Pedro Pegenaute photographs Spanish “foodscapes” for Venice Biennale

The Spanish pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale spotlights the country’s agro-architectural infrastructure, with imagery by photographer Pedro Pegenaute.

Pegenaute visited over 50 sites across the country to create a photography series that reveals the buildings and landscapes involved in producing everyday food products.

These locations include factory buildings, farms, distribution centres, workshops and a mix of agricultural and natural landscapes.

The photos form part of a research project called Total Recipes, which looks at 10 classic Spanish dishes and reveals the entire infrastructural chain involved in sourcing or producing each ingredient.

The series was commissioned by architects Eduardo Castillo-Vinuesa and Manuel Ocaña, curators of this year’s Spanish pavilion exhibition, Foodscapes.

With the tagline, “By eating, we digest territories”, the exhibition shines a light on Spain’s extensive food production systems and the architecture that facilitates them.

Each of the Total Recipes was selected and investigated by a different architectural studio, but Pegenaute was tasked with producing photographs for all 10. This involved visiting more than 50 different sites in Spain and beyond.

Among them were a sweet-flavouring laboratory in Barcelona, a shipyard in Viga, a pig farm in Salamanca and a cork production facility in Portugal.

In a Dezeen exclusive, Pegenaute has selected a favourite shot for each recipe. Read on to see all 10:

Drinking Forests: a Metabolic Recipe of WineDrinking Forests: a Metabolic Recipe of Wine

Recipe: Drinking Forests: a Metabolic Recipe of Wine
Project author: Urbanitree (Daniel Ibañez, Vicente Guallart) and Manuel Bouzas
Location: Finsa, Santiago de Compostela

For a recipe highlighting the role of forests in the production of wine, Pegenaute visited manufacturers of timber and cork products.

“This photo captures the pine log collection area at the Finsa factory and the start of the production line for the wooden crates used for wine bottles,” said Pegenaute.

“The tongs of a lorry lift these like chopsticks and deposit them on a conveyor belt of another machine that skins them until they are bare. From there, they will go through different processes until, in this case, they are turned into wooden wine crates.”

Project author: Lucía Jalón Oyarzun
Location: Lucta, Barcelona

This project saw Pegenaute explore the factories involved in the production of Almojábanas, a type of fritter made from flour and cheese, coated with cinnamon and honey.

“This image is of shelves in a Lucta sweet-flavouring laboratory,” said Pegenaute.

“This is where the raw materials used as ingredients for the production of liquid flavourings for human consumption are stored and sorted. For several days after my visit, every time I opened the camera bag, the aroma that was trapped in it that day came out again.”

Project author: S&AA (Federico Soriano, Dolores Palacios)
Location: Planta Biometanización, Pinto

This recipe explores the practices of reusing leftover food, and of producing fermented or autolysed food. Ingredients are macerated using Garum sauce, a strong-flavoured condiment.

The project took Pegenaute to a biomethanation and composting plant on the outskirts of Madrid.

Project author: Aldayjover (Iñaki Alday, Margarita Jover, Jesús Arcos, Francisco Mesonero)
Location: Presa de Susqueda, Girona

A project tracing the impact of paella led to a river delta in Girona and the architecture involved in managing it.

“This is the interior of the Susqueda Dam, built on the Ter River by the engineer and architect, Arturo Rebollo in 1968,” said Pegenaute.

“The interior of this signature dam has the capacity to touch your emotions. Its silence is deafening; only the dripping of the rain filtering in from a corner could be heard.”

Project author: Common Accounts (Igor Bragado + Miles Gertler)
Location: Granja Valle de Odieta, Caparroso, Navarre

An exploration of the whey protein powder used to make protein shakes took Pegenaute to dairy industry structures used to grow herd feed, raise cows and extract milk.

“This is the interior of the largest rotary milking parlour in Spain, which belongs to the Valle de Odieta farm in Caparroso,” said the photographer.

Recipe: Polbo á Granxa (Galician-Style Octopus)
Project author: Institute for Postnatural Studies (Gabriel Alonso, Pablo Ferreira Navone, Yuri Tuma, Matteo Guarnaccia, Karol Poliwka, Clara Benito)
Location: Puerto de Corme, A Coruña

This project looks at the Galician gastronomic culture of fishing and cooking octopus, and how it has led to construction of the world’s first octopus farm in Spain.

Pegenaute visited the region to explore both the traditional and modern infrastructures of this practice.

“This is Rosa, who is making an octopus pot in the hangar where the women who form the Asociación de mujeres Tejedoras de Nasas work,” he said.

Project author: GFA2 (Guillermo Fernández-Abascal) and Fake Industries (Urtzi Grau)
Location: Astillero Freire, Vigo

The global logistics involved in producing tinned squid include fishing in the South Atlantic Blue Hole, freezing in Indonesia and Yemen, packaging in the north of Spain, and shipping around the world.

