Piece Together Your Own Abstract Wall Art With the LEGO Modern Art Set

It’s safe to say we have a few resident LEGOmaniacs (or AFOLs – Adult Fans of LEGO) amongst our team. Design Milk’s Editor-in-Chief, Caroline Williamson has been dutifully piecing together an impressively detailed A-Frame Cabin set, while I’ve been staying busy slowly piecing together my own LEGO Yamaha MT-10 SP model, a set I included in my last Take 5 list. I would like to think both of our next LEGO challenges will be the LEGO Modern Art building set, a more abstract 805-piece diversion where not following directions is all part of the plan.

While LEGO does include assembly instructions with their set, including an abstract face, it would seem natural to gift one of these sets to those people in your life known to do “their own thing.” Or better yet, give people who are not typically inclined to break the rules the opportunity/permission to just piece together whatever comes to mind.

Art Market Eye | Will there be more or less work for art lawyers in 2024?

Pierre Valentin, the highly respected go-to lawyer of the art world, is starting the New Year with a completely new gig: he has set up his own law practice, after a short period with Boies Schiller Flexner in the US. “It was a tough year, as I felt responsible for taking a group of colleagues to BSF, but it has now all worked out well—some have gone solo like me, others have gone back to their former law firms.”

As well as becoming independent, he has also has joined the full service law firm Fieldfisher in London. “They welcomed me with open arms,” Valentin says. So now he is offering two services—one for, say, the individual collector or art dealer, and the other for larger companies or institutions who prefer to work with a structured law firm.

With his enormous experience of the art market to draw on, I ask Valentin if he thinks there will be more, less or about the same amount of work in the coming year, particularly with the disappointing results of 2023?

“Firstly, my take on this is that we are not actually seeing a shrinking market, but rather a shifting market,” he replies. “The market has moved geographically, away from the UK because of Brexit, and towards Europe but mainly towards the US.” And he gives as an example the recent decision by Christie’s to move certain of its sale categories, lock, stock and barrel, to Paris from London, such as Old Master drawings, design and Asian art.

Valentin continues: “For the moment I have not seen an increase in litigation except around issues with new technology—blockchain, AI— there have been a number of cases already. These are areas where the risk is enormous, and losses can be correspondingly huge. And then there is the issue of copyright, where the law is, in my opinion, no longer fit for purpose, since it was generally framed before the internet made images available to all.”

However, he then adds an important caveat: “If we have a global recession, within say 18 months or two years, then I think we will see a clear increase in litigation. I would expect cases being brought connected with the financial side of the market. For example, art investment funds or art loans. Disappointed investors might want to try to recoup their losses through the courts.”

As if on cue, this month the most spectacular feud of the decade is about to reach its (presumably) final conclusion, when a trial begins in New York, the final event of nine years of litigation. Dmitry Rybolovlev—the Russian oligarch—accuses Sotheby’s of helping Yves Bouvier, his former art dealer, to overcharge him by millions of dollars on art, notably Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi as well as works by Gustav Klimt, René Magritte and Amedeo Modigliani. Bouvier is not party to the lawsuit, having finally settled with his former client; Sotheby’s strenuously denies the charges.

Both sides have employed armies of lawyers and the documentation must run into tens of thousands of pages. For sure, art law seems a pretty safe gig, however the market behaves.

The GTA 5 Online Wildlife Photography Challenge has started for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players, and everyone is wandering around the map searching for all the animals on the list. While some like dogs and cows are easy to spot, others may need hours to find and photograph. This means a lot of wasted time and effort that can be used somewhere else.

Well, walking around the forest searching for animals is quite a fun task, but since some of the creatures can spawn across the map, players may find themselves frustrated. So, this article aims to ease the situation and provide the best locations to photograph all the animals for the event.

This will not only save them time, but also ensure that the pictures are good and that they complete the event and unlock the rewards.

As mentioned earlier, some animals can be a little tricky to locate on GTA Online’s vast map during the Wildlife Photography Challenge. So, instead of wandering, it is best to check out the areas that have the most potential of these creatures spawning. This will offer a good chance to photograph them.

