DPReview has been acquired by Gear Patrol — a publisher focused on varied product reviews and buying guides. Scott Everett, general manager for DPReview, announced the acquisition on Tuesday, saving the beloved camera reviews website from closure almost three months after the site announced it was being shut down by its former parent company, Amazon. The price of the acquisition was not disclosed.

“Gear Patrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together,” said Everett. “Thank you for your continued support of our team and legacy. We appreciate it and can’t thank you all enough.”

Everett says in his announcement that current core employees across the company’s editorial, tech, and business divisions will continue to work on the site. He also says that DPReview site features and editorial coverage won’t be impacted by the acquisition and that the website will continue to operate as it did before the purchase. Everett isn’t promising that nothing will change under the platform’s new ownership, however, adding that DPReview will “continue evolving based on customer feedback and the rapidly changing state of the publishing industry.”

“DPReview is the internet’s original center of gravity for photography,” says Eric Yang, CEO and founder of Gear Patrol. “As a photography enthusiast, I’ve been an avid reader since its earliest days. We’re honored to receive the baton from Amazon and help the incredible DPReview team craft the next phase of their story. Editorial integrity and the passionate community are the heart of DPReview and we plan to uphold that charter.”

Given its similarities in publishing gadget reviews and buying guides, Gear Patrol feels like a good fit for DPReview. Before this announcement, the DPReview website and user forum were acquired by Amazon back in 2007. DPReview content was often linked to relevant Amazon product listings under its ownership, but otherwise, it’s not especially clear why the retail giant wanted a photography review website in its portfolio.

Earlier this year, it was announced that DPReview would be shut down after 25 years of operation as part of Amazon’s cost-cutting measures that saw 18,000 job cuts announced in January. The website was only supposed to remain operational until April 10th, sparking archiving efforts from users looking to preserve decades’ worth of DPReview’s valuable content before it vanished for good. The site thankfully remained online beyond this deadline and has continued to publish reviews and editorial content ever since.

It was a very good day for Jason Johnson of Chilton, formerly of Hixton, when he learned that two of his photographs were voted as favorites at a photo exhibit held in his home county.

Johnson won the Viewer’s Choice with his photo of a peacock in all its glory. He also received an Honorable Mention for his photo of the Montello Granite waterfalls.

This is not the first time that Johnson has taken home an award from this event at the Black River Falls Public Library Photo Exhibit. The very first time he entered, his photo of a sleeping fox won top spot as Viewer’s Choice. His photo of Green Bay Packer Randall Cobb also has received recognition.

“Our library in Black River Falls has sponsored this exhibit for many years,” he said. “My dad and I have taken photos there several times, and enjoy looking at all the awesome pictures that people bring. This year there were over 40.”

Johnson added, “I had just gotten my peacock picture all framed and ready to go when COVID cancelled the exhibit in 2020. This was the first year the exhibit was back, so it’s been ready and waiting all this time. Back when she first saw the peacock picture, my mom said, ‘That photo is a winner—I want it.’ We made a deal. I told her, ‘If it’s a winner, it’s yours!’”

Nature and wildlife are favorites to focus his camera on, but Johnson also loves creating photo ops with various action figures in realistic settings and especially taking photos of his Green Bay Packers and can often be seen at training camps getting action shots of his favorite players. “I entered a photo of Jordy Nelson in a fancy frame one year. Overheard how someone said it looked like something someone got in a sports shop. I didn’t win that year, but I took that comment as a compliment. Maybe I should have attached a photo meeting him and of Jordy signing it for me.”

He had camera in hand for a couple of Lambeau Leaps coming straight for him and had a great time with the “Leap” celebrating experiences. Johnson also has found a lot of photo opportunities right in Chilton and is often seen around town finding the perfect shot.

So what does Johnson do with all his pictures? “I recently left apartment life and bought a home in Chilton and it has lots of wall space. And as far as the peacock picture goes, she had to wait a long time, but ‘Happy Belated Mother’s Day, Mom!’”

A Beginner’s Guide to Smartphone Photography in 2023

A Beginner’s Guide to Smartphone Photography in 2023

Smartphone cameras have come a long way in recent years. Today, even the most basic smartphones have cameras that are capable of taking stunning photos. But with so many features and settings to choose from, it can be tough to know where to start.

