Historical Art Center On OU Campus Calling Native American Artists For Art Exhibition

Historical Art Center On OU Campus Calling Native American Artists For Art Exhibition

A historical art center in Norman is making an open call for Native American artists. Specifically, artists from Oklahoma tribes.

The Jacobson House Native Art Center on the University of Oklahoma campus had an extended closure due to the pandemic and renovations. The staff wants the public to know they are still there and better than ever.

A piece of rich Oklahoma history in the heart of Norman.

“It all started kind of right here, ”Jacobson House Native Art Center Board Chairman Brent Greenwood said. “Has a special place in my heart.”

Brent Greenwood’s art career along with many other Native artists started at the Jacobson House Native Art Center.

“So yeah, this is over 100 years old,” Greenwood.

He wants to help kickstart other careers through the center’s Fall art show dubbed “Twenty-First Century.”

“Some are going to be from the early 2000s and some will be from last month,” said Greenwood. “To see that gambit of narratives and expressions is going to be really cool.”

Greenwood said so far, they have 15 artists representing Oklahoma tribes on board for the art show. However, he would like to have artists from all 39 tribal nations. Greenwood’s other goal is to put the art center back in the spotlight of the community. The historical building recently underwent a major renovation and facelift.

“OU reinvested in the house and did major upgrades,” Greenwood said.

Greenwood is ready to showcase the art that made the center locally famous and keep the tradition alive for years to come.

“That’s what I want this to be for our people,” Greenwood said. “A sense of place, self, and community.

The open call for Native artists ends Aug. 30, and selected artists will be notified by Sept. 3. Contact the Jacobson House Native Art Center for more details.

‘Hasselblad Ballet’ Celebrates Beauty of Dance and Analog Photography

‘Hasselblad Ballet’ Celebrates Beauty of Dance and Analog Photography

David Teran - Hasselblad Ballet

Fine art portrait photographer David Teran traveled the world with his 1969 Hasselblad 500C/M camera to capture beautiful black and white portraits of some of the most talented and powerful ballerinas. Teran has launched a Kickstarter campaign to celebrate the multi-year project to release a special book, Hasselblad Ballet.

“Over the past five years, I’ve taken from Hasselblad camera from 1969 around the world and photographed some of the most extraordinary ballerinas in 19 different countries using only one roll of Ilford black and white film,” Teran says.

“Drawing inspiration from the ballet world, David has meticulously curated an enchanting and sublime collection that showcases the grace and elegance of ballerinas from various countries around the world. David has crafted a visual masterpiece that pays homage to the artistry of both photography and ballet. Just as a ballet performance captures the essence of movement, David’s photography captures the heart and soul of each ballerina, creating a captivating narrative that unfolds with every image,” the Kickstarter campaign explains.

Teran describes his project as showcasing ballerinas in a quirky and whimsical way, bringing the talented dancers outside their typical studio surroundings and placing them in beautiful locations worldwide.

“Creating Hasselblad Ballet has been a true labor of love. This project has allowed me to combine my passion for photography (and food!) and the beauty of ballet in a way that is both unconventional and unique,” says David Teran.

The book features over 100 ballerinas photographed in 53 cities across 19 diverse countries. Teran worked with famed ballerinas such as Isabella Boylston from the American Ballet Theater and dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, The Royal Danish Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, and many others.

Teran worked alongside Sofiane Sylve, the renowned artistic director of Ballet San Antonio, Teran’s hometown.

There is also an interesting juxtaposition between the speed and agility of ballerinas and Teran’s choice of camera. Unlike modern digital cameras, the Hasselblad 500C/M is a relatively slow camera that requires careful consideration for every shot.

The Hasselblad 500C/M, like other 500 series cameras, has played an important role in photographic and human history. Hasselblad 500C cameras have been into space. NASA astronaut Walter Schirra took a 500C aboard the Mercury rocket in 1962, making the Hasselblad 500C the first camera to “properly document space,” per Hasselblad.

