Curate a burgeoning Indian art market

Curate a burgeoning Indian art market

More Indians are putting value of the monetary kind in contemporary artworks than ever before. And much of this healthy, wealthy and wise build-up is due to more artists putting out their works in the market in a systemic manner that is far less scattershot and more visible than before. The ongoing ‘The Art of India 2024′, as well as ‘India Art Fair’ that starts tomorrow – both in Delhi – do two things simultaneously: one, bring contemporary art out into the ‘open’ for a far larger demand to be created across price slabs; two, break the barrier between established art by past masters or well-established artists – usually sought after by institutional collectors – and top-notch upcoming artists sought after by the multiplying spending classes who are increasingly appreciating the value of possessing good, contemporary art.

Much like the retail investor in the stock market, the retail art buyer in the art market is pushing up this till-now undervalued ecosystem in India. Picking up valued works by contemporary lesser-known artists push their value, quite like non-blue-chip stocks waiting to enter their ‘blue’ period. Galleries coming together under a common roof of art fairs – Delhi, by virtue of these collectives, becoming the de facto art capital – are, in a way, emulating the market dynamics of what the Paris Salon did for the 18th-19th-century European art world and artists, and the Biennales do today in more developed art markets.

Art, like all culture, maintains a strong, yet asynchronous, relationship with capital – the former thrives on the latter, while underplaying a 1:1 relationship. As an asset class, it also is a powerful marker and shaper of cultural power. Let’s frame it, hang it and curate it to its full potential.

Jean Mallard Hides Enchanting Mysteries Under the Dreamy Shroud of Dusk

Awash in blues and greens, Jean Mallard’s watercolor illustrations plunge us into enchanting worlds of knights, castles, and dark forests. The Paris-based artist gravitates toward mystery and magic, rendering tiny characters amid vast landscapes of rolling hills and pastel skies.

Many works shown here are commissions for a children’s film festival and a book of stories from the Middle Ages, and all appear as if from a dream. Mallard envisions a hot air balloon with an entire ecosystem tucked in its basket and flying rigs with plants and peacocks. “I liked mixing in this floating vessel, real people and other hybrids, like messengers from an imaginary world who guide us towards fiction and dreams,” he shares.

Most recently, Mallard has turned his focus to night and the strange, bewitching nature of dusk. “It’s one of my favorite subjects because it’s a good way to tell, through landscapes and nocturnal atmospheres, the feelings that go through me and that I can’t express in any other way,” he says. This fascination emerges in a dual exhibition with Lili Wood, whose bright, daytime paintings counter Mallard’s moody evenings. Titled Wandering, that show is on view through February 24 at Burronzu Gallery in Liège.

Keep up with Mallard’s latest illustrations—he’s currently working on a series for storybook and a collection based on Midsummer—on Instagram. Shop prints and originals at La Slow Galerie.

Wall Art Market size is forecast to grow by $34.77 billion during 2022-2031, accelerating at a CAGR of 5.6% according to a new research report

The market for wall art is expanding rapidly, even in emerging economies where home accessories and other related goods are finding great success on the market. Due to the expansion of the real estate sector in major cities and the shift from traditional to urban living, the impact of this aspect on the wall art market is anticipated to grow during the projected period.

Rise in disposable income, increase in the global population, and thriving real estate sector drive the growth of the global wall art market. A massive increment in the number of households due to urbanization will promote global market growth trends. Growing demand for modern and abstract wall art across the commercial and residential sectors is predicted to create new growth opportunities for the global market. However, fluctuations in raw material costs can put brakes on the global market expansion.

The market will expand due to the home decor sector’s quick development and expansion in developing economies. Since manufacturers are concentrating on creating innovative wall paintings and drawings, the wall art market demand for abstract and modern wall art from the residential and commercial sectors is rising. This is projected to have an impact on the wall art market growth over the course of the forecast period. One of the factors propelling the wall art market’s growth over the forecast period is the movement of people from rural to urban areas, where they are embracing the modern lifestyle. But the market’s expansion is being constrained by shifting raw material prices.

The global wall art market is segmented into type, price point, sales channel, and region. By type, the market is divided into modern, abstract, and others. Among these, the abstract segment occupied the major wall art market share of the market in 2021, and is projected to maintain its dominance during the forecast period. Modern art that does not depict imagery from the real world is called abstract art. Even though it features color, lines, and shapes, neither of them is intended to resemble actual objects or live beings. The abstract concepts and ideas frequently had an impact on the works of art. As a result, abstract wall art is greatly demanded by consumers.

According to the estimate for the global market for wall art, North America held the largest share of the market in 2021 and is expected to keep doing so in the near future. The increase in consumer spending on high-end home design and décor items and the rise in living standards are driving the growth of wall art market in North America region. Sales in this area are further boosted by a well-developed retail infrastructure and celebrity brand endorsements. Additionally, the U.S. is anticipated to expand at the greatest CAGR because of its fast-developing infrastructure and alterations in consumer behavior brought on by an increase in disposable income.

The COVID-19 epidemic had an adverse effect on the global market for wall art. The pandemic’s disruption of the supply chain, shortage of raw material availability, and restrictions on the transit of commodities had an effect on the market for wall art. Additionally, delays and disruptions at national borders have made it difficult to export and supply wall art around the globe.

One of the reasons affecting the sales of wall art is the expanding social media. The majority of Americans have acknowledged that they get more of their decorating ideas from publications, the houses of their friends and family, television shops,. The manufacturers are also increasing their social media presence in an effort to increase customer awareness of new product introductions and drive sales. Due to the growing numbers of millennials and generation X, the effective marketing strategies are also very common in the nation.

