Some locations look like they were made for street photography, with their vibrance, energy, and overall vibe. However, you don’t need to go to any of these photogenic locations just to get great street photos. If you’re running out of ideas for your street photography, we found just the tips that may help get your out of that rut.
In the quick video above, Sydney photographer Tim Northey shares five tips and ideas for doing street photography in any location. These, he said, are simple techniques and suggestions that you can try and look out for. The goal is to help you get started and become more comfortable while shooting out in the streets.
One of the easiest of these tips is to look for scenes with interesting contrasts of light and shadow. This technique doesn’t only draw attention to the subject but also adds a touch of drama to your composition. Obviously, this works best during a nice, sunny day, and Northey described the ideal conditions for this — the sun is slightly lower in the sky, but not too low. So, it’s either a few hours after sunrise or before sunset.
Others, like creative blurring, slow shutter, and reflections are more on the experimental side, which not a lot of street photographers get into. But of course, as Northey also noted, there’s no right or wrong way to do street photography correctly. So, feel free to add an artistic touch to your street snaps!
