From stunning city landscapes to misty mountains, these are the sort of photographs you might expect to have been taken with a top-of-the-range camera – but they were actually all taken on smartphones.

Below is a selection of some of the best images and winning entries from the Mobile Photography Awards 2024.

The UK-based competition was launched this year by the British Photography Awards, in partnership with Samsung.

Photographs could be taken on any mobile device, with judges looking at six categories including: Portrait, Pet, Night Scenes, Zoom Photos, Landscapes and Food & Drink.

BPA Awards Director & Photographer, Hugo Donnithorne-Tait, said: ‘As photography continues to develop as a medium, it is clear that the way people take and enjoy photos is changing too. 

This portrait image, titled My Dad and the Greedy Gull, taken in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland, was captured on a Samsung Galaxy G20 5G by Lorraine Poole, who said: 'We were sitting in my car eating fish and chips for lunch when I noticed a great big greedy seagull peeking through the sunroof at my dad'

‘More and more photographs today are being captured only because people have a top camera in their pocket when they need it. This means so many more of life’s moments are being documented.

‘We are so proud to be able to launch this Mobile Photography Awards. Samsung have a fantastic history of innovation and pioneering new imaging technologies, so who better to co-host this new kind of photography competition? 

‘Being able to award fantastic Galaxy S24 Ultras to the winners of the competition – and host Mobile workshops means we can continue to transform people’s photography and keep developing our craft alongside this amazing new technology.’

Capturing the Heron Tower, in London, this photograph was taken on a Sony Xperia 1 V. The unnamed photographer explained: 'A couple of months ago, I came up with an idea that involved using a smartphone to take long exposures at night in the City of London'

Titled Two Heads, One Heart, this stunning photograph was taken on a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra in Hellesdon, Norwich, by father Dotun, who captured the image after his son fell asleep next to him

An image of a landscape in the Isle of Skye, taken on an iPhone 14, by photographer Andrew Hoyle, who said: 'Having got up before sunrise, most of the walk up to the Storr viewpoint was done in almost total darkness. The weather went from foggy, to snowy, to gale-force winds and I was pretty convinced my efforts were in vain. Patience paid off, however'

Showing an adorable dog during their bath time, this photograph won the Pet category at the Mobile Photography Awards. It was taken in Scotland by Ross Page, who used a Samsung S23 Ultra to capture the image, titled Bath Night
