Photographer captures the heartbreaking final moments of pets with their owners

Editor’s note: This article was originally published on February 11, 2022. It has since been updated.

Trigger warning: The article contains images and themes of animal death that readers may find disturbing.

The death of a beloved pet is no less heartbreaking than the demise of a family member or dear friend. Having had the privilege of experiencing their unconditional love, companionship, and comfort, even the thought of losing this integral part of your life can be hard. While we hope and pray that we never have to experience this crushing pain, there come times when you have to make the difficult decision of letting them go instead of making them suffer unnecessary pain and discomfort. In such cases, the final moments before goodbye bears the weight of a thousand words left unsaid and a yearning to hold on to them in any way possible.

These emotional moments are what photojournalist Ross Taylor captured in his “Last Moments” series. Taylor, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, photographed the intimate and heartbreaking moments between a pet and their owners in the seconds leading up to the animal’s death by euthanasia at home.

“My interest in this originated a few years back. A friend of mine at the time was going through intense grief over the pending death of her dog, who was very sick. Because she didn’t want the dog to be stressed by a visit to the clinic, she decided to have her pet euthanized at home. I had not heard of this, but was very moved by the idea,” he told Upworthy.

“Driven by this, I began researching it and reached out to a number of veterinary organizations. The first that responded was Lap of Love [a family-centered veterinary hospice and in-home animal euthanasia service] and within a month or so of contact, I began working with them,” added Taylor, who has been a photojournalist for over 20 years.

“We would contact families ahead of time to see who would be open to sharing their story with me – I only photographed those who were willing. I also offered each family the option of doing a portrait of them with their dog before their passing, as a tribute to them, if they wanted. It’s important to note that none of this could be done without the families allowing me to be there. They have my respect.”

“I think it’s important for people who are going through this process to know they’re not alone, that their grief should not be overlooked, nor minimized by others,” he explained. “It’s real, and it’s painful. I hope people, after seeing these images, will never say to someone else after they lost a pet, “Oh it’s just a dog, or, it’s just a cat.” It’s crucial to recognize, and respect, the pain that comes along with the loss of a pet.”

When asked how witnessing such grief and testaments to the undeniable bonds between humans and their animal companions has affected him personally, Taylor said: “In every possible way that I could have imagined. It’s been one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever documented. In almost every case, everyone was moved to tears, including me. I feel so sad for those going through this and my heart is more open to the grief that people feel.”

“My respect for veterinarians who work with end-of-life care has grown immensely. They’re impressive people and are some of the kindest I’ve met. The work they do is important,” he continued. “Also, the amount of people who have responded has been overwhelming. Scores of people have written to me, wanting to share their story. I’ve had some of the most touching emails and in fact, I just got a note the other day from someone who lost their cat. They sent me pictures of their last moments together. It was quite moving.”

Photography By Scott Farrell Is Coming To Natural History Museum

Photography By Scott Farrell Is Coming To Natural History Museum

“Dry Documentaries,” an exhibit by Long Island photographer Scott Farrell, will be on view in the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History’s Naturescape Gallery during July and August.

“Dry Documentaries” is a body of work that depicts both familiar and imagined landscapes while simultaneously exploring organic and abstract art forms. The landscapes, seascapes and abstract visions that make up this multi-part series are nonmanipulated images captured as camera raw files. Only minor contrast, color and tonal balance adjustments have been applied to the digital negatives. The images might initially seem to portray a scope that is vast and expansive when, in reality, they oftentimes measure less than eight to 24 inches in length or height.

Kenosha photography group using skills to help lighthouse owner

KENOSHA, Wis. — When Kenosha’s Thomas Corrao started a local sunrise photography group, he didn’t realize how popular it would soon become.

“It started off with five people and it’s grown now, we’re almost at 4,000,” Corrao said. “ And it’s only been a year and one month. It’s taken off.”

One of the group’s focal points is Kenosha’s North Pier Light House. It’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Kenosha.

“Since we have all these photographers taking good quality pictures, it would be fun to put a project together,” Kenosha photographer Mike Middleton said. “But we didn’t want to just do something that would be about us only, but something that could help our community as well.”

The group is creating a 2025 sunrise calendar with proceeds going towards much-needed repairs and improvements at the lighthouse.

The United States Coast Guard owned the lighthouse. It was purchased in 2011 by Kenosha residents Heather McGee and her husband John Burhani.

“The city was auctioning it off and my dad saw it,” Kenosha native Emily Burhani said. “He had been looking, he was an artist who was looking for a place for his art studio, and he did a lot of landscape stuff and a lot of sailboats. So what better place for your studio than the lighthouse?”

John Burhani died from a rare form of cancer shortly after closing on the property. McGee took care of it for years until recently being diagnosed with cancer.

Her daughter Emily is now in charge.

“It’s a big responsibility because it is such an iconic place in Kenosha,” Emily Burhani said. “So we try to keep up with it as much as we can.”

The lighthouse needs new paint, lights, and security cameras.

Corrao is seeking sponsorship for the calendar. It’s expected to be available in mid-November.

“We want to do something good for the city,” Corrao said.

Carrie Mae Weems Takes Intimate Photographs of A$AP Rocky and His Sons

Carrie Mae Weems Takes Intimate Photographs of A$AP Rocky and His Sons

To announce American rapper A$AP Rocky as Bottega Veneta’s latest brand ambassador, a new photography series by acclaimed photographer Carrie Mae Weems has been released.

“Portraits of Fatherhood”, with A$AP Rocky, commissioned by creative director Matthieu Blazy is a series of six images, released on Father’s Day in the US, that shows A$AP Rocky in a home setting with his two young sons, RZA and Riot Rose.

The tender photographs show the rapper “embodying and embracing fatherhood, parenthood, companionship, and family, while still working on all aspects of my career”, he said.

Weems’ iconic Kitchen Table Series, as well as her first solo exhibition, Family Pictures and Stories (1981-1982), was a rebuke to negative stereotypes and messaging around the African American family. With these photographs of A$AP Rocky, she says she wanted to show an honest representation of the Black family.

Weems answered some extra questions for T Australia about the collaboration:

T Australia: You’re perhaps best known for your Kitchen Table Series which, even though it was fictionalised, is not too dissimilar to these photographs which show great intimacy. How did you approach this work and what did you set out to achieve?

Weems: “We had lovely conversations together that really inspired my entire approach to making the piece. It was absolutely important to have these conversations, guiding the process. There were certain things Rocky wanted to do and see. Part of my responsibility was to listen, to articulate my vision through his, in that collaborative spirit. I think together we really did make something wonderful.

“There are still very few images of Black men with their children, certainly in the commercial and fashion space. I think what Rocky is attempting to do, to use his platform and stage, to use this relationship with Bottega Veneta, is very important. If there is something to be said, he is figuring out dynamic ways to say it and to be a part of that statement. It is quite remarkable and unique.”

T Australia: Art and luxury collaborations are becoming de rigeur – have you worked on commissions for brands before? How did the collaboration with Bottega Veneta come about?

Weems: “I learned that Matthieu [Blazy] had been studying me in school, which was surprising and lovely. We had this wonderful talk about directness, authenticity, and lack of flash, and that for Rocky himself, there was something about the Kitchen Table Series that drew him, and something about his ideas about becoming a father and a husband that mattered. In light of losing my own father, and in light of the importance of what he was trying to do as a person, a father, a parent, I knew I wanted to involve myself.”
