‘Sculptures for the people’
As you head into Detroit from the John C. Lodge Freeway, a giant Black fist confronts you. This sculpture, depicting the late boxer Joe Louis’ fist hanging from a tripod, has an attitude that seems to say, “I’m Detroit. I’m tough. I’m resilient. Don’t mess with me.”

Tar Heel Traveler, Sculpture Farm in Chatham County
For two decades, dozens of artists have gathered at a farm in Chatham County every September to showcase their work in a celebration of art and kindness. The tradition began in 2001 as a way to honor the victims of the September 11th attacks, but it has since evolved into a more general celebration of art and community. The event takes place on Saturdays in September, from 2pm to dark, with the final date being September 23rd.
