Book on birth of Bureau of Indian Affairs earns award from ASU Library

Author Valerie Lambert to deliver Labriola Center National Book Award lecture

The Labriola National American Indian Data Center at the ASU Library has announced that “Native Agency: Indians in the Bureau of Indian Affairs” by Valerie Lambert is the recipient of the center’s National Book Award.

The annual award recognizes scholarship in American Indian and Indigenous studies.

The book award will be celebrated with a talk by Lambert on Monday, Nov. 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in room 204 on the second level of Hayden Library on the ASU Tempe campus. The event will also be live-streamed on Zoom. Registration is open and the event is open to the public

“‘Native Agency’ is a captivating book into the birth of the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ mission of eradicating and assimilating Native American populations and the transitional operations for the BIA to be managed by Indigenous peoples,” said Vina Begay, assistant librarian with the Labriola Center. “It is a real-tale empowerment account towards hope and healing for Indigenous communities through an Indigenous perspective.” 

Published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2022, the book explores the complicated history of the BIA, the oldest federal agency in the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Founded in 1824 within the U.S. Department of War, the BIA was initially used as a means to subdue and eliminate American Indians. In recent decades, a transformation started to occur as American Indians and Alaska Natives joined the agency.

Lambert herself worked at the BIA and provides an inside perspective of the impact that Indigenous peoples have working within a sprawling and confusing federal bureaucracy. In addition to outlining the agency’s history, her book shares a vision for how the BIA can support tribal sovereignty and Indigenous resistance. 

“Lambert’s personal experiences as a BIA employee navigates readers into the transitional phases of an Indigenous-led management team (and) into restructuring and reversing the BIA’s past catastrophic mission towards positive changes for Tribal communities through restorative justice,” Begay said.

Lambert is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina. She was raised in Oklahoma and is an enrolled citizen of the Choctaw Nation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Smith College and a PhD from Harvard University in social anthropology. 

“Native Agency,” as well as thousands of other titles by Indigenous and Native American authors are available in the Labriola Center locations at Hayden Library on the Tempe campus and Fletcher Library on the West Valley campus. The renowned collection comprises contemporary books written by Indigenous scholars, authors, artists, poets and others.

“American Indian Studies programs talk about decolonization within Western institutions, and ‘Native Agency’ provides true accounts of what that actually looks like,” Begay said. “This book demonstrates and proclaims what that decolonial and restorative justice work looks like when colonial or Western institutions give Indigenous people those spaces to lead and make decisions for the betterment of our Indigenous communities.” 

Founded in 2008, the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award is a national competition with book submissions from numerous academic presses. 

“‘Native Agency’ is a great addition and fits within Labriola’s mission in providing Indigenous scholarly works and voices; additionally, it is supplementary to Labriola’s own decolonial work in libraries and archives,” Begay said.

Sui Yang, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering in the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, was selected as one of 10 recipients of the 2023 Non-Tenured Faculty Award from 3M.

The 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award is a four-decade-old program to encourage tenure-track university professors to pursue new ideas. The award selection is based on a candidate’s research, experience, teaching, academic leadership and their proposed vision of future research.

The award provides $45,000 in unrestricted research funds to assist faculty to earn tenure, contribute to their field and foster ongoing relationships with future leaders in academic research.

Yang’s research is centered on nanophotonics, which creates artificial photonic and optoelectronic materials to control light-matter interactions for wide optical and optoelectronic applications.

Nanophotonics involves the manipulation and control of light at the nanoscale, typically at dimensions smaller than the wavelength of light. Researchers work with nanoscale optical components, such as nanoscale waveguides, photodetectors and light emitters, to harness the unique properties of light and enable various applications.

In his latest research, Yang, who joined the faculty of the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy, part of the Fulton Schools at ASU, in January 2021, proposes to integrate metamaterials with polymeric materials, with the end result being able to obtain optical film unachievable before.

Yang says that polymeric materials, or polymers, are materials with repeating units of molecules. Daily plastic commodities, mechanical parts, flexible electronics and chip packaging consist of polymeric materials that are designed to integrate into modern life by being mechanically strong, flexible, lightweight and electronically conductive. However, the optical and optoelectronic applications of polymeric materials are very limited.

