“Whenever I think about the future, I think about my children and the fact that I feel that the future does not belong to me; it belongs to them,” says Tawny Chatmon (previously). “The work I’m creating now is what I’m manifesting for their present and future.”

Often centering her portraiture on adolescents, Chatmon is visionary, imagining a time when children are “living in peace, being safe, being protected, being free of stereotypes, living freely and joyously, being treated gently by the world.” This dream is rooted in a long-held desire for young Black people to be recognized as inherently valuable and significant, visualized through the artist’s signature glimmering embellishments.

Reminiscent of Gustav Klimt’s works and pastiglia, or low-relief decorations, of 15th-century Italian artists, Chatmon’s Remnants and Pastoral Scenes series overlay portraits with gold leaf, acrylic paint, semi-precious stones, and other mixed-media. The gilded additions often cloak garments and sometimes the backdrop, while the works retain the original photographic depiction of the sitter’s face and limbs.

Remnants contains cut-and-pasted scraps from the artist’s early paintings, and Pastoral Scenes positions the figures against distant landscapes. Both series, though, honor ancestral ties and emphasize the need to break free from outdated modes of being. “My work is a beautiful resistance simply because it exists,” she says. “Existence, by definition, is the state of being alive or being real, and despite early depictions of Black bodies as background or ‘other’ in Western art, while primarily centering whiteness, we are real. We always have been.”

“Iconography/In honor of the sacred divinity that exists within us” (2023), 24k gold leaf, paper, acrylic on archival pigment print, 47 x 35 inches

Chatmon takes a similar approach in her ongoing Iconography series, which evokes Byzantine-era works that depict religious figures through dense mosaics. “These visual declarations were used to assist the observer in focusing on all things sacred and were viewed more as literal prayers than art. Believed to serve as conduits to the divine, each was meticulously crafted by an iconographer embarking on a journey of prayer and meditation,” she shares.

Her pieces draw on this tradition through swaths of gold tesserae that transcend the earthly. In “A Hopeful Truth,” Chatmon fashions flowing, metallic garments for two young girls, who embrace in front of a tiled backdrop with blue, floral filigree. Another work, “In honor of the sacred divinity that exists within us,” features the artist’s daughter wearing a robe draped over her shoulders and a gown with a portrait of Harriet Tubman near her heart. “Just as Byzantine icons serve as windows to the spiritual realm, may my icons serve as means of sending gratitude to our ancestors and a connection to those who helped shape our lives throughout history,” the artist says.

And the devotional nature of these early Roman works isn’t lost on Chatmon. For each piece, she pre-determines what she’s hoping to communicate and when complete, considers “what I want the work to do once shared with others by saying a prayer over the work and setting intentions.”

Chatmon currently has a limited-edition print available through Art + Culture to support The Last Resort Artist Retreat, a residency for Black creatives. She also has work in several exhibitions opening in the coming weeks, including group shows at Galerie Myrtis in Baltimore, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, and Florida State University’s Museum of Fine Arts. You can follow her latest endeavors on Instagram.

Some of the Most Important Photography Advice You’ll Ever Hear |

Some of the Most Important Photography Advice You’ll Ever Hear |

As photographers, we are bombarded by information from all directions on a daily basis, and it can be tricky to know how to cut through it all to the advice that really matters. Whether you are a professional or a hobbyist, if you want some important lessons that will put you on the right track to finding success and satisfaction in the craft of photography, check out this fantastic video essay that discusses such ideas.

Coming to you from Steve Carty, this great video essay provides a range of advice and insights about how to find success as a photographer. Two bits of advice that I found particularly important were having confidence in yourself and pushing yourself to keep exploring and mining your creativity. When you take the shot you want and get that rush of satisfaction, it is a great (and deserved) feeling, but now that you have what you need, why not experiment a bit? Getting comfortable can often lead to stagnation as an artist and a lack of long-term satisfaction. Of course, if you are a professional, you need to ensure you’re delivering what your clients want, but be sure to set aside time for yourself to explore as well. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Carty.

Scaling your drone photography business is a learning, innovation, and dedication journey.

FAQs: Drone Photography Business

Do I need a license to start my own drone photography business?

Yes, in many countries, operating drones for commercial purposes requires a license. For example, in the U.S., commercial drone pilots need to have a Remote Pilot Certificate issued by the FAA. You may also need to find drone photography business names that aren’t taken and register the name with your state.

What is a Remote Pilot Certificate?

A Remote Pilot Certificate is a certification issued by the FAA that permits individuals to operate drones for commercial use. It ensures that the operator understands the regulations, operating requirements, and safety procedures for drones. To obtain one, candidates must be at least 16 years old, pass an initial aeronautical knowledge exam, and undergo security vetting by the TSA.

What type of drone is best for a drone photography business?

