New Chinese photography exhibition opening at Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A new exhibition is now open at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art.

It’s called “From Grain to Pixel: Contemporary Chinese Photography” and it showcases 37 works by 14 Chinese artists, which were created between 1993 and 2006.

“From Grain to Pixel illustrates an exciting transition in the use of photography for self-expression in China. For these artists, photography served as a powerful media to reckon with their placement within a very charged and pivotal moment in history,” said Demecina Beehn, MGM Resorts Director of Art & Culture. “Through this exhibition, we celebrate these preeminent conceptual artists of China and their trailblazing work in photography.”

Guests will start their journey through a gateway with paper lanterns, vines, and gold chains. There is also a light box illuminating a distance landscape. Guests are encouraged to personalize and tie their own wishing tag to the golden chains, leaving behind aspirations for the future inspired by their visit.

You can see works of art by Cang Xin, Cui Xiuwen, Hai Bo, Hong Hao, Hong Lei, Huang Yan, Qui Zhijie, RongRong, Tong Dazhuang, Wang Qingsong, Weng Fen, Xing Danwen, Zhang Huan and Zhang Peili.

The exhibition runs through October 6 and the gallery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tickets. are $18 for adults and $15 for Nevada residents, seniors that are 65 or older, students, teachers, and members of the military, with a valid ID. Children five and younger are free.

Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra is going to be a game-changer in smartphone photography. Ice Universe, a well-known tipster, recently spilt the beans about the Galaxy S25 major upgrade.

Tech circles are abuzz with the fresh leak that reveals potential upgrades to the device’s camera setup. According to the tipster, the company is seeking a significant overhaul in the camera department for Samsung’s upcoming flagship.

According to renowned tipster Ice Universe, the Galaxy S25 Ultra might sport four rear cameras, a departure from the five-camera setup seen in its predecessor. What is catching the world’s attention is the possibility of two cameras with larger sensors and higher resolutions.

Quoting a “quite reliable” source, Ice Universe said the upcoming flagship device will have a whopping 200MP primary camera paired with a large 1-inch sensor, alongside a 50MP ultrawide lens, a 50MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and another 50MP super-telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.

And that’s not all – the 12MP camera is also expected to level up to a 50MP ultrawide camera in the S25 Ultra.

This potential upgrade is going to be a remarkable leap in smartphone photography capabilities. The speculated 200MP primary lens, coupled with a substantial 1-inch sensor, could revolutionise mobile videography, possibly enabling seamless 8K video capture.

Samsung always rises to the expectations of its consumers regarding camera innovation. However, details about the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus are scarce. The buzz says that Samsung will introduce a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip promising enhanced AI features. Hence, the S25 series will raise the bar in smartphone performance.

Waterville first responders highlighted in ‘Pride In Duty’ photography exhibit

A recent Colby College graduate and firefighter highlighted Waterville Fire and Rescue in her senior art exhibit.

WATERVILLE, Maine — A recent Colby College graduate, who is also a firefighter, highlighted Waterville Fire and Rescue in her senior art exhibit.

You may have heard the adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

Studio art major Morgan Cheney embodied this by capturing the day-to-day of first responders at Waterville Fire and Rescue.

“This exhibit is actually called ‘Pride In Duty.’ That is the mission statement of the Waterville Fire Department,” Cheney said.

Cheney used a Sony digital camera and her dad’s film camera, which he used when he was in college, for her capstone project which was on display at the Paul J. Schupf Art Center.

“I’m in the fire department, but I’m also a photographer,” Cheney said. “I think I had a very special role in that I can capture the relationships that I have with those people through the camera and sort of create a more raw feeling to the pictures and sort of give that connection to the viewer.”

Cheney wanted to use this project to shine a light on the people she looks up to.

“The people that I was training under were such great role models. I wanted to show the world the role models I had and for them to see also the people who are helping them on the worst days of their life,” Cheney said.

Cheney started at Waterville Fire and Rescue two years ago as an EMT but has been a firefighter for the past year.

Waterville Fire Chief Shawn Esler is proud of Cheney’s hard work.

“When she chose the fire department, specifically ‘Pride In Duty’ as her project, we felt extremely honored,” Esler said.

For EMS Deputy Chief Everett Flannery, the exhibit felt very authentic. 

“Looking at the photographs, it just elicits raw emotion,” Flannery said. “A lot of the shots, people didn’t know it was happening so it’s very real.”

Each picture shows the humanity behind first responders.

“We’re all human, yes we all work 24-hour shifts,” Cheney said. “Sometimes we see not-so-great things, but the people we’re surrounded by in the firehouse make it the place that it is.”

The exhibit also shares a glimpse of a job that can be hard and demanding.

“Her work really sheds a [light] on the strong work that goes into training, and operational readiness to make sure we’re prepared to respond to emergencies,” Esler said.

Cheney has pride both in her final college project and in her second family at Waterville Fire and Rescue.

“I wanted to keep that connection going of every time that we step into the fire department and we’re going to work, we have pride in what we do,” Cheney said.

The exhibit “Pride In Duty” is no longer up, but Fire Chief Esler has plans to hang some of Cheney’s photos around the Waterville Fire station.

Cheney originally planned to double major in biochemistry, but a love for photography helped her find her way to graduating as a studio art major.

Even though Cheney graduated this past weekend, she plans to stay in Waterville as a firefighter for at least the next few years.

Bodyscapes photography workshop set

The Camera Club of Negros announced a one-day Bodyscape Photography Workshop to be led by renowned photographer Ricky Ladia on June 22, in Bacolod City.

