Peoria native returns home to promote new book

PEORIA (25News Now) – Peoria native Glenn Bowie made his way back to the River City to promote his new book, The Art of Speaking Into Existence. A book signing was held at the Riverfront Museum Saturday morning.

The Art of Speaking Into Existence takes us on a journey through Glenn’s life. From humble beginnings in Peoria’s Taft Homes, to life lessons learned along the way. “It’s about dreaming big. It’s about having vision and goals for your life. It’s about overcoming, persevering, being determined to make it, but most importantly never giving up on life.” Bowie says.

He adds that writing this book has been a life changing experience. “To be able to write a book and talk about it is unbelievable.” The Art of Speaking Into Existence is for anyone who is ready to dream big and tackles life’s challenges with a positive mind. Glenn hopes readers will not only feel inspired but will gain principles that lead to a life of prosperity.

Glenn currently lives in California as a speaker, author, trainer and consultant. However, there’s truly no place like home. “It doesn’t get any better than Peoria Illinois”, Bowie says with a smile. “To be able to be here at this moment is something special that I’ll always remember for the rest of my life.”

The Art of Speaking Into Existence can be purchased through his website, Glenn Bowie Speaks.

Bowie adds that a second book is already in the works.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max: Obsessing Over Photography (Premium)

We all know the story of how Steve Jobs pulled Apple back from the brink of bankruptcy and then orchestrated the biggest comeback in personal technology history by creating the iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The introduction of the iPad in early 2010 was interesting for a lot of reasons, but forgotten in all the mythology is the months-long wait between the iPad’s announcement in January and its r…

Raw and Retro: Film photography is back, baby!

Raw and Retro: Film photography is back, baby!

film photo

Over the past few years, young people everywhere have been scanning the aisles of their local drugstores for disposable Kodaks or surfing the pits of eBay for vintage film cameras. I’m no exception to the trend. The earliest seeds of my pseudo-adulthood are frozen in albums stuffed with film photos, capturing a mix of candids and “plandids” of the last three years of my life.

As this resurgence sweeps the city, Seattle’s beautiful scenery and grunge scene serve as a magnet for film photography professionals and amateurs alike.

Sarrah Khan, a sophomore, has been experimenting with film photography for a little over two years. She says that she was inspired to jump on the bandwagon after seeing many of her friends in the Seattle area fall in love with film photography.

“Polaroids and film photos started becoming trendy again online,” Khan said. “So I was looking around and found my dad’s old film camera. He got it right before DSLR cameras started becoming popular, so it’s like 20 years old and I’ve been using it for a couple of years.”

It’s interesting that this rise of film photography culture is coinciding with the rapid development of more and more advanced technology. The newest iPhone 14 boasts camera specs so complex, I can’t even begin to decrypt all the odd anagrams.

But despite this continual improvement in photo technology on our iPhones, people still seem to be drawn to classic film. Khan said that part of the allure of film photography compared to digital photography comes from the physical nature of using film.

“There’s something really nice about it being documented only in a physical form,” Khan said.

Khan also commented on the ease and accessibility of using a film camera and how her passion was formed and fueled by the photography community.

“I would say that I’m the most amateur of amateurs,” Khan said. “I’ve done the most basic research but it’s really hard to screw up. The nice thing about film photos is that they’re so forgiving and there are so many people to learn from who are eager and willing to help out, both online and personally.”

My own film journey began in a similar fashion to Khan’s. My older sister hopped onto the film camera trend a couple months before I did, and in a classic younger sibling fashion, I was in total awe of her film photos and immediately copied her as soon as I could get my hands on a camera. I quickly fell into her world, trading tips and suggestions with my sister on what brands of film are best for what kind of pictures and navigating the resources that the Seattle film scene has to offer together.

Moonphoto is a photography lab just a 15-minute drive from campus and has been in business over the past 40 years. Olivia Vick, a Moonphoto lab technician, wrote in an email on behalf of the whole Moonphoto team echoing Khan’s sentiments on the film community, adding that the visual effect of film photos is what makes them special.

