Cañete, Chile to Hold Photography Event August 18-19

PRESS RELEASE

HAVANA TIMES – On August 18 and 19, Cañete will host the first version of En-Foco-Sur, the First International Meeting of Contemporary Photography of the Southern Cone in the Bio Bio Region of Chile.

The event is organized by the recently formed Cañete Photographers Association (@afc.canete) and the Municipality of Cañete (@municipalidaddecanete).

This event includes two days full of magic and love for images, including workshops and talks with renowned national photographers, student contests, projection of short films and outdoor photography exhibitions by renowned international photographers from Argentina, Brazil, and a representation of four Cuban photographers, guest country of this first meeting.

En-Foco-Sur, is the First International Meeting of Contemporary Photography in the Region, so we hope that it can be maintained over time, always trying to reflect, disseminate, manage and circulate the production and thought around Chilean and Latin American contemporary photography. Likewise, creating links with the historical and current referents, establishing bridges with the local community, achieving the sharing of love and awareness for the image.

En-Foco-Sur is an opportunity for photographers to show their work and experiences to the rural community of Chile, in addition to learning new techniques and skills from other professional photographers of our Continent, understanding that the image is a powerful tool to understand the territory and the identity of the place where we live.

Ruber Osoria, a young photographer from eastern Cuba who came to Chile in 2018 with the dream of one day being able to buy a camera and unleash his imagination. Today he brings together his compatriots in this photographic meeting. His aim is decentralizing, making visible and giving more freedom and independence to contemporary Cuban photography.

Today’s Photo from Ted Grussing Photography: Two to Share

… a couple of portraits tonight … above one of my favorite bobcats which spent some time visiting with me as I collected hundreds of shots of him … a shared life even if for just a few minutes … he knows where and what his place in all that is, is. For me, the wonder only grows as certainties become what they always have been … uncertainties.

And the shot below is a portrait of one of the coyotes that inhabits the area too … another creature that knows his place in life … perhaps it is about the struggle to survive and the necessity to work for what we get … the struggle to make it in the real world with eyes wide open … reality without distraction of games and silliness. and the confidence knowing that we create our own security and self-worth.

Another fun day … time with friends and the ever-present search for whatever is out there!

Dates have been set for my next shows: 7:30 PM September 22nd at the Smothers Theater on the campus of Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. If you live in the area. The Mary Fisher Theater in Sedona, Arizona on October 21 at 7:00 PM (not yet on the website calendar.)
Dates and times for November and December will be out soon … if you would like to book a private showing please let me know what you would like.

Have a beautiful day … keep breathing and share the joy you find in life … you can’t go wrong with that!

Cheers,

Ted

When I wander in places of greed for gain I have
no desire; the grass of the meadow and the stars
of the night comfort me. Though darkness overcome
me, I shall not despair; the God of my youth still abides.
with me. He showeth me the palaces of the rich and
the haunts of the poor, yet keepeth sweet my soul.
When weariness overtakes me, I lie down in slumber,
and the peace of the world is upon me. Though poverty
abide with me, I pray that courage and gentleness
forsake me not. And with all living things out of this
earth and out of other worlds believe I shall grow
in the fields of God forever.

A Psalm by Max Ehrmann

What Photographers Want Versus What They Need

What Photographers Want Versus What They Need

With everything photographers are bombarded by these days, it can be easy to confuse what you want versus what you need. This excellent video essay features an experienced photographer discussing a range of things modern photographers often want versus the things that will actually make them better and happier creatives.

Coming to you from First Man Photography, this insightful video essay discusses the difference between what photographers want versus what they need. We often focus way too much on gear to the detriment of deeper creative pursuits. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the tech side of photography, but where it goes wrong is when it starts to become the end instead of the means. None of us first began the craft because we liked the gadgets; we did so because we really enjoyed the magic of the creative process, both the experience and the results. After a bit of time, it can be easy to forget that and end up in a cycle of chasing quick satisfaction through spending money or chasing likes on social media. When that happens, it is time for a good reset, returning to whatever it was that made you fall in love with photography in the first place. Check out the video above for the full rundown.