That’s where this guide comes in. We’ll walk you through the basics of smartphone photography, from understanding the different camera settings to composing your shots like a pro. By the end of this guide, you’ll be taking better photos with your smartphone than ever before.

What You’ll Need

To get started with smartphone photography, you’ll need a smartphone with a camera. Most smartphones have cameras these days, so you’re probably good to go. However, if you’re serious about smartphone photography, you may want to consider investing in a smartphone with a high-quality camera.

You’ll also need a few accessories to help you take better photos. These include:

  • A tripod: A tripod will help you keep your phone steady, which will prevent blurry photos.
  • A lens kit: A lens kit can give you more creative control over your photos.
  • A photo editing app: A photo editing app can help you improve your photos after you’ve taken them.

Understanding the Basic Camera Settings

iPhone 15 camera

The first step to taking better smartphone photos is to understand the different camera settings. Here are a few of the most important ones:

  • Exposure: Exposure is the brightness of your photo. You can adjust the exposure by moving the slider in your camera app.
  • ISO: ISO is a measure of how sensitive your camera is to light. A higher ISO will make your photos brighter, but it can also introduce noise.
  • White balance: White balance is the setting that determines how your camera renders colors. If the white balance is off, your photos will have a blue or orange tint.
  • Focus: Focus is the setting that determines which part of your photo is in sharp focus. You can adjust the focus by tapping on the part of the photo you want to be in focus.
  • Shutter speed: Shutter speed is the length of time the camera’s shutter is open. A longer shutter speed will let in more light, but it can also make your photos blurry if your subject is moving.

Composing Your Shots

Once you understand the basic camera settings, it’s time to start thinking about composition. Composition is the arrangement of elements in your photo. A well-composed photo will be visually appealing and tell a story.

There are many different composition techniques you can use. Here are a few of the most common ones:

  • The rule of thirds: The rule of thirds is a simple but effective composition technique. To use it, imagine your photo divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically. Then, place your subject at the intersection of these lines.
  • Leading lines: Leading lines are lines that lead the viewer’s eye into your photo. They can be natural lines, like roads, rivers, fences or buildings.
  • Negative space: Negative space is the empty space in your photo. It can be used to create a sense of balance or to draw attention to your subject.

Taking Better Photos with Your Smartphone

Now that you know the basics of camera settings and composition, it’s time to start taking better photos with your smartphone. Here are a few tips:

  • Use natural light: Natural light is the best light for taking photos. If you can, try to shoot outdoors in the shade or on a cloudy day.
  • Keep your phone steady: A shaky camera will make your photos blurry. Hold your phone steady or use a tripod to keep it from moving.
  • Pay attention to the background: The background of your photo can be just as important as your subject. Make sure the background is clean and uncluttered.
  • Experiment with different settings: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different camera settings. See what different settings do to your photos and find what you like best.
  • Have fun! Photography is a great way to capture memories and express your creativity. So relax, have fun, and take some great photos!

Editing Your Photos

Once you’ve taken your photos, you can edit them to improve them even further. There are many different photo editing apps available, both free and paid. Some of the most popular ones include Adobe Lightroom, Snapseed, and VSCO.

Advanced Smartphone Photography Techniques

Once you’ve mastered the basics of smartphone photography, you can start to experiment with more advanced techniques. Here are a few ideas:

  • Night photography: Night photography can be challenging, but it can also be very rewarding. To take good night photos, you’ll need to use a tripod and a slow shutter speed. You can also use a flash, but be careful not to overexpose your photos.
  • Macro photography: Macro photography is the art of taking close-up photos of small objects. To take good macro photos, you’ll need a macro lens or a phone with a macro mode.
  • HDR photography: HDR photography is a technique that combines multiple photos taken at different exposures to create a photo with a wider range of dynamic range. This can be useful for photos that have both bright and dark areas.
  • Panorama photography: Panorama photography is a technique that allows you to stitch together multiple photos to create a wide-angle photo. This can be useful for capturing landscapes or cityscapes.
  • Long exposure photography: Long exposure photography is a technique that uses a slow shutter speed to capture motion blur. This can be used to create creative effects, such as blurring water or car headlights.

