Art Solomon, a local professional photographer who chronicled Dothan’s signature Press Thornton Future Masters tournament for almost 40 years, died Sunday following a battle with cancer. He was 73.
Solomon stepped away from his work with the tournament in 2022 following treatment for a brain tumor diagnosed the previous summer. Solomon’s involvement with the tournament began in 1985 after another photographer failed to turn up for the event; Solomon, whose photo business included a processing lab, was able to photograph players and have prints ready by the time the round ended.
“Back then we used to hire high school kids to help us run over to my processing lab with a roll of film from that round and wait for it to finish, which would take about an hour or so, and then come back and do it all again,” Solomon told the Eagle in 2022.
Solomon’s civic involvement includes a stint as president of the National Peanut Festival in the 1980s; the festival named Solomon grand marshal of its parade last year.
