kishin shinoyama who photographed john lennon & yoko ono’s last album cover dies at 83

Photographer Kishin shinoyama passes away of old age

Celebrated Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama has passed away at the age of 83. He was the one who shot the 1980 album cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Double Fantasy, where the couple was seen kissing. It was also one of the last photos of John Lennon, three months before he died. In 2015, Kishin Shinoyama introduced his portrait series of the day of shooting John Lennon and Yoko Ono with Taschen.

The series of images, published in 174 pages, peers through the intimate moments of the couple. It was Yoko Ono who requested the photographer to photograph and create the book Double Fantasy. Today, it serves as a memento of the revered Japanese photographer and a recollection of the couple’s photographs within a five-day shoot, portraits that Yoko Ono calls ‘images of my happiest time.’

Remembering Kishin Shinoyama

Kishin Shinoyama started as an advertising photographer while he was still a student at Nihon University. By 1968, he was working as a freelance photographer, taking portraits of celebrities including Yukio Mishima, Momoe Yamaguchi, Rie Miyazawa, John Lennon and Yoko Ono. During this period, his photographs also documented Japan’s landscape, unveiling snapshots of fashion shows, dancers, theater troops, and even student protests.

Moreover, he became a known photographer for his artistic nude images of women, a recurring theme throughout his portfolio. The essence of expressionism and naturalism in photography surfaced in Kishin Shinoyama’s works. At times, his lens gazed at the vulnerability of his subjects, be they pop icons and celebrities or women in artistic environments. Kishin Shinoyama also attracted fame for his nude photographs of the actresses Rie Miyazawa and Kanako Higuchi and author Yukio Mishima, whose picture was taken before he took his own life.

Pro Photographers Watch Out! AI Is Coming for You. Or Is It? |

Pro Photographers Watch Out! AI Is Coming for You. Or Is It? |

One of the most commonly asked questions I get is about AI and my opinion on it. Being an artist puts you at risk of AI taking your job, or so it would seem. In fact, I believe that AI is creating jobs. Here is why you should not worry about AI and what to focus on instead.

Introduction

I’ve played around with AI and now often use AI to complete various boring and time-consuming tasks. Sometimes, when a text conversation gets boring and annoying, I use AI-generated responses for the fun of it. AI is a very fun tool, after all. Just imagine that a few years back, everyone was having a gag at what Boston Dynamics was doing, but now, their robots are in state agencies and possibly some militaries even. It is only fair to say that while tech is not advancing as fast as it was 20 years ago, it is still going at light speed. AI was something most of us thought of as a concept for the distant future. Sure, from the mouth of Elon Musk, most things sound like crazy ideas and concepts. However, the advent of AI happened almost too soon, and it took the world by storm. Suddenly, teachers had to check for plagiarism and AI-generated content, copywriters lost their jobs to Mr. ChatGPT, and artists started to fear for theirs because AI art was getting scary good.

The Industrial (AI) Revolution

There is no doubt that AI will take some jobs away. Any leap in technology does. The internal combustion engine meant a global decrease in horse population, while the industrial revolution put millions of workers out of their jobs. Everyone was replaced by tech. The human factor became less and less. Or so it would seem. While horses did disappear quite fast because they had one role, people did not. You see, we as humans have the magic ability to learn, or at least some of us sort of do.

How Are You With New Tech?

With any new technology that enters the market, there are usually two groups of people: the ones riding the wave and the ones being drowned by it. Learning new tech is not an easy task, no matter how high your IQ is. There is a learning curve associated with massive breakthroughs, which AI undoubtedly is. Let’s look at the end of film photography and the advent of digital. Because all of a sudden, there was a completely new way of producing images, and you no longer had the limitation of your roll, some photographers jumped on the bandwagon. However, many, especially the stubborn professionals, were convinced that digital would never be as high quality as film and would only be a short-lived adventure. Real photography would always be on film. Interestingly enough, before William Eggleston became famous, color film photography was also seen as not real photography. In short, not too long after digital cameras became a thing, more and more people switched, leaving the old guard behind.

While film photography is experiencing a gain in popularity now, especially with the younger generation, this is simply due to the nostalgic time that it reminds them of. The same can be said about the early digital point-and-shoot cameras, which every 20-year-old has. The point is, photographers who refused to use digital cameras, in the majority of cases, went out of business. The people who were really losing jobs, though, were the lab technicians. Their skill was working with a medium that was now seen as outdated. The clever ones among those quickly learned digital photography and became editors, digital techs, and so on. You see, a good tech can develop a roll of film, but also a digital negative. It is also worth saying that digital photography was only a tool that made the jobs of photographers easier. Lastly, film is still very popular with fashion and portrait photographers.