“Metamaterials are a new class of materials with artificially designed structure constituents that can achieve unprecedented optical and optoelectronic properties. The integration of metamaterial structures with polymeric materials can bring a completely new dimension to our consumer technologies,” Yang says. “It will be ultra-thin, flexible and conformal optical or optoelectronic films that have never been explored before.”

According to Yang, potential uses following this integration range from areas such as flexible and lightweight display components in TVs, tablets, phones and light-ranging lidar to imaging and sensing solutions for next-generation smart cameras, augmented reality and virtual reality technologies, integrated chip systems and biomedical diagnostics.

The 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award is not the only award Yang has won throughout his young academic career, which started as a senior research scientist and manager at the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also earned his doctoral degree. He previously has won the Microsystems & Nanoengineering Young Scientist Award, the Elsevier Reaxys PhD Prize, the NKT Photonics Student Award and a Rising Stars of Light award from Light: Science & Applications.

“To have my work and contributions recognized in this prestigious award is extremely meaningful and rewarding to me,” Yang says. “It motivates me to continue striving for excellence and making a positive impact in the field.”

In memoriam: Joy Rosenthal, photography instructor

Joy Rosenthal, a longtime Virginia Tech photography instructor, passed away suddenly on Nov. 7.

Rosenthal started teaching photography for the School of Visual Arts over 20 years ago and was an integral part of non-majors class offerings for the past several years. Despite only teaching online asynchronous classes in recent years, Rosenthal often showed up to attend face-to-face openings and events. 

Rosenthal, who began taking photos in 1986 when her father gave her a camera for her high school graduation, said about her photography, “I believe in exploring and creating new means of expression.” Her art can be found on her personal website.

“She was the kindest, sweetest, warmest, most loving, most creative, and most giving person,” said Djordje Minic, Rosenthal’s husband and a physics professor at the university. They have two children, Esther and David.

On Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1:00 p.m. join photographer Mic Clinger as he presents historic panoramic images of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Through a panoramic slide show, Clinger will examine the development of this type of photography and why it became so popular. The program will take place in the Estes Park Museum Meeting Room, light snacks and refreshments will be provided. This program is free and open to the public.

Many forms of photography have showcased Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park as a beautiful place. One of those forms is panoramic photography. Based on the attraction of a medium that is at least three times wider than a normal shot, panoramic photography captures the beauty of the area. Mic Clinger is an avid photographer, and a co-author of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park: Then & Now, revised edition. He became very interested in panoramics that exists of Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park and has studied this form of photography for several years. Mr. Clinger has a background in engineering and is presently employed as a Systems Analyst.

If you’re one of the millions affected by SAD, or seasonal affective disorder, you’re probably already readying yourself for the change in sunlight as summer’s long days slowly diminish into memory. Many people affected by the condition rely upon light therapy to ease the effects. While SAD lights have been proven effective, many of these lights designed for treating the seasonally induced depression aren’t exactly the most pleasing to keep around the house out in the open. Using the app, the lights can also fill-in for the typically intrusive wail of an alarm clock, easing the body into a state of awakening incrementally.

SKYVIEW offers two models with similar specifications: 1,302 lumens of LED powered brightness, die-cast aluminum base, 80 color rendering index score (the measurement of how accurately color is rendered in relation to the output of light), each with an estimated 50,000 hours lifespan.

Mixing in warmer colors versus glowing singularly bright-blue light helps both the mind and body awaken during the day. A relaxing and warm amber spectrum during the evening hours aids in readying the body for sleep.

The difference between the two options? The $949 SKYVIEW 2 PRO is taller (20.7-inches versus 11.6-inches) and also includes a handblown glass globe rather than the lighter weight diffused polycarbonate globe featured on the $449 SKYVIEW 2 model. That’s not cheap by any means, but considering either lamp is every bit a health medical tool as they are personalizable lighting solution, it could mean the difference between feeling good daily or counting the days toward spring and summer in misery.

WINCHESTER — The main show at the Griffin Museum of Photography has an unusual subject: artist’s studios and photographer’s darkrooms. In “Leaving Their Mark: Studio Practice,” Chris Rauschenberg and Meggan Gould let us see where the magic happens, and the images can themselves be a bit magical.