“People like the color, grain, and look better compared to digital,” Vick wrote. “It’s looked at as vintage and very aesthetic to take film photos.”

According to Moonphoto, the time involved in the developing process also makes film photography more attractive than its digital counterpart. The way that it transforms the simple act of taking photographs into a longer activity makes the photographs feel more personal because of the time and labor involved.

Most Popular Stories

“The waiting process and the surprise are so fun,” Vick wrote. “It’s like a gift for your future self, like when you forget you ordered something online and it shows up at your door.”

Khan sees the process involved as a blessing and curse. She says while the developing process is what makes film photos so special, it can be a bit cumbersome to go through. It can also be a bit disheartening to finally send in rolls of film full of intimate moments only to receive pictures that are blurry, covered by fingers, or totally black. One of the more humbling moments of my life was getting back pictures from my highschool graduation and discovering that I had forgotten to turn the flash on for a solid 80% of the pictures, leaving me to interpret 25 photos of grainy silhouettes.

The Moonphoto team said the most common mistakes they see come from not having enough light in the photo.

“If you are going to shoot film, use the right ISO of film and expose it properly with aperture and shutter speed,” Vick wrote. “The next most important thing is making sure when you load film into your camera that it catches properly. We get so many rolls that come out unshot because the camera couldn’t feed the film through properly.”

But when a photo comes out just the way you want it to, the feeling that picture can hold is unmatched.

“It almost looks like a snapshot of time,” Khan said.

According to Khan, the limited number of pictures on each roll of film combined with the exclusively physical nature of these photographs create a raw and genuine form that perfectly satiates the odd nostalgia our generation craves for a time we weren’t even around for.

“I think the draw towards that is like, simpler times when things were more real,” Khan said. “Things weren’t as filtered. I feel like there’s more of an attraction now to things that are very real glimpses, or attempts of real glimpses, to show your life and of keeping interactions more raw and being able to share that with your friends and people you care about.”

Both Khan and Vick emphasized how the limited nature of film makes you reconsider what you’re capturing.

“There is something very mindful about only being able to take one shot at a time,” Vick wrote. “It makes you live in the moment more and appreciate every shot you take.”

Khan’s photographs focus on her family and friends along with her travels. She said that she chooses her subjects by thinking about what she’d want to look back on in 10 or 20 years, and her time at UW with friends is definitely something she tries to capture.

“We love seeing people’s photos and what catches people’s eye,” Vick wrote. “It’s part of what makes our job so fun, so keep shooting film, everyone.”

Indigenous People’s Day PHX Fest celebrates Indigenous culture in the present tense

Indigenous People’s Day PHX Fest celebrates Indigenous culture in the present tense

The second annual festival will be Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and includes a skateboard competition, art installation and more.

PHOENIX — When Autumn Rose Williams hears people talk about Indigenous communities, it is often “in the past tense.”

For Williams, who serves as the public relations and media coordinator for Indigenous People’s Day PHX Fest, Indigenous People’s Day is a celebration of Indigenous histories, just as much as it is a celebration of the Indigenous people who live in the Valley right here, right now.

“It is important to tell our histories, to tell our stories, and make sure we as Indigenous people are seen, heard, understood and respected,” Williams said. “Indigenous PHX Fest is really amplifying, honoring and showcasing the beauty of Indigeneity here in the Valley.”

The annual Indigenous People’s Day PHX Festival returns to the Valley for its second year Oct. 9 with the theme “Indigenize the Valley.”

Here’s everything you need to know before you go:

Starting out

As someone who has been “working since the ground up,” Candace Hamana said seeing how much the festival has grown means the most to her. Hamana is one of the co-owners of Cahokia, the Indigenous-led, Indigenous women-owned art and entrepreneur space that puts on the festival.

“Seeing how much the community has risen up to meet us and to meet our needs in this moment by way of collaboration and in kind sponsorship and community support is the most heartening thing,” Hamana said.

