The Quad-City Times and Dispatch-Argus have had some incredible photographers through the years. Our current photographers are helping continue that tradition.

Both Katelyn Metzger and Roy Dabner are doing some impressive work. Traditionally, newsroom photographers provide images that go along with a reporter’s story — and we still do that — but I’ve urged the photographers to work independently as well, seeking photo stories and galleries. The digital analytics show readers are pleased with the results.

Roy started the year off with a breathtaking gallery of eagle photos. Katelyn’s recent gallery on Iowa Hawkeye standout Kate Martin visiting Zimmerman Honda generated thousands of pageviews.

The newsroom is hiring!

We have three open positions in the Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus newsroom. As we speed toward spring and summer, we have a 10-week internship available. We have many candidates and have started the interviewing process. Anyone who wants to apply should do so by the end of the day, Monday, March 11.

We also have a reporter position open to cover Moline, Rock Island and East Moline. Beyond that we are hiring a news coordinator, someone to coordinate incoming communications to the newsroom. Both the news reporter and news coordinator jobs are full-time and include a full benefits package.

If interested, click the links above or go to https://lee.net/careers/, select “See all career opportunities,” and then add “Davenport” as the location.

Newsroom continues to evolve with training

Our Digital Editor Grace Kinnicutt just attended 2024 DePaul University FOIA Fellows on DePaul’s Loop campus Feb. 29-March 1.
At FOIA Fellows, journalists from Illinois and Wisconsin were invited to learn how to be better investigative reporters. Grace heard from multiple longtime journalists, mainly those who cover the Chicagoland area, and asked questions, received advice and tips on what to look for in certain FOIAs, how often and what things should be FOIA’d, and how to find stories when digging through pages of information.
Grace is a key member of the newsroom and will use this training to help guide reporters in Freedom of Information Act requests.
