How to capture the Great Eclipse courtesy of a National Geographic photographer

This Monday the 8th of April, we are getting ready for a total solar eclipse! Let’s find out how Keith Ladzinski, a National Geographic photographer and Emmy-nominated director, plans to capture this moment on camera.

Previously, we covered what is being talked about as the Great American Eclipse here, but given the historical nature of the event we thought we’d return to it again and this time look in detail at the equipment you need to capture this moment on camera. 

The Weather Channel partnered with Canon to feature a segment on eclipse photography with Canon Explorer of Light, Keith Ladzinski, and this is a summary of his advice.

Camera

Any camera will most likely do the trick to capture a solar eclipse, but some will give you a better experience depending on your expectations. Keith works a lot with Canon cameras, so he opts for a full-frame sensor camera like the Canon EOS R5 or EOS R8 that can produce high-resolution images. APS-C frame cameras such as the EOS R50 or EOS R100 have smaller sensors resulting in a cropped image compared to the uncropped full-frame sensor. Your sun disk will be significantly larger with the APS-C sensor than with the full-frame sensor.

Lenses

Choosing the right lens depends on how large you want the sun or moon to be. It comes to two things: your mirrorless camera’s sensor size and the focal length of your lens. Keith recommends choosing a lens that is 1/3 to 1/4 the height of your sensor. If you want to shoot a time-lapse of the whole 2.5-hour solar eclipse with a horizon or other foreground feature, he would recommend using very wide-angle lenses like the RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens.

Solar Filter

Solar filters transmit or restrict different wavelengths of light. Depending on what color of sun disk you prefer, you can opt for non-silvered glass and metalized Mylar for a blueish-white sun disk or silver/black polymer solar film, which gives you a yellow sun disk. Keith recommends using a CE or ISO-certified lens that goes over the front of the lens to keep you safe.

Keep in mind, that there is a difference between solar filters used by the public for viewing and photographers photographing the solar eclipse. Restricting the light through a filter is not enough. You need a solar filter that restricts infrared and ultraviolet light. Not having a solar filter or using just a plain ND filter can burn a hole not only through the camera sensor but also melt the aperture blades.

Tripod

Keith brings along a tripod to capture the entire 2.5-hour-long eclipse. He opts for a four-legged tripod for better stability. In the end, the tripod needs to support not only your camera but also the heavy lens. He sets the tripod up to eye level and ensures he doesn’t fully extend the center column since the lens will be pointing nearly straight up. And lastly, don’t forget your camping chair!

Since you will be shooting mostly straight up, ensure your tripod head can handle this with a heavy lens. Keith recommends using an astronomical equatorial head, gimbal head, or ball and socket head.

Capturing solar eclipse

There are two parts to a total eclipse. The first phase is when the moon starts to cover and uncover the sun’s disk. During the covering and uncovering phase, you have the full intensity of the sun visible, so you need the solar filter over the lens. Once you can only see a small part of the sun, about 15 seconds before totality, you can remove the solar filter to photograph the remaining diamond ring effect. 

Once the moon completely covers the sun, the second phase has begun and you are photographing the corona. Totality during the eclipse will vary but on average this will last about 2½ minutes. At the end of totality, the diamond ring effect occurs again. Once this light becomes very bright, replace the solar filter back on the front of your lens. 

EXTRA TIP: If your sun disk appears overexposed, we recommend switching your exposure mode to manual. Since the intensity of the sun remains the same, using manual exposure mode will usually give you better results.

The Yaquina Art Association Photographers (YAAP) currently has its 40th annual show on display at the Yaquina Art Gallery, located at the end of Newport’s Nye Beach turnaround at 789 NW Beach Drive. The exhibit will remain on display through April 26, and the gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Shooting the moon: How to photograph the historic eclipse

For those lucky enough to be in the path of totality during Monday’s total solar eclipse across the U.S., the much anticipated solar show will last only a couple minutes. 

Photos can preserve the moment, but only if they turn out.



Total Eclipse sequence 2017

A total solar eclipse, visible from Stanley, Idaho, on Aug. 21, 2017. On April 8, 2024, a total eclipse will pass from Texas to Maine, the first major U.S. total solar eclipse since 2017. 




Experienced eclipse photographers say that high-end specialty equipment isn’t necessary to get solid photos. It’s a boon for dedicated solar- and astrophotographers who have a masterful command of motorized star-tracking camera mounts and automatic exposure bracketing functions on digital cameras. 

But for most people, trying to wrangle complex equipment during the few precious minutes of totality — the last in the U.S. for the next 20 years — risks missing photos and the eclipse itself. All you really need is a digital camera with a fairly long lens and a tripod. A certified solar filter (like viewing glasses for your camera) is necessary except during totality, when the glasses and filter come off.

“Know exactly what you need to do and not panic,” said professional photographer Tristan Savatier. “Be cool.” 