Actually, the subject isn’t quite so unusual right now. “Creative Spaces: The Photographer’s Studio as Inspiration opened recently at the Museum of Fine Arts and runs through April 28.

“Leaving Their Mark” and the three other shows currently up at the Griffin run through Dec. 10.

Rauschenberg (yes, he’s Robert’s son) has 11 color photographs of artist studios. The plural applies even within each photograph, since they’re composites of multiple images. Yet those larger photographs don’t look cluttered or jumbled, despite showing several studios. The subsidiary images really do cohere within the frame — assuming, that is, the photos were framed. They’re not, nor are they matted.

The unadorned presentation complements the informality of the subject matter. (What, you thought artists’ studios would look … formal?) Unadorned and informal are especially welcome qualities, since most of the photographs are so big. “In Memory of Robert Frank,” for example, is 58 inches by 12 inches. Somehow Rauschenberg manages to make the pictures seem more inviting than imposing.

Gould’s nine darkroom photos are engaging in several ways. There’s the human angle. Each darkroom reflects the personality of its user. There’s the nostalgia angle. In our digital age, darkrooms are throwbacks. There’s the, so to speak, inside-out angle. Darkroom are about being dark, yet Gould shows them in all their clean (if not tidy), well-lighted glory. Finally, there’s the hang-out angle. These are such appealing spaces, full of all sorts of interesting things.

Like Rauschenberg’s photographs, these darkroom images are unframed and unmatted. Gould has eight other photographs in the show, from her ongoing “inksets” series. Those photos are framed and matted. They show items usually thought of as white (marshmallows, tampons, milk), yet here they’re positively candy-colored. What gives?

Gould has opened up ostensibly empty color-printer cartridges, concocted paints out of the pigments that inevitably remain inside, and applied them to those color-absent items. The “cheerfully hued, chroma-toxic” results, as Gould puts it, are both great fun to look at and a reminder of the chemical hazards we leave in our wake.

The Griffin likes to have photographers enter into a visual dialogue with work by the museum’s namesake, Arthur Griffin. The latest participant in this “Illuminating the Archive” series is Janice Koskey. She has nine photographs on display, alongside three by Griffin and one by his first wife, Claire. The common theme is nautical: dinghies, the beach, a seascape.

Eight of Koskey’s photographs are in color, which she uses to memorable effect. Sometimes it’s so lusciously saturated as to seem painterly. With “Blushing Sunset,” the veins of orange-rose she’s captured within menacing storm clouds have a quite-ravishing delicacy that recalls watercolor.

David Johnson, a photographer, and Philip Matthews, a poet, are collaborators. “Wig Heavier Than a Boot,” a marvelous title, comprises three videos, a dozen or so photographs, and several poems. Some of the photographs are landscapes. Others are character studies of Petal, a feminine persona Matthews … assumes? takes on? performs as? presents? The difficulty in settling on a verb is a reminder of how much persona is a matter of expression, and thus verbal, rather than just one of appearance and presentation.

Cody Bratt’s “The Other Stories” is a sort of family saga. It focuses on a very dark side — those “other” stories — exhibited by both his paternal great-grandfather and maternal grandfather. There are family photographs, drawings, letters, bits of text: family history as documentation, as lamentation, as indictment. Some of the photographs are torn or distressed, others Bratt has painted or drawn on. The emotional forcefulness on display is unmistakable. Yet the emotions feel inchoate and opaque.

Photographing the Collars of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

On Sept. 18, 2020, we were visiting my Aunt Esther in Kew Gardens, Queens, for Rosh Hashanah when we heard about the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. My 16-year-old daughter Emmanuelle—a queer, hard-core feminist, and mountain of emotions—could not stop crying. Even though we knew that Judge Ginsburg was 87 years old, and battling pancreatic cancer, we were still shocked. We thought she would live forever.

Emmanuelle cried for most of the F train ride home to our stop at 23rd Street in Chelsea. I tried to comfort her. We talked about how Ginsburg touched so many aspects of our lives—as a Jew, a woman, a New Yorker, a feminist, and a fighter for the issues we care about deeply: LGBTQ rights; gender and racial equality; and reproductive and parental rights. Her words, “Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation,” were brought up in discussions with my husband and children.