You may have some difficulty locating the Cormorant in GTA Online, but simply look towards the sky and picture the pelican-like bird. They usually fly in flocks and can also be found on land.

Since the challenge requires you to travel across the map and also head down rough terrain, you can purchase the Declasse Park Ranger from the in-game store. It will unlock once you photograph at least one animal from the list. This vehicle will make exploring the wilderness much more fun and offer more immersion if you like role-playing.

In other news, the Peyote Plants are back in the game for a while, allowing you to transform into animals and roam around the map.

Erin Milez Meditates on the Joyful Monotony of Parenthood

If we looked closely at the minutia of our lives, would we take comfort in repetition? Artist Erin Milez has built her practice around monotony and domestic habits, and in her most recent solo show, she asks us to find sanctity and humor in the mundane.

Nodding to the relatable cycles of daily life, Round and Around We Go peers over shoulders and out of wardrobes to view the intimate, joyful, and sometimes exhausting experiences of parents and children. In “Caution in the Wind,” a family dressed in wool hats and puffy coats leans down, each with the same curved back, to pick dried dandelions. “The Conductor” similarly zeros in on a quiet scene depicting a mother slicing fruit and slathering peanut butter on bread, illuminated by the glow of a perfectly organized refrigerator.

Milez describes these autobiographical paintings as mandalas, an organized configuration of signs and symbols that, like a routine task, has the power to put one in a trance. Each work begins with a sketch and a small reference piece rendered in watercolor, pastel, and a mix of other mediums. The artist then works on a larger scale, meticulously filling the canvas with domestic details like a speckled bathroom countertop or the texture of a woven rug. “I wanted every inch of these pieces to receive equal attention and care, like how a mandala would, because I needed to give a moment to and reason for everything happening in my house,” she says.

As far as discoveries go, this survey of Mo Yi, the Chinese footballer-turned-photographer, is set to be standout. Accompanied by a bright yellow Thames & Hudson tome, the exhibition will incorporate Mo’s hand-made books, collages and original contact sheets alongside photography from the 1980s and 90s in an attempt to position this imaginative artist within the history of photography and Chinese experimental art. Taken rapidly like a machine gun, with the camera behind his neck or from a stick at “dogs-eye” view, Mo’s street photography is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

A master of glass, Dale Chihuly was first introduced to the material while studying interior design. “I started incorporating glass shards into woven tapestries while studying interior design at The University of Washington in the early 1960s. I loved its translucent qualities,” Dale said. “Purely by chance, I decided to melt stained glass in my basement studio and with a metal pipe, I blew my first glass bubble. That was the moment I was hooked. I spent the next decade studying and experimenting with the material and teaching glassblowing.”

After graduating, Dale enrolled in the first glass program in the country, at the University of Wisconsin. He continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he later established the glass program and taught for more than a decade.

In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, Dale went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice. There, he observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works in the studio today. In 1971, Dale co-founded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. With the international glass center, he’s led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art.

“In 1976, Henry Geldzahler, curator of contemporary art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, acquired three of my Cylinders for the museum’s collection, and that gave me the confidence to give up teaching and to focus full-time on my art,” he shared.

Dale’s work is included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide and has been shown in solo exhibitions at museums the world over. He’s been the recipient of many awards, including two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and 13 honorary doctorates. The glass artist has created more than a dozen well-known series of works, as well as celebrated for large architectural installations.

If he weren’t a renowned artist, Dale does have a few other careers in mind. “Had I not discovered glass, I think that I would have remained a weaver. I also love cinema, and when I’m not working, I spend a lot of time watching films – both classics and current material. I’ve often thought that I might have liked to be a director. I imagine it’s like the way I work with my team to create a composition.”

1. Frank Lloyd Wright Architecture

Frank Lloyd Wright’s work was ubiquitous when I was growing up and it left a lasting impression on me, especially as I started studying architecture and interior design in the late 1960s. I was honored to present my work at Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter laboratory in Arizona, in 2021-2022 and be in dialogue with such an iconic example of modern architecture.