Photography as a Creative Outlet

Smartphone photography can be a great way to express your creativity. You can use your phone to capture your unique perspective on the world, and to tell stories through your photos.

There are many different ways to be creative with smartphone photography. You can experiment with different composition techniques, use different filters and effects, or even create your own custom edits. The possibilities are endless!

Photography as a Way to Connect with Others

Smartphone photography can also be a great way to connect with others. You can share your photos on social media, or you can print them out and share them with friends and family.

Sharing your photos is a great way to show others your creativity, and to connect with them on a deeper level. It can also be a great way to document your life and share your memories with others.

Photography as a Hobby

If you enjoy taking photos, smartphone photography can be a great hobby to pursue. There are many different ways to get involved in smartphone photography, such as joining a photography club, taking online courses, or attending workshops.

Photography can be a challenging but rewarding hobby. It can help you to develop your creativity, your technical skills, and your eye for composition. It can also be a great way to relax and de-stress.

Photography as a Career

If you’re serious about photography, you can even turn it into a career. There are many different jobs available in the photography industry, such as photographer, photojournalist, or editor.

Photography can be a great way to make a living, but it’s important to remember that it’s also a lot of hard work. If you’re serious about pursuing a career in photography, you’ll need to be prepared to put in the time and effort.

Here are some additional tips for taking better smartphone photos:

  • Pay attention to the light: The quality of your photos will depend on the quality of the light. Natural light is usually the best, but you can also use artificial light if you need to.
  • Experiment with different angles: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different angles when you’re taking photos. This can help you to create more interesting and dynamic photos.
  • Get close to your subject: If you want to capture the details of your subject, get close to it. This will help you to create more intimate and engaging photos.
  • Be patient: Sometimes, the best photos are the ones that you take after you’ve been patient and waited for the right moment. So don’t be afraid to take your time and wait for the perfect shot.

Photography Veteran Robin V Shares 3 Steps to Creative Business Growth

Photography Veteran Robin V Shares 3 Steps to Creative Business Growth

In the dynamic realm of celebrity photography, where creativity intertwines with intuition, Robin V rises above the rest, redefining the essence of capturing fame through her lens. With an unwavering passion and a distinct perspective, she effortlessly navigates the intricacies of the entertainment industry, capturing the essence of each subject and immortalizing the moments that shape our collective cultural consciousness.

Hailing from the vibrant city of Baltimore, Maryland, Robin’s journey into photography took an untraditional path, paving the way for her unique artistic vision. Seeking a better opportunity, Robin left the city of Baltimore with nothing more than a one-way ticket, a dream, and a determination to make it on her terms.

Brand equals value

Since its inception, the photography industry has been dominated by white individuals. As with numerous other fields, Black professionals, particularly Black women, have encountered unique challenges and obstacles throughout their journey in this industry. Robin remarks, “From the beginning, I completely understood how important my branding would be to my business, and I branded with intention.” Knowing how she wants her brand to live and breathe, Robin creates a strategy that aligns with her vision and resonates with her target audience. “I would not show up to a photo shoot in sweatpants and a t-shirt. I come dressed to the 9’s. “I want my commissioner and client to know I am charging a premium price because I shoot luxury, and I am luxury. The total package, including myself, is a part of my value.”

Putting systems in place

Many photographers find joy and fulfillment in capturing moments and expressing their artistic vision, but monetizing their passion can be complex in a highly competitive industry like photography. “If you don’t have a strategy to scale your photography business, you will struggle,” comments Robin. ” Many photographers struggle because they love what they do but don’t have systems in place to ensure profitability.”

Finding the right balance between passion and profitability by implementing systems requires persistence, adaptability, and a willingness to navigate the challenges in the industry. “I love what I do,” remarks Robin. “I can do it with my eyes closed, but with no systems, you can get taken advantage of. Systems include handling inquiries, scheduling, photo shoots, editing, and rates. “Photography is an expensive profession; if you are not pricing correctly, you are working for free. As a Black woman, I had to learn my value, and I didn’t learn it until I knew my value.”

