Overview
Toshio Shibata has travelled across Japan and the United States to make photographs that interweave elements of the landscape with human-made structures such as dams and bridges. His compositions, that often eliminate a horizon line or utilize unique vantage points, emphasize form, color, and texture while also reflecting on how humans have shaped the contemporary landscape.
Originally trained as a painter at Tokyo National University of Fine Art and Music, Shibata turned to photography in the mid-1970s and his work has been widely exhibited and collected at institutions around the world since. Three of his photographs were included in the Denver Art Museum’s 2018 exhibition, New Territory: Landscape Photography Today. Toshio Shibata lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
