Muhammad Ali Center to open annual photography exhibit highlighting women in sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – The latest edition of the Muhammad Ali Center’s annual Shining A Light exhibition series is set to open on International Women’s Day, March 8.

This year’s focus is Women in Sports. The Ali Center says the exhibit will showcase the social and economic benefits of equal access to sports for women and girls around the world.

The exhibition series is part of the Shining a Light International Photography Contest, highlighting a different gender disparity topic each year. Previous iterations focused on women impacted by carceral systems, and access to clean water around the world, the release said.

Women in Sports will feature images that tell powerful stories of women and girls interacting with sport both in their local community and on the highest level. A judging panel narrowed the submissions down to 40 featured images after hundreds of photos were submitted by photographers from 54 countries.

Cash prizes were awarded for first, second, and third places overall.

Additional themes explored are Paralympians and inclusive sports, as well as the socioeconomic impact of sport, the release said.