Stay Creative

Photographers can draw inspiration from a rich array of sources, fueling their creativity and pushing the boundaries of their art. Working as a model for visuals directed by iconic music video directors such as Hype Williams and Benny Boom, Robin became fascinated by the cameras and everything happening behind the scenes. “I find inspiration in movies and even social media,” notes Robin. “I am constantly asking myself what lighting and lens is used, was this on a built set or in a studio, and what time of day is the shot.”

“By being on sets with countless directors, I picked up aspects of lightening, placement, and creating perspective,” says Robin. Photography is about training your eye to see and look at your subject a certain way while shooting. This will separate you from the pack.”

Sukchulmok draws on children’s toys for Daejeon photography studio

Sukchulmok draws on children’s toys for Daejeon photography studio

Toy bricks and childhood creativity informed Seoul studio Sukchulmok‘s design of Curving Block, a tent-like photography studio in South Korea.

Located in Daejeon, the studio also provides a relaxation space for the client, which is a baby product company with headquarters surrounding the site.

Aiming to reflect the work of the client, Sukchulmok took cues from childhood toys such as wooden building blocks when designing the space.

Sukchulmok has created a relaxation space for a photography studio in Daejeon

“The intention was to capture the image of a company dealing with baby products with the ethos that space should resemble users,” lead architect Park Hyunhee told Dezeen.

“In the early days of design, we came up with simple forms such as children’s wooden block toys.”

Curving Block is distinguished by its arched, tent-like roof, which is crafted from semi-translucent polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and curves down to meet a series of concrete walls.

Due to the building’s position on a rental site, the studio’s design is intended to be easily disassembled.

“The current site was a rental site, so the building had to be easy to remove at the end of the contract,” said Hyunhee.

“I wanted to show flexible gestures in the building by reflecting the characteristics of the company, which makes baby products with eco-friendly bamboo fibre materials, and I thought PTFE materials were suitable.”

Curving Block comprises two intersecting arched volumes, accessed through wide glass doors over a brick-lined path that continues inside.

Inside, the open-plan relaxation space features bespoke furniture made by Sukchulmok using materials left over from the construction process.

“Furniture of various shapes and characteristics is made according to the gestures of space, or inspired by the layered appearance of building materials or the construction process,” said Hyunhee.

A long concrete workbench extends from a curved wall at one end to provide space for cooking, while bespoke chairs and tables – one of which follows the curves of the walls – create a dining space designed to reflect the form of the building.

Nestled behind a curved wall beyond the relaxation space is the product photography studio, which features a tall curved ceiling along with black-out curtains that can be extended across one wall of the room to block out the light.

“The narrower the field of view, the better the concentration, and on the contrary, the wider and empty space, the more room for thought,” said Hyunhee. “So many creative thoughts come out in a high space with a ceiling of more than three metres high.”

“We hope that natural light, curved walls, and furniture that shows excellent physical properties that smoothly enter beyond the tent in a large space will relieve users’ work fatigue and have time to imagine.”

Other South Korean projects recently featured on Dezeen include Sukchulmok’s addition of a cafe made from red bricks to the rooftop of an existing building and a colourless golf store with graphite-coated walls.

Determining your pricing as a beginner wedding photographer can be challenging. Factors such as your location, skill level and market demand should be considered. Researching local industry standards and analyzing your costs – including photography equipment, editing time, and travel – can help you set competitive rates. It’s important to strike a balance between attracting clients and valuing your time and expertise. As you gain experience and build a portfolio, you gradually can adjust your pricing to reflect your growing skill and reputation.

How do I sell myself as a wedding photographer?

To effectively make money with photography in the wedding industry, focus on showcasing your unique style, experience and professionalism. Create an impressive portfolio that demonstrates your expertise and captures the emotions and beauty of weddings. Develop a strong online presence through a professional website and social media platforms. Engage with potential clients by sharing your work, offering valuable content and maintaining a consistent brand image. Prioritize excellent customer service, build relationships and leverage word-of-mouth referrals to establish your reputation.

Do wedding photographers own the photos?

