Jeff Server Photography at Inkberry Books: An exhibit with a sting
Photography and beekeeping are Jeff Server’s passions, but he did not expect to be talking about both at the opening of his photography exhibit at Inkberry Books.
On the evening of Friday, May 3, Gene Hayworth and Keith Waters of Inkberry Books hosted one of their frequent receptions highlighting the works of local artists. Niwot resident Server, whose photography will be on display throughout May, is featured this month.
Several attendees, expecting to hear Server’s remarks about his eight pieces on display in the bookstore, arrived promptly for the opening. However, when Jeff and Dawn Server were late arriving, it was apparent that something was amiss.
It happened that earlier that day nearby homeowners had discovered a most-unwanted bee swarm on their property. The Servers are well-known in Niwot for their company, Meadow Lake Honey, where they tend beehives and harvest honey. They were more than happy to capture, remove, then relocate the troublesome bees to their own property. This is normally a simple and safe exercise. Swarming bees tend to be docile and follow the queen into the capture container.
This time, however, the exercise proved to be much more challenging. When the Servers did arrive at the reception, it was with swollen limbs from numerous bee stings. Medication had reduced their discomfort and they were in surprisingly high spirits. The episode inspired an unexpected and spirited introductory question and answer session about their experience.
The exhibit itself included Server’s lovely, muted, filtered photographs, which one attendee described as “calming.” Server concentrates on landscapes within a radius of ten miles of Niwot, with just one photo in this exhibit taken in Destin, Florida.
Server mentioned that for the second time, his photographs will appear in an upcoming national photography exhibit in Louisville. This year, of 900 entries in the Louisville Art Association National Juried Photography Show and Sale, 100 were selected as finalists which will be on display. Two of Server’s photographs are among them.
He added that one of his daughters is also among the finalists. Having inspired her interest in photography, he couldn’t conceal the quiet pride in his smile. The show runs from May 24 to June 2 at the Louisville Center for the Arts at 801 Grant Avenue.
Artist receptions at Inkberry Books are relaxed community events which attract neighbors and friends. The location in a bookstore encourages discussions about reading and book recommendations. Hayworth and Waters have library and music backgrounds and are excellent hosts who make a point of drawing their guests into conversations with one another.

Google’s “Ask Photos” uses AI to let you ask questions about your photos
Google’s latest I/O conference was filled with promises of AI advancements. The company introduced new AI models and showcased their integration of Gemini into every Google product or service. One of the upcoming features, “Ask Photos,” will leverage Gemini AI to simplify navigating Google Photos albums.
Remember when Google Photos first used AI to search for faces and places in your pics? Ask Photos takes that concept and cranks it to eleven with Gemini. It lets you ask natural language questions about your photo library, so you no longer have to scroll endlessly for that perfect vacation pic.
What can Ask Photos do?
“Often we snap photos to capture memories or save important details, but the information in those photos can get lost in the shuffle,” Google writes in a blog post. Ask Photos will also help you get that information. You can ask it questions about your life, and it will analyze your photos to give you answers. “Gemini’s multimodal capabilities can understand the context and subject of photos to pull out details,” Google writes. “For example, you can ask: ‘What themes have we had for Lena’s birthday parties?’. Ask Photos will understand details, like what decorations are in the background or on the birthday cake, to give you the answer.”
Ask Photos isn’t just about search. If you need help putting together a trip highlight reel, Ask Photos can analyze your photos and suggest the best shots, maybe even write a caption for you. Creativity is questionable if you care about the personal touch and creativity behind your video, though, but that’s a different topic.
How does this really work?
- Cracking your question: Ask Photos analyzes your questions and figures out the best way to answer them. It goes beyond keywords, understanding concepts like “themed birthday party.”
- Delivering the answer: Next, it analyzes the search results, figuring out which photos best match your question. Gemini’s ability to understand image content helps here.
- Learning and safety: Google notes that Ask Photos is still under development, so expect some hiccups. However, they promise that safeguards are in place to ensure responses are safe. It can also learn from your corrections to improve.
What about privacy?
Your photos are personal, and Ask Photos will have to access them all to give you the answers you need. Google acknowledges the personal nature of your photos and assures us that our data is protected.
“Your personal data in Google Photos is never used for ads. And people will not review your conversations and personal data in Ask Photos, except in rare cases to address abuse or harm. We also don’t train any generative AI product outside of Google Photos on this personal data, including other Gemini models and products. As always, all your data in Google Photos is protected with our industry-leading security measures.”
Ask Photos is an experimental program with even more features on the horizon. It should be released soon, but there’s no exact date yet. While it promises a powerful way to interact with your memories, questions about privacy and how this AI tool functions remain. Only time will tell how this shakes out, but for now, get ready to ask your photos anything and see what it can do.