Ginsburg was also a daughter of immigrants, much like my own children: I moved to New York from Israel in 1995; my husband, also Israeli, joined me shortly after; and our son and daughter were born and raised in the U.S. Ginsburg’s achievements broke so many barriers, and her story held special significance for Jewish women like myself who dreamed of living a life that combined career success with motherhood—and, in Ginsburg’s case, also practicing the principle of tikkun olam, a concept in Judaism for repairing the world.

The week after her death, I felt an urge to create work inspired by Ginsburg, but I couldn’t find a way to approach it. Much of my personal photographic work has revolved around intimacy, family, motherhood, and women, but how do you capture the legacy of a personal hero? So when I was approached by Katherine Pomerantz, TIME’s director of photography, about taking on the assignment of photographing the justice’s collars for the magazine, it felt like a prayer was answered. For me, this was the equivalent of documenting a superhero’s costume, with all of the significance it held for myself, my family, and millions of Americans.

I spilled my heart out to Katherine and shared the strong connection I felt to Ginsburg’s legacy. After she gave me the assignment, I ran to my daughter’s room and we both burst into screams of joy. I asked my husband Eran, also a graduate of the photography program Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem, to help me on this shoot. This assignment was now a family affair.

It was important for me to do my own research before the shoot. I learned that Ginsburg initially started wearing these collars as a way to distinguish herself from the male justices and represent her female identity. “The standard robe is made for a man because it has a place for the shirt to show, and the tie,” she told the Washington Post in 2009. “So Sandra Day O’Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman. So I have many, many collars.” I studied photographs and videos of Ginsburg to familiarize myself with the different materials, colors, and shapes of the pieces.

On Oct. 28, Eran and I drove to D.C., arriving a day before the shoot. I hardly slept that night. There was so much I was thinking about, to be honest, and also worrying about. I would have six minutes to shoot each collar, and the lighting, exposure, and composition would all need to be perfect. There was no room for miscalculation. The next morning we arrived at the Supreme Court. My heart was pounding as we were escorted through the corridors of the highest court in the land, where life and death decisions were made, and where Ginsburg spent the last twenty-seven years of her professional life. My arrival also coincided with conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s first day. I recognized the significance of this timing. As an immigrant, I felt a sense of pride: I came to America from another country and now I was taking photographs at the Supreme Court.

I treasured every moment in the spacious room in the glorious Supreme Court building, listening to the stories about Ginsburg by those who worked alongside her. A set of drawers was rolled into the room, accompanied by a delegation of staff. There was silence in the East Conference room. We could feel the presence of the collars in that space. Each drawer held so many stories, memories, and meaning.

I got to work.

Created in 2015, the annual contest (previously) is an effort to empathize with the wildlife around us while calling to attention the threats they face. With thousands of entries from around the world every year, the deluge of delightful images serves as a reminder that animals and humans have plenty in common, from idiosyncratic personas and comical clumsiness to the Earth we share.

Before the invention of the photo camera, around 2000 years ago, a forerunner called the camera obscura was used by ancient Greeks and the Chinese. The camera obscura consisted of a dark room with a hole in one of its walls. Through this hole, images of the outside world were projected onto the opposite wall. When in 1727, German anatomy professor Johann Heinrich Schulze confirmed that the darkening of silver salts was caused by light, he further contributed to the invention of the first camera. The first-ever camera was made in 1826, after this many camera techniques emerged. Read on to learn more about nineteenth-century photography techniques.

1. Best-Known 19th-Century Photography Technique: Daguerreotype

In 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce (1765 – 1833), managed to take the first developed photograph using a technique called the heliography. The heliograph method involved holding a portable camera obscura next to a window, as to expose a pewter plate coated with bitumen or asphalt, to sunlight. After this successful experiment, Niépce began collaborating with French artist and chemist Louis-Jaqcues-Mandé Daguerre (1787 – 1851). Daguerre worked as a professional stage painter for the theatre, using the camera obscura technique for drawing. The fact that he was interested in capturing reflections, brought him and Niépce together.