Large Format Photographer Considered ‘Underrated’ is Finally Recognized

Large Format Photographer Considered ‘Underrated’ is Finally Recognized

Evelyn Hofer photography

In her lifetime, Evelyn Hofer was underrated in photography circles mainly because she was seen as too “commercial.” But, the incredible body of work she left behind is challenging this assessment.

Hofer is being given posthumous exhibitions and recognition including a new book that has just been released. Her intriguing and brilliantly-executed portraits of people from all over the world are simply too good to ignore.

Unusually for a documentary photographer, she used a large format 4×5 inch Linhof Technika view camera that required patience and engineer-like understanding to operate.

“She was always studying the light,” Andreas Pauly, her former assistant, and executor of her estate, told the New York Times in 2010. “She had a little notebook and would write down when the light would be good, then she would come back at that time. It was rare she set up a camera and did something quickly.”

In the mid-1950s, Hofer began working with the writer Mary McCarthy who commissioned her to illustrate The Stones of Florence. So began a fruitful relationship that saw Hofer travel across the world capturing the sights of New York, Ireland, London, and Italy.

Despite her travel photos being seen by millions of people on the pages of magazines and in books, Hofer, who died aged 87 in 2009, was not a prominent photographer in her lifetime.

Clare Grafik, co-curator of a retrospective of Hofer’s work at the Photographers’ Gallery, London, thinks that the perceived commerciality of these commissions might have worked against Hofer being seen as a serious artist.

“Her color work, particularly her portraits of people in their urban settings, is so extraordinary that it’s difficult to understand why she is not more well known and appreciated,” Grafik tells The Guardian.

“Through those books Hofer’s work undoubtedly reached a lot of people, [but] many readers perhaps did not take that much notice of the photographs other than as illustrations of the writing. In art circles, there may have also been a latent snobbery towards her because she was seen as a commercial photographer, but working on the travel books is how she developed her own style.”

Photographer Sues NYC Socialite For Getting Him Jailed on False Charges

Photographer Sues NYC Socialite For Getting Him Jailed on False Charges

A photographer is suing New York City socialite and client Libbie Mugrabi for getting him jailed on false charges and destroying his career.

A professional photographer is suing a New York City socialite and former client for getting him jailed on false charges and destroying his once-promising career.

On Sunday, photographer Jacob Beam filed a multi-million dollar lawsuit against socialite Libbie Mugrabi claiming that he now works as a part-time food deliveryman after the “horrific ordeal” she launched on him.

According to a report by The Daily Beast, the photographer claims he met Mugrabi, who is the ex-wife of billionaire Andy Warhol collector David Mugrabi, through a mutual friend in December 2021.

Mugrabi, who produces a streetwear accessories line called Libbie Love, was impressed with Beam’s photography portfolio and wanted to hire him to do a shoot for her company.

According to the lawsuit, Mugrabi flew Beam to Hawaii for a photoshoot. Although the shoot in Hawaii was later canceled, Mugrabi asked the photographer to come to work with her in New York.

The socialite allegedly paid for Beam to move in from Indiana and work for her. The Daily Beast reports that Beam worked out of Mugrabi’s home studio, doing photography, web design, and graphic design for her company Libbie Love — while also working as her personal assistant.

‘A Fit of Rage’

However, on May 22, 2022, Beam alleges that Mugrabi suddenly turned on him and “had a fit of rage” and ordered him to get out of her townhouse.

According to the lawsuit, Mugrabi had “rummaged through [his] personal belongings and found a journal that he was keeping, which made reference to her.”

Beam says that Mugrabi was furious that he had written about her in his journal as she had a book deal with a publishing company. The photographer claims Mugrabi threatened to have him shot if he tried to sell any details about her.

The complaint states: “She loudly told him, ‘How dare you write about me. You know I have a book deal with Simon and Schuster, and if you try to profit off my name I will send someone to shoot you through the head. Do you understand?’”

According to the lawsuit, Beam left Mugrabi’s townhouse and the socialite’s then-publicist booked him a room at a nearby hotel, which the photographer paid for upon arrival.