Cahokia PHX hosted the first festival last October, and this year are joined by the Gila River Indian Community and Becker Boards as sponsors for the festival.

Festivities

The festival isn’t the only event people can attend. This year attendees can explore a launch party and gallery event on Oct. 4 from 6-9 p.m. at the Phoenix Art Museum and an Indigenous film screening on Oct. 7 at the Burton Barr Central Library.

At the festival itself, there is a skateboard competition, a pop-up market featuring over 120 Indigenous artisans and food vendors, musical performances, a mural and art installation, and an exhibit at the Heard Museum. The festival is free to enter, but people attending are encouraged to RSVP.

This year also features the inaugural Sacred Cycle of Life Bike Tour hosted by RVSO, Heavy Pedal Phoenix and DoorDash. The ride will be Oct. 9 from 8 a.m. to noon, and pre-registration is required to participate.

Indigenous People’s Day as a city holiday

This is also the first Indigenous People’s Day that will be observed as a paid city holiday.

Phoenix declared Indigenous People’s Day a paid city holiday on April 19, 2023. City offices will be closed and city services will follow a similar pattern to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Hamana remembers getting the news alert on her phone when Indigenous People’s Day was made a paid city holiday earlier this year.

The proclamation by Mayor Kate Gallego helps indigenous tribes everywhere to feel “seen and be celebrated” Hamana said, but it was just one small, “overdue” step forward.

“The proclamation by the mayor… is giving Indigenous communities the opportunity to be acknowledged for their ingenuity and their contributions to the history that predates Arizona statehood,” Hamana said. “This is one positive step in that direction but we would like to see it more as a call to action to be recognized as a state holiday, at the very least. It’s overdue.”

Hopes for the festival

Hamana and Williams both said they hope festival goers walk away with a greater understanding of Indigenous people overall, from the history and heritage of Indigenous communities predating Arizona statehood to the Indigenous business owners, artists and neighbors in your own community today.

“There’s history, there’s stories, there’s culture,” Hamana said. “It’s not something that’s just in a past tense.”

From the film screenings and the skateboard competition to the artists and vendors, Williams said Indigenous People’s Day PHX will celebrate the stories of many Indigenous people and communities right here in the Valley.

“It is really, really important for people to really have an appreciation and respect for who we are as Indigenous people, told by Indigenous people,” Williams said.

How Kodak Could Have Ruled the Photography World

How Kodak Could Have Ruled the Photography World

It is hard to believe nowadays, but a few decades ago, Kodak was so dominant in the photography industry that the company’s name was synonymous with the image itself — the “Kodak moment.” So, why is the company a shell of its former self today? This neat video takes a look at some of the major milestones in the company’s history and why, despite being at the forefront of the industry at one point, they are almost totally irrelevant today.

Coming to you from snappiness, this great video takes a look at the history of Kodak and how it slowly became irrelevant in the photo industry. It is incredible to think that Kodak was the company that invented the digital camera, but it was that invention where they arguably first took a major misstep. In 1975, when that first digital camera was made, film ruled the world, and Kodak was hesitant to cut into their lucrative film business. And so, the company essentially tabled the digital camera, leaving other companies time to catch up and surpass Kodak’s accomplishments. By the time the company realized the need to get competitive on the digital side of things, it was essentially too late. Check out the video above for the full rundown.

NEW YORK, Sept. 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The “non-fungible token (NFT) market by application (collectibles, sports, arts, and others), end-user (personal and commercial), and geography (APAC, North America, South America, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa) – Forecast and Analysis 2023-2027″ report has been added to technavio offering. With ISO 9001:2015 certification, Technavio has proudly partnered with more than 100 Fortune 500 companies for over 16 years. The potential growth difference for the non-fungible token (NFT) market from 2022 to 2027 is USD 113.93 billion, according to Technavio. The increasing demand for digital art is a key factor driving market growth. Digital art can be defined as anything of a visual nature created using a computer. NFTs have gained traction in digital art applications through the Internet, social networks, and other digital media. NFTs link a piece of digital art through a token. The owner or artist can set the appropriate price for the NFT artwork. The key is then transferred to the end user to confirm proof of ownership. Additionally, NFTs allow for greater accessibility to the world of art. Hence, these factors are expected to drive the market growth during the forecast period. Get deeper insights into the market size, current market scenario, future growth opportunities, major growth driving factors, the latest trends, and more. The non-fungible token (NFT) market has been segmented into application (collectibles, sports, arts, and others), end-user (personal and commercial), and geography (APAC, North America, South America, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa).

