnification ratio of each lens in its specifications.)

Spiders in their webs are relatively easy to photograph if your lens provides a good working distance. Canon EOS 40D camera with 105mm macro lens; 1/50 second at f/9, ISO 800.

To provide some typical examples: Canon’s RF 24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM has a minimum focusing distance of 10 cm, which is very short. (It’s worth noting this lens is not a true macro lens as it only has a half life-size magnification capability.) In contrast, the RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens (also from Canon) has a minimum focusing distance of 26 cm and can deliver 1.4x life size magnification, making it a true macro lens.

Because lenses with shorter focal lengths are usually smaller, lighter and more affordably priced, casual shooters may find a small and light macro lens is more convenient than a heavier, bulkier telephoto macro lens. Shorter focal lengths can work well for totally static subjects and subjects like close-ups of flowers and other plant parts, particularly when artificial lighting is being used.

Long working distances are vital when you’re photographing creatures that are easily ‘spooked’ like small animals and insects. They also make it easier to avoid casting shadows on subjects, regardless of whether you’re working in natural light or with add-on lighting. Focal lengths between 90mm and 150mm (or their 35mm equivalents) should provide a good balance between size and weight, price and working distance.

Depth of field presents the next challenge. The closer you get to the subject, the shallower the depth of field (the region of sharp focus). This can make it difficult – if not impossible – to obtain sharp focus across the subject.

Stopping down the lens aperture goes part of the way to solving this problem. But it also reduces the intensity of the light reaching the sensor, which requires you to shoot with slower shutter speeds. This makes blurring much more likely as a result of subject movement and/or camera shake.

Putting the camera on a tripod can reduce the possibility of camera shake. But it won’t do anything to solve subject movement. Even with relatively static subjects like flowers, a slight breeze can cause enough blurring to ruin the shot; and when the subject is magnified, any blurring is magnified to the same degree.

Focus stacking

Many modern cameras include a focus stacking function that records a rapid series of shots at a relatively wide lens aperture but with changing focus distances. It relies on the camera’s built-in stabilisation plus the ability to process the shots in the camera, combining the sharpest areas in each of the shots into a single JPEG image.

Long working distances are vital when photographing small, active creatures. This image was created by photographer Chris McGinnis with an OM-1 camera and M.Zuiko 90mm f/3.5Macro IS PRO lens by stacking 16 frames with small focus adjustments. The effective focal length of this lens is 180 mm, thanks to the camera’s Micro Four Thirds format sensor.

The first cameras with in-camera focus stacking recorded a second or two of video using fast enough frame rates to reduce the chance the subject would move during the exposure sequence. The latest models have much faster image processors that can support stills capture at up to 40 fps (frames/ second), which ensures better results.

If your camera doesn’t have a focus stacking setting you can use a manual capture technique and take a sequence of exposures, changing the focus by a small amount as you move the focus point from the closest part of the subject to the furthest away. This technique only works with totally static subjects because you need time to make each focus adjustment.

The resulting stack of frames is combined in image editing software. You will probably need to consult the instructions to find out how to go about it since different programs use different settings. Some recent image editors can also stack raw files.

Success depends on your shooting technique and focusing precision. The camera should be tripod-mounted and the shutter should be triggered either via the self-timer or with a remote shutter release or a camera app.

Macro lighting

The closer you come to the subject, the more difficult it is to light it. Short working distances make it difficult to prevent your shadow falling across the subject. Longer focal lengths are easier to use.

Avoid shooting in bright sunlight, which can create harsh shadows. The best type of natural light for macro photography is a bright, overcast sky where the thin cloud diffuses the sunlight.

It’s easier to use available lighting for macro shots of flowers like this close-up of a grevillea, which was taken with a 100mm macro lens on a Canon EOS R5DS R camera. The very shallow depth of focus is due to the exposure being at 1/640 second at f/2.8 with ISO 100.

A sheet of white cardboard or crinkled foil can be used to reflect light into shadowed areas to even-up the lighting and it’s easy to cut it to shape for use in tight areas or curve it to direct the light where you want it. Both options work well with static subjects.