But the next day, Beam was walking in Central Park when Mugrabi contacted him demanding that he return some clothing designs that he had stored on his laptop. The photographer also claims that the socialite “threatened him, telling him that she was calling the police.”

When the photographer returned to his hotel room, New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers had shown up at his door.

NYPD Officers told Beam that “a woman reported that you had held her at gunpoint and forced her to book this hotel room.” According to the lawsuit, Beam “was never in possession of and has never owned a gun.”

Beam was also told by NYPD officers that Mugrabi had accused him of stealing her camera — which actually belonged to him.

Despite this, Beam was allegedly arrested on a raft of charges, including stalking, menacing, and criminal possession of a weapon. The photographer spent a night in jail before being arraigned the next day in New York County Criminal Court and released on his own recognizance.

‘Horrific Ordeal’

Beam returned home to Indiana shortly after and all of the charges against him were eventually dismissed on September 6, 2022.

However, Beam says he has “continuously suffered from extreme anxiety and depression” following the incident. He has not been able to work as a professional photographer since the ordeal.

“Due to the post-traumatic distress that he has continued to experience, [Beam] has been unable to work full-time, and has been in a near-constant state of anxiety and depression,” the complaint states.

“He supports himself as best he can by delivering food on a part-time basis, and he has sought the assistance of a therapist to help him try to function and to try to overcome his psychological and emotional issues caused by the horrific ordeal he has undergone, which was directly caused by [Mugrabi’s] outrageous and malicious actions.”

Beam is asking for a jury trial and at least $5 million in damages. The Daily Beast reports that Mugrabi did not immediately respond for comment.

Mugrabi previously made headlines when she was arrested for allegedly breaking her ex-housekeeper’s phone and threatening her with a knife when her employee asked for the money she owed her.

Requiring patience, this precise moment marked the culmination of the shoot.

Filmmaker JustKay presents his unique perspective on rising against the odds and confronting the unknown. His compelling short film “Take a Leap of Faith” vividly captures the turning point of his life when he chose not to attend college, bravely abandoning the conventional path to pursue his dream wholeheartedly. Photography + Review: 5 Seconds of Summer and Meet Me @ The Altar

Photography + Review: 5 Seconds of Summer and Meet Me @ The Altar

Posted: 15th August, 2023 by The Editor

5 Seconds of Summer are making their way around the United States this summer with support from Meet Me @ The Altar and recently made a two night stop in Boston.

We caught night two’s sold out show, which kicked off with a 30 minute set from Meet Me @ The Altar. On top of squeezing in as much original music as they could, they still set aside time to cover Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated”.

This tour is unique in that it is designed in the style of a late night TV show, appropriately titled “The 5 Seconds of Summer Show”. Promptly walking on stage at 9pm, 5 Second of Summer played a mock TV show opening introducing us to our “hosts” with a picture of each member. To kick off their set, we heard “Bad Omens”, “2011”, and “Caramel”. As the band started to loosen up, each member was seen walking on top of their rack of guitar cabs allowing them to take in the sold out crowd in front of them. Despite releasing their newest album 5SOS5 last year, 5 Seconds of Summer dug deep into their discography and pulled out a slew of fan favorites from each release. In the middle of their 28 song setlist, they rolled an inflatable dice that decided between two songs to play. The winner of tonight’s dice roll was “English Love Affair” which marked the live debut of this song. With one final push, the band continued to command the stage with “Teeth”, “Jet Black Heart”, and “She Looks So Perfect”. It was time for 5 Seconds of Summer to wrap their set up, but the thunderous applause led them back to the stage for an encore. They ended the show with both “Outer Space” and “Youngblood”. Despite many stylistic changes over their career, “The 5 Seconds of Summer Show” tour shows they can still deliver a set that satisfies both new and lifelong fans. We are excited to see what the future holds for them after this. Until then, you can check out the pictures from their second night in Boston that our photographer Kyle took!

The Spring Festival is a major traditional festival among Chinese people. In Deqing County, Zhaoqing, China, on the 15th day of the first lunar month, people take turns lighting firecrackers and throwing “lions” until the lions are blown to pieces, praying for peace in all seasons and abundant grain.