Pegenaute photographed a shipyard involved in this product journey.

“This is the ship-access scaffolding,” he said. “Without a ship to climb, this ladder will take you wherever your imagination wants to go.”

PrEP BreadPrEP Bread

Recipe: PrEP Bread
Project author: Ivan L Munuera, Pablo Saiz del Río and Vivian Rotie
Location: Delta del Ter, Basses d’en Coll, Giron

To trace the geographies involved in gluten-free bread, the recommended accompaniment to a type of medical treatment called Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Pegenaute visited locations where ingredients are sourced.

“This is a rice paddy flooded by water from the Ter River Delta,” said Pegenaute.

“I am a huge fan of this kind of photograph because of the semi-abstraction. You have to spend time looking at it to see what it shows.”

Ghost TortillaGhost Tortilla

Project author: Lucia Tahan
Location: Granja Legaria, Navarra

With “ghost kitchens” tapping into the demand for traditional Spanish dishes on delivery, Pegenaute looked at the infrastructure behind egg production.

“These are hens for egg production at the Legaria Farm in Navarra,” said the photographer.

“In this space, the clucking of the hens in unison is a soft sound with a contained volume, but it is precisely this, in addition to its constancy, that makes it strident.”

Project author: C+ Arquitectas (Nerea Calvillo, María Buey González, Manuel Alba Montes)
Location: Finca El Encinar de Montejo, Salamanca

For a project exploring the ingredients of the popular Spanish croquette, Pegenaute visited a breeding facility for the Iberian pigs that supply the pork.

“Some will see a window, and others what it hides behind its dirt,” said the photographer.

Generative AI may be the next AK-47

Generative AI may be the next AK-47

At the start of the Cold War, a young man from southern Siberia designed what would become the world’s most ubiquitous assault rifle.

The AK-47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova, was never patented and thus easily reproducible. It is light and highly portable, making it easy to smuggle across borders. The AK-47 is also renowned for its simplicity: With very little training, most combatants, including children, can strip and clean one in minutes.

Decades later, the AK-47 (along with its variants) may be the most widely available military weapon on the planet. Even its inventor, Mikhail Kalashnikov, was surprised by its widespread uptake: “It was like a genie out of the bottle,” he reportedly said. “It began to walk all on its own, and in directions I did not want.”

The AK-47 and other light weapons have changed how conflicts are waged, where, and by whom. Though not designed for harmful purposes, the generative AI tools that have swept into the public spotlight in recent months may follow a similarly destructive path.

AI has the potential to change how wars are waged on a scale unseen since the rise of weapons like the AK-47. But few people are thinking about how these technologies will shape “forgotten conflicts” and humanitarian crises – including most humanitarian agencies.

AI engineers and enthusiasts may bristle at comparing a deadly weapon to generative AI, examples of which include GPT4, text-to-image models like Stable Diffusion and DALL-E 2, or Eleven Labs’ speech synthesis and voice-cloning tools. ChatGPT certainly does: When I asked the language model about this analogy, it replied that my prompt was “potentially offensive” (it did not specify to whom) and that “it is not appropriate or respectful to compare a life-saving technology like AI to a weapon of war”.

There are, however, key similarities: accessibility, portability, and simplicity.

The engineering behind generative AI is complex, but the tools themselves can be used by anyone with internet access. Their use isn’t constrained by state boundaries nor adequately regulated (yet). And, at this stage, many of these tools are still free or virtually free.

“Generative AI, we’re told, is meant to support human creativity, generate new forms of art, and simplify marketing. But this fails to account for other incentives driving demand and influencing its design.”

In the wrong hands, generative AI could create audio or visual content in support of targeted propaganda and disinformation campaigns, turning the proverbial “fog of war” into a murk so dark and dense that only the most sophisticated tools will spot fact amid the fiction. This could make it harder to bring warring parties to the peace table, or prevent those fleeing conflict from accessing life-saving humanitarian assistance or finding refuge across a border.

Just as the social media giants of the last decade failed to prevent misinformation and hate from weaponising their networks, today’s tech firms are not designing AI with conflicts in mind. They shouldn’t be relied on to build in the necessary guardrails to protect against misuse.

Generative AI, we’re told, is meant to support human creativity, generate new forms of art, and simplify marketing. But this fails to account for other incentives driving demand and influencing its design.

While China and the United States are battling to achieve supremacy in and through AI, so too are the few firms who have the data, computing power, and capital required to develop the technology.

One notable tech titan recently argued that increased government investment could enable greater technological innovation in support of US national security and defence. As the bioethicist and technology expert Wendell Wallach has warned, the commercial and political incentives underpinning advanced technologies like AI are merging.