With works ranging from personal to political; from documentary to fashion, music and travel the fair yet again captures the inner-workings of human nature from mundane routines to constructed images. Sid Motion is an independent contemporary gallery in South London celebrating a range of vibrant artists working with mixed medias. Coinciding with Photo London 2024, the gallery is proudly hosting an ‘Open Studio’ with Dafna Talmor on 16 May, focusing on Talmor’s ‘Constructed Landscape’ series and recent publications. The former is a project consisting of two sub-series which include a collection of images initially taken as keepsakes across different locations. The images are staged landscapes carefully tight-roping between the ‘real’ and the imaginary.

This year they will present a solo exhibition of Johnny Mae Hauser, titled ‘Bildnis’. This will mark her UK debut, after receiving praise on her abstract pieces which focus on the fluidity of human emotion, captured through deep palettes, and painting-like compositions. These are works to view in person for their full expressive effect. Photo London 2024 will see works from Johnny Mae Hauser’s series, as well as her release of new artworks.

Artist agency Laird and Good Company will present their second Good Works collection this year at Photo London 2024. As a philanthropic initiative, it’s a charitable print sale, made possible by twelve photographers, with 100% of profits donated to The Ocean and Us. Charles Laird notes ‘We know our industry asks a lot of the planet and we want to make an impact through our collective creative community. Through Good Works, we aim to bring visual work to life that serves a greater purpose and gives back to our environment.’ Running parallel to this, photographer Rich Stapleton will be signing his latest book ‘Penumbra’; a collection of black and white photographs spanning more than six years and across a variety of locations, from Patagonia to Bhutan, Los Angeles to Bath.

For a consecutive year Belmond is a presenting partner for Photo London 2024, with this year’s partnership focused on contemporary travel photography. Coinciding with Photo London 2024, Flowers Gallery presents multidisciplinary photographer and filmmaker Lisa Jahovic’s first solo show, titled ‘The Third Drawer’. Performative dimensions are explored through analog experiments, as everyday objects take on a kinetic artistry. At the Photographers’ Gallery in London, the 2024 edition of the globally renowned Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize is on exhibition until 2 June. It highlights the works of the shortlisted candidates; Valie Export, Gauri Gill & Rajesh Vangad, Lebohang Kganye and Hrair Sarkissian, who all engage with urgent global issues from remnant of war and conflict, to experiences of diasporic communities and decolonisation. Delve into the world of the ocean with photographer and director Vivek Vadoliya. The 32-page zine titled ‘Mahasagara’ was inspired by a frightening near-drowing experience in Madagascar. The photographs capture the ever changing nature of the ocean- starting with calm, crystal clear waters turned into choppy,swirling dark blues. Giving into the strong rip-current Vadoliya surrendered himself to the ocean, saying ‘In a dance of exhales and inhales, something shifted. I slowed down and let go and rode the wave. It was like tapping into some universal rhythm that’s been there all along. Each beat felt like a reminder that we’re all part of something bigger, something timeless.’

From 16-18 May Chose Commune partnered with Webber Gallery, to bring in the decade with a series of limited and special edition books, classics, signed books and prints, and rarities from the archive. An original installation of works by Vasantha Yogananthan, Julie Cockburn, and Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck will also be on display, which was originally shown at Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris, and will also be shown at Gallery 939 during Frieze LA.

Museum of Australian Photography Auction
With so many private and even public photography galleries becoming defunct due to insane property prices and absurd ‘cost of living’ crisis, it’s important to support our remaining photo galleries to ensure we have a vibrant photography community and places to see incredible images.
The MAPh X Artist Photography Auction is taking place on 6 June 2024, and the proceeds are split evenly between the Museum and the artist.
This year they have a stunning and unique selection of photographic works by leading contemporary Australian artists including Murray Fredericks, Anne Zahalka, Petrina Hicks, The Huxleys, Tamara Dean and so many more.
It’s important to note that the auction isn’t actually at The Museum of Australian Photography, but at the James Makin Gallery which his at 89 Islington St Collingwood VIC 3066.
The event opens at 6pm with the auction starting at 7pm.