You might already have an idea of the point I am trying to make here. AI will be sort of like film in the sense of it being a tool, and while it will take away some jobs, for sure, it will also create many more. In more detail, AI will replace all of those photographers that take pack shots and catalog images against a white background. Just like Photoshop and 3D rendering took away the jobs of car photographers. If you are doing a job where all you do is press a button, I have bad news for you. This is the sort of job that can be easily done by AI, cheaper and better. One thing you can do to stay ahead of the curve is to learn AI and find a job that combines both your photography skills and AI. Those photographers will become AI artists, or perhaps AI technicians.

For the rest of us that do slightly more creative photography, we are safe. AI is a tool that we can use for our creativity. Instead of worrying about it taking our job, we should focus on having a strong vision, building the list of references and getting inspired. After all, what we bring to the job is ourselves. I can give my assistant my camera and tell him to take the shot. He will not do it the same way I would. It is the process and the thought behind the image that counts. AI can give you a good outcome, but it will always take a human to tell the AI what to do. AI is unlikely to have a strong creative voice that is individual to a human being. It might get close to what a child can do, but not more.

Don’t Worry About AI, Do This Instead

Creativity is a very human process. I can’t really think of an example other than us. We are moved and affected by billions of thoughts and experiences. These form our personality, which then directly impacts our creativity. Your childhood can dictate your taste in art and music. I know for sure that my childhood experience with ballet is the reason for my photographic style now. So, instead of worrying about AI, worry about missing an exhibition or a performance.

What are your thoughts on AI? Are you worried it will take your job? Let us know in the comments below.

Debunking 10 Myths About Being a Freelance Photographer

Debunking 10 Myths About Being a Freelance Photographer

Embarking on a career as a freelance photographer is an exciting journey filled with creativity and flexibility. However, like any profession, there are several misconceptions that can cloud the reality of this dynamic field. Let’s debunk 10 common myths about being a freelance photographer and shed light on the truths that lie beneath the surface.

Myth 1: Freelance Photographers Have Unpredictable Income:

Reality: While income can fluctuate, successful freelance photographers build a steady stream of clients and income through effective marketing, networking, and diversifying their services. With strategic planning, freelancers can achieve financial stability. Often they have various streams of income which could also include writing and teaching (like I do).

Myth 2: Freelancers Have No Work-Life Balance:

Reality: Freelancers can set their own schedules, allowing for a better work-life balance. However, discipline is crucial to avoid overworking or procrastination. Establishing boundaries and a routine helps maintain balance. While I can take off for an afternoon at the movies, enjoy lunch with friends, I often find I always seem to be working. Oh, and that old adage “I quit my 9 to 5 day job so I could work 24/7” is not that far from the truth. As my own boss, I’m pretty much always on the clock.

Myth 3: Owning Expensive Equipment is Essential:

Reality: While quality gear enhances your work, success is more about skill and creativity. Many successful photographers started with basic equipment and gradually upgraded as their business grew. Focus on honing your skills rather than chasing the latest gadgets. While many of USD love tech we can always hire it too. But there is something about all that pretty new gear which is just too tempting for some of us! (Look up G.A.S.).

Myth 4: Freelance Photography is a Lonely Job:

Reality: Freelance photography involves collaboration with clients, models, and other professionals. Networking events, workshops, and online communities provide ample opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, fostering a sense of community. While many of us like to work in solitude most of the time, we never get lonely.

Myth 5: Success Comes Overnight:

Reality: Building a successful freelance photography career takes time and effort. It requires continuous learning, honing skills, building a portfolio, and establishing a solid reputation. Patience and persistence are key to long-term success. While it seems to happen quickly for some, you’ll probably find they have been quietly working away for years.

Myth 6: Freelancers Only Take Photos:

Reality: Freelance photographers wear many hats. Besides capturing images, they handle client communication, marketing, accounting, and administrative tasks. A well-rounded skill set is essential for managing the business effectively. To be brutally honest I spend more time marketing, networking and editing than I do taking actual photos.

Myth 7: You Need a Formal Education:

Reality: While formal education can provide a foundation, many successful freelance photographers are self-taught or learn through practical experience. A strong portfolio and networking skills often carry more weight than a degree. It’s practising and honing skills that make a photographer, as well as being good at marketing oneself. Sometimes being an assistant or second photographer on set, weddings and such can gain you valuable experience. And don’t forget the need to be continually learning new techniques, gear and such.

Myth 8: Clients Will Come to You Automatically:

Reality: Building a client base requires proactive marketing and networking. Freelancers must actively seek opportunities, attend events, and showcase their work online to attract clients. Success comes to those who are proactive in their approach. And consistent at it too. Remember that 24/7 line…it’s true.

Myth 9: Low Rates Attract More Clients:

Reality: Undervaluing your work can undermine your credibility and the industry as a whole. Setting fair, competitive rates reflects professionalism and attracts clients who value quality. Focus on providing value rather than undercutting prices. Don’t undervalue yourself either. That is something that can be quite difficult to overcome.