This should be particularly alarming to the many humanitarian agencies who hold neutrality as a guiding principle for their operations and partnerships. These agencies should urgently reflect on how generative AI might affect the 2 billion people who live in the world’s conflict areas.

Responding to my prompts, ChatGPT noted that “efforts must be made to ensure that the development and deployment of such technologies are governed by ethical principles and regulations to prevent their misuse”.

But such boilerplate responses on ethics leave us with more questions: How will AI be regulated in places where the rule of law is weak? How will tech firms designing AI ensure their tech is “governed by ethical principles”, particularly in light of recent layoffs? What happens when these tools fall into the hands of non-state armed groups? And how will refugees and humanitarian actors protect themselves from the potential harms?

Whatever the answers, it’s safe to say that the genie is now out of the bottle.

I Want to See “How You See” – e-flux Agenda

I Want to See “How You See” – e-flux Agenda

What is a world, and how do we begin re-worlding it? The inaugural iCUBE Museum takes place at 798CUBE from March 25, 2023 to June 6, 2023, and brings artists, scientists, thinkers, and researchers from all over the world to envision the possibilities of a world to come. With its theme of I Want to See “How You See”, this inaugural edition is directed by Xiewei Song and Hera Lee, and curated by Naiyi Wang.

As the first art project of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) in China, iCUBE Museum is dedicated to changing the way people experience art through revolutionary and innovative technologies that break through the constraints of space and time. The iCUBE Museum collaborates with the world’s leading artists, scientists, thinkers, and researchers, creating new possibilities with cutting edge technologies that translate their creative vision into Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities.

What possibilities emerge when we imagine our world differently? The iCUBE Museum aims to envision a plurality of new worldviews, with continuous “worlding” and “re-worlding” superimposed on the real, connecting fiction and reality. As a series of S.F revealed by Donna Haraway, “the patterning of possible worlds and possible times, material-semiotic worlds, gone, here, and yet to come”. Nine world-renowned artists and scientists are consciously re-worlding the world in ways that inspire our multiple imaginations and explorations of the future. This exhibition opens with the perspectives of artists and scientists who are dreaming of shifts in our reality, and explores how they are engaging with worldbuilding, while reimagining existing worlds and creating new ones.

Their perspectives on “worlding” and “re-worlding” transcend established paradigms, while fleeting information integrates landscape boundaries and “world laws” between the real and the virtual world by utilizing virtual, augmented and mixed realities. In the current “real world” of the virtuality and reality combination, we need to accept a temporary and entangled state. The iCUBE Museum is intended to provide a pathway to explore the “possible” worlds throughout the “multi-dimensional” landscape and present a multi-sensory experience that goes beyond reality and constantly evolves between the virtual and the real, the concrete and the abstract—in this new “everywhen” given to us, you can choose how you perceive the world, and I, want to see “how you see”!

“This exhibition presents a plurality of voices and a multitude of perspectives which are perfect instruments to stimulate our perception. Another world is possible, I Want to See “How You See” tells stories about the world to come, and these new possibilities from the future that help us navigate the now,” states curator Naiyi Wang.

DJ Drama Reveals ‘Gangsta Grillz’ Wishlist Of Artists

DJ Drama‘s list of Gangsta Grillz collaborators is extensive and star-studded, and now he has his eyes set on a few superstars in the making.

After working on Tyler, The Creator’s Grammy-winning Call Me If You Get Lostin 2021, Drama has been on a tangent – putting out Gangsta Grillz tapes with Jeezy, Snoop Dogg, Symba, French Montana, NBA YoungBoy, Jim Jones and more. After releasing his own studio album in March, I’m Really Like That, the Philly native is now eying new talent.

“I’ve had the conversation with Stove God [Cooks],” Drama told XXL about his future collaborators. “I would love to do a project with him. I think a GloRillaGangsta Grillz would be fire. Maybe even like Ice Spice or maybe Lady London. So many dope females out there.”

He continued: “Obviously, a lot of people have always wanted the EST GeeGangsta Grillz. Don’t get me started, so many people. I mean, would love to do a Brent FaiyazGangsta Grillz. It is endless. I think that’s one thing that’s dope and potent about Gangsta Grillz. It’s a platform and cross-generational.”

I’m Really Like That clocks in at 14 songs and is stacked with appearances from Lil Wayne, Tyler, The Creator, Lil Baby, Jeezy, Lil Uzi Vert, Offset, T.I., Rick Ross, Jack Harlow, Gucci Mane, Westside Gunn and the late Nipsey Hussle, among others.

It serves as DJ Drama’s first studio album since 2016’s Quality Street Music 2, which was an equally star-studded affair.

DJ Drama Denies Having Rivalry With DJ Khaled & Funk Flex: ‘There’s Room For Everybody’

During a recent sit-down with The Breakfast Club, Drama said his eagerness to get back into the studio came after working on Call Me If You Get Lost.