After Niepcé’s death in 1833, Daguerre continued their work, using Niépce’s early experiments as a foundation. In 1839, Daguerre experienced a breakthrough and developed a pioneering technique. The Daguerreotype was born and so was the first commercially successful photographic process. Daguerre went on to introduce the technique to the French Academy and the Académie des Beaux-Arts. This event was later referred to as the birth of photography.

The Daguerreotype technique consisted of a silver-plated copper sheet that would first be polished until its surface was mirrorlike. After the polishing was done, the copper plate was kept in a dark room, where it was exposed to iodine, bromine, and chlorine vapor to form a light-sensitive layer of silver iodine. The plate would then be placed in the camera, after which it would be exposed to light for a short or long period, depending on how light the photograph was supposed to be. The longer it was exposed, the lighter the result.

Following the exposure, the plate was removed from the camera to let the image develop by exposing it to mercury vapor. After development, the plate would be bathed in a salt solution, which removed the developing compound. To protect the image, the plate was then coated with gold chlorine, before it was covered by a glass sheet and placed into a frame.

There was a downside to the Daguerreotype technique. It could only produce a single copy of an image. Making additional copies wasn’t possible. In addition, the single copy that was made represented a mirrored image of the person portrayed. A daguerreotypist could attach a mirror or reflective prism in front of the lens to obtain the right reading result. Yet, in practice, this was not often done.

Moreover, to ensure that the result of a Daguerreotype photograph was sharp at the end of a long exposure time, it was important for the posing individual to sit very still. Because of this, some Daguerreotypists made use of a head support tool, which ensured that the person’s head was kept in the same position. However, seeing that the Daguerreotype was the first commercially successful photographic technique, these aspects of its process were only minor disadvantages.

Apart from Daguerre himself, a good number of Daguerreotypists arose during the 1840s and 1950s. Among these were the French André-Adolphe-Eugène Disderí and Jules Itier, the Swiss Johann Baptist Isenring, the British Richard Beard, Antoine Claudet (a Frenchman active in London), and Thomas Richard Williams. There were also a good number of Daguerreotypists in the United States. Among these were James Presley Ball, Samuel Bemis, Abraham Bogardus, Mathew Brady, Jeremiah Gurney, Albert Southworth, Augustus Washington, and John Adams Whipple.

In most cases, these Daguerreotypists worked as portraitists, although some also took photographs of landscapes and cities. Wipple even practiced astrophotography. Seeing that the Daguerreotype cameras were large, and their process lengthy and expensive, taking them outside wasn’t very practical. However, some did it anyway and it resulted in beautiful images.

Finally, the Daguerreotype was succeeded by the wet collodion plate technique. Despite the fact that many photographers turned to newer techniques, some kept working with the Daguerreotype. Even today, there are artists who still experiment with this technique. These include Jerry Spagnoli, Adam Fuss, Patrick Bailly-Maître-Grand, and Chuck Close.

2. Calotype

William Henry Fox Talbot (1800 – 1877) was educated at Harrow and Trinity College in Cambridge. He published many articles in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and physics. He also worked as a chemist, linguist, and archaeologist. He even briefly served in Parliament from 1833 to 1834, before becoming well-known for his photographic technique. In 1835, Talbot made his first photographic negative and wrote an article that documented this discovery. However, he largely abandoned his experiments and left his photographic work untouched for a while.

A few years later, Talbot received news about the French Daguerreotype, which inspired him to continue his own research. Fortunately so, during his new experiments, Talbot found out that the chemical gallic acid, from tree galls and barks, increased the sensitivity of prepared paper and created a latent image. In other words, a latent image is an image made on photographic film or paper that remains invisible until it’s chemically treated.

It was the first process that allowed photographers to create a negative—an image in which the shades of light and dark were reversed from which multiple positive prints could be made. In addition, the gallic acid speeded up the development process from one hour to one minute. Talbot named this new invention the Calotype, referring to the Greek word for beautiful picture. In 1841, Talbot went on to patent the Calotype—sometimes also called the Talbotype—and subsequently received a medal from the British Royal Society in 1842 for it.