Teran joins an illustrious group of photographers who have created art with Hasselblad 500-series cameras. Ansel Adams, Sid Avery, and Gered Mankowitz are just a few who have used 500 cameras to capture landscapes and portraits.

Teran’s all-or-nothing Kickstarter campaign is essentially a pre-sale for Hasselblad Ballet, with early bird pledging options for the book starting at $75.

A Limited-Edition Box Set option for $250 includes a signed copy of the book inside a linen cloth clamshell box. It also includes a handmade gelatin silver contact sheet. Each one-of-a-kind sheet has Teran’s darkroom markings, offering purchasers a look at the analog photographic process.

Additional backing options include digital phone backgrounds, a Hasselblad Ballet t-shirt, and limited-edition prints. All backing options and complete campaign details are available on Kickstarter.

If Hasselblad Ballet reaches its $33,400 campaign target, the book will begin shipping in May 2024. As of writing, the campaign, which started today, has earned just over $4,000 in funding. The campaign ends on September 20, 2023.

Photography + Review: Ed Sheeran and John Mayer

Photography + Review: Ed Sheeran and John Mayer

Posted: 15th August, 2023 by The Editor

Ed Sheeran is selling out stadiums all across the country to support his latest and final album in the “Mathematics” series, – (Subtract).

While Khalid was originally the direct support for this tour, an unfortunate car accident forced him to miss this leg of the tour while he recovered. Ed announced the morning of his first show in Massachusetts that John Mayer would be opening the show that night. A Friday evening, with one of our favorite artists, leading into a holiday weekend? A perfect trio.

Unlike most stage setups, this tour has the main stage directly in the center of Gillette Stadium and fans packed in all around without a bad view in the house. John Mayer promptly took the stage at 7pm and shared how thankful he was that his friend Ed asked him to open. Despite being in the middle of Dead and Co. tour, Mayer rerouted his flights to ensure he could be there. John Mayer sells out arenas around the world, yet here he was in front of thousands of adolescent Ed Sheeran fans who had no knowledge of who he was. To win over the new fans watching his set, he kicked off his set with acoustic renditions of “No Such Thing”, “In the Blood”, and “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” (and yes – he sang the bitch line instead of the crowd this time). At the halfway point of his set, John pulled out his acclaimed cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin” that much of the audience was able to sing along to. To close out his opening set, he played “New Light” from his latest release Sob Rock and his infamous acoustic rendition of “Neon”.

Ed Sheeran rose from the center of the stage at 8:30pm and showed off the tricks that his intricate stage setup was hiding. It featured a conveyor belt that moved him in a continuous circle the whole night so everyone in the audience could see him properly. Starting with full band songs like “Tides” and “BLOW”, Ed had the crowd ecstatic in no time. He swiftly moved into his signature solo set with an announcement that there were no backing tracks in use and everything was live looped with his custom looping stating. We got to hear his hits “The A Team”, “Castle on a Hill”, and “Eyes Closed” inside of this seven song solo section before bringing his full band back out. This second full band section featured a guest violin player during “Galway Girl” immediately before Ed brought John Mayer back out to play “Thinking Out Loud” together, a moment truly unique to this night of the tour. To round out his 25 song set, Ed played another stretch of solo songs that featured a cover of Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself” (though is it a cover if Ed wrote it and sold it to Justin?) before exiting the stage. It wasn’t long until the 70,000 members in attendance cheered for an encore and Ed returned to play “Shape of You” and “Bad Habits”. While the remaining dates of the tour will see the original lineup of Ed Sheeran and Khalid, it was incredible to witness the special occasion of John Mayer and Ed Sheeran playing Gillette Stadium together.

A Group of Collectors Is Suing Sotheby’s Over Its ‘Misleading’ Marketing of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs

A Group of Collectors Is Suing Sotheby’s Over Its ‘Misleading’ Marketing of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs

Sotheby’s is the latest addition the list of defendants in an ongoing class-action lawsuit over an alleged scheme to bilk investors in non-fungible tokens. Plaintiffs accuse the house, alongside the creators of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and a pack of A-list celebrities, of deceptive practices relating to their marketing and sale of NFTs, according to an amended complaint filed with the Central District Court of California on August 4.