In most cases, wedding photographers retain the copyright and ownership of the photos they capture. However, they usually grant clients a license to use and print the images for personal use. It’s important to clearly communicate the terms of the agreement and the rights involved in a written contract before the wedding. Some photographers may offer additional services, such as providing high-resolution digital files or creating albums of wedding photos, for an additional fee.

Stills is a new design-oriented image licensing platform built by creatives, for creatives

Needless to say, the photographs on Stills are a far cry from stock imagery. Shot by in-demand photographers (all of whom are given artist-friendly fee splits, well above the industry average) the roster currently includes big names such as Jake Wangner, Charly Savely and Nirav Patel, among others.

These photographers are well-known in the commercial industry and regularly work with major brands such as Samsung, The North Face, Apple, Leica, and many more. They also have established and successful personal practices, meaning that Stills members are getting access to image-makers with a finely tuned sense for powerful, evocative photography, and a keen understanding of the medium’s crucial role in storytelling.

Importantly, Stills ensures that its most in-demand photos have a limited number of uses, so they aren’t replicated across lots of different campaigns. For added exclusivity, there is also the option for users to put a market freeze on specific images that they want to reserve only for their projects.

Finally, the team understands the frustration that comes with scrolling through huge databases looking for the photos you want. As such, Stills allows its users to search for specific colours, moods, photographers and bodies of work, and then offers them an intuitive board to organise their findings into. The team will even search for images themselves, free of charge, to make sure users find the perfect photos for their project.

Stills is due to launch later this summer and, upon signing up to the email waitlist through its website, It’s Nice That readers will be guaranteed access to the platform.

This Photographer Captured The Emotions Of Parents Welcoming Their Newborn Baby (32 Pics)

The arrival of a newborn is undoubtedly one of the most significant moments in a woman’s life. Even though it is the mother who goes through the physical process of childbirth, fathers often stand beside their women, supporting them, while trying to cope with an emotional rollercoaster of their own.

Kirstie Perez, who specializes in various fields of photography, is known for her unique and still niche photography genre, which is birth photography. Perez gets to spend time with women in labor, capturing the rawest emotions and reactions of parents-to-be during the first moments they meet their beloved child. The photographer skillfully documents this transformative phase as couples transition into parents.

INPEX 4U Challenge Lab Organizes Photography Contest for

High School Students to Promote Regional Attractions

Tokyo, JapanINPEX CORPORATION(INPEX) announced today that its local community empowerment program INPEX 4U Challenge Lab (I4UCL) has organized a photography contest designed to promote the attractions of the areas and communities served by city gas companies to which INPEX supplies wholesale natural gas. The areas include Tokyo Metropolis and Chiba, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, Yamanashi, Nagano, Niigata, Yamagata, Akita and Toyama prefectures.

The photography contest targeting high school students opened at noon on June 20, 2023, and is co-organized by a group of city gas companies including Ashikaga Gas Co., Ltd., Enecle Co., Ltd., Otaki Gas Co., Ltd, Saitama Gas Co., Ltd., Tokyo Gas Yamanashi Co., Ltd., Nihonkai Gas Co., Ltd., Bushu Gas Co., Ltd., Honjo Gas Co., Ltd., Matsumoto Gas Co., Ltd., and Yoshida Gas Co., Ltd.

The contest aims to expand the number of non-residents involved in various ways with the local regions and communities as well as visitors to these areas as a means of sustainable revitalization to address the issue of depopulation among younger generations. The theme of the contest is based on high school students promoting the local regions and communities by taking and entering photographs depicting local food. In doing so, the students are encouraged to interact with each other, re-discover the attractions of their regions and deepen their affinity to their communities.

INPEX launched I4UCL in 2019to help enhance the corporate value and reputation of city gas companies in Japan to which it supplies natural gas by leveraging activities that support the needs of the local communities served by the companies. Since then, INPEX has partnered city gas companies to implement study sessions and service demonstrations starting with an open innovation event in the first year. This is the first instance in which INPEX organizes an I4UCL initiative jointly with multiple city gas companies.

INPEX will continue to utilize the I4UCL framework to support the needs and expectations of the regions and communities, and promote activities contributing to society with a focus on education and the development of the next generations of local citizens.