When it comes to the technical process, the calotype process involves five steps. The first one of these was to iodize a high-quality sheet of paper by applying solutions of light-sensitive silver nitrate and potassium iodide to the paper under candlelight. Simply said, the paper would be treated with solutions of certain salts and metals. After the first step, the paper would also be washed and dried, before its surface was sensitized by the use of another chemical solution. The third step included putting the sheet of paper in the camera and exposing it to light.

Once the desired image was captured, the paper could be removed. It was important to then brush it with the same sensitizing chemical solution to bring out the invisible image to the desired density. Subsequently, the developed negative would be rinsed with water and then washed with a solution of potassium bromide again, before laying it out to dry. The washing was important as it removed any remaining silver, and fixed the image.

Now that the negative was done, positive prints of the image could be made with the use of the so-called salted paper print process. During this process, the translucent negative would cover a new, prepared sheet of paper, that would react to light. This sheet of paper would then be put in a printing frame, which was then taken outside in order to be exposed to light. Subsequently, the light passes through the lighter parts of the negative, making these go dark in the positive image. The result was a nice, warm sepia-colored image.

Regardless of the flexibility and ease with which the Calotype photographs could be made, this technique did not replace the Daguerreotype. The quality of the Calotype image was not as fine and sharp as that of the Daguerreotype. The main difference in quality between these types of photographic techniques was caused by the difference in the material of the negative. In a Calotype, the texture and fibers of the paper were visible, which made the image slightly grainy or fuzzy. In Daguerreotype photographs, this was less of an issue thanks to the use of polished copper sheets. Regardless of this, the Calotype remained popular in England and mainland Europe. The Calotype wasn’t as popular in France, the native country of Daguerre, as well as in the United States.

Some of the best-known Calotypists were the Scottish photographer Robert Adamson and landscape painter David Octavius Hill. As Scotland was exempt from Talbot’s patent, people could freely use the Calotype here. The partnership between Hill and Adamson was formed in 1843. During this year, Hill received a commission for a group portrait of over four hundred ministers of the Free Church of Scotland. Because there were so many people to paint, Sir David Brewster, a physician who had learned about the Calotype process from Talbot himself, suggested photography to Hill. Hill then reached out to Adamson, and their partnership began. Moreover, they photographed ministers and many other individuals as well as a number of cityscapes.

3. The Wet Plate Collodion

The Wet Plate Collodion process of photography is often mentioned as the technique that revolutionized photography. It was the English Frederick Scott Archer (1813-1857) who developed the process in 1851. Archer was a butcher’s son and he began his own career as an apprentice silversmith in London. However, he ended up working as a portrait sculptor. While making sculptures, Archer began using the Calotype technique. However, Archer was not content with the result of the Calotype photos, so he started experimenting with a variety of solutions and surfaces until he discovered the Wet Plate Collodion process.

The wet-collodion process involved adding a soluble iodide (a salt) to a solution of collodion, which existed out of cellulose nitrate, a highly flammable compound. This mixture would subsequently be coated on a glass plate before it was dipped in silver nitrate to form silver iodide. Because of the fact that the silver nitrate created a light-sensitive layer, this dipping happened in a dark room. Only this way would the plate remain undeveloped. In addition, it was also important that the plate was still wet when placed in the camera and exposed to light.

Once the exposure was complete, the glass plate was dipped in pyrogallic acid, a substance derived from the gallic acid that Talbot used for his Calotype. Finally, the image was fixed by a solution of sodium thiosulfate. It was important to immediately develop and fix the treated glass plate since after the collodion film dried, it became waterproof and impenetrable by reagent solutions.

What came out of the described process was a negative which could subsequently be used to print paper positives. The latter would mostly be done with Albumen paper, which was invented by the French Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Evrard in 1850. Albumen (egg white) was mixed with ammonium chloride and spread on a sheet of paper. Photographers could buy this pre-made paper for little money and easily store it away until they were ready to use it. When using the paper, they only had to sensitize it with silver nitrate before placing it over a negative and exposing it. Wet Collodian photographs that were printed on this paper were also called Albumen Silver Prints.

Archer later came up with a modification that made the Collodion process cheaper and even more simple. Instead of printing positives, the underexposed negative was backed with black paper or velvet to make it appear positive. This modification became known as the Ambrotype and was a very popular style of photography during the mid to late nineteenth century. The same applied to a version of the Wet Plate Collodion called the Tintype or Ferrotype, of which the base was black lacquered metal instead of glass.