The suit claims the auction house colluded with Yuga Labs, creator of BAYC NFTs, to allegedly inflate the value of the colorful NFTs of illustrated apes, which were among the most sought-after digital assets before the crypto market crashed last year.

The allegations revolve around an online auction that took place in September 2021, where Sotheby’s raked in $24.2 million for the sale of a lot featuring 101 BAYC NFTs, far exceeding the presale estimate of $12 million to $18 million and setting a new record for crypto art at the time.

However, in its promotion leading up to the sale, the auction house allegedly claimed that legacy art collectors had begun tapping NFTs, part of what the plaintiffs characterize as an effort to build up an aura of legitimacy to the digital tokens. The suit accuses Sotheby’s of being “deceptive,” alleging that the house had “misleadingly created the impression that the market for BAYC NFTs had crossed over to a mainstream audience.” The plaintiffs also accused the house’s representatives of downplaying the possibilities of an NFT market bubble.

Sotheby’s continued to drum up the hype after the sale, the suit claims. Max Moore, Sotheby’s head of contemporary art auctions, allegedly revealed in a Twitter Space conversation on September 9, 2021, that the winning bidder on the BAYC NFT lot was a “traditional” art collector, when in reality it was the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, according to Ethereum blockchain transaction records.

FTX spiraled from being the world’s third-largest centralized cryptocurrency exchange in mid 2021 to filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2022.

Michael Bouhanna, the house’s co-head of digital art, told ARTnews after the 2021 sale “a growing number of traditional art buyers getting interested in NFTs,” but Sotheby’s did not disclose the identity of the buyer.

“The allegations in this suit are baseless, and Sotheby’s is prepared to vigorously defend itself,” Sotheby’s said in a statement to Artnet News.

The lawsuit, which was initially filed in December, also names Yuga Labs and A-listers including Madonna, Paris Hilton, Justin Bieber, Jimmy Fallon, and Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann as defendants accused of defrauding investors. The suit alleges Yuga Labs made paid celebrity endorsements appear organic, which artificially boosted NFT prices.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation of more than $5 million before costs and interest.

The case is no. 2:22-cv-08909-FMO-PLA.

Today’s Photo from Ted Grussing Photography: Two to Share

… a couple of portraits tonight … above one of my favorite bobcats which spent some time visiting with me as I collected hundreds of shots of him … a shared life even if for just a few minutes … he knows where and what his place in all that is, is. For me, the wonder only grows as certainties become what they always have been … uncertainties.

And the shot below is a portrait of one of the coyotes that inhabits the area too … another creature that knows his place in life … perhaps it is about the struggle to survive and the necessity to work for what we get … the struggle to make it in the real world with eyes wide open … reality without distraction of games and silliness. and the confidence knowing that we create our own security and self-worth.

Another fun day … time with friends and the ever-present search for whatever is out there!

Dates have been set for my next shows: 7:30 PM September 22nd at the Smothers Theater on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. If you live in the area. The Mary Fisher Theater in Sedona, Arizona on October 21 at 7:00 PM (not yet on the website calendar.)
Dates and times for November and December will be out soon … if you would like to book a private showing please let me know what you would like.

Have a beautiful day … keep breathing and share the joy you find in life … you can’t go wrong with that!

Cheers,

Ted

When I wander in places of greed for gain I have
no desire; the grass of the meadow and the stars
of the night comfort me. Though darkness overcome
me, I shall not despair; the God of my youth still abides.
with me. He showeth me the palaces of the rich and
the haunts of the poor, yet keepeth sweet my soul.
When weariness overtakes me, I lie down in slumber,
and the peace of the world is upon me. Though poverty
abide with me, I pray that courage and gentleness
forsake me not. And with all living things out of this
earth and out of other worlds believe I shall grow
in the fields of God forever.