According to CXOs of leading companies, rising interest in giving homes and offices an aesthetic look, increasing demand for wall art from the construction industry to provide furnished and ready-to-live homes, increasing applications of décor in spas, salons, restaurants, and other establishments, rising preferences for the use of customized decorative products, and increasing demand for specific design of decoration are some of the significant and essential factors that will likely accelerate the growth of the wall art market. On the other hand, growing adoption of smartphones and internet portals, together with the prevalence of better sales channels, would further contribute by producing enormous chances that will led to the rise of the wall art market during the forecast period.

Another major driver of the demand for wall art is rising consumer disposable income. High-paying customers rarely give such purchases for their homes much thought. The changing tastes and preferences of customers as well as their changing lifestyles are contributing to this rise in demand for wall art. Additionally, the real estate market in developed nations like the U.S., Germany, the UK, and France, among others, has seen a considerable uptick in recent years, which is fueling demand for home lifestyle items like wall art. Another element boosting demand for wall art is GDP growth in developed nations.

From the cliffs of the Zin Desert to the shallow waters of South Africa’s Kosi Bay, the 2023 Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest traverses the globe documenting the most striking moments of life on Earth. Laurent Ballesta, whose luminous underwater images we’ve featured previously, won the competition for the second time. Titled “The golden horseshoe,” the photo peers in on a tri-spine horseshoe crab crawling over the mud with a trio of small golden trevallies trailing behind with the hope that the crab will rustle up some food as it moves.

In its 59th year, the contest garnered nearly 50,000 entries from 95 countries. The winning photos— which include an electrifying shot of fireflies from Sriram Murali and Fernando Constantino Martínez Belmar’s devastating documentation of deforestation in Mexico—are on view through June 30 at the Natural History Museum in London.

Color printing techniques have been used for centuries in Japan, from monochrome prints that were hand-colored to nishiki-e, or “brocade pictures,” in which a number of woodblocks forming separate parts of the image could be printed using different hues. Publishers relied on these methods until the early 1900s, when modern techniques like CYMK created multicolor impressions.

In the archive of Japan’s National Institute for Educational Policy Research, a trove of incredible textbooks spans the mid-1800s to the 1940s. Ranging from brush painting guides to elementary readers to the geography of Koshi Province—now the Hokuriku region—hundreds of digital scans reveal what students were learning in school more than 100 years ago. Richly illustrated spreads portray lessons in topography, languages, and a series titled Circle of Wisdom, with some method books geared toward teachers at various grade levels.

Each rare title is scanned and uploaded as a PDF so you can virtually page through the entire volume. If you don’t read Japanese, switch on your browser’s translate function and learn a thing or two on the institute’s website, where you can also arrange a visit in-person to its library in Tokyo. About 60 percent of Japan’s apples grow in Aomori Prefecture, and as with any agricultural crop, the region also generates a significant amount of production waste, particularly as the fruits are squeezed and pressed for juice. The designers at Sozai Center engineered a new technology that recycles the leftover pomace into an elegant fabric called “Adam.”

In collaboration with KOMORU Corporation and M&T, the center gathers leftover matter from local farmers and fashions translucent sheets speckled with deep red flecks from a powder of stems, skins, and cores. Water-resistant and durable enough for frequent washing, “Adam” is suitable for garments and furniture. In addition to selling the raw fabric, Sozai Center also designed a small wallet and crossbody pouch for everyday use.

Shotaro Oshima, the studio’s director, shares that the team is currently working on creating boards from scallops and straw waste. Follow the latest developments on Instagram. (via designboom)

How did the art creation and market evolve last year? What were the most expensive Chinese art in salesrooms? And what policies were issued to further regulate the sector? These aspects were given a review at a recent forum on the development of art market in Beijing, jointly organized by Beijing Business Today and Beijing Association of Auctioneers.

Attendants from different sectors of art market discussed major events of last year which reveal changes and tendencies in the area, such as the competition between Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, Guangdong province, in building a showcase and trade center for international art, an increase in launching digital platforms for art fairs, auctions and auction previews and the rise of buyers born in 2000 and after, and their favored categories, which are different from those from older generations.

Starting in late December and January when the temperatures stay consistently below freezing, bodies of water in the northern United States and Canada begin to freeze. As the ice reaches thicknesses over four inches, it becomes safe to walk on, and at more than five inches, it is usually safe for snowmobiles. Then, in droves, residents take to the lakes. Ontario’s 279-square-mile Lake Simcoe, for example, draws more people for its ice fishing than any other lake in North America, attracting upwards of 4,000 huts each year.

The colorful villages of hand-built structures that populate many popular spots during the coldest months caught the eye of Toronto-based architectural photographer Richard Johnson (1957-2021), who captured hundreds of the structures, from the artistic to the ad-hoc, in a series of bold portraits taken between 2007 and 2019. “I have always been fascinated with small structures,” Johnson said. He continued:

My earliest recollection of shelter was as a 6-year-old growing up in Trinidad. It was a guard house for our neighbour. No more than three walls and a lean to roof, it was a simple solution to shade the harsh sun and protect from tropical rains. These shelters, built by individuals with available materials, inspired me to take notice.

The photos highlight a wide array of materials and design choices that comprise the seasonal communities, from plastic tarps wrapped around poles to one-person sheds to comparatively sophisticated board-and-batten buildings. Johnson captured the individual personality of each hut in a square format, framed by a snowy landscape, with their inhabitants typically out of view. Small enough to be towed onto the ice with a vehicle, some versions boast unique decor and enough space to hold several people, a small stove, and basic provisions.