The best drones for your business depend on your specific needs and budget. Popular choices include the DJI Phantom 4 Pro for its superior image quality, the Autel Evo II Pro for its 6K camera, and the DJI Inspire 2 for cinematic shoots. For those on a budget, the Parrot Anafi is a worthy consideration.

How much can I earn from a drone photography business?

Earnings can vary widely based on factors like location, skill level, equipment, and specialization. On average, drone photographers can charge between $100 to $500 per hour. Specialized shoots, like real estate or weddings, can garner higher rates.

How can I attract clients to my drone photography business?

Build a robust portfolio showcasing diverse shots, network within the industry, leverage online marketing, maintain an active presence on social media platforms, and consider email marketing campaigns to stay in touch with past clients.

What role does the Federal Aviation Administration play in drone photography?

The FAA oversees and regulates drone use in the U.S., ensuring safe skies for all. This includes setting rules for drone operations, defining no-fly zones, issuing licenses like the Remote Pilot Certificate, and updating safety regulations.

What type of insurance do I need for a drone photography business?

It’s advisable to get liability insurance for your drone photography business. This protects against potential damages your drone might cause during operation. Some clients may also require proof of insurance before hiring your services.

How much should I charge as a drone photographer?

Pricing depends on factors like location, experience, equipment, and the type of shoot. Research local drone photographer rates, consider your overheads, and adjust accordingly. As a reference, rates can range from $100 to $500 per hour or more for specialized shoots.

Does Drone Photography sell?

Absolutely! The unique perspective provided by drone photography has made it increasingly popular in various sectors like real estate, tourism, events, and more. Its ability to showcase landscapes, properties, and events from a unique vantage point makes it a sought-after service.

How are drones used in real estate photography?

Drones offer an unparalleled view of properties, allowing potential buyers to see the full scope of a property, its landscape, and its proximity to other landmarks. Aerial shots can showcase the beauty of a property, highlight its size, and even show off the surrounding neighborhood, giving buyers a comprehensive view and potentially impacting their purchasing decision.

Shaping the future of photography: The next evolution of Luminar Neo

Shaping the future of photography: The next evolution of Luminar Neo

New York, NY — Aug. 8, 2023 — Skylum, a leading innovator in photo editing software and the company behind the award-winning program Luminar Neo, announces a significant milestone in the evolution of its core product that will release in the coming months, taking creators’ editing capabilities to the next level. The cornerstone of this update is the introduction of generative AI technologies being integrated into Luminar Neo.

As one of the first movers in this domain, Skylum is determined to lead the way toward a future where AI-assistive photo editing becomes second nature, saving photographers precious time previously spent on mundane tasks that can now be dedicated to exploring the world and their creativity. The profound impact that AI has already had on all creatives is undeniable, and Skylum is proud to be at the forefront of this transformative shift, with a firm belief that AI should always serve photographers, not replace them.

To illustrate that, Skylum’s announcing an impressive array of new AI-assistive tools designed to streamline
photographers’ challenges with scene manipulation, removing unwanted objects, and expanding the canvas of a photo. Here is what Luminar Neo users can expect this fall.

  • GenErase: A next-generation Erase tool that not only removes unwanted distractions from your images but also replaces those areas using content-aware tools, providing a focused and distraction-free composition. This feature preserves the integrity of your photos by intelligently filling in the gaps with textures and other elements to match the surrounding area. GenErase can seamlessly remove objects like trash, street signs, vehicles, graffiti, and more to preserve the beauty of the composition.

  • SceneExpand: This tool enables users to extend the boundaries of their photos, adding a new dimension to original compositions. Whether creating panoramic landscapes or adding breathing room to favorite images, SceneExpand offers the ability to break free from traditional aspect ratios and unlock new creative possibilities.
Luminar Neo scene expand
  • SceneSwap: Let users replace specific elements (such as the sky or foreground) with high-quality AI-generated visuals that blend seamlessly with the rest of the photo. Imagine a stunning sunset replacing the dull, overcast sky or crystal-clear azure waters instead of a murky pond in your photos.

  • Water Enhancer: Designed to enhance water features in aquatic scenes, giving landscape photos greater visual impact.

  • Studio Light: A creative tool for portrait photographers that faithfully replicate lightning effects usually achieved with expensive technical equipment in the studio and breathes new life into older photos. With Studio Light, creators can easily add a whole new dimension to portrait photos.

“As photography keeps evolving, AI should be seen as an opportunity and not a threat. Think about what makes a photo special — the creative ideas behind it, the personal touch, the experience of taking that image. AI cannot replace any of those things, but it can serve as a powerful assistive tool to expand the realm of photography, making it easier for everyone.”

Ivan Kutanin, CEO of Skylum

As part of the commitment to keep Luminar Neo intuitive and easy to use, Skylum will also debut a Refreshed UI Design and Navigation. This update addresses user interface fatigue and usability issues, as well as improves the overall user experience. The improvements will address some of the most common challenges with photo management and interaction with the app, making your experience using Luminar Neo even more intuitive and enjoyable.

