CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QC Life) – Tuttle walked us through the artistic process step by step:

1. Take a digital image (with your cell phone!) and print it on transparency paper.

2. Mix platinum and palladium minerals with light-sensitive chemistry and apply it to a paper, specifically made for this purpose.

3. Let it dry for 5 minutes.

4. Put the negative and the paper in a contact printing frame.

5. “Bake” the printing frame in a UV – Lightbox.

6. Pour developer on the negative to uncover the image.

A photographer who worked with Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs has revealed the time he flew 5,000 miles to take his portrait only for Jobs to tell him in no uncertain terms that he didn’t want his picture taken.

Jobs was infamous for not being comfortable around photographers; and for this week’s 40th anniversary of the Apple Macintosh, photographer Will Mosgrove appeared on the Macworld podcast where he regaled his sometimes difficult relationship with the legendary Jobs.

Mosgrove, who shot the photo that appeared in the very first issue of Macworld magazine 40 years ago, was commissioned by Apple to fly to Sweden in the mid-1980s to get a shot of Jobs looking like a “world leader” while in a helicopter with a beautiful Swedish castle and countryside in the background.

Mosgrove says that Jobs initially tried to sit in the front set of the chopper which Mosgrove politely objected to because he wouldn’t be able to get a photo of him while sitting there.

After begrudgingly sitting in the backseat, the chopper took off and headed toward the castle where a dinner was being held.

“And as I’m getting my camera out and ready to go, he said, ‘You know, I don’t think I want any pictures’,” Mosgrove regales the Macworld podcast.

“And I said, ‘Well, okay, you know, they flew me from California to Sweden to get this shot and you know, I’m here and I’m ready to do it. Can we just think about this?’”

Jobs, suddenly prickly, repeated his assertion, “I don’t think I really want any photographs.”

“I said, ‘Well how about if we take some photographs and you take a look at them? If you don’t want to use them that’s fine with me, but you know, Tom Hughes (who was the artistic director) said can you get this shot, and I said, yeah, and I need to come back with something.’ And he goes, ‘I don’t want any photographs.’”

Mosgrove says there was then an excruciating 30 seconds of awkward silence as he played with his camera. But as he went to pick it up one more time as the castle loomed into view, Jobs exclaimed, “No f***ing photos.”

“So I went, okay, put the camera away, and his aide was kind of saying, ‘don’t, that’s it, we’re done’,” says Mosgrove.

Mosgrove says the incident was explained to the artistic director who was understanding of the situation but the photographer was annoyed that he had traveled so far and spent a week in Sweden without a single frame of Apple’s visionary leader.

“I felt like crap, but Steve wasn’t going to go for it. And I couldn’t, you know, not do that [relented]. He would have flipped the bird or gotten really p***ed off at me. That’s his kind of relationship with photographers who he just didn’t like being around.”

Mosgrove did take a portrait of Jobs for the very first edition of the Macworld magazine in 1984, but even that shoot wasn’t without incident.

“We did a couple of quick Polaroids and made sure everything was looking good, lighting-wise. Shot about five minutes or so, and he said, ‘Are we done?’ And I said, ‘We can be, I’d like to try a couple of different things.’ And he said, ‘Well, I’d like to try something, too’,” says Mosgrove.

“So, he started making this really kind of interesting, zany kind of symbols with his hands, and I kind of looked over to the people from Macworld and they were just kind of shaking their heads. We played along with it and shot some film, and it was literally over in probably 15 to 20 minutes.”

Mosgrove believes that Jobs’ dislike of photographers was due to having very little patience when someone else tried to tell him what to do.

“The whole thing with photography, I’d say, ‘Steve, can you try this?’ I’m giving him suggestions on things to do. And he’s so used to saying, ‘Here’s what we’re going to do. And here’s why, and I’m just going to do it’.”

To underline his point, Mosgrove is far from the only photographer Jobs gave a hard time: in August, PetaPixel reported on how difficult it was to get a photo of Jobs with the first-ever iMac in 1998.

Q> Your focus primarily lies in capturing people, especially through portraiture. What draws you to this particular craft?

Ellie> A fascination and interest in people, wanting to learn from and understand everyone and anyone around me!

Q> Tell us about your favourite project to date and why it has a sweet spot in your heart. 

Ellie> The first long-term project I worked on was photographing and interviewing women in the grime scene. I was in university when I started it and was still very much learning how to take photographs and had never interviewed anyone before. I learnt so much from that project, how to create a visual style through my imagery, how to organise shoots, how to design and self-publish a photo-book, as well as learning so much about myself, those I was photographing and the scenes I was immersed in. That project will always have a special place in my heart, and is a reminder of how far I’ve come as a photographer on my journey. 

Q> Are there any emerging photography styles/trends you are currently interested in and looking to introduce to your work?

Ellie> I’m interested in taking a deeper socially engaged approach to my work, making it a more collaborative experience. Whether that’s through adding elements they’ve created, such as their own artwork or writing, or working together to create an aesthetic that they feel honestly represents them in an authentic way. .

Q> What are your career hopes and goals for 2024?

Ellie> I would love to start a new social documentary project, and to hopefully get it funded.

Q> And to finish off, tell us a NERDY fact about yourself. 

Ellie> I get very excited about alternative printing methods, for instance taking a two-day algae printing workshop with photographer Laura Pannack last summer. So much fun!

Coming to you from Videomaker, this informative video delves into the intricacies of bokeh, explaining not just what it is, but also how it can be intentionally manipulated to elevate the emotional impact of visual narratives. The video breaks down the five key factors that affect bokeh: aperture, focal length, the distance between the camera and the subject, the subject’s distance from the background or foreground, and the number of aperture blades in the lens. Mississippi may bear the scars of a history of poverty and racial oppression, but it is rich with the natural beauty of its landscape and the voices that have risen out of that landscape. Those voices created stories and music that entranced the world.

Award-winning poet Ann Fisher-Wirth, who lives in Oxford, has always had a keen ear for those voices and particularly in the images of Mississippi’s haunting landscape seen in Mississippian Maude Schuyler-Clay’s photography.

The poetry Fisher-Wirth created out of Schuyler-Clay’s images is the centerpiece of Theatre Oxford’s production of Mississippi: Poetry in Photography at the Powerhouse Tuesday, January 30, at 7:30 pm. The production is based on Fisher-Wirth and Schuyler-Clay’s book of poetry and photography, simply titled Mississippi. Books will be available both before and after the production, and Fisher-Wirth and Schuyler-Clay will be signing copies after the show.

“I love the rich orality of Mississippi culture, and I have tried to express it,” Fisher-Wirth writes in the foreword of her and Schuyler-Clay’s compelling book. “To write these poems, I listen to the voices and I listen to Maude’s photography. Out of silence, the poems emerge.”

Directed by René Pulliam, Mississippi: Poetry in Photography will feature cast members performing the poetry that Schuyler-Clay’s photography inspired in Fisher-Wirth. Her words and Schuyler-Clay’s images create a complex tapestry from both historical and modern voices.

The poems and photographs create mini-stories that range from moments in history such as Emmett Till’s fateful encounter with Carolyn Bryant in Money, Mississippi, in 1955 to moments of legend such as bluesman Robert Johnson’s encounter with the devil on the crossroads of Highways 61 and 49.

Some of the poems speak to ageless stories such as a teenager’s crush on a visitor from another country, the tragic death in childbirth of a young mother and her child, the memories embedded in a decaying shack slowly sinking into floodwaters.