In general, Wet Plate Collodion photographs were valued because of their clarity and richness in detail. This way, this new technique combined the best features of the Daguerreotype and Calotype: clarity and replicability. A downside to the technique was that a darkroom tent and portable laboratory were needed for outdoor photography. Otherwise, the print wouldn’t be kept dark and wet. However, regardless of this, the Wet Plate Collodion dominated the world of photography for about two decades. It was used for tintype portraits and in the printing industry well into the 1900s.

The Wet Plate Collodion process resulted in beautifully clear images, which were either black and white, or otherwise a soft beige or taupe color. Some examples of well-known nineteenth-century photographers of the Wet Plate Collodion technique were the English portraitist Julia Margaret Cameron, the French photographer Gustave le Gray, the French photographer Félix Nadar, the Civil War and landscape photographer Timothy O’Sullivan, photographer of Western American landscapes Carleton Watkins, the British war photographer Roger Fenton, and the French portrait photographer Charles Nègre. The Wet Plate Collodion technique was used for more genres than the Daguerreotype and Calotype. During the 1860s, photography gained a documentary and journalistic function for the first time.

4. 19th-Century Photography Technique Called Gelatine Dry-Plate Glass Negative

The Wet Plate Collodion process involved the use of many chemicals and needed specific conditions to succeed. For example, the glass plate needed to be kept in the dark before use. It also needed to be wet upon exposure to light. This forced photographers to work very quickly. In response to what could be called the downsides of the Collodion process, the 1860s and 1870s saw the rise of individual experiments with other possible photographic techniques.

The main goal of these experiments was to find a dry substitute for wet collodion, which would allow plates to be prepared far in advance and developed long after exposure. In turn, this would free photographers from the task of preparing their own plates, and eliminate the need for a portable darkroom. In 1871, the English physician Richard Leach Maddox (1816-1902) came up with the idea of suspending silver bromide in a gelatine emulsion. A suggestion that formed the key to the development of the Gelatine Dry-Plate method.

Different from the Collodion wet plates, the gelatine bromide coating would dry on the glass plate, after which it could remain dry during and after exposure. For photographers, this meant that they could simply insert the plate into the camera to take a photo, and that afterward, they did not need to treat the plate with any chemicals. The fact that dry plates could be prepared in advance, led to the introduction of factory-produced dry plates in 1878. These dry glass plates were coated with gelatine containing silver salts. Subsequently, photographers could buy these commercially prepared plates in bulk. Mass production generally became possible from the 1850s onwards, thanks to industrialization. Mass production made photography cheaper and therefore accessible to more people.

Moreover, gelatine plates were sixty times more sensitive than collodion plates. The latter speeded up the process of taking a photo, which in turn freed the camera from the tripod and allowed the production of smaller hand-held ones. The Kodak Camera is a good example of this. It was introduced by George Eastman in 1888. Thanks to hand-held cameras, photographers could now move around more freely, which made it easier to photograph certain subjects and places. People also didn’t necessarily have to develop their own negatives anymore. Kodak, for example, offered a development service. They marketed their service using the tagline: You press the button, we do the rest. This led to the rise of amateur photography. The dry-plate technique remained popular until the early 1900s.

The result of the Gelatine Dry-Plate technique included images with a wider tonal range and improved image quality. Generally, the photos had beautiful, soft black-and-white or sepia shades. Some of the well-known photographers who worked with the Gelatine Dry-Plate technique were Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Gertrude Käsebier, Sarah Angelina Acland, and the founding member of the Photo-Secession Movement Clarence Hudson White.

While the 1860s saw the rise of the first documentary and journalistic photographs, photography became increasingly used for commercial purposes after the invention of the Gelatine Dry-Plate technique. At the same time, the question of whether photography was a form of art or not was also intensely debated. As a result, the international Movement called Pictorialism emerged towards the end of the nineteenth century. Pictorialism not only represented a certain aesthetic but also formulated a few principles about photography’s role as art. Pictorialists like Alfred Stieglitz believed that photography should be understood as a vehicle of personal expression that was as important as other fine arts.