With this update, Skylum’s bringing next-generation AI-powered photo editing technologies, new post-processing tools, and a host of UI/UX improvements, making Luminar Neo better than it has ever been.

Availability of the next evolution of Luminar Neo

Platform upgrades and generative technologies will be available to monthly and annual Pro, Explore, and Ultimate plan subscribers. Studio Light will be added first to the software in the next release within a month, and the rest will be gradually incorporated over the following months this fall.

Existing Luminar Neo lifetime (perpetual) license owners can opt to switch to the Pro subscription at an early bird rate ($49 for the first year), or they can make a one-time purchase of the 2023/24 Creative Journey Pass for $39 (early bird price). This pass will grant access to generative technologies until Aug. 16, 2024, as well as all new features announced and released before that date, except Extensions.

Seminole artist brings authentic textiles and ceramics to Sarasota museum

In her village, women wore clothing with functional lengths, layers and ruffles to keep ticks and other bugs at bay. She imagines the FGCU skirt as something a current student might wear, much like the lightweight ribbon skirt she wears during an interview at the exhibit, which her grandmother made and wore in the 1980s.

She contrasts the comfort and versatility of ribbon skirts to the elaborate ballgown she made especially for the exhibit that celebrates the circus roots of the museum’s founders, John and Mable Ringling. A hoop skirt under the gown holds the floor-length skirt away from the legs, creating a dramatic silhouette.

“Goodness knows what would have crawled up underneath a skirt popped out like that in the village,” says Osceola.

According to her, the gown’s rows of red blocks on a white background are symbolic of the telephone poles along Tamiami Trail that replaced pristine sections of the Everglades but brought a means of communication. Thin strips of bias tape and rickrack trim convey the idea of communication lines. Those lines also symbolize The Ringling, as Osceola pictured the high wires traversed by circus trapeze artists.

She notes that her Everglades village would have been too harsh an environment for such a long dress. “We would never have worn a ballroom gown in the swamp,” she says.

For Osceola, exhibitions like this are important for Indigenous communities and the art world. “Maybe these look like ‘just’ textiles to somebody, which in the art world isn’t often viewed as important, so I’m grateful to FGCU and The Ringling for finding value in this.”

“It’s how we keep going forward with it,” she adds.

An honest depiction of elder sex: Marilyn Minter’s best photograph

My book Elder Sex came out of an article about sex after the age of 70 which was published in the New York Times magazine in January 2022. It’s all the pictures that the Times couldn’t publish. For instance, they couldn’t show any vibrators. America is a puritan country, remember? We have all these uptight evangelicals here.

All the friends I asked said no to posing, because there’s so much contempt for the subject of elder sex. It’s treated as a joke. So the Times did the casting call and I picked my models from that. I wanted real bodies, and I tried to get every race and every size. They had thought about using professional models but – how do I say this delicately? – the models just didn’t look their age. So we used actors, which also meant they could convincingly act intimate and in love.

I’m 74, so they were all just a few years older than me. I wanted to make them look good. They’re not perfect bodies, but this is everybody’s future, and I wanted to show it is not this dismal, barren place. Sex is a natural human instinct that doesn’t go away.

My thoughts when approaching the project were that, first, in all of history, people have never before been so healthy at that age. Second, people didn’t have Viagra before. And third, there has never been such easy access to sex toys. In Walmart recently I saw male vibrators in the cosmetics aisle – it blew my mind.

Our models were all in lingerie. The Times wouldn’t have let me shoot them naked – but then most people play dress-up on a special night or afternoon. The interesting thing – and it came as a real shock – was that all the signifiers of ageing just didn’t exist in the close-ups. I had to make sure to include their neck and hair, just so you could tell they were in their 70s. Where you age is your neck, your hands and your thighs; the parts that haven’t been in the sun looked young. Most of the women’s boobs and their butts weren’t wrinkled at all. Especially if they were people of colour. I had to make them push the skin to get wrinkles!

In the article, a lot of people said that they are currently having the best sex they’ve ever had. Having been together for a long time, they know what pleases their partner and what pleases themselves, and they don’t give a shit any more about being performative.

When the models all arrived at the studio I told them that they were going to be pioneers and we were giving permission to people not to reject their sexual feelings. The only caution was tripping over all the different electrical cords, but nobody did. We shot over five days and we had so much fun. It was one of the easiest shoots we’ve ever been on; we all said it.

I shoot behind glass a lot. I think the distortion creates metaphor; there’s a mystery to everything I shoot. I have a team I’ve worked with for 15 years: one person jets the steam, another two do the wipes. I point to where to wipe on the glass, and then I only have about six seconds to shoot through it before it steams up again. And my subjects really can’t see me at all, so they’re not self-conscious. I know it works because I’ve been shooting portraits this way for years. I can find the unguarded moment all the time.
