A photographer who won a Sunday Times award for his sunset image wants to track down a couple featured in it.

Simon Lees, 54, has been a photographer for more than 30 years. He captured the sun setting over Bath during a summer evening eight years ago.

The image won him the Sunday Times Big Shot competition in 2020.

He is now asking for help to identify the mystery couple in the foreground, to gift them “the special moment in time”.

Mr Lees, a local resident, said he captured the image of Bath’s skyline whilst on a walk through the fields overlooking Horseshoe Walk, above the canal in Widcombe.

He said he had walked the same path many times but added there was something “special” about that particular evening.

“It was packed with a mixture of students, locals and tourists having picnics and barbeques,” he said.

“I sat there for a good 40 minutes to an hour and watched as the sky changed. It was just a very chilled evening.”

Mr Lees said he wanted to track down the couple – whether they were still together, or not – to share that moment with them.

“Even from the second I took the photo, there was just something about that couple in the foreground that drew me in,” he said.

“You sort of wonder what was going on in their minds. They look as though they’re having the best time, and to capture that special moment in time and not know who they are, it’s been bugging me ever since.”

If Mr Lees manages to find the coluple, he said he would give them a free, framed copy.

“I just think it would be a nice gift back to them,” he said.