2. Seattle’s Lake Union

My hotshop and studio, The Boathouse, is located on Lake Union, a working lake that has been inhabited for thousands of years, experiencing significant historical changes, innovations, and reinventions. I enjoy watching the working vessels go by on their way from Puget Sound to Lake Washington; it reminds me of the time I spent working on a fishing boat in Alaska to put myself through school. Having grown up in the Pacific Northwest, water is very meaningful to me and to my process – I think a lot when I’m on or in water, and it inspires me.

3. Music

I love rock-n-roll, especially music from The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other artists from the 50s and 60s. I love to play the music loud in the hotshop, and sometimes I’ll play the same song over and over and get lost in the rhythm; it allows me to really focus on what I’m doing. Music creates a great energy in the hotshop and allows us all to lose ourselves in the work. My “Hotshop Playlist” is on Spotify.

4. Collecting

I’ve been collecting things since I was a child picking up fishing floats from the shores of Puget Sound. I love to surround myself with things that I find aesthetically interesting or that have sentimental meaning. For instance, I have collections of stamps (which I’ve been collecting since childhood), cast iron door stoppers, children’s books from the 50s, carnival masks from Germany, and Native American trade blankets with intricate, colorful designs. I find inspiration and beauty in these objects.

One of my favorite collections is of vintage accordions, some of which are on display in The Bar at Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle. The accordion was a favorite instrument of my father and older brother, and they’re incredibly detailed and beautifully designed. They are among my most prized pieces.

5. Art Books + Film

I love art books and use them to adorn the walls of my Library and my Studio office – always with the cover facing front. The books in my office are all dedicated to the work of Vincent van Gogh, which I love. I was inspired to produce my own books and launched my own publishing department in 1997. Our first book, Chihuly, was released that year, co-published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Similarly, I love immersing myself in films and can watch them repeatedly. I love Scorsese and Tarantino films, and post-war American cinema such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Rear Window, To Kill a Mockingbird, Cool Hand Luke, The Graduate, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Kishin Shinoyama, who took one of the final and best-known shots of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, has died aged 83.

Japanese photographer Shinoyama spent a few days with John and Yoko in 1980 and his photo of the iconic couple kissing was used on the cover of their album Double Fantasy.

The shot would prove to be one of the very last of the pair as Lennon was murdered outside his Manhattan apartment on December 8, 1980.

Shinoyama claimed credit for directing John and Yoko’s kiss, later saying: “I think it was their happiest moment. I was fortunate to have been there and I feel privileged to have captured the moment.”

Biography

Shinoyama was born in Tokyo in 1940 and studied photography at the Nihon University College of Arts. He started freelancing in 1968 for an advertising agency and rose to prominence for his portraits of Yukio Mishima — a celebrated but controversial Japanese author who committed suicide not long after posing for Shinoyama’s lens in a series of macabre photographs.

“Time continues to die and photography is a tool to record those dying moments,” Shinoyama said in an interview with Japanese essayist Ririko Amakasu in 2014.

Shinoyama also causes a sensation after taking a series of artistic nude photographs of Japanese actresses Rie Miyazawa and Kanako Higuchi. The photos of Miyazawa sold 1.65 million copies.

He continued to explore nude photography; however it landed him in trouble when he was ordered to pay a fine for public indecency and blasphemy by a Tokyo court in 2010 after he took a series of photos of naked women in a cemetery in the Japanese capital.

The sentence prompted debate in Japan over whether the authorities impinged on freedom of expression but Shinoyama was stoic about his punishment. “I have been taking nude photos outdoors since the 1960s. But (whether the act is considered an offense or not) is determined by the mood of the time. It cannot be helped,”The Japan Times quotes him as saying. “There is no complete freedom in terms of expression.”

Shinoyama did not limit himself to just one genre: he took photos of victims of the March 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Fukushima. When asked what he was going to shoot next, he said ” “I don’t know. Ask that moment in time.”

During the 2010s he held a number of highly popular and successful touring exhibitions culminating in a large-scale exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in 2021.

He even coined the word “Gekisha” which means the act of capturing a defining moment of an iconic figure which became a buzzword in Japan.

Shinoyama died of old age on Thursday. He was married and had two sons.