Myth 10: Freelancers Have No Job Security:

Reality: While freelancers don’t have traditional job security, they have the freedom to diversify their income streams. Creating multiple revenue streams, such as stock photography, workshops, or teaching, can provide stability in an ever-changing market. I’m not saying it’s easy, in fact, I have a partner who has a stable job and income, so I have security there. But that is not the case for everyone. Often working as a freelance photographer as a side hustle as you build your business is a safe way to build a strong foundation before jumping in full-time.

Conclusion: Being a freelance photographer is a rewarding and viable career path, but it’s essential to separate fact from fiction. By dispelling these myths, aspiring photographers can better navigate the challenges and embrace the true opportunities that freelance photography offers. Success in this field is not about conforming to stereotypes but rather about adapting, evolving, and showcasing one’s unique creative vision.

PHILLIPSTON — A casual kayak ride on Tully Lake has become an award-winning photo for Norm Eggert.

The picture shows Norm’s wife Cheryl near the lake’s boat launch, framed by trees in the morning light, and was chosen by Mass Audubon as the winner in the “People in Nature Over 18” category in the “Picture This: Your Great Outdoors” contest. Held each year, the contest saw over 5,000 entries from across the state.

Norm, a Phillipston resident, said he submitted nature and animal photos to the Mass Audubon contest, as well as the one of his wife on Tully Lake. That particular photo was taken on taken on Aug. 12, 2012. Norm said he was surprised to learn that he was among the winners.

“There are some excellent nature photographers in the area, some beautiful photos,” he said. “I was very happy.”

Norm said his wife had stopped paddling for a moment and he just knew it was a great opportunity, particularly with the lighting and the trees framing the scene. He used a Canon 50D with 28-105 millimeter lens and said the brand has been a favorite of his for some time. Norm said lighting is the best indicator of the right time to take photos.

“The light was what really drew me to it,” he said. “If it had been taken in the middle of the day, it wouldn’t have worked so well.”

Norm added that Tully Lake, located in Royalston, is a great place to take photos.

“The best place to go is the river, Tully River,” said Norm. “It’s very quiet usually and if you’re there at the right time it’s very nice, very picturesque.”

The contest’s grand prize winner, Cheryl Rose of Hopkinton, will have her photo of a Sundew plant featured in “Explore,” Mass Audubon’s member newsletter. The 11 other winners, including Norm, will have their works used in future Mass Audubon products, with credit given to the photographers, according to a spokesperson.

Norm’s interest in photography started when a colleague at Paul Revere Life Insurance in Worcester started a photo club. Norm was asked by another photographer to help with a wedding assignment, and continued to photograph weddings for 40 years.

After he decided to stop doing wedding photography, Norm turned to taking pictures of nature, wildlife and community events. His web site— Norm Eggert Photography—features galleries of New England in the winter, community festivals, farms, Old Sturbridge Village, Quabbin Reservoir and much more.

Norm has also done volunteer photography for Fitchburg Art Museum and the Mount Grace Land Conservation Trust. For the last 28 years he’s taken on the role of a teacher, even working for Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner as an adjunct professor, teaching portrait, digital and commercial photography.

“I would say people are the specialty,” Norm said of his work. “I do event photography for several organizations. I also really enjoy people, doing what they’re actually doing.”

GTA 5 Online Pug location: Where to find it for Wildlife Photography?

December 2023’s GTA 5 Online The Chop Shop update introduced animals to the multiplayer’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version. A Wildlife Photography Challenge has now been added to it, tasking players with taking pictures of certain animals and birds in exchange for cash and RP. One of the animals in this challenge is the Pug, which can be found in a posh Los Santos neighborhood.

That said, finding the dog can take some time as you will have to look around in a decently sized search area. With that said, here is where to find a Pug in Grand Theft Auto 5 Online for the Wildlife Photography Challenge.

While the Wildlife Photography Challenge has only been added to Grand Theft Auto 5 Online’s PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version, the January 4, 2024, weekly update added Peyote Plants to all versions of the game. These plants can be found in the open world, and turn your character into an animal, bird, or aquatic creature when consumed.

You can control these creatures while the Peyote Plant hallucination lasts, but the actions will be limited. But just like the Wildlife Photography Challenge, GTA Online Peyote Plant locations are not marked on the map.

According to MLive, Leipprandt was flying 4,000 feet in a helicopter with his camera above the Rose Bowl. With a little luck and impeccable timing, Leipprandt captures the B2 Spirit Bomber during a flyover of the stadium before the Michigan-Alabama game. Also according to MLive, Leipprandt said that he had to direct the pilot to the perfect spot above the stadium, since he was sitting on other side of the helicopter. And to add to the incredible moment, the photographer’s brother was with him who is is a U.S. Air Force veteran. After catching the now viral shot, the brothers made it on the ground in time to cheer the Wolverines on to a win.

Leipprandt, who’s from Traverse City, has taken other flyover photos at stadiums like Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State, as well as some shots with the Coast Guard.