An adjustable desk lamp can also be used to add light when shooting indoor close-ups. Fluorescent and LED lights are the best to use since they produce less heat and their colour output is easily corrected by most cameras’ auto white balance settings.

Flash is much more challenging because you can’t gauge its effect until after the shot is taken. Some professional flashguns include LED modelling lamps to overcome this problem but they’re often large, bulky and complex as well as quite expensive.

The main advantage of flash is it allows you to shoot at faster shutter speeds than would otherwise be possible, allowing you to ‘freeze’ subject movements. But it’s also likely to scare off easily-spooked subjects and can cause temporary blindness in nocturnal animals and birds.

Interchangeable-lens camera users can choose from a wide range of add-on lighting devices at their local camera store. These include ring flashes that fit around the lens to provide evenly-distributed light, twin-flash kits and pocket lights that can be used for directional light.

Normal flash diffusers are seldom suitable for macro work because they don’t increase the size of the light source so many photographers create their own diffusers to suit their existing gear. A web search should bring up plenty of information about suitable alternatives you can produce from tissue paper, foam sheets and tape.

Exposure tips

In most cases your camera’s auto exposure modes should deliver correctly-exposed shots – assuming your subject fills the frame. But it’s still wise to use one of the semi-automatic modes: Programmed auto exposure, Aperture-priority AE or Shutter-priority AE.

Aperture-priority AE provides useful control over depth of field and is essential for taking a manual sequence of shots for focus stacking. Programmed AE allows the camera to adjust apertures automatically – but it usually selects a relatively wide aperture. (Close-up modes always set the widest possible aperture.)

Spot metering on the flower and use of an aperture of f/4 with an effective focal length of 200mm isolated the subject from the background in this macro shot.

Select the spot or partial metering mode, where possible. If you’re using a modern macro lens on a modern camera body, the exposure system should adjust the aperture when it detects the light is changing. It should also be able to account for additional lighting and adjust for flash.

The fifth annual American Indian Cultural Art Fest was recently held on the 900 year old grounds of the Aztec Ruins National Monument. Free to tourists and locals, the art fest took place beneath the trees in the picnic area of the park where potters, weavers, and jewelry makers demonstrated their craft in 100 degree heat. You’re watching the Local News Network brought to you by Pop’s Truck and RV Center, and the Big Idea Makerspace at San Juan College. I’m Hayley Opsal. The artists work quietly at tables in the shade. Florinda Vallo is a fourth generation potter from the Acoma Pueblo. The oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States. I take this little dish here and I insert it there. And that will give me the base for the beginning of my pot, which kind of will look like this. I invert it, and this is the finished product. All I have to do is let it sun dry, where this one is still in the raw stage. You can see where I added on the layer. And once I finished doing that, I will simply get a straight edge sort of a tool that I can use to scrape off the excess clay. Making that blended part disappear.

On all my pottery work is re-lined twice or three times. So to make sure the paint stays directly even on the pottery. So when you look at it, the whole pot is evenly painted with that color, and there’s no spaces or anything that are given away from it. So I simply, again, put my brush in, and I simply pull it towards me. Trying to keep the pottery still as possible, and I simply just pull the brush towards me.

Artists from various nations in the Southwest, including Zuni, Hopi, and Laguna, come to the fest each year to show, and tell, and to sell their unique pieces.

One of the first stages of making a bracelet that I’m making I hand carved. This is melted scrap silver into a mold that I create from tufa stone. You can do it out of sandstone or sand cast. This particular one is tufa cast, and then it lay out the designs out on it. So that one is not finished yet. When it’s finished, it’s going to look kind of like that.

I am starting a horse cinch weaving for a horse. And if you know anything about the cinches, it’s the belt that goes around the belly bottom that holds the the saddle in place. So I’m just barely starting it. So I’m just making my rounds back and forth using just this one color, which is black. And then later, after I’ve woven about a couple of inches, then the design will start.