The comprehensive workshop is designed for photographers of all skill levels, from beginners eager to explore the art of bodyscape photography, to seasoned professionals seeking to refine their techniques. Participants will gain valuable insights from Ladia’s extensive experience, learning the secrets behind capturing stunning and captivating bodyscape images.

Workshop highlights include expert instruction where Ricky Ladia will share his knowledge and expertise, guiding participants through the fundamentals of bodyscape photography; technical expertise as the workshop will delve into the latest photography techniques and equipment, empowering photographers to achieve their creative vision, all in a collaborative environment that will provide participants the opportunity to network with fellow photographers, sharing ideas and fostering a supportive community.

The registration fee for the workshop is P1,500, exclusive of snacks or lunch. Space is limited, so interested participants are encouraged to register early.

Say cheese? Ohio photographer’s ‘grumpy baby’ photo shoot goes viral

MASON, Ohio — Newborns can be expressive, but this little guy’s photo shoot takes the cake.

Lauren Carson, the owner of Drawing in Light Photography in Mason, Ohio, has been snapping photographs of babies since 2013. But a newborn named Trent gave her some memorable expressions. The boy, who was seven days old, appears to be grumpy about enduring a photo session, and Carson’s photos with his grimaces have gone viral.

“His mom and I were cracking up laughing,” Carson told WKYC-TV. “And she said, ‘He does this all the time, this is his normal face.’ And so, we just went with it, and I started taking pictures of it.”

Carson said the photo shoot lasted two hours, and that is a typical session for the photographer. She added in a Facebook post that while Trent had some sour expressions, “he was actually a sweet little snuggle bug!”

“He was perfectly comfortable,” Carson told WCPO-TV. “He wasn’t upset. He wasn’t crying. He wasn’t fussing. He was just scowling.”

Carson graduated with a degree in elementary education from Western Carolina University in 2007, according to her LinkedIn profile. She taught for six years before switching to photography and opening her own business in the Cincinnati area.

She knew when she took the photos of Trent that she had something special, but did not expect the huge reaction on social media.

“The fact that he was making such good eye contact is uncommon for a baby his age, it just added to it which made it magical,” Carson told WKYC.

But getting Trent’s grumpy-looking demeanor made the session memorable.

“I can’t make a baby smile, I can’t make a baby make expressive faces, it’s just it happens,” Carson told WCPO. “And I’ve gotten really good at being able to capture it the moment it happens. Those fleeting smiles and the looks, and making eye contact like that is something I’ve gotten really good at over the years of being able to, you know, taking a picture at that exact moment.”

As for Trent, he is blissfully unaware that he is a social media celebrity.

“Not long after these were taken he fell asleep and we took some more traditional posed newborn pictures,” Carson wrote on Facebook.

Jane Seymour: Photographers said I had ‘bulgy eyes’ so I tried to fix it

Jane Seymour has said she once attempted to get an under-eye procedure because “photographers kept saying that I had bulgy eyes”.

The British actress, 73, said nothing could be done about the issue because it was down to a muscle.

She told People magazine: “To set the record straight – because people were getting it wrong – they attempted to do something to my under-eyes when I was 40 because photographers kept saying that I had bulgy eyes.

“The doctor told me it’s actually a muscle, so there’s nothing I can do about it.”

The actress, best known for roles in James Bond film Live and Let Die and TV series Doctor Quinn, Medicine Woman, joked she has had “quite a good career considering the bulgy eye”, adding she never wants to “do anything permanent”.

She added: “I’ve been playing a lot of amazing roles, recently two women with Alzheimer’s with very emotional scenes, and if you’re going to be that emotional, you need every muscle in your face.

“So I have nothing against people doing anything they want to do, but for me personally, it is not helping me in my craft, unless I’m playing somebody who’s had Botox, in which case, I would be all over it.”

Seymour said she has a different secret to maintaining a youthful appearance and that “the best facelift is a smile”.

She also said she approaches exercise “very carefully” so she doesn’t hurt her back or legs, and that she has to incorporate weights into whatever she does because bone loss is what she needs to be careful of.

Seymour added that her approach to her health changed after she had a near-death experience on a set in Spain in 1988, when she “nearly died”. Seymour came down with bronchitis while filming and a nurse injected an antibiotic into her vein rather than a muscle.

Love Island UK fans say this Season 11 islander beat the photography “curse”

After months and months of waiting, Love Island UK is finally back in action with Season 11 and one star is getting all the attention.

The cast for Season 11 has been unveiled, but it’s important to note that this does not include the unexpected (but expected) bombshells that enter the villa throughout the season.

Nonetheless, fans were pumped to see who the new islanders were, but that meant looking at the infamous entrance photos. They’re infamous because the Love Island photos tend to have a knack for making the stars look completely different, whether that means making a 6’1 guy look 5 feet tall or making a girl look 10 years older.

However, it does seem like one islander, in particular, did not face this problem this time around. On May 27, LI fans on Reddit congratulated Mimii for pulling off an entrance photo that gives the correct impression of what she really looks like.

One fan wrote, “She beat the LI photographer curse that face card is something serious.”

Another fan chimed in with, “The LI photographer could not make her anything other than absolutely unbelievably stunning. Now that’s a superpower.”

According to her profile with Daily Mail, Mimii is a 24-year-old nursing student who applied to be a part of the series on a complete whim.

“My girls are my rocks and I’m theirs so I’ll be a good friend as well as going in there to find a man. I like dressing up so I’ll bring style, and I’d like to think I’m quite funny so I’ll make people laugh. Bringing honesty as well – I’m good at picking up on people’s personality traits and side-eyeing those who might be a liar,” she told the outlet.

Needless to say, Season 11 might have already found its fan-favorite, but we’ll find out more when viewers see how she fares in the villa.