Savatier traveled to Indonesia to photograph a total solar eclipse in 2016, and he shot the 2017 total eclipse across the U.S. in Oregon. On Thursday he was traveling to southern Texas to photograph this eclipse.

In Indonesia, he said, he had about two minutes of totality, or full solar eclipse, to take photos of the sun’s corona: whips of plasma flaring out from the sun that are only visible when the moon fully blocks the star. Savatier was armed with his standard Sony digital camera body equipped with a 200mm telephoto lens. He used a remote shutter control so he didn’t bump the camera by pushing the shutter button on the camera body. The two- or three-second self-timer function on many cameras works well for those who don’t have a remote controller, he said. 

“I did the thing completely manually,” he said. “The hard part is having a good focus because autofocus will not focus” on the darkened sun for many cameras.

Another photographer nearby traveled to Indonesia with ultra-expensive specialized equipment that included a star tracker and an automatic shutter trigger, Savatier said, and spent hours setting it all up. 

Savatier ended up with a handful of good photos, adjusting his settings manually between each shot and firing the shutter himself, as he would in almost any other photography situation. 

“The guy with all his equipment set up,” he recounted, “he looked at me and said it didn’t trigger.”

Savatier mounts his camera to a tripod without a motorized star-tracker — a sometimes finicky device that, if precisely adjusted into exact position, can pan a camera with the sun through the sky as the earth spins. But with his camera stationary on a tripod, he said, he had to continually readjust the camera position to keep the sun centered in the frame. 

Using a 300mm lens is good for a stationary camera that’s being adjusted by hand, he said, because it provides more room around the sun in the image. 

During totality, the brightness of the sun’s corona varies, with the brightest part nearest the sun and getting dimmer farther from the sun. Savatier recommended shooting with an aperture of f/4–f/5.6; ISO 100; and a variety of shutter speeds to capture various parts of the corona.

A shutter speed, or exposure time, of 1/200 second can capture detail in the brightest part of the corona near the sun, but the outer parts will be too dark to see. Taking more photos at gradually longer exposure times down to 1 or 2 seconds will produce a series of images where different parts of the corona are visible.

After the 2016 eclipse, Savatier used photoshop to stack four choice images of various exposure times on top of each other in perfect alignment. Then he used Photomatix software to blend the photos into a single composite image where all of the corona, and even some detail on the moon surface, was visible. The program’s “tone mapping” function made the image look realistic to what eclipse viewers saw with their eyes. 

But, he noted, some of his individual images were good in their own right, even though not all of the corona was visible at once. And, he stressed, “The camera I use doesn’t matter.” What matters, he said, was having the know-how and practice to make things work in the brief moment of totality. 

And it might not even be a good idea for someone to photograph the eclipse if it’s their first time seeing one, he said. It could be better just to enjoy the otherworldly sight. The 2016 eclipse in Indonesia, Savatier said, was not his first — it was just the first one he photographed. 

Most people, he said, “get paralyzed staring at the eclipse. It’s incredible and it’s very difficult to keep your mind (clear).

“The first time I saw an eclipse I didn’t take a photo, honestly. After you’ve seen one, the second one and the third one I was able to take photos.”

Acclaimed photographer Ruddy Roye to lecture at SIU April 11

CARBONDALE — Jamaican-born documentary photographer Radcliffe Roye will present a free, public lecture on Thursday, April 11, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Roye, who goes by the professional name, Ruddy Roye, will present “When Living Your Culture Becomes a Protest,” at 7 p.m. in the Wham Education Building, Room 105.

Photography exhibit in Canada captures a Lahaina that no longer exists

People in and around Lahaina before the August 2023 wildfires were the focus of a recent photography exhibit in Victoria, Canada.

In April 2022, photographer Arifin Graham captured everyday people in their element, doing everyday things on Maui.

“I always ask people, ‘May I take your photograph?'” Graham said. “There’s that moment of engagement where we really just as human beings, we are there for that moment. And then something of their life, their spirit, their humanity is revealed.”

His photos have taken on a new context after the wildfires. In addition to being celebratory, the black-and-white photos are now historical.

“I just felt that these were really compelling images of local people. And I knew that this was going to be an interesting portfolio of work and that it would be called ‘The Last Resort,’ which is named after the Eagles song from 1976, in which Lahaina figures hugely,” Graham said. “The song is about how we find paradise and kiss it goodbye.”

Graham said he spent many years in Lahaina, and his parents owned a place there. He and his wife are traveling to Maui soon for the first time since 2022.

He said he recognizes the sensitivity of the situation on Maui and how that might factor into taking more photographs during his trip.

“I don’t know what that looks like now. And it has to be done very carefully. And I don’t even know if it’s possible now. One thing I think about is seeing if I can find some of the people who I photographed and to check in with them — be able to say ‘hello’ and say, ‘hey, how’s it going?'”