  • The market share growth of the collectibles segment will be significant during the forecast period. NFT collectibles are limited edition or rare NFT tokens issued on the blockchain. Collectibles are unique and a collectible cannot be traded or exchanged with another collectible. Some vendors offering NFT collectibles include Funko Inc., Foundation, and Makerspace. In addition, the growth of the collectibles segment is mainly driven by the growing demand for digital assets worldwide. Most industries have turned to digital to market their products. The near ubiquity of the Internet and the widespread use of mobile devices and growing Internet usage have encouraged companies to expand services and investments related to digital assets. Hence, these factors are expected to drive segment growth during the forecast period.

Aboudia blindsides market experts as best-selling artists of 2022

Aboudia blindsides market experts as best-selling artists of 2022
image

Not everyone will know his name, let alone his paintings, yet Aboudia has emerged as the bestselling artist of 2022, based on the number of artworks sold at auction, to the surprise of market experts.

Aboudia, aka Abdoulaye Diarrassouba, 40, whose art is inspired by street culture in his home town of Abidjan in Ivory Coast, heads the Hiscox Artist Top 100, a new survey analysing key trends in contemporary art that will be published on Monday.

Aboudia’s work is influenced by the graffiti of Abidjan and the traditional wood carvings of West Africa, and has been compared to the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who made his name with graffiti-like images.

Since the Ivorian civil war in 2011, Aboudia’s pictures have reflected the trauma of man’s inhumanity to man with images of skulls and soldiers.

The Hiscox survey found that a total of 75 artworks by Aboudia were auctioned, followed by Damien Hirst with 73 works.

His prices have soared from a few thousand pounds about a decade ago to six figures today. Christie’s in London sold one of his untitled paintings for £504,000 last year.

Robert Read, head of art and private clients at Hiscox, said he had not previously heard of Aboudia and was taken aback by his auction success.

“But then I’m constantly surprised by things that happen, especially in the contemporary art market … That’s what makes it so exciting … Aboudia seems to be an artist that people want to speculate in,” he said.

The Jack Bell gallery in London gave Aboudia his first UK show in 2011, and the artist counts Charles Saatchi among his collectors.

Oliver Durey, Jack Bell’s director, said: “It has been great to see the level of international engagement in Aboudia’s practice increase over the years.”

The market success may reflect a rising interest in modern art from Africa, with leading western museums and galleries building up collections.

Among the survey’s other findings, David Hockney was the bestselling artist in global auction value in 2022. His sales generated $75m (£61m). His most valuable painting was Winter Timber of 2009, which fetched $23m (£19.3m) at Christie’s in New York in November.

The research was carried out for Hiscox, an international specialist insurer, by ArtTactic, a research and analysis firm.

Its findings are based on unique artworks – editions were not included – made after 2000, which have been auctioned at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips between 2018 and 2022. The research includes more than 23,000 lots from more than 3,800 artists.

The data reveals that the past two years saw a significant increase in the value of contemporary work sold, peaking in 2021 at almost $1.2bn.

It also reflected a market that has become increasingly speculative with, for example, “a dramatic increase in art being flipped as ‘wet paint’ sales”, those re-sold at auction within two years of being made, which more than doubled last year.

Read said: “We suspected that over time, the contemporary market had become more speculative, but last year wet paint sales sky-rocketed. Art is an attractive asset class for investors in the long run, but reselling within such short periods can have a destabilising effect on the market as it creates a speculative bubble.”
